AME CS5.5 hangs on "Reading XMP"
Been having this issue ever since I upgraded to 5.5...
Finish a video in Premiere, export to AME, click the play/start encode. In the encode status, it gets to "Processing: Reading XMP" and simply hangs there indefinitely (hours). Clicking to stop/pause the encode doesn't actually stop it, only way to do anything is to force-quit AME. Then it won't re-open until a restart. Only way I can export my final video from Premiere is the direct export, which works well enough when it's a single video basis, but when I want to do a batch of exports, or continue editing something else while exporting, this completely puts me at a stand-still.
Any idea what's with AME just stalling out on me here?
I would be happy to share them with you. However, I ran into some problems. The files we're on an external drive and I had shut down and disconnected the drive. Even though the computer was OFF when I disconnected, when I reconnected it Windows wanted to scan the drive and like an idiot I said OK. The project file, and other supporting files are all reporting zero (0) bytes. The only thing still there is the MXF video files. Even the exported files I had made one by one are at zero bytes.
So I'm in the process of re-creating the project. I'm starting over from scratch with a different drive for the raw video files. I'll re-create the sequence, make my edits and I'm going to try to export with AME again.
So what would you like? The original MXF files? Or would you like me to finish re-creating the project and see if I run into the same issues?
One thing I'm trying different this time is I went into the Media Preferences and I unchecked the two boxes relating to XMP data. I'm seeing if that will make a difference.

AME CS5.5 Hanging at 75% & Drive Update for NVIDIA GeForce GTX-470
Hello,
I am having problems with AME CS5.5 hanging as well. I was wondering if somone from Adobe can tell me if the latest Driver upgrade for my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 card of 285.62 is safe/recomended for Adobe CS5.5 Premiere/AME/Encore/After Effects programs. I do not want to cause any additional issues with my Adobe related issues. My present driver is 280.26...Thanks, SteveI installed the update after creating a restore point.
I guess it's safe, but the behavior is the same. I still have the hanging issue.
I hope that this bug gets fixed soon., -
AME hangs at "Reading XMP Data" and won't start encoding
System:
Mac OSX 10.8.5
2 x 3.06 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
64 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
Premiere 7.2.1 (4)
AME 7.2.0.43
I've created short videos, usually 4 to 12 minutes in length. Edited from Sony XDCAM EX video at 720p60.
I export 5 of these videos to AME using the h.264 codec to try to create mp4 files and cueue them in AME.
Once they are in the Queue of AME, I hit start. AME shows the progress at the bottom and says it is Reading XMP data, but it
then never progresses to the encoding process. I just keep seeing that yellow and grey barber pole progress bar moving, but nothing
ever happens.
I've used this process for months with no problems and now it won't work. My coworkers and I have the same setup and we are each
haveing nothing but problems ever since Premiere and AME went past 7.0.
I saw it mentioned in another question to uncheck "Enable native Premiere Pro sequence import". I tried that yesterday and it worked.
Today it does not.
Please help, this is getting rediculous the amount of problems we are suddenly having with Adobe products and a maxed out Mac machine.After poking around the internets and reading this thread and others, I did the following. I am not sure WHICH of these steps lead to it working, so I will list all.
- Deleted all contents of "media cache" and "media cache files" directories. I tried hitting the "clean" button (in PPro prefs), but after waiting 5 minutes and the progress bar only getting to like 10%, I just hit "cancel" and deleted the files myself, brute force. Took all of 45 seconds. Then, for good measure, I hit the "clean" button again, and it finished in seconds. I did this for both PPro and AME, and both had identical media settings.
- Restarted AME and trashed prefs (holding "shift" while booting). Because of hitting this error before, I already had "Enable Native PPro import" checkmark ticked. When I trashed prefs, if went back on. For fun, I left it on.
- Searched project drive with my media on it for all ".CFA" files on it (because my media settings generates them next to source media when possible). I deleted.
- Restarted computer.
- Opened Premiere. Opened project. Let it reconnect all media and re-generate all CFA files. When everything was silent (took about 30 mins) I exported to Queue. Before I had experimented with using audio render files. I left that box off this time.
- Used the "metadata" settings in the export queue to NOT have it transfer ANY metadata from the project to the rendered file.
- Queue took a long time to get started, but eventually it worked.
It should be noted that I am dealing with a large project (5,000 RED clips, 10,000 audio files) where almost every clip is a merged clip. There's maybe 10 tracks of audio in every timeline and the final thing was an assembly sequence made up of 10 nested sequences. So... not simple.
My gut is that this is a problem with the audio. I don't know why, but I think it is. My next try was going to be just exporting video, no audio, and then running audio through ProTools via a OMF.

AME can not get past reading XMP when exporting
So, I'm trying to export a video project that I've been working on. It features high quality images and 1080p video as well as seperate audio files. It is 12 minutes in length. Whenever I queue up the file from Preimere to AME and begin the exporting (as an MOV), it simply sits at reading XMP and no progress it made. As well, I cannot export the video directly from Preimere either.
I done a complete reinstall of the entire Production Suite but no difference has been seen.
I have been able to export small 3-4 minute chunks straight from Premiere, but I would like the video exported as one file.
Export Settings
Quicktime
HD 1080i, 29.97, H.264, AAC 48khz
H.264 codec
I have also tried exporting the project as other files, namely WMV, HD 1080p, 29.97.
I have been having these issues since late August, AME was working fine at the end of May, which was the last time I exported a video.
Video files are 1080p MPEG Movie
Pictures are JPG
Audio is WAV
AME Version 6.0.3.1 (64-bit) CS6

AME CS5.5 freezes while encoding
I upgraded my iMac to OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) a couple weeks ago. I tried encoding a 30 minute 1080p video to H.264, VBR 1 pass and it freezes midway through the encoding process. It did this a few times and I never had this issue before upgrading the Mac OS. Any reason why I am having this issue?
Thanks!Try either disabling GPU acceleration in PPRO before exporting to AME or queuing up only one job at a time.
There's a lengthy thread here on the forums about similar issues with AME CS5.5. One big thing to keep in mind is that the hang on AME's side is just a symptom--a result of a problem upstream--and there have been a number of different issues that all resulted in AME hanging while encoding. We fixed several of these issues in CS6, but at least a few known cases remain. So it's worth downloading the trial version of PPRO CS6 to see if your case is fixed.
Also, there are subtle differences in the particulars of the hang, such as whether it hangs in about the same spot with a given sequence--if so, then there's probably something about assets or effects/transitions at that point that is triggering the issue. If AME hangs at different points in a given encode, then it might be a resource issue on your system, such as RAM getting maxed out. -
Problems reading .xmp sidecar files after moving .nefs in bridge CS6
Problem with CS6 beta. Whenever I move a set of edited (using LR4 with metadata saved to folder) .nef files in bridge to new folder, the .xmp files are not recognised in bridge. They are thre if you look in Windows explorer. If I then find the files in LR4 and resave the adjustments, then becomes visible again. Consistent error on each attempt in different folders. Move was via Ctrl A + dragging in bridge. .nefs were form a Nikon D3.

The standard functionality (since I have been using bridge back in CS2) was to move the .xmp files along with the .nef files (although you only see the .nef files directly in bridge). When I say not reading .xmp files I mean that none of the adjustments are visible in the target bridge folder, equally the icons you would normally see on the top RHS showing adjustments have been made are no longer visibile (remember that I have cheked using windows explorer that the .xmp files did succesfully migrate to the target folder). Having been using CS5 bridge on the same machine for several years and have never had this lack of functinonality, therefore I am reporting it as a potential bug in CS6 beta bridge.
I should also confirm that before they were moved, no problems at all in opening the .nef files in camea raw 7.0 and all edits honoured. -
What does "reading xmp..." actually mean?
I know this may seem like a silly question, but i cannot find the answer to it anywhere. Some projects take ages to get past this stage, others don't. What is media encoder doing whilst displaying "Reading XMP..."? One project in particular stays on that for a very long time (it hasn't yet got past it and it's been ten minutes!) - it is a 3 hour long timeline with DSLR footage etc, but right now i am only trying to render out the first 2 minutes of it as a test. Do XMP files become corrupt, could this be why it sometimes gets stuck on reading xmp for a long time?
I am running a custombuilt macpro (it works perfectly fine!!) with an i7 3.9GHz CPU, 16gb ram and a geforce gtx560ti gfx card on Lion 10.7.5, I have no plans to upgrade to Mountain Lion as I already tried and it slowed my system down to the pace of a snail.
Any help is much appreciated!AME can show that and get stuck there when the Importer (the plugin that decodes the footage or does the dynamic link back to a sequence) get's confused.
There is a bug in CS6 that crashes after that "Reading XMP" is displayed. It suggests that it's the XMP read that died but sometimes it's the next bit that didn't update the status.
There are also other times that the .xmp sidecar file is corrupted. If you do have an xmp sidecar file delete it and the Importer will re-generate it.
Having said all that.....
When Premiere/AME/AfterFX etc open a file they need to gather basic information about that file like length, framerate, width, height, pixel aspect ratio.
With some file formats that's not easily gathered from a header at the front of the file.
So, it has to scan the entire file to work out that information.
"Reading XMP" is reading any metadata (like exposure, apature f/T-stop, ISO, etc) but it's also the above indexing.
So, if you have a video format, expecially h.264, which is lacking in the basic information it has to decode the entire movie to work it out. That takes time.
Fortunately after the first time it's done this it'll put a .xmp/.xmpses/.index file next to it so that it doesn't need to do it again. -
How Much Ram does AME CS5 use for an average HD Encode?
Hello,
I know this is a tough question but I would like to learn what factors control or limit the performance of AME CS5.
I have 12GB of ram in my Windows 7 64bit system but AME CS5 will only use 3 GB when encoding and HD file to say Mpeg-2.
Is 3GB all it needs? Would more ram do anything to speed up the encoding?
I know that encoding is largely a CPU intensive task but after experimenting with RAID 0, I discovered disc read speed makes a large difference in the encoding time. So I would like to know if ram plays any part in encoding time?
ThanksThanks for your reply.

AME CS5, Quicktime & H.264 encoding - very poor
Hi all,
I seem to be stumped on an encoding issue - whenever I encode .mov files with the H.264 codec, they always come out looking like, well like a first generation web video - ie like S$*T.
My best guess is that the profile is preset to use 'baseline' - if so, is there a way to change this? I can't find any options to change to change the profile, or levels, or anything with regards to H.264 - there is a "codec settings" button, but that is grayed out.
Am I just a dummy and missing some key setting in the interface?
If I go back to CS3 and export with the same settings, I get great looking video - but of course since the project was edited in CS5, I can't go backwards.....
If I am a dummy, can anyone point me in the direction on how to get good looking .mov videos out of AME CS5?
Thanks,
~Mikewhenever I encode .mov files with the H.264 codec, they always come out looking like, well like a first generation web video - ie like S$*T.
I did a quick test of an H.264 MOV earlier today for someone else; check it out here. This is PAL DV to H.264, at about 2Mbps; I think it looks OK. I can get much better from the MainConcept H.264 encoder, or an external encoder, but it's usable.

According to MediaInfo, the H.264 MOV generated by Premiere is actually using the Main profile; the Level varies based on frame size and where you limit the bitrate. You don't have a lot of options here because, well, I don't think Apple's/QuickTime's implementation of H.264 gives you many options. It's a pretty rotten encoder, at least in comparison to some of the other choices out there.
If you want more flexibility in creating an H.264 encode, use the H.264 format; it's in the same list as QuickTime. You'll have much more you can choose from and more flexibility when controlling your encode. It still doesn't give you as much control as, say Sorenson Squeeze (MainConcept codec) or x264 (open source H.264 encoder, which gives you even more than MainConcept), but you can get some decent looking encodes. The video will be put in an MP4 container, which will playback in QuickTime.
Do you need an MOV? If so, check out MPEG Streamclip. I'm assuming you're using Windows, so that's where the link goes; there's a Mac version as well, however. Anyway, MPEG Streamclip is my go-to gadget when I absolutely have to send an H.264 MOV. It's still using Apple's encoder, but it looks better, and you have a little more control. Just spit out an uncompressed file from Premiere (has to be an uncompressed AVI or else any kind of MOV) and encode from Streamclip--works a treat. -
I noticed that AME CS5 does not support Prores or quicktime. I also noticed that the Video codec settings is limited only to MainConcept H.264 Video so I can't even output to other file formats. Does AME CS6 support Prores and other output formats?
ThanksThanks Todd,
I already have FCP intstalled and the Quictime and Prores components from Apple. However, my version of AME CS5 only gives me the following options:
Format options are limited to H.264 or FLV / F4V
Basic video settings limited to MainConcept H.264 Video
I suspect I need to upgrade to CS6 Version for more Format and Video settings options?
Thanks for your help. -
Hi, I can't seem to get an answer to this anywhere. There seems to be a lot less codec’s in CS5 than my previous version of CS4 and I want to import and export different file types.
How can I introduce more codec’s into AME CS5 on my windows 7 PC?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Simon
PS. Adobe - I would like to know why an upgrade would have less functionality?As you may know, "Creative Suite CS5" is a version, not a product. Within any given CS version, you can buy 4 different suites that bundle various point products, and you can purchase the point products separately.
As for why certain suites or point products unlock only a limited set of codecs, that decision hinges on the fact that Adobe has to pay a third party for some codecs, such as MPEG2. So the management team for each point product has to decide whether enough users of that product will want all the codecs to warrant paying that fee for each and every license. Let's say the royalty fee for a codec is $1 per license but Acrobat estimates that only 1% of its users will take advantage of that additional codec. In that case, Adobe would pay $100 in royalties for every 100 licenses sold, and only 1 customer would really benefit.
Re: the WMV mystery, let us know if you think of any differences in how the clips were created or if you post some for us to investigate. Until then, there's no way for us to help you. -
How do you configure AME CS5.5 to overwrite existing output files?
How do you configure AME CS5.5 to overwrite existing output files? So far the only options I have found are to increment the output file name or fail. From the explaination of file increment I would have expected overwrite to be the alternative. We work daily with the same file(s) on an hourly basis and convert via watch folder to over a dozen file types and network mapped destinations. Re-using the same file name is critical to the final project (updating website content). Does anyone have any suggestions?
Has there been any updates on overwriting output files in CS6? This would be extremely helpful.

Adding/Reading XMP Metadata in a psd file
Hi,
I'm having some troubles to understand how to add and read XMP metadata on a psd file. I followed the Panel developer guide tutorial, and try to look on the internet for some answers, but I'm still stuck ...
Here is the simple example I'm trying to make (using part of the code from the panel developer guide) :
The function loads the XMP Script Library.
@returns True if the XMP Script Library was loaded successfully.
@type Boolean
function loadXMPLibrary(){
if ( !ExternalObject.AdobeXMPScript ){
try{
ExternalObject.AdobeXMPScript = new ExternalObject('lib:AdobeXMPScript');
}catch (e){
alert("Can't load XMP Script Library");
return false;
return true;
The function unloads the XMP Script Library.
function unloadXMPLibrary(){
if( ExternalObject.AdobeXMPScript ) {
try{
ExternalObject.AdobeXMPScript.unload();
ExternalObject.AdobeXMPScript = undefined;
}catch (e){
alert("Can't unload XMP Script Library");
Try to put a new property into the metadata
if( app.activeDocument || !loadXMPLibrary()){
var xmp = new XMPMeta(activeDocument.xmpMetadata.rawData);
xmp.setProperty( XMPConst.NS_EXIF, "myProperty", "test" );
activeDocument.xmpMetadata.rawData = xmp.serialize();
unloadXMPLibrary();
Window.alert(activeDocument.xmpMetadata.rawData);
I don't really know where I'm wrong, could you help me please ?
Thanks,
JulienRather mess with EXIF and Dublin Core namespaces, wouldn't it be better to create your own?
IE:
#target photoshop
addtoMeta();
function addtoMeta(){
if(!documents.length) return;
if (ExternalObject.AdobeXMPScript == undefined) ExternalObject.AdobeXMPScript = new ExternalObject("lib:AdobeXMPScript");
var xmp = new XMPMeta( activeDocument.xmpMetadata.rawData);
var myNamespace = "http://my.fantastic.newspace/";
var myPrefix = "nsfns:";
XMPMeta.registerNamespace(myNamespace, myPrefix);
xmp.setProperty(myNamespace, "myProperty", "A Test String");
app.activeDocument.xmpMetadata.rawData = xmp.serialize(); -
Photoshop CS5.1 won't read raw files from Canon EOS M
Photoshop cs5.1 won't read raw files from canon eosM, what to do?
The EOS M requires at least Camera Raw 7.2 but Raw 7.2 is only compatible with CS6 or higher (CS5 is only compatible up to Raw 6.7)
http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
To open and edit Raw files, either upgrade to CS6 or join the Cloud and get the CC version.
Alternatively convert the Raw files from the EOS M to DNGs using the free DNG converter then edit the DNGs in CS5.1
