AMD Opteron on Oracle 9i.

Hi,
I would like to know if AMD Opteron platfrom is now supported on Oracle 9i using SUSE or Redhat Linux distribution. If not, do we know when will be it available or any plans for this platform? Any info would much be appreciated.
marlonie

I have installed the 32-bit version of 9i (9.2.0.3) onto the 64-bit AMD64 version of Suse's SLES8 United Linux.
One word - - - FAST!
Each 32-bit oracle process sees a full 4G memory map to itself. With that, I can configure the maximum 2.7G SGA without giving up PGA space and user scalability while using System V shared memory and not the shmfs file system. Naturally, the 64-bit version of 9i would be even better but it is not in production yet.

The OBIEE was installed on 64 bit processor AMD Opteron 8216, but the OBIEE installables were for 32 bit processor.
Is it that OBIEE doesnt work properly with 64 Bit processors or is this any other issue.

  • 10.1.4 Upgrade on an AMD Opteron 64bit metadata repository

    Hi,
I have a Portal MDR on a 64bit AMD Opteron Linux RHEL 4 hardware. I would like to upgrade it to 10.1.4 from 10.1.2.0.2.
The upgrade guide says the upgrade has to be run from the machine where the Portal repository is. But, I cant find a download for this hardware!
Will the 64bit download for itanium work on my hardware?
I have done a remote install of MRCA to load the repository from a 32bit machine
    Kindly help
    Thanks

    Hi,
Just a few remarks about the versions which you are about to install :
<li>Oracle Database (11.2.0.1) => should be at least 11.2.0.2 as 11.2.0.1 is not supported with RCU
<li>Repository Creation Assistant (11.1.1.2.0) => take RCU version for 11.1.1.4 as it will create the 11.1.1.4 version of the repository for you
    <li>Weblogic (10.3.5) => you need 10.3.4 for IDM 11.1.1.4 andd PFRD 11.1.1.4
<li>Identity Management (11.1.1.2.0) => if you are going to install WebLogic 10.3.5, you should install IDM 11.1.1.2 and patch it to 11.1.1.4 !
<li>SSO metadata Repository Creator Assitant (10.1.4.3.1) => this is good, check Note 1069426.1 as it mentions some patches which need to be installed if you use a 11.2 database
<li>Portal, Forms, Reports and Discoverer (11.1.1.2.0) => install patch set 11.1.1.4 on the software home before running the config !
If you follow my recommendations, you will end up with the following software :
<li>IDM 11.1.1.4 with SSO 10.1.4.3 associated with OID
    <li>PFRD 11.1.1.4
You can use a single middleware home for all this software. Make sure to install Weblogic 10.3.4 as 10.3.5 is not supported with FMW 11.1.1.4 products. Also make sure to install the appropriate JDK before installing weblogic.
    Thanks,
    EJ

  • 64 bit vs 32 bit Labview on an AMD Opteron 6380

When running my code on an AMD Opteron 6380 processor, Labview 2014 64bit runs 4 times slower than when running with Labview 2014 32bit.  However the same code running on and INTEL Core i7 ran twice as fast with Labview 64bit vs 32bit.  Does anyone know why?  Note that the code is math intensive running a parallel loop that does not cummunicate with the outside world, i.e. no file access, property nodes, etc.Thank you.

Yes the 6380 FPU is shared between two cores.  I just ran a diagnostic I made up that generates an array of 1 million random numbers, takes the average of those, and then excutes that repeatedly in a parallel loop.  The 6380 showed a 20% to 30% improvement in speed between LV64 & LV32 bit depending on how many cores I told it to use.  So that seems to make more sense.  The other code that I was running that ran 4 times slower has a complicated clusters within a cluster structure including a large look up table array that is being passed around amoung several vi's.  If it is moving that large amount of data around in memory, instead of just the pointer, that might explain it.  But why then would the AMD run slower with 64 bit (by a factor of 4) when compared with the Core i7 which ran twice as fast, which kind of makes sense to me if it is moving that data around with twice the bandwidth?

  • FMS performance on AMD Opteron vs Intel Xeon

    Hi All.
We are facing some perfomance issues in several FMS4 running on AMD Opteron. This servers uses a lot more CPU than the ones that we own that run on a similar Intel Xeon with the same load.
Does FMS run better on Intel Xeon? Is there any studies about it?

I am not processor expert , but what we recommend to our customers is Intel Xeon or faster processor. Most of our testing is done on Intel Xeon. I am not sure whether we have done any comparative study between processors.

All other parts of my computer reaches the system requirements besides the cpu is not an amd phenom ii as recommended. Hi
I have a MSI K8N Diamond PLUS (bios v.1.2), from the website the AMD Opteron 180 2.4 GHz socket 939 is compatible with the board.
No compatibility info about  the cpu AMD Opteron 185 2.6 GHz socket 939. These 2 cpu are very very similar (only different clock).
Do you know if it's really compatible with MSI K8N Diamond PLUS

It will work fine but isn't officially supported. Therefor post screen could show "unknown processor" but that's all.

When I need virtual guest with 3 CPU, can I use only
3 CPU from this list? Isn't in AMD case avalilable any technology
like "INTEL hyperthreading" (from licensing viewpoint)?
    Thank you in advice
    Vladislav Rames

I have 2 HP Blade c7000 enclosures approx half full of HP Blades all AMD (g1s to g7s) as well as many other rack mounted servers. I don't run any hyper-thread cores in my environment.
My understanding is that AMD cores are real cores and need to be licensed as such. If you use HT cores you may have to license them (I don't know). I personally multi-box multiple copies of the same game client on my HP Envy 17 3D which has in i7 with 4 real cores & 4 HT cores & I try to never run my clients on HTs (the MB software allows me to skip the HTs). I definitely see a difference in frame rates and performance if I forget to configure to not use HT cores... If I wouldn't do it to myself I wouldn't do it to my users either... That being said Oracle may count HT cores as real cores for licensing so I wouldn't pin them for that reason alone if they do.

  • Issues with AMD Opteron @1MB L2 cache for CS4

On starting at a non-creative organisation 18 months ago I inherited a 2.5GB, 2.2GHz Dual-Core AMD 1214 Opteron (which I believe has 1MB L2 cache) and an ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT card
In the past I have used dual-core 2.8GHz Xeons with NVidea cards which have been lightning fast compared to this machine.
My main use is for CS4, and the current system is really slowing me down. After a little research, I understand the Opteron to have a server architecture rather than a Workstation architecture and only 1MB of L2 cache. I appreciate there are many factors to consider, but are these two elements really slowing me down?!?
    Thanks in advance

There're not speeding you up, that's for sure.

  • To determine the processor type (like Xeon, AMD opteron etc).

    Hi,
I have remote root access to the solaris x86 (Intel & AMD) server's in our lab.

    Thanks & Regards,
    -GnanaShekar-

I've inferred from the original poster's comments that they hope to have a single,
monolithic command (with a few command switches, here and there),
that will be able to immediately report ...
    SPARC or SPARCv9 or SPARCv10
    or ...
Intel, Xeon or not Xeon, or
    AMD 64bit versus "64bit-capable in 32bit mode" versus 32bit-only.
and so on and so on ...
    It's not going to happen.
    As Martin knows very well
(as I've seen from reading his great contributions to all these various forums),
uname can tell you x86 versus SPARC and not much more than that.
For most of us, that is all we might care about. That answer is good enough.
    GnanaShekar:
You may need to get familiar with all the various outputs from many commands,
then use some of them as favorite commands and others as less-favored.
    ... go ahead and run
    # uname -a
    then
    # isainfo -vk
    then
    # prtconf -v | more
and examine it very slowly line by line.
    then run
    # prtconf -v | grep Intel
    then run
    # prtconf -v | grep AMD
