AME CC MPEG-2 DVD Encode Problems

Having an issue with MPEG-2 DVD exports using CBR instead of VBR. I've always used CBR before with no problems at all. Now, when I export with CBR (actual bitrate doesn't matter), I get this weird pulsing artifacting in the video. It doesn't do it in VBR, but I'm not altogether happy with how crossfades turn out with VBR (lots of blocking).
I'm using the latest versions of Premiere CC and AME CC. The source video files I'm converting are Quicktime ProRes 422LT files at 1920x1080 23.97. I'm on an iMac running Mavericks - 3.5ghz i7 32gb RAM with NVIDIA GTS 780M with 4gb video RAM.
Any ideas or help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

I'm getting something similar with HD MPEG-2 encodes in PPCC and AMECC. I've got a couple of broadcast outlets that specify 29.97fps 20mbps CBR MPEG-2, one in 1080p and one in 1080i. Any time I encode in CBR, I get that weird kind of pulsing. I've tried it with automatic GOP placement on and off, doesn't seem to make a difference. The only way I've found to fix it is to (with the stations' blessing) encode as VBR MPEG-2.

CS4: DVD encoding problem(s) Mpeg2 and avi

Hi,
I have been trying to burn my video files to DVD. After a month of failures and 50+ wasted DVDs thrown in the garbage -- plus countless hours trying to learn the basics, reading the FAQs, trouble-shooting, and losing my patience awaiting technical replies from Adobe (which I now suspect will go unanswered) -- I am out of solutions and waving a white flag.
Problem:
I have two video files. Both were created in Premiere Pro CS4 and exported via the Adobe Media Encoder as MPEG2-DVD high quality files (for NTSC) .
The first Mpeg2 file is 800 MB (41 mins); the other is 988 MB (50 mins).
I have placed the two files into a single timeline, with 21 chapter stops.
The only other file in the entire project is a PSD file for the Menu. It has two buttons, which link respectively to chapter stops 1 and 10.
My results are failure-upon-failure...
Primary question:
When I go to "Build" the DVD, it says the Encoded Size is 4.7 GB ~ same size as the DVD. This displays in the "Disc Info".
Similarly, when I open my "Timeline" properties for that single timeline, it says the duration is 1 hour 31 minutes - 4.7 GB.
Why is the disc a full 4.7 GB when the two video files (combined) are under 2 GB?
Supplementary questions:
My "Flowchart" and "Property" links display the Menu, with the two button links in my Menu PSD connecting to the respective chapter stops.
There are no problems when I click "Check Project," and the project works perfectly in "Preview" mode.
But, when I attempt to test the burned DVD into different DVD players, the Menu doesn't appear and the play defaults to random chapters, then freezes. I can access the menu, but only after the play has started and/or frozen, and I have to do that by clicking the "Menu" button on my DVD remotes. And again, when I hit play on either of the buttons on the main menu, the video files will freeze, which means burning & testing each disc sometimes takes an hour per.
Does anybody have a solution?
I have read and watched several tutorials, to no avail. I have tried burning the Project using large Mpeg files as well as medium Mpeg files, both encoded with 1-Pass VBR, 2-pass VBR, CBR. I have tried widescreen and normal.
I have also tried using AVI files. The two AVI files are respectively 41 mins @ 1536 kbps 720x480 8.68GB; and 50 mins @ 1536 kbps 720x480 10.6GB.
Together, those two AVI files are 19+ GB, which would require 5 DVDs.
What am I doing wrong? What should I be using to burn DVDs - Mpeg-2 or Avis?
When I export from Premiere Pro/Adobe Media Encoder, whould I be exporting as Mpeg2 files or Mpeg2-DVD?
Is it possible that Encore automatically expand and/or compress files, so that the 19GB avi is compressed to 4.7 GB DVD; and the 1.8 GB Mpeg2 "expands" to 4.7 GB?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this project has caused me numerous delays and ruined deadlines and soured me even more on Adobe's video editing product and their truly-awful customer support.

As far as the use of premiere pro CS4 with Encore Cs4, do not bother to pre transcode your material. Let Encore do this for you. Leave your files in the original format which I assume was AVI. Instead import your Premiere Pro sequence directly from the project (or export it from Premiere Pro it to encore). As you quessed Encore will try and expand/compress your files for the DVD you are making.
Encore by default trys to transcode for the best quality that will fit onto the media you specify which is why it is setting the output to 4.7 rather than the file size of the video.
You were not specific enough about the nature of the failed copies. One thing to do is to always try testing your project from your first menu to see that it behaves correctly. If you don't want your DVD to start playing automatically make sure you set it to open the Top Menu. Then try a test either to your hard drive (if you can), or to a RW DVD.

Terrible Quality issue with MPEG 2 (DVD- encode plz HELP!!!

I edited something short in FCP 5 and wanted to make a DVD but the resulted mpeg-2 file has grabage all over. Not just square artefacts but a lot of problems like an old VHS maybe (but it isn't video noise either). It's more like a DV tape that would be ******.
I tried to recompress in DV and the resulting quicktime .mov file is fine. But every time I encode it in any of the DVD presets it is terrible. Also tried MPEG-1. Same.
As for the 2 pass encodes they crash my computer...
Please help Obi-Wan Compressor you are my only hope.

If you're running some flavor of Compressor 2, then try using the One Pass setting (but not the One-Pass VBR setting) at 6.5 Mbps. If you're still having issues, other things to try:
up the One Pass bit rate to 7.5 Mbps
Alter GOP to Open (from the default Closed)
Alter GOP structure to IP (from the default IBBP)
If I'm having issues with Compressor 2's Two Pass encodes, I can usually save my hide with a One Pass 7.5 Mbps Open IBBP GOP encode. If that doesn't work, Plan B is to do a One Pass 6.5 Mbps Closed IP GOP encode.
Or are you using Compressor 1?

MPEG-2 Encoding Problem

Hello. I apologize in advance if this topic has been discussed elsewhere or previously...I searched quite a bit without finding an answer.
I create videos that need to fill a screen that is 6x8 feet. I use FCE NTSC/DV 4:3 project and export settings and most of my videos contain imported images and After Effects movies. I export sequences to QuickTime movie via EXPORT/Export Using QT Conversion.
The presentation software I use to display my movies doesn't support .MOV files, so I use Adobe Media Encoder (CS4) to encode to MPEG-2.
**The problem is that the MPEG movies always encode to 640x480 and doesn't fill my 6x8foot screen. I know this has something to do with square/non-square pixels but I just can't find a clear answer anywhere.
My goal is to have my videos fill the screen fully. Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry about that, it is an 8'x6' screen. The video image is wide enough to fill the screen, but not high enough, i.e. there is a small amount of horizontal black on top and bottom of the projected video.
We use a ceiling mounted SD projector, and the throw distance is correct (the other images and videos we use fill the screen normally). The projector is set to 4:3 and it's native resolution is 1024x768. We use presentation software which is run from a Windows desktop via VGA.

Problem exporting to mpeg-2 DVD format from Premiere Pro CSF

I just purchased Premiere Pro CS5 and have been going through the video tutorials on Lynda.com. I have created a short video sequence and am trying to export it to mpeg-2 DVD format using the default "MainConcept MPEG Video" codec. After the video is exported to my hard drive and imported into Encore, I see all of these green lines and green shading in the video I just created in Premiere that wasn't there when I rendered my sequence in Premiere prior to export. Does anyone know why these green lines and shading are added to the video? I figure I must be using the wrong export settings in Premiere Pro.
I've also tried to export this video segment to Quicktime .mov format using the default DV25 NTSC codec, but when I do this the final exported video has audio only and the video is black (I made sure there was a check in the Export Video check box).
I have a Macbook with 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and Max OS X version 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard) with all appropriate updates. Does anyone have any ideas on how to address this issue or where I can read up on appropriate combinations of video formats and codecs?

Hi, thanks for the answer. Yes, I just tried importing the Premiere project directly into Encore using the dynamic link function and it worked just fine. Once I made some changes to the to the Premiere project; however, the green lines appeared when i would preview the project in Encore. Based on your feedback, I won't worry about the extra green lines though and will attempt to build another DVD. Like you said, I think the key is to import the Premiere project into Encore using the dynamic linking.

Exporting Matrox HD Project To MPEG-2 DVD Taking Very Long

Project: Matrox HD 1920 x 1080i. 2 hours on timeline. The files are original files taken from AG-HMC150 AVCHD camcorder in .MTS file format.
If I export the timeline to MPEG-2 DVD format with CBR, render with maximum quality option enabled, and render with maximum depth enabled, this process takes 8 hours.
If I export the timeline to MPEG-2 DVD format with VBR 2 passes, render with maximum quality option enabled, and render with maximum depth enabled, this process takes 16 hours.
I wanted to ask is this normal for exporting to take this long on my computer with Matrox MXO2 Mini w/ MAX? Is there a problem with my computer, settings, or something else? What can I do to improve export speed of MPEG-2 DVD files?
Below are the specs of my computer. Windows 7, Adobe CS5, and Matrox are updated to latest versions. MPE GPU Acceleration is hardware enabled.

Jim-You can speed things up (and keep that quality) by ensuring you have Hardware Acceleration turned on and doing a Direct Export, instead of Queuing it up through AME
According to Adobe that is incorrect Jim. Here's a quote...
Adobe Media Encoder
Premiere Pro and other applications employ Adobe Media Encoder, a standalone encoding application. When you specify export settings in the Export Settings dialog box and click Export, Premiere Pro sends the export request to the Adobe Media Encoder.
From the Export Settings dialog box, click Queue to send Premiere Pro sequences into the standalone Adobe Media Encoder queue. From the queue, you can encode sequences into one or more formats, or take advantage of other features.
When the standalone Adobe Media Encoder is rendering and exporting in the background, you can continue to work in Premiere Pro. Adobe Media Encoder encodes the most recently saved version of each sequence in the queue.

Disc encoding problems?

Two separate problems:
1/ I downscaled a short PAL 50i widescreen HDV video from CS4 to MPEG-2 DVD using "Use Maximum Render Quality" in Export Settings. The audio was PCM. I used VBR 2 Pass, Min bitrate 2.8, Max bitrate 8, Target bitrate 7, M frames 3, N frames 12, as in Jeff Bellunes tutorial. I burned it with ImgBurn. The disc plays perfectly in my DVD player, but won't play at all in two of my friends players, and plays without audio in a third player. Why is my DVD not compatible with all players?
2/ I transcoded a PAL 50i HDV project to MPEG-2 Blu-Ray image, then burned it to Blu-Ray disc using ImgBurn. The disc plays OK for a few minutes, then suddenly at a transition point, the sound goes completely out of sync with the picture, and remains so. The project plays perfectly in Pro with no loss of sync.
If anyone has any ideas for these 2 problems I would be grateful to hear them. Thanks

may also explain another long-term problem I've had: my film which contains a lot of slow pan shots across trees with leaves waving in the wind gave me a lot of problems with overloading the codec causing flickery movement and, when played on BR player, brightness flickering in the detailed areas of the picture. I assumed this brightness flickering was an inevitable part of the Blu-Ray encoding process, but when I copied the film back from the BR disc into the computer it plays perfectly with no brightness flickering

This is difficult footage, at best. Two things can contribute to getting the best Transcode with difficult footage: the CODEC used, and the bit-rate of that footage.
Some people report that the H.264 CODEC does a better job for their footage, while others tout the HD MPEG-2 CODEC. I'd pick up a few BD RE discs, and test some of the worst of this footage, that which looks worst on BD, using both CODEC's and also adjusting the bit-rate up. When the bit-rate goes up, the Duration of the movie on BD will go down, so there is a trade-off - quality vs Duration.
I'd be very interested in hearing what works best for you.
For this issue, I do not think that a firmware update is likely to help, but I could well be wrong there too.

P.Pro 1.5 - Losing quality in AVI/MPEG to DVD conversion

Hi, everyone.
Is my first time in Adobe forums and my english isn't certainly the best, so excuse me for something I'll possibly make wrong :-)
This is my problem:
I edit a lot of videos (holidays, weddings, karting, ...) from Mini-DV tapes. No problem on edit work, neither on export to AVI or MPEG. And at this point (after export) I don't think I had lost some video quality or if had that would be slight. But when I finished the next step (convert the resulting file to DVD format) I realize that video suffers from a substantial quality lost, mainly a distortion on whites (they get much brighter and, of course, lose some of its texture). Also, not always, is noticeable a kind of yellow and red thin lines along the "objects" shape (mainly on human faces).
At first I thought that was noting about Premiere and all about the conversion from AVI/MPEG to DVD because it's when the problem occurs, but after I had experimented all kind of converting software and the problem happens all times (sometimes more, sometimes less), I become to think the problem may be in Premiere exporting settings.
So, these are my Premiere exporting settings:
Export to AVI: File -> Export -> Movie
Some important settings:
                       General: File Type: MS DV AVI
                       Video: Compressor: DV (PAL) - I'm in Portugal (Europe)

I also thought the problem could be on the hardware but a few months ago I made an upgrade on my computer and changed CPU, Motherboard, RAM and Graphics card (had an AMD Sempron 2800+, 2 GB DDR and an ATI 9600 Pro 128MB) and the problem still remains...
Actually I think it match all the needs:

I don't care about time CPU will spend to do the task - before the upgrade it tooks aprox. 5 hours to convert a video and now it tooks only 1h30m :-). What is really important is obtaining the most quality DVD video can be possible. Can you help me?

Second, I'm very sorry to make a reply almost a month after your answer. The reason is that I went on holidays without an opportunity to test your tip.
I used Harm's link and than reached to a Bitrate of 8.0000 for all three fields (Min., Target and Max.) and that makes all the difference. Now I have a video with very good quality.
But I haven't tested your tip yet to see if that improves the video final quality.
I want to work always with the maximum quality, no matter what time is needed to convert the video and no matter the length (GB) it costs.
Do you think I can export to an uncompressed file (avi for windows and compressor set to none) and than make the Menus with Encore? It wouldn't be better work on Encore with an MPEG2 file? The DV compressor is MPEG2, isn´t it?
And why you suggested to not have the "Optimize stills" checked? This is to optimize the frames without movement, isn´t it? Many times I use photos inserted in the movie. This option isn't good for that?
Your last suggestion, to go directly from timeline to the end target (MPEG2) is much different than that I use (DV compressor)?
If you could answer my questions I would appreciate.

Sorry, I'd made a mistake. When I answer to you I didn't realise that your sugestions was to AVI exportation and not to MPEG2.
Of course you are absolutely right: for an intermediate file, no compression is always better than some compression :-)
But my question about not have the "Optimize stills" checked remains. What does it makes, really?

DVD Encode Won't Enter Media Encoder

Whenever I export my 1080p video to MPEG 2 DVD preset for HD widescreen progressive, Adobe Encoder opens, but it never shows a file and never renders anything. I can export directly out of Premiere, however? What's happening?

You either export to dvd which is 720x576/480.
or BluRay disk 1920x1080 interlaced.
There is a way to get HD on a dvd disk but that is about 20 minutes.
Make a BD iso in Encore and burn that iso with e.g. Nero as an image to dvd.
You do need a BD player to play this dvd disk and it does not play on all BD-players.

Getting Around MPEG Streamclip "No Audio" Problem

(Long post; apologies in advance.)
I needed to get around the MPEG Streamclip "no audio" problem that other people here have had. I just found a workaround that more-or-less works for my specific situation ... and it's free to boot.
Since other people are having this problem, I thought I'd let you know what happened to me, so you can decide if this is something you want to try. If you do, I suggest posting replies here so we all can learn (if that's okay with the board moderators here).
QTAmateur for MacOS X is available at http://www.mikeash.com/software/qtamateur/ . The developer has a somewhat full explanation of what it does at the site, so I won't repeat it here (and I don't get anything for talking about it here; I just want to share the good news).
Right now I'm field recording with a Flip Mino camera (non-HD), which saves video/audio to an AVI file (3ivx MPEG-4, 640x480) at 30 fps, with 44.1 kHz audio (Microsoft ADPCM). Funny thing is the files from my Flip actually imported into FCE without any conversion, but I had to render everything. And the video looked like crap. Hated the rendering and the look, so I searched for other solutions.
After paying for a couple of things that didn't work (lessons learned there), I finally found MPEG Streamclip. Since I'm using Snow Leopard, I sunk the additional $20 into the dang MPEG-2 playback component after my initial export try didn't produce any audio. After the component install, I still didn't have audio. Grrrrr.
So I Googled a bunch of keywords, and I somehow stumbled across this QTA package. Snow Leopard users should note a minor drawback here: QTA needs QuickTime 7, which gets blown away in a Snow Leopard upgrade and is not included in new Macs with Snow Leopard. Users can get off of their Install DVD, though, so it's not a huge deal.
When exporting from QTA, I matched its settings (audio and video) with the ones I found in this document: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12274888&#12274888 . QTA's export interface is actually QT7s, so at least that's familiar.
The only problem I'm having is that even though I set QTA to export at 29.97 fps, the exported files are still at 30 fps. A quick change in FCE upon import is the only thing I needed to use the file without rendering. I also had to change the fps setting on my LiveType files.
The only thing I need to figure out is to how to match up some studio-recorded audio with all of the above, so I don't have to render the studio audio and so it comes out at the equivalent of 30 fps. I think all I need to do is record at 44.1 KHz and I'm okay.
Of course, this is all my experience, and I realize others may not be able to work with this kind of setup. But I think this is an interesting workaround .. I wouldn't really call it a full solution, though, mainly because of the 29.97 fps versus 30 fps aspect.
One other quick thing: I'm not sure if this works without that $20 MPEG-2 playback component from Apple (thanks for that charge, Apple!), since I already had the component installed when I discovered QTA. Someone without the component, though, can download this and see if it works. If it does, then we all know that we don't need to spend the extra $20 for it to work.

Thanks so much for your replies (speedy, too!). I especially want to thank Meg, who took the time to replicate the problem (which confirms to myself that I'm not nuts ). At least I know I have an ultimate "savior" in QT7 Pro.
Before I spend that final $30, though, I want to see if Tom can help, based on what the QT Inspector says about my .avi files from the Flip. Here's what it says:

When exporting, though, I've always used DV/DVCPRO w/audio @ uncompressed 48k, and frame size @ 720x480 @ 29.97fps settings (saw those in another post here at the forum). I'm thinking those aren't contributing to my situation.

BTW, the biggest reason why I want to have the audio is to easily sync the audio off the digital recorder (I hook myself up with a lav mic) to the audio coming off of the Flip. I do the ol' "triple clap" trick to sync audio, so that helps -- thank goodness for audio waveforms in FCE.
Once synced, I then delete the Flip audio and move the digital recorder audio up to A1/A2 (although I delete the A2 audio channel). Sounds 1000% better than the Flip audio, as I record outside and the Flip mic picks up wind big-time.
BTW, Tom: I bought your book earlier this week. It's really, really good. You could teach an entire college semester class off of this book, and do it well. I'm getting to more of the lessons this week.

How can I use the MPEG-2 DVD format for video rendering?

I have been trying to make a DVD out of my brother's wedding footage, but I've run into a wall. I would like to render out my footage in the .M2V format (MPEG-2 DVD), but I'm not given the option to use it. The only MPEG format I'm given is the .H264, and that doesn't work as well. How can I install the .M2V codec?

You should either:
Render to a suitable production codec and then compress for DVD in your authoring application.Use the Render Cue to render a PhotoJpg at NTSC or PAL file using default frame sizes for your AE rendering composition, then drop in Encore for authoring.
Open your AE project in Adobe Media Encoder, pick the composition you want to render from the list and pick the MPEG 2 for DVD preset.
Open Adobe Encore, select File>Dynamic Link>Import After Effects Composition and then set up your timelines and menu's as you like and select Build DVD.
All DVD authoring programs will compress standard def video in just about any format for DVD. After Effects, however, will not do multi-pass rendering which is required for high quality MPEG compression.

MPEG-2 DVD or Quicktime Movie File ?? HELP!

I am finished with a ten minute video that needs to be burned to DVD with the upmost quality.
I captured and edited the project in 1080i HD.
Should I export as MPEG-2 DVD and then to Encore?
Or should I export as a Quicktime Movie File at maximum depth?
Which one will look best on a DVD??
Are these my two best choices, or is there another way to do it to make the quality even better??
I need this done by tonight, so if anyone can lend there expertise, i would be so appreciative.

As far as I know, the DVD specification calls for MPEG, not Quicktime... so Encore will just have to re-encode a QT file (if it will even accept that format as input)
You may, of course, export as DV AVI type 2 with 48khz sound and let Encore do the actual encoding to DVD format

Encoding problems in email while on Windows Mail app

Hello.
I have a question concerning email and encoding problems in the Windows Mail App in Windows 8.1. I have encountered a problem with an email I received, while reading, I see strange ASCII characters in one email. I have never encountered it in
my web browsers nor Gmail, just the Mail App.

Encoding problem while reading binary data from MQ-series

Dear all,
we are running on 7.0 and we have an encoding problem while reading binary data from MQ-series. Because we are getting flat strings from queue we use module "Plain2ML" (MessageTransformBean) for wrapping xml-elements around the incoming data.
The MQ-Series-Server is using CCSID 850, which we configured in connection parameters in communication channel (both parameters for Queuemanager CCSID and also CCSID of target).If there are special characters in the message (which HEX-values differ from codepage to codepage) we get errors in our adapter while executing, please see stack-trace for further analysis below.
It seems to us that
1. method ByteToCharUTF8.convert() expects UTF-8 in binary data
2. Both CCSID parameters are not used anyway in JMS-adapter
How can we solve this problem without changing anything on MQ-site?

for the first MTB now we are using only one parameter: Transform.ContentType = text/plain;charset="ISO-8859-1"
The second MTB, which does the XML-Wrapping, is configured like this:

Both CCSID configuration parameters from the "Source"-Tab we've set to 850.
Now, we don't get an error anymore - sun.io.malformedInputException - , but, unfortunately, now special character conversion succeeded (we need an "ß" and we get an ISO-HEX-E1 -> á). E1 is (different from ISO) an "ß" in 850.
Any ideas?

Encoding problem in call-back to hook URL (post parameters)

Hello all,
I'm encountering a character encoding problem while retrieving the content of the shopping basket from one of our provider.
After the POST request is made by the provider to our system using the hook url, when debbuging I can see that some special characters are represented with the sign '#' (after the call the ITS_IMPORT_CONTEXT).
In our case using the parameter http_content_charset with various values, including UTF-8, did not change the result.
Inspecting the HTTP traffic has highlighted the following: the encoding received from the provider is related to UTF-8, but while we are expecting the hexadecimal values, we are receiving the "Unicode code points", which are not recognized by our SAP system. For more details look at the UTF-8 encoding table found here and compare the values under column "Unicode code point" with the one under column "UTF-8 (hex.)".
As an example, for the character 'é', we are receiving the value "%E9" (the code point) instead of receiving the the hexa value : "%C3%A9".
Do you have any idee if this can be corrected on our side or if the provider must addapt the way it's sending the POST parameters?

Indeed I had contacted the provider and informed them about the encoding problem and the fact that passing the parameter http_content_charset had no effect on the sent back encoding.
They have taken into account my request and have changed the encoding used during the request to the HOOK_URL.
