AME GPU mac pro 1,1 Yosemite
Hi,
I'm looking for a GFX card that can be used for render acceleration on a mac pro 1,1 that I've managed to get Yosemite working on. I currently have a Geforce 8800GT but doesn't seem to be supported.
Any recommendations as I cant really afford to upgrade my Mac just for render acceleration.
Thanks,
ae
You have two 250GB HDD in there. What are they used for?
They would be old and not be contributing much - the efi boot loader for one?
Mac Pro 1.1 running Yosemite 10.10.1 (using a modified efi boot file)
2 x 512MB FBDIMMs are adding a lot of heat for next to zero in memory, and easy to replace for $23 for 2x2GB NEMIX
Anytime I see this:
hard restarting the computer it reports that there has been a graphics issue
Then you should either do
Safe Boot
Boot and Repair from another hdd
Restore from a known good image from prior - when it was stable.
And check around - there is support that you might do better with for Yosemite on 1,1

2009 Mac Pro upgrade to Yosemite failed
Hi,
Seven days in and my 2009 Mac Pro is still dead. Very frustrated. It had a 4x3TB AppleRAID array in RAID1+0 giving 6TB. I initially did an upgrade to Yosemite and it got stuck at the half-way point after the restart. Yes, I did patiently wait ... but gave up after 12 hours (left it overnight). I assume the upgrade was supposed to finish sooner than that?
Found one stripe in the RAID array was 'degraded' - replaced that disk (seems they had 11000 hours on them) but it was impossible (for me) to see how to get the new disk back into the RAID scheme under Disk Utility (booted up using an upgraded MacBook). Once all the disks were removed from the array, Disk Utility gave no option to create a new RAID scheme, so I downloaded SoftRAID - yay, my RAID array was back (seems Apple gave up on their software RAID in 2009?).
However, still no joy. Created a Yosemite install USB drive - seems to run but then fails at the end ... "couldn't bless installation disk: /Volumes/Image Volume".
Okay, so downloaded the Mavericks installer and created an install USB drive - same as Yosemite ... can't bless the installation disk.
What else can I try? The Yosemite upgrade seems to have well and truly screwed my poor Mac Pro. I'd already successfully upgraded two of our four Macs successfully to Yosemite (one upgrade and one clean install) so thought it was okay.
I might try booting off one of the Macs again, with the Mac Pro in target disk mode, and try to run the installer to install Mavericks or Yosemite onto the Mac Pro's RAID array as an external disk ...
Otherwise ... ?Booted the Mac Pro from the MacBook Air running Yosemite in target disk mode. Ran the Yosemite installer on the MBA to install on the Mac Pro's SoftRAID array "Hollie" - when the installer tells me it's going to restart I see the final logs written at 04:50 below:

Early 2008 Mac Pro to run Yosemite?
Hello all.
I have an early 2008 Mac Pro 3.1 with quad-core Intel Xeon and I am trying to do a clean install of Yosemite with a bootable USB flash drive. When I power up the machine (while holding option key) I see the Yosemite installer. I double click it. I get the apple logo with the progress bar across the bottom, but it only gets about 25% of the way and then I get the circle with a line. Any ideas? I have upgraded the EFI per (EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs - Apple Support)
Thank you!The installer flash drive is defective or you don't have a 2008 MP.
Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mavericks/Yosemite- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

2007 Mac Pro (10.6.8) cannot upgrade to Yosemite?
Hi everyone. first time posting. I've just tried to upgrade my Late 2007 Mac Pro desktop to Yosemite (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8) and got this message:
"This version of OS X 10.10 cannot be installed on this computer."
I dug a bit deeper.... and found this:
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
Xserve (Early 2009)
So, my question is then how can I upgrade the OS to a late 2007 make and model of Mac Pro? Is there a middle step to upgrade like there was with snow leopard? A quick google search did not turn up much. I've got enough RAM, HDD space, etc. This is the only sticking point.
Is this year model stuck with snow leopard?
Any help would be much appreciated.
thanks
claneYou have a Mac Pro 2,1 model which cannot run anything above Lion 10.7.5. You don't have a MP Early 2008 model.

Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Lion System Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
or Xeon processor
2. 2GB of memory
3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
4. 7GB of available space
5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply. -
PPro Performance Variance on Mac Pro 2013: CC Version 7.0 vs. Version 8.0
Hi,
I've been editing on a late 2013 Mac Pro model with Yosemite (see system specs in the JPEG below). I have really mixed results editing with the most up to date version of Premiere Pro CC. Playback in a timeline lags significantly with 4K and standard HD 1080p media and the software crashes more often than I would like. I have tried a few things like checking the permissions status of varying media and project folders. I do not use GPU-based rendering as that has been problematic, creating pink lines etc. in the resulting previews and exports. Even after previews are rendered for a timeline, playback still lags regardless of media resolution.
In general, as a Premiere project becomes more complex, crashes become more frequent and playback lags even more. Dynamic Linking with AE causes so many crashes that is basically not functional. The only plug-ins I'm using are Magic Bullet and FilmConvert.
I'm not a huge fan of the shift in workflow/edit logic in FCP X, and want to avoid making that transition if I can. In an attempt to test the varied performance of Premiere, I have reverted to a previous version, CC 7.0. MY initial testing shows that this version renders previews more quickly (still without GPU assistance) and playback seems to lag less. Of course I imported an XML from a project originating in V. 8.0 and there are a few translation issues mostly related to warp stabilizing and color correction, which can be fixed if the overall performance boost is greater.
I have read a handful of forums of users experiencing similar or even more drastic difficulty running Premiere on a new MacPro platform. I have explored some of the troubleshoots suggested, but no major changes in performance. It seems to be hit or miss in terms of Premiere/MacPros playing well together. Strange that no one factor can seem to be pinpointed.
Has anyone else been fiddling with this option of using a previous version of Premiere on a Mac Pro? Any success? Other suggestions to improve performance in the latest version?
Thanks!I just had an interesting thought.
I use the method of dragging a clip to the "new item" button to create a matching sequence of my majority media type for a project. Have there been any bugs or issues reported with this technique on the latest version of Premiere Pro CC? This is a possibility I haven't yet explored in terms of the issues I am experiencing with playback. When this thought dawned on me today, I took a look at my sequence settings in a troublesome clip, and am not sure it quite matches up. In this example, details in screenshot below, my majority footage was shot on a Canon XA20. The resulting sequence is using at ARRI Cinema editing mode. That seems to be a mis-match, but maybe not? Thoughts? Suggestions? Helpful resources about "editing modes" and optimization for playback? Any help appreciated. Thanks! -
How to allow multiple users login to a MAC PRO without interruption?
I have a mac pro, which runs Yosemite, (2013 module) to be used as a server. However, I have difficult to let multiple users to use the mac simultaneously.
Objective:
One person uses the mac directly on his desktop, while the others to login remotely though VNC from PC (win 7/Linux).
The users have their own workspace, and they will not interrupt each other.
What I tried:
I created two mange accounts on the MAC.
Account 1 was used to directly login on the mac desktop.
Account 2 was used to login to the mac from a PC though VNC. (I also tried this from a Centos workstation with the Tiger VNC viewer)
Problem:
When account 2 is login, the location monitor will automatically change to that account as well. Both accounts shared exactly the same screen, mouse & keyboard actions. It is impossible to let multiple users to use the MAC pro simultaneously without interruptions.
If I use "hdiutil attach" to mount a dmg file though SSH with account 2, the folder will automatically show in the local desktop login with account 1.
Question:
I read something about the "Per-user screen sharing". It says, "You can remotely log into a Mac with any user account on that computer and control it, without interrupting someone else who might be using the computer under a different login." Is it possible to do this from a PC or Linux client?
If the problem is simply due to the poor functionality of the build-in VNC service in Yosemite, I appreciate your help to suggest some other decent VNC server for Yosemite. I know the Vine Server (OSXvnc), but I failed to install it on the mac because it is incompatible with the Yosemite.
Does the SSH is supposed to work in this way in OSX? I mean the local account can see the folder mounted by another account though SSH.
If any specific version of Yosemite is required to allow multiple users to access a mac simultaneously? Just as the win 7 professional allow only one user to login in at each time. But with the remote desktop server of windows, multiple users are able to use the same computer at the same time without any problem.
If you familiar with any of the above questions, please help. Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.
I know the best way to get the solution is to direct call the apple support. However, it is really not easy to call them. Because it always results with long waiting time and then the people pick up the phone will transfer my call to an expert who will make me to describe the problem again.
Since I'm not interested in the technique details of all the problems, it is also grateful if you would provide a direct instruction to let me setup the computer for the purpose.
Thanks you very much for your kindly help.I cannot help with the screen sharing, although I have just tried it with a RealVNC client on an iPad and it seemed to work OK.
However on the disk showing on all users desk tops have you unchecked the "ignore ownership on this volume" check box? You can check the drives permissions with CMD i command. -

clone your system and repair it with Disk Warrior instead
Or try a clean test system install on another drive
A must: SmcFanControl 2.2 - a mere 400 rpm extra to keep air cooling up
Try to run w/o externals. MyBook included.
Is that a 7200.11 1TB? they had a lot of issues.
Run AHT off your OEM DVD.
2008 had to have EFI and SMC updates to deal with freezes on wake from sleep, and like all models, high inrush current. Hopefully you have a UPS and is 1500VA unit.
When you do hard restart from power button, you almost certainly add more directory errors and to files requiring immediate attention to repair and rebuild the directory; and to scan and repair and delete cache and temp files and folders. A must. Invest in bootable backups SuperDuper along with Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro 6, maybe Drive Genius 3 but I'd rate that #3).
TimeMachine has its own bad habits, especially with Green drives and some externals.
Try to rule out everything and then add back one at a time.
And it may just be time to replace the 8800, very common, a couple threads this week, and it is 3 yrs old. Might want ATI 5870 or 5770. -
Re: 2010 Mac Pro + Yosemite + Radeon 7950
Just been told by Apple Technical Guy (19 December 14) that my ATi Radeon HD 5770 graphics card (bought from Apple!) is no longer supported in Yosemite!! I can try replacing with an ATi HD 2600XT, return to Mavericks or put up with the inconvenience that my primary screen seems to be the VGA source and each time I log in I get another Desktop Space! The odd thing is that the HD 2600XT seems to be an older graphics card than my HD 5770? Not sure what;'s going on? See details of problem here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6618898
Mac Pro (Early 2008), Radeon HD 5770, YosemiteHi Hattter!
Definitely nothing wrong with the card as I still have a Mavericks Partition on my system where everything works fine. Something has happened following the upgrade to Yosemite. This is how I described the problems to the Apple Tech Guy when I set up a new Yosemite partition ("Yosemite Test") WITHOUT transferring any of my own data files i.e. it's not a software conflict problem:
I still seem to have the same set of problems:
(1) Progress Bar starts on the main screen (DELL 2407WFP), screen goes blank, the Progress Bar completes on the small screen (Panasonic 19” LCD TV) which then asks for the logon credentials;
(2) First time boot from "Yosemite Test", the small screen defaulted to SVGA 800x600 rather than WXGA 1280x768 under Mavericks;
(3) First time boot from "Yosemite Test”, I noticed that in "Preferences / Display / Arrangement" the white "menu bar" was above the small screen ie the small screen seems to have defaulted as the principle screen during Yosemite set up even though the small screen connects to my Mac Pro via the VGA connection on the ATi Radeon HD 5770 GPU and the main screen via the DVi port;
(4) As before 1280x768 isn’t a listed resolution in "Preferences / Display / Scaled" unless I press "alt / Detect Displays / Scaled" when 1280x768 appears and can be set (and stays set through a Restart). NB: the TV screen (rather than the Mac Pro) only reports the correct resolution when I select 60Hz;
(5) As before I’m collecting new desktops each time I Restart - the new desktops showing up in Mission Control above the main screen;
(6) Whilst waiting to logon, the wallpaper shadow behind both main screen and small screen are the same although once logged-on the wallpapers may change - the the wallpaper on the main screen becoming the wallpaper on the small screen, the previous small screen wallpaper becomes an additional desktop in Mission Control at the top of the main screen. Finally the Yosemite default wallpaper (mountain) seems to appear at random on the main screen????
(7) As before, logging out (rather than Restart) and the logon credentials are back on the main screen.
I’m assuming this points to a problem with the Graphics Card Driver rather than a software conflict. Let me know if you need any more information.
There seems to be numerous reports of graphic problems with Yosemite some of which involve the HD 5770 card. From your comments, are you suggesting that there is no driver problem?

New Mac Pro, AMD, Prem Pro CC & GPU Acceleration Issues
Hi,
I am not exactly what you would call an expert at Adobe Premiere Pro but I have been struggling to make a few exports over the last few days and yesterday discovered that the issue was about Premiere Pro not playing nicely with the AMD FirePro D500 installed.
With GPU Acceleration (OpenCL) turned on I get strobing and all sorts of glitchiness. Once it is turned off, everything works fine. The exports seems to take more than twice as long but they are perfect.
I have found very little about this online and nothing identically matched my experience.
Has anyone else had this? Have you found a work around?
Machine is nMP 3.5 Ghz 6-Core 64GB RAM with AMD FirePro D500.

Pr has been perfect on my new Mac Pro (D700s, but that shouldn't matter). Are you exporting direct from Pr or queuing to AME? If one, can you try the other and see if the same thing happens?
What are you exporting to?
Is OS X all up to date, I assume? And you're running the latest version of Pr CC? -
I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and the GPU is causing issues with Yosemite. There are a number of issues I have run across:
If I have four tabs open on Safari then I start to get a flickering on the screen from the GPU refreshing
When I leave the computer alone for more than 20 mins the screen saver should start -- what happens is that the screen goes to black. When I move the cursor I do not get the login screen. I have to reboot
FireFox Web browser will not run
I get issues with the computer running very slowly
I have already turned off the transparency option in settings. Any ideas??
Cheers
Matt
MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10), GPU / Video Card with YosemiteDo you have more than one OS on the Mac?
You may want to look at something like http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/. This has a Free Trial window, but it is a commercial application. If there are any heat/sensor issues, this may help.
A SMC Reset or PRAM/NVRAM reset may also help.

Mac Pro's (early 2008) Back up plan towards a possible OS upgrade to Yosemite
Hello All. Here’re some of the details/background info…hopefully all this won’t be so annoying. Your feedback is highly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
I have 2 Mac Pro’s (Early 2008) 3,1 both running SL (10.6.8). One I have been using non-stop throughout these years, I’d call it MP 2008 (A). The other one once belong to a friend who actually bought it around the same time I purchased mine, only that he didn’t use it much and just recently decided to sell it to me. I’d call it MP 2008 (B). Both MP’s are very light on data on the main, boot HD, just applications,… as everything I work on is kept in external hard drives and backups. I do not usually download any third party stuff (only when strictly necessary for my work) and essentially it’s all about the software and applications (Adobe CS3 and LR 0.2) I need to do my pretty basic work.
All pretty old stuff by now, I know.
Following a couple of mishaps and lots of good advice in these forums, (thanks to the hatter, etc.) I went ahead and bought 16GB of RAM for both, and an NVidia Graphics Card (all from Amazon.com) for my MP 2008 (A) to replace it after it went bad, and everything has been working just fine. As you can tell, I have not tried to upgrade much, but rather keep everything stock and running as smoothly as possible.
I am afraid the next big, important thing I MUST do is back up my almost 6 years-old HD (I know, it should’ve been done long ago). Frankly, I have never done it before because I didn’t even know that could be possible…I learned about it right here, in this forum. In this sense, much I have also read (here) about the SSD option, and about how great of an upgrade that could be too, but I have decided to stick to the regular 3.5” for now. (I just recently found out those SSD even existed!). Hopefully, once I gain a bit of confidence on how this works I’ll jump into the SSD option, cards, etc. So, I purchased 2X 3.5” SATA III HD’s to try cloning my MP 2008 (A) boot, main HD and get this process over with.
QUESTIONS
QUESTION #1: After installing the internal hard drives in bays 2 and 3: Do I have to specifically format them in order to turn them into bootable copies? If so, how do I do that? I have read about using ‘Disk Utility’ to format external hard drives for this purpose but I don’t know if that would apply for internal hard drives as well.
QUESTION #2: What are the settings/features you all recommend I should select/or deselect on CCC so I can have exact, bootable copies of my original HD? No fancy stuff, advanced options, etc…just what I need to have good enough copies that just work.
QUESTION #3: How do I test them?
I noticed that under “System Preferences/System/Startup Disk” I can select the drive/system I want to use to start up my computer from. My question is:
QUESTION #4: Can I permanently choose any of the Mac Pro four (4) bays/bootable hard drives as the main drive/system for startup? I always thought I could only be done from the original, ‘main’ bootable drive in bay 1.
QUESTION #5: What if the copy fails? How do I go back to the HD that works or to the next copy, for that matter?
About my MP 2008 (B): In an effort to sell me his MP, my friend (as knowledgeable as I am) messed up something that delays the start up a lot. I noticed that in the finder, the applications appear double, etc., so I am not so happy with it. Even though the little house icon has his name in the finder, he was able to make me the Administrator for the machine (I don’t know how). But again, it starts up to the typical chime, then a gray screen for quite a loooong while, then the apple logo, then the loading animation…and theeennnn it starts…and no known issues from there. In other words, I am sure he messed something up there while transferring this machine to me and now its startup is so delayed.
QUESTION #6: Let’s say that both the bootable HD copies I created on my MP 2008 (A) work fine: Can I take one out and install it in my MP 2008 (B) and eventually turn it into my startup drive and work from there too? Will this eventually lead to conflicting stuff? (Two machines, same identical cloned start up drive??).
Eventually, the plan is that I learn how to do all this so I can move on and upgrade with a clean install of Yosemite pretty soon.
Hopefully, both my Mac Pro’s 2008 A and B will last me a bit more and I can get to squeeze a few more seasons from them. They are awesome machines!
As you can tell, in theory I might have a little bit of a clue, but all is in the details. If you don’t mind, please shed some light on this process I am about to begin…thanks a bunch!Thank you!

Re: Mac Pro's (early 2008) Back up plan towards a possible OS upgrade to Yosemite in response to Juan Huerta
All new drives need to be partitioned GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled before they can be used.
OK, is that an option I'll be prompted to by the OS or do I have to "tell" that to...Disk Utilities (?)
If cloning is your purpose then use Disk Utility's Restore option. It will clone the drives and their Recovery HD partitions automatically.
I didn't know that Disk Utility had an option for cloning a bootable drive...is it better than CCC? (I have used neither one) I really would like to save $40 and avoid downloading additional software/applications...please if you don't mind...what option would that be once I click on "Disk Utility"? If you know of a good link or reliable article on the topic that will work for me too.
Test a clone be trying to boot the computer from it.
Any bootable drive in any bay can be used to boot the computer. Use Startup Drive preferences to set the desired boot volume.
Erase the target and try again.
But if the computer fails to start because I didn't create a good copy, how do I go back? Keyboard shortcuts? I keep reading that a wired keyboard must be used...and that's scary. If that's true, could I hook up any of my Windows based keyboards via USB?
Erase the drive and install OS X. You cannot use any software installed by the prior owner that was purchased via the App Store including OS X. You must start from scratch. (this actually is 5B rather than item 6.)
Well, he created an Admin account for me and I have been handling updates and everything with the new password he created for me. I wonder if I could access the Apple Store with my ID though...it's all under my name in that computer though, so I figure that at the Apple Store I'd just enter my ID...I guess, I have not tried that yet

My MacPro's HD seems to be failing. None of the tests I run indicate that, but I get constant spinning balls and everything takes a long time. I bought a 2nd HDD and installed it in the 2nd bayou my Early 2009 Mac Pro. I formatted it and want to install Yosemite and have the Mac boot off the new drive. It is currently running OS X 10.9.5. When I go to update to Yosemite it begins to download. Will it give me the option of which drive to install on? Or will it just upgrade the original Mac's HD?
A Samsung 850 EVO 128GB SSD $75 now and makes a huge improvement. But get the 250GB which is $99. 500GB $199
Wish you asked us first Awesome prices and performance.
Output from Etrecheck is an easy "quick check" of what your system is carrying around and what baggage it has.
Move data to a 'data and media library" drive.
Use CCC to skip the user data folders except ~/Library and clone to SSD
And might want to save the installer .ESD package for use as clean installer and to be able to boot from. -
