AME or After Effects "add to render que"

Seeing how Adobe Media Encoder CS5 is now 64 bit, should I use that to export my projects instead of After Effects render engine?  Or is that 64 bit as well and won't matter?

There are pros and cons to each. The standalone AME application has two-pass encoding, so some formats can be compressed more effectively. Also, you can be encoding in AME and still working in After Effects.
What, exactly, are you trying to do. If you answer that, it's easier to guide you one way or the other.
See "Rendering and exporting overview" and Adobe Media Encoder Help.

  • After Effects Won't Render Using H.264

OK, I am trying to use H.264 codec but I keep getting an error and I can't figure out why.  I select (Composition > Add to Render Que), then I select "Output Module > Custom and select "Lossless" and select H.264 and then get the message below:
"After Effects: For reliable output with H.264 compression, please choose it directly from the Output Module Format menu instead of via QuickTime. (44 :: 81)"
So I then did as it said and selected the drop down arrow beside Output Module and then selected "Custom" and then selected H.264. and then I get the same message:
"After Effects: For reliable output with H.264 compression, please choose it directly from the Output Module Format menu instead of via QuickTime. (44 :: 81)"
An idea what's going on? Why does it give me this message when I am doing it the way it is telling me? How can I render using H.264?
    Thanks

Are you using the trial version of After Effects?
    from "Supported output formats":
"The free trial version of Adobe After Effects software does not include some features that depend upon software licensed from parties other than Adobe. For example, mocha for After Effects, some effect plug-ins, and some codecs for encoding MPEG formats are available only with the full version of Adobe After Effects software."
H.264 is an MPEG format (MPEG-4, part 10).

  • Installing After Effects on headless render nodes

I'm trying to install After Effects CS5.5 render engine on a set of render nodes that don't have DVD drives (or any optical drive).  I was advised to copy the install files from the DVD to the desktop via flash drive.  I did that and the install starts OK but then it asks for the 2nd disc.  I copied that disc's content to the desktop also but I can't get it to find it.  Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Scott

You should be able to copy all of the files off of the disc into the same folder and it should work, but if you are having trouble, you can download the trial of CS5.5.
The trials are located here - http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs5-5-direct-download-links.html.  There is a forum post about installing previous trials - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/981369.
On the download page, please read the whole page before clicking the links - people miss some important information on the page that causes issues.

  • After Effect cs4 cannot render jpg on network on mac but render locally okay

After Effect cs4 cannot render jpg on network on mac but render locally okay
We use intel mac pro as workstation, and our servers are windows 2003 servers.
After Effect cs4 H264 render  on network without any problem bud jpeg not.
    Thank You
    Ayhan.

Perhaps you must just enable the Allow Encoding using Legacy CoDecs option in the Quicktime control panel on the network machine or else some of that may not show up. Of course make sure QT is installed correctly in teh first place, as Todd and Rick said. On a server, you may need to set special group policies for that to work, also.

  • AME from After Effects?

I have plug-ins that are only in AE (CS4) but would prefer to render using Adobe Media Encoder. If I export an Adobe Premiere project it won't carry with it the plug-in effects I assume. Whats the solution?

In the Render Queue when I select H.264 I don't get the same options I do from AME H.264.
It's a subset of those options, because AE doesn't support things like 2 pass encoding, for example.
Running AME as a stand alone I can only "add" video files. It doesn't render directly from an AE project.
In the File menu you'll see a menu item called "Add After Effects Composition", only if you have the CS4 Production Premium or Master Collection suites. This will bring the Dynamic Link browser, which lets you pick an AE comp from an AE project and encode that directly from AME standalone.
If you got AE or Premiere Pro as separate point products (ie, not as part of a suite), you won't get that option.

  • After Effects Fails to render due to a big file size?

I recorded some video clips in a x264 codec (AVI) and well since i cant import them into AAE (it wont recognize them) i just did some editng wit sony vegas and  rendered the full video in 1080p uncompressed and it was about 20 GB's total. i added it into AAE to add some color corrections and RAM preview worked normally but when i tried to render it out in blu ray format it would fail within 4 seconds of rendering. i tried other formats and it wouldnt work i even tried to take off the color correction thinking that was it but still failed. is after effects not stable with such heavy file sizes?
or could it be my ram isnt engough (3 gb's) im upgrading to more soon though.
any help would be apreciated so i know what to do in the future thanks a lot.

The total file size is not really relvant.
The important part is the per frame memory usage.
Which OS are you using? RAM starvation can be worse in Win XP 32, since the total available RAM for all applications combined is 2.7 GB.
Try this - render the Comp to a lossless format (such as Quicktime Animation, huge file but you can delete it afterwards), and then close AE and launch Adobe Media Encoder in standalone mode and try to encode using your Blu-Ray preset from AME.

  • After Effects doesn't render!!!!

If I add my composition to the render queue and click render under the best settings, the RAM loads with 10 GB (I have 16) and the program hangs at the first frame....
Also it created an avi-clip (1sec. long) and there is nothing in it?!
Do you have any tipps or solutions?!

Right now, it seems that you think AE should work like many other multimedia applications. It doesn't.  The link above is a good place to learn the After Effects basics.  You can't do much in AE if you don't know the basics.

  • AME and After Effects

I've been making good use of rendering After Effects files in Adobe Media Encoder lately (CS6).  When it comes to needing alpha channels, it doesn't seem to get the job done.
In the AE encoder, I can do a Quicktime, Animation, RGB+Alpha, Straight (unmatted) color.  If I try to do this through AME, I can make it a Quicktime Animation but can't seem to set my RGB+Alpha and Straight (unmatted) settings.  Is there another workaround?
When rendering out 50 comps from a project, it's helpful to have it render in the background using AME so I can keep working in After Effects.

    Jack,
To set whether or not AME encodes an alpha channel, you need to set the bit depth appropriately. See the first part of my response here for how to navigate the difference in terminology:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4652418#4652418
AME encodes alpha channels in QuickTime only as straight, there is no control over premul vs. straight. That's a limitation in AME, it just doesn't have that level of control. (There's a further complication that when After Effects feeds the comp to AME, it does not provide the comp background color as part of the composite. So even if there was a premul option, AME would premul only against black.)
Please submit a feature request for AME if you'd like to see this changed:
    http://www.adobe.com/go/wish
If alpha channel control is an important part of your workflow then you may want to investigate Lloyd Alvarez's Background Renderer script, which will allow you to render your AE comps using a background instance of AE (instead of AME) while you keep working:

  • Rendering MP4 with AME from After Effects is always single-core?

When I render MP4 from After Effects CC 2014.2 (by AME) then rendering always is slow and only single-core, despite that in AE prefs Multiprocessor rendering is set.
    Why?

I have made quick test now.
AE's Render Queue: render time 53s - average CPU load about 50% (12 cores, 8 rendering threads at this case) - 8 threads active in Process Explorer
AME Render: 2m08s - average CPU load about 20% (same machine) - 1 thread active in Process Explorer
(please note that this was simple project; at 8active/12total cores this should be 66% or even more total CPUs load, so probably much time was disk I/Os - if only was 50% of total CUP load)
    So essential question is:
Is AME CC 2014.2 renders AE projects as set in AE prefs in multiprocessing?
Or maybe there is separate option in AME to turn on multiprocessing on AE's projects?

  • After Effects unable to render error -1610153464

I use Adobe CS6. Today, I upgraded to CC. I work on a MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM, and the latest OS X, Mountain Lion. Here's my dilemma.
Although I own the CS6 Master Collection, I have never used After Effects. So, I am an AE newbie. For years I have mainly used the other apps, PhotoShop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, InDesign, etc.
I wanted to prepare a presentation for my company. I purchased an After Effects template that I liked. http://videohive.net/item/new-company-presentation/5182042
When I opened the template I received the following message: "After Effects: this project must be converted from version 9.0 (Windows) and will open as an untitled project. The original file swill be unchanged."
After quite some time creating and preparing all my samples in a Quicktime movies I was ready to customize the AE template.
Following the AE template author's instructions I was able to customize the template, editing text, importing my movies. When I added the "Final Comp" to the Render Cue, and then started rendering, I immediately got the following error: "After Effects error: Rendering error while writing to file '/Users/...Final Comp.mov'. An output device module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupt. (-1610153464)"
I tried rendering the original unedited file. Same error.
    I tried researching solutions.
I turn off my firewall. "blockage in the communication between After Effects and the Adobe QT32 Server." http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2011/02/troubleshooting-quicktime-errors-with-after-ef fects.html
    I tried removing a third-party Quicktime importer components. http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/startup-screen-hangs-premiere-after.html
I tried exporting the file from AE to Premier Pro. But, got the following message when opening the file in Premier:
"The preset is used by one or more sequences in this project requires third-party components that could not be located. These sequences will be modified to use a custom sequence setting instead. To continue editing using the original preset, quit the application without saving the project, then install any third-party components that are required and reopen the project." Note: The author of the AE template said that no external plug-ins were used, that everything was created in AE.
Also, when opening the file in Premier, a "Load Project" window open listing the following:
"Video filter missing: AE.ADBE Color Control
    "Video filter missing: AE.ADBE Fill
"Video filter missing: AE.ADBE Slider Control"
I attempted to do a render from Premier anyway. But, got the following error: "Could not connect to Adobe After Effects. Please verify that Adobe After Effects and Adobe Dynamic Link components are installed." I checked, They are!
I finally "bit the bullet" and upgrade to, and installed the Creative Cloud version of After Effects hoping that this may be a solution.
Today, I installed After Affects CC. This time when I began the render, AE started to render. Then, after a couple seconds of video being generated the same errors reappeared!
Can anyone offer some guidance as to how I can get this resolved?

Today, I created a whole new project. Imported an Adobe Illustrator file with five layers. One background layer, the rest were text layers. The entire project is 11 seconds. I made some minor effects to the text in After Effects, position, and opacity. Went to render it, and the same error appeared.
I have the error log file if it will help.
    Please help.

  • After Effects "Output Module" render error & rendering advice

    Hi all,
I've been working on an AfterEffects project for a few weeks and never had a problem with rendering it before, but in the past few days it has started giving me error messages every time I start a render.
After rendering about 48 - 60 frames of a 2 minute long composition (it doesn't seem to hang in the same place every time), the render freezes and I get this error message:
After Effects error: An output module stopped responding. The file may be damaged or corrupted. You may need to restart After Effects.
The project is really huge -- about 1022 3D layers, mostly all created in Photoshop, as well as some Quicktime movies. Motion blur is turned on for everything. Although the project is big, I have a 3D camera that animates through the scene, so not all the layers are onscreen at all times.
I haven't added anything significant to the composition lately, I've just been adjusting keyframes, so that would lead me to believe the render isn't failing because of a corrupted element.
I'm using Adobe After Effects CS5, Version 10.0.2.4. I have some 3rd party plug-ins installed (Trapcode, Magic Bullet Looks, Optical Flares), but I'm not using any 3rd party effects on this project, though I plan to in the future.
    I'm running the project on a 2 x 2.66 Ghz 6-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro with 14 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM, using OS X version 10.6.8.
Here is some information about my project:
1280 X 720, Square Pixels, 23.976 Frame Rate, Rendering Plug-in: Advanced 3D. For my preferences, I don't have "render multiple frames simultaneously" checked, and I keep 4 GBs of RAM reserved for other applications. I also have OpenGL disabled.
And finally, here are some screenshots of my Render Settings and Output Module for this project:
I'd really appreciate any feedback or advice on how to troubleshoot this error. And I'd also love to hear if the experts on this board have render settings tips or advice on how to set up my render preferences for my particular machine.
Thanks and hope all is well,
    Dan

    Hey Dan,
Really nice post in regards to info provided initially. It's rare to see that these days.
The weird thing in your screen shots that I see, is that in your Output Module Settings, the audio bit-depth settings seem to be grayed out for some reason. Are you using some sort of audio hardware that is customized, or perhaps some compressed audio in your project? Here's what I mean:
Thoughts? Aside from that, your project does sound as if it is pretty intensive, so I'm sure the problem could be occuring elsewhere...

  • After Effects CC 2014 render time problem

    Hello Guys
I'm trying to render a comp in After Effects and it's taking to long to render.
I recently upgraded to AE CC 2014 and now i'm using OSX Mavericks.
In the previous hardware and software setup (After Effects CS6), the same comp was taking about 2 hours to render.
Now the render gradually start's slowing down and it doesn't finish...

Are you experince the same problem?

    I'm on CC2014.0.2

  • Premiere-After Effects Dynamic Link render times vary wildly after minimal composition changes

Here is something strange that happens a lot to me.
I'll have a sequence in Premiere Pro CC 2014 that is entirely or largely an AE comp that I have dynamically linked.  I'll use a specific case as an example, but it's happened with various projects.
In this most recent one the visual (but not audio) of my Premiere sequence is one AE dynamically linked comp of about 90 seconds.  It's more or less a fancy slide show- some photos with moves, some text, motion blur, masking, maybe a few filters.  Fairly basic stuff as far as After Effects goes.
Anyhow, I like to render the sequence in Premiere and then watch it down with music to see if the timing works and make adjustments from there.  That's my usual workflow.  The strange thing is that when I render, the render times can vary tremendously.  With this particular project, one time rendered in about 2 minutes in Premiere.  I watched it down and I noticed a spelling error, which I fixed.  Just changing one word of text in AE.  This, of course, causes the entire linked comp to need to be rendered again in Premiere.  This time when I go to render, it took about 20 minutes and it only got about  70% of the way through.  A huge difference and all I changed was a couple letters, which shouldn't impact how intensive of a render is needed.  What I usually do is cancel the render when it takes that long, then quit Premiere, reopen, and render right away after I open.  When I do this, after the application restart, the sequence will then render in the faster approximately 2 minute duration.  Almost invariably this is true.
So I end up quitting and restarting Premiere a lot to get the faster render times.  But of course that's annoying.
    What is going on here?
I know that some might have critiques of the workflow and watching in Premiere and the fact that one letter change forces the entire sequence re-render.  I know I could break it up and there are ways around that.  But I am not interested in such critiques.  My work flow actually is quite efficient when the 2 minute render time happens.  Just not when it takes 10x more than that for the same thing.  Why are there these huge render time swings?
My guess is that some cache gets filled up, so when the application is just started, and the cache is empty, the render works much better.  But I really do not know.
    Help please.

There is currently a bug that causes Dynamic Link performance to be poor when the main After Effects application is running. (The underlying issue is that the main After Effects application is sending many more messages during Dynamic Link than it needs to.)
The easy workaround is to quit the main After Effects application when using Premiere Pro to process a dynamically linked After Effects composition.
This bug is fixed in an update due to be released in less than two weeks.

  • Premiere pro / After Effects CS6 upgrade , render doesn't save ?

Hi, I have just upgraded CS5.5 to CS6.
I have opened and converted a previous project in CS6 which is linked to After Effects via the dynamic link. The media opened ok but even though it was fully rendered and saved from the previous version I had to re- render the entire sequence ..l. It's a 4 minute timeline and took over an hour to render in premiere CS6 .
Now I have come back to the project today , I have opened After Effects and then opened the project in premiere pro, all the media is connected but I have a red render line again and another hour to wait for rendering until I can start working.
Any tips on getting the render to save so I don't have to re- render each time I open the project.
Is this a problem with converting older CS5.5 projects in CS6 ?
    My system is :

  • After Effects Starts to Render (very slowly), only 1% of RAM used, then crashes

    This is what I have:
    Intel 2nd Gen i7 3820 @ 3.6Ghz
High Performance Liquid Cooling solution for the CPU
    Full size ASUS X79 motherboard
    64GB DDR3 Ram @ 1600Mhz
    1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive
    NVidia GTX560 2GB DDR5 Video Card
    850W Power supply
    Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit Installed/Updated
I installed the latest After Effects, put in all the upgrades. Then I tried to render a template created and...
    1. It begins to render very slowly
    2. It shows that only 1% of the 64Gb of RAM is being used
    3. It crashes after about 2 minutes
I tried implementing multiprocessor as I have a quad core hyperthreaded to make it essentially an 8 core machine. I looked up all kinds of advice about lowering memory for background apps, changing number of cores to use, on and on. I also tried rendering without multiprocessor. Nothing. I am willing to share my AE project with someone, see if they can render it (to check and see if it is something with the project itself, which I doubt).
I just want this to work because I have been looking forward to working with AE a long time.

    hey Nixon,
Memory settings in AE are complete Voodoo...  Properly configuring your RAM etc within after effects is a mindbender and very counter intuitve.
You've probably already read over this link, but just in case...
    http://blogs.adobe.com/toddkopriva/2010/10/please-try-recommended-memory-settings-for-afte r-effects-cs5-and-give-feedback.html
I find that even when my settings are good, i get a hang or a failed render if I don't purge the ram etc before I start a render.
