Amd vs. nvidia: what propietary driver gives the best Arch experience?

I'm looking into buying a gddr5, < 100€ dedicated video card. I'd like to know, on the pure driver and updates side, which between nvidia and amd gives a smoother experience? I am on x86_64 and have an intel i5 2500k cpu, and probably the choice ATM boils down to sapphire 6670 vs. palit gt 630 (in their gddr5 version).
I'll use the card to play some 3D games (so we're speaking propietary drivers) but I'd like to understand how much time I have to plan on tracking down bugs, downgrading packages and so on... on archlinux specifically.
what are your experiences?

How does the nvidia driver suck? In terms of quality it is on par with the windows version. Driver updates are frequent and feature loaded. Just yesterday they released a new driver with great improvements. Never had any glitches or crashes even with their beta drivers. Video hardware acceleration through VDPAU works like a charm.

Every OpenGL game is just as fast on Linux as on Windows on my machine. What makes them better than AMD is also that they support cards for a very long time. Up untill 304.64 which is just 1-2 months old they supported really really old cards with their driver branch. With >310 everything newer than the 8000 series is supported. On windows I couldn't get any newer driver than what my laptop vendor offered on their website in the "download" section which was some crappy old driver from 2007. Even on the nvidia website I simply couldn't get a driver for my GeForce 6150 Go. No matter if I searched for Product = GeForce or N-Force which is the mainboard that is used in my laptop. Their little java applet couldn't figure out my needed driver either. On linux I only had to "pacman -S nvidia". Done. Works. So their linux driver support is sometimes even better than on windows.
If that is a driver that "sucks". What is a good driver in your opinion?
If you want to find out what really sucks go into the AMD section of the "Steam for Linux" Beta Forum and check out all the glitches and choppy performance these guys have to deal with.

    I do a fair amount of audio, video editing and photoshop, but I have a limited budget.  What's going to give the best bang-for-buck for the next 3-5 yrs?  My current machine is a 13" Macbook unibody 2.4 Core 2 Duo w/ 4Gb Ram so it's time to move forward with more power and screen real estate!

    Hello, Jeff
    I could never edit on a 13" screen. I'm currently using a 17" MBP i7 Early 2011 as a fast replacement to my aged 20" Intel iMac.
    Both systems are not that far apart on stats and you will find that processing HD video will rely highly on the read/write to your storage. Myself, I'd be eye balling the 2011 for the Thunderbolt port so HD Video export/compression doesn't take forever! Currently processing a finished HD project for DVD uses at most 20% of my total CPU capacity. The FW800 drive is the big bottleneck! (I know I need at least a RAID to see a real speed boost).
    How good your eyes are and your usage style would dictate if the difference in screen size make a difference to you.

  • Hooking up a monitor  to m macbook pro ?what would give the best picture ??

    i just picked up a monitor to hook up to my macbook pro the moniter is 1080 p what would give the best picture vga or dvi ??? for full 1080 p
    Message was edited by: go lakers

    You want to go directly from the video out of your MacBookPro to DVI. Don't involve VGA if at all possible.
    Depending on the exact model MacBookPro you have, it has either a miniDVI out or a miniDisplayPort out.
    • For miniDVI out, all you need is a miniDVI-to-DVI cable or a miniDVI-to-HDMI cable.
    • For miniDisplayPort out, you will need the Apple miniDisplayPort-to-DVI adapter plus either a DVI-to-DVI cable or a DVI-to-HDMI cable to connect to your monitor.
    Again, what make/model monitor do you have?

    The best case, is the one you like the best.  Seriously, how can we answer that?  Everyone has their OWN favorite case.  You need to find yours.  Not to mention we have no idea what phone you have???

    First step before doing anything with OD is to make certain that local DNS services are correct.  To verify that, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities on the test server, and issue the following harmless, diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
    You'll need to enter your administrative password for the sudo to be accepted.
    If the output from that command reports no changes are required, then an export from the original OD and an import into the test system would be typical for testing, if you trust what's in the original OD.

    I was wondering the same thing?  I have a hard time with buying a case, because I bought the phone because of the color it already is!  lol
    I was thinking about going with something like the Spigen Case Bumper.  Still allows you to see the color of the phone and still have protection.

    Most any All In One printer/fax/copy will work with a Mac running OS X.
    The best thing you can do is pick one out based on cost and features then check whether there are drivers for it or if it is AirPrint compatible.

  • What WPF method gives the same KeyChar like in C#?

    in C#  there's a method KeyChar. when inserting a key in to a textBox it gives the value that was insert. for ex. when clicking on:5 the method gives: 5.
    but Wpf doesn't have the KeyChar method.
    i tried to use Key but then it gives me for ex. when i click: 5, i get: 5D5.
    what method can i use to get the KeyChar like in C#?
    or, maybe there's no such method and then i'll have to build one as an extension?

    >>what method can i use to get the KeyChar like in C#?
    There is no KeyChar property in WPF. WPF is not Windows Forms. If you handle a keydown event there is only the Key property and this returns for example Key.D1 when you press a digit.
    You could easily remove the "D" or the "NumPad" part using the string.SubString method though:
    private void TextBox_PreviewKeyDown(object sender, KeyEventArgs e)
    string number;
    if ((e.Key >= Key.D0 && e.Key <= Key.D9))
    //digit pressed!
    number = e.Key.ToString().Substring(1); // = "1" when D1 is pressed
    else if (e.Key >= Key.NumPad0 && e.Key <= Key.NumPad9)
    number = e.Key.ToString().Substring(6); // = "1" when NumPad1 is pressed
    else
    //no digit...
    Hope that helps.

  • What hard drive does the iMac use ?

    I have a 17 inch iMac with intel Core Duo with 80GB hard drive. The screen is damaged because of vertical lines and i am replacing it myself and i thought it would be a good idea to upgrade the hard drive while i am at it.
    Am i correct in assuming that the hard drive is a SATA 2.5" laptop drive ?
    I found a cheap Hitachi 200GB 2.5 inch 3 gb/sec 5400 RPM, 8MB Cache, 12MS SATA II drive. Is this suitable ?
    Will any 2.5 inch SATA drive, be it SATA, SATA II, SATA III etc. work fine ?

    Are you sure, the 17" Early Core Duo iMac's came with a 160GB Hard Drive.
    see > iMac (Early 2006) - Technical Specifications
    No, the 17" Early Core Duo iMac uses a 3.5 SATA Drive.
    Personally I have upgraded the Hard Drive in several Early Core Duo's using both 320GB and 500GB WD Cavair Blue's.

  • Am I using my drives in the best way in terms of performance?

    I want to make sure I'm using my iMac and drives in the way that will give me the best FCPX performance.
    I have a mid-2010 iMac 2.93 GHz i7 core with 32 GB of RAM running OS 10.7.5.  It has an ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB graphics card.  My iMac has two internal drives:  a 256 GB flash drive (my "Macintosh HD"), and a 2 TB standard drive (my "Macintosh HD2").  I also have an external 2 TB drive from OWC/Macsales connected with Firewire 800.  I can't find the specifics on this OWC external drive, but I know I bought it as a video editing drive (it is not just for backing-up).  Though they introduced soon after my iMac, mine does not have a Thunderbolt port.
    As things stand now, my OS and FCPX are on the main internal hard drive (it's my understanding that that is where they are automatically), which is the 256 GB flash drive labeled "Macintosh HD."  And I have my FCP event libraries and my projects on the second internal drive, which is the 2 TB internal drive labeled "Macintosh HD2."  Right now I'm only using the OWC 2 TB external firewire 800 drive for storing the video I upload from my cameras.
    Does this sound like the best way to go in terms of performance?  I mean, is it better to use the internal 2TB drive for my events and projects?  Or would they be better on the OWC 2 TB external firewire 800 drive?  Or should the projects be on one and the events on the other?

    T'bolt SSD or T'bolt RAID will be faster than your internal spinning disk drive.  For sure.
    Larger drives are faster than smaller drives, mechanically.  But the data throughput is the same.  The differences are so small no one can notice in real world work.  But you get so many advantages with larger drives.
    See, a hard drive encoluser has more than one platter in it.  A single 4 TB drive can have 4 platters in it.  so it access data, "mechanicaly" faster than a smaller drive with only 1 or 2 platters.  BUT when that data hits the controller card, the interface protocol (FW, USB, SATA, etc), it all shuts down to the same speed.  The platters and read/write heads are physicall MUCH faster than what the interface and controller card can handle.  So all that matters is how it gets connected.  USB 2 suck, FW is minimal for video, eSATA and SATA are pretty darned good, 6GB SSD is awesome, as is T'bolt.
    Let me put it this way.  spinning disks are slower than SSDs in terms of internal "data access" (read/write) speed.  Both have to deal with the same "bandwidth" issues when they hit an interface such as USB or FW or T'bolt.  Two mechanically different things, but the work together to give you the total sum of a drives ultimate real world performance.
    Now, a single SATA drive internally will be very slightly slower than a SATA drive in a T'bolt encoluser.  Because T'bolt has greater bandwidth than SATA.  But, the differences are so small, in daily real world operations no one would notice, and the price of the T'bot SATA enclosure would just be expensive.
    That is why you see T'bolt enclosures with SATA drives always as RAIDs, 2 or more drives.  That's were SATA drives and T'bolt really shine.   T'bot really shines with SSD RAIDs, but their super expensive and super limited capacity.
    But directly to your question, hard drives are the opposite of automobiles; bigger is always faster.

  • What naming scheme is the best?

    I've imported photos from a hard drive into Aperture. The folders were listed as years. Then with folders of events within each.
    On import to Aperture I have ie: 1999 as project. Within this I have many folders such as Fishing, XX birthday, XX birthday, Fun Park, Christmas, etc...
    Then another Project 2000 and same as above.
    Is there a better naming scheme I should use? In each year Project folder I have Christmas photos. Paintball tournaments. Family get togethers etc..
    Some events the same just different years.
    Is there a more efficient use of Apeture? Such as making a Christmas Project and then putting all Christmas photos in here? Should I then make year folders of the tournaments or for Christmas?
    Not sure of the best use of Aperture to control photos?

    For me the best thing is a unique name for every image. I had considered a date naming convention and did not go forward for a few reasons, first off the name was getting too long and I could always look for the date by metadata, so no need.
    I figured naming by content presented problems such as what content if an image of a dog also has a cat in it? Skiing in Alta? Skiing or Alta.... Then there is the problem of remembering or finding the last numbered image in the group.
    So I ended up with a simple sequence number. I was originally going to go with using letters for the beginning to coincide with a year. A=2001, B=2002 etc. I again threw this out as being redundant because of Metadata. I ended up just going with a letter first with 5 digits following. I edit down to keepers and then simply go back and see the last number I used and then use the following number.
    In Aperture I place the images in projects of the shoot in folders of the client then in projects within those folders. I then put alias's in a sequentially numbered folder in groups of 1000.
