AMILO pa 3553 acpi problem

Hi!
I've recently switched from Ubuntu to Arch and been tinkering. After getting a (barebone) graphics environment up I began running into problems. My laptop (Fujitsu Siemens AMILO pa 3553) began overheating badly and the fan, while on, didn't increase or decrease in speed. Just humming away at a leisurely and insufficient pace.
So I thought I would fix the problem by forcing the fan speed, which is where I realized my /proc/acpi/fan was missing! It was there when I used Ubuntu and just to make sure I wasn't misremembering I rechecked the specs of my laptop on the internet. It _should_ be acpi compliant.
I've tried running sensors-detect (which assure me that k10temp is correct and loaded and all I need) and no matter what I do, it simply doesn't seem to register anything else than the temperature of my (2) cpus and my AC adapter.
I'm out of ideas. You guys have any?

Yes, yes I did.
As far as I can read the wiki assumes that the OS acknowledges the existence of the fan. I have no problem manually configuring a fan, the problem is when for some reason it won't detect the ACPI for the fan. It worked under Ubuntu and I can read on the internet that my laptop is ACPI compliant, so I know it should be possible for Arch to do this.

  • ACPI problem, dell 4100 install, senthikumar's solution

I have had this problem while booting up from the solaris 8 boot diskette:
ACPI tables not in reclaim memory.
    prom_panic: kmem_free block already free.
    Entering boot debugger:
Another had this same issue and the solution from Senthikumar of Tech Support was to:
    Disable ACPI by either:
    eeprom acpi-user-options=0x2
    OR
editing the /boot/solris/bootenv.rc file and adding the line:
    setprop acpi-user-opttions 0x2
I did the latter of the two with the boot diskette and it made no difference. The problem still is the same. I would like to also try the former solution (eeprom) but I have no idea where or how to enter this command.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
    Andy

    Hi Senthil,
The real problem with Andy is that he can't install the Dell 4100 System with Solaris 8 not booting the machine after installation. And that's understood from his mail. But you are giving the solution after installing Solaris on the system.
"eeprom commands are access through single user mode or multi user mode.
    Example:
    # eeprom acpi-user-options=0x2"
I you don't know and not able to solve the exact problem don't try to give some stupid solution and escape from that.
Since Jan 2001, I am also experiencing the same problem from the solution providers!!

  • MSI 6309 ACPI Problem WinXP installed

    Hi folks,
I've used an MSI-6039 v1.0 (the oldest model with a standing CMOS battery) for nearly 3 years. I installed the newest Windows XP lately and the ACPI does not work now, no Standby,no ACPI option in Control Panel , although i've set the ACPI option enabled in the CMOS. ?( And it worked smoothly before in Win 2k. What is more, my cd-rom now can only work in PIO mode after i installed the latest VIA 4in1 driver. That badly decreases the performance of my PC.i've flashed the BIOS to version 1.9,but it still doesnt work.Anyone can help me to solve the problem?
    Thanks a lot!

    disable acpi
hit f5 as xpo install starts when it says hit f6 for mass storage and pick standard pc from list
hey Thats confusing.  Do we hit f5 at install start or hit f5 when it says "hit f6 for mass storage device"
Has anyone figured out why 6309's continuously reboot after insall.

  • ACPI problem - random hang on boot

Hi, I've just installed Arch 0.8.0 on my Sony PCG-XR1G laptop with Celeron 466Mhz and 128MB Ram. The installation CD hang at boot but I managed to get it work by using the kernel parameter acpi=off. After reboot, my new system still require the parameter acpi=off to boot correctly, or else 90% of the time it will hang (yes, 10% of the time it work perfectly). If I use acpi=off then I cannot shutdown my laptop completely, so I want to try not to use this parameter. Anyone have any idea? I'm running the newest kernel 2.6.20. Kernel 2.6.19 also have the same problem.

Well, problem solved again, I think. My bios has a setting to turn on or off a feature to automatically lower the cpu speed on idle (quite funny with a celeron 466Mhz). Whenever I start the system and the kernel detect the CPU as 138Mhz (around that value), the system hang. Seldomly when it can get the correct value, it run perfectly. Still, I think there are some problem with the ACPI code in the 2.6 kernel. Or maybe it's just because my bios was too old, anyway.

  • M40-129 linux acpi problem

    hey everybody ...
during the last days i installed a gentoo linux on my m40-129 - things were going well until i tried to get acpi working.
i cannot use the onboard ipw2200 wirless card in combination with an acpi kernel. it fails starting the 2200 with 'failed to send TX_POWER command'. disabling acpi in the kernel solves this problem but a notebook without acpi is quite useless ...
is there something wrong with the acpi table or is it a bug in the kernels acpi sources?
    thanks guys ...

    Hi jens
Unfortunately Toshiba dont support the Linux OS and every user must search for solution alone. I have found some interesting link where one Linux user describes how to handle with this problem. Please check it on http://www.linuxforum.com/linux_tutorials/22/1.php
    Good luck!

  • ACPI problem on KT7 TURBO2

    Hi there,
I own a KT7 Turbo2 main board and am having serious problems with it. The problems started when my os (win XP) became unstable and I decided to reinstall it.
After doing my backups, I proceeded with the new XP installation. I formatted the partion and the setup proceeded with copying the files on to the hard disk. This is when I encountered my first problem, when it kept on giving me error messages that file was not copied correctly, which is something I didn't encounter first time I set XP up on my system.(nor during the install in the other M.Board) These errors turned out to be mostly random during the sequential attempts to install the system, but happened every time.
When the system rebooted, the windows logo came on, shortly after which I get the error message that the system is not ACPI compatible. It sometimes suggests trying to disable video shadows and the caches in the BOIS, which I try, and they do not work. I have updated the bois to v3.5, but that does not help.
I also have windows ME (legal version not copy) but that is full of problems as well.  I managed to install it on to my PC but, after the installation finished as soon as I rebooted it gave me a “general system protection” error, when the OS started to boot up. After some experimentation, I found that I could log in safe mode, and if I removed the ACPI components in the system folder in the device manager, the system would be able to log into winME normal with any probs. But then my system would find the ACPI hardware, automatically install it and ask for a reboot. When it did it I would get the “general system protection” error again.
At this point I experienced a range of emotion as conveyed by these smilies  8o  ?(  X(  :(  :O  ;(
To check if it weren’t any one of my components that was causing the problem, I took out all of the components (that were compatible) inserted them in my second PC, and I was able to install both OS’s using the other motherboard, WITHOUT any probs. When I moved the hard drive back with the OS’s on, there were always complications, with setting up the hard ware.
Here are the specs of my PC:
    MSI KT7 TURBO2 M.Board
    Althon XP 1700
    2 x 128MB 133 Ram (256mb total)
Abit Siluro GF2 MX 400 Graphics card
    Realtek Network Card 10/100
    56X CD ROM
Maxtor 540 20 GB Hard Drive
And here are the spec of the system I used to test the components the only thing different was the M. Board and CPU:
     Gigabyte M.Board
AMD Duron 950 MHz (this is the max speed the Gigabyte one could support)
    2 x 128MB 133 Ram (256mb total)
Abit Siluro GF2 MX 400 Graphics card
    Realtek Network Card 10/100
    56X CD ROM
Maxtor 540 20 GB Hard Drive

      :D  :O  ;(  8o      :P  )
After all I tried it can down to a shaby stick of ram. Actual I didn't switch ram chips between systems, I might have descovered it my self if I had done so. I also disabled ACPI in my bois, which helped as well. I now have a stable installation of Win ME. Might try XP again later, but ME gets the job done.
Thanks for your help grout, tis was greatly appreciated

I recently noticed that I was getting very poor battery life, and a critical '4 minutes left' alert from gnome-power-manager without any prior warning.  To rule out that program being in error, I set the following running and unplugged, replugging when I got the critical alert

The first section, down to 78%, is what I'd expect from this laptop, which only had about 2 hours of battery life when new.  Then the sudden drop, mirrored in the recharge profile.
It this likely to be a problem with the computer, or the sign of an expiring battery?  How can I investigate further?

I think, from some searches for a similar issue, that some old Toshiba Satellites had a BIOS issue with ACPI.
Nope ... BIOSes have workarounds for known bugs of other OSes ... which wreck havoc or simply disable some functionality when using linux. On top of that most acpi code present on BIOSes is compiled with the MS compiler that seems to be more permissive than it should (read doesn't fully comply with the standard) thus wrecking havoc (again) with linux that tries to follow the standards.

  • Lenovo Ideapad s205 ACPI Problem?

I have installed Arch linux in to subject notebook. Wile installing I skip efi support and boot with syslinux (not grub). This is first time I meet motherboard with efi support, so I'm not quite sure I have to reinstall distro. My installation works just fine except wifi and webcam. I switched off helibirnate and sleep timer in kde powermanager but I found wifi works extremly slow after half an hour (or less) inaktivity. Webcam dissapear also. Is there some kine of service that manages powersaving running with systemd or should I boot with full efi support?

I have the same problem with webcam. It works for nearly 20-30 mins after reboot and then /dev/video0 disappears. This appears in /var/log/messages.log during the system boot:

  • 845GLMS ACPI Problem

I just installed Windows XP Pro SP1 on my new pc.  Windows dose not recognize the BIOS ACPI feature, when I shut down the system it will give me the “its now save to turn off your pc” message.  I have checked everything from BIOS to control panel power options settings on windows, used Windows Update and MSI Live Update.  Also noticed on Device manager that my PC it’s displayed as an MPS Uniprocessor PC not ACPI pc, also tried to update hardware (windows hal) with no luck.  This is my config:
    BIOS
    Power Management Setup
    IPCA [Enabled]
    ACPI [S1&S3] (tried them all)
    MSI 845GLMS
    Celeron 1.7
    256MB RAM
    Maxtor 30GB
    Windows XP Pro SP1
    Thanks in advance

Go to control panel, device manager and open up the computer icon for properties. Insert your XP disc and update the uniprocessor PC driver to ACPI PC driver (sometimes need to manually locate) from the XP disc.
    All the Best... :D!!!

I don't know why, but now it works.
    Possible reasons:
previously I installed my system from bootstrap and now from the iso
    Arch updates
Now I use journaling in ext4 previously not (I've installed both time to usb flash)

  • Solaris 8 installation problem on an Intel base PC

I'm quite new with Solaris. I got stuck in Solaris 8 installation just at almost the very beginning. After booting up the system from floppy and conituing pressing F2 and selecting booting from CD, I got an error message like:
    cannot mount on pci@0; 0/pci-ide@7; 1/ide01/sd@0; 0:a
    panic[cpu0]thread=FEC17440 vfs:mountroot
then, the system reboots itself again and again every time it reaches this point. I guess it's a problem with my CD-ROM. But the problem persists even if I change CD-ROM or move CD-ROM from secondary master to primary slave, etc. I also tried to change harddisk, but did no good to the problem. Is there any experienced users who could provide me with some solutions?
I'm using a system with: Pentium 133, 32 MB Ram, 4GB HDD, 3C905TX, ATI Rage II PCI, Matshita CR-587 CD-ROM, Serial mouse and so on. I also tried another system with: P III 450, Asus P3BF, 192MB Ram, Pioneer DVD-ROM, same HDD, and so on. The problem was still there with the latter system. However, I successfully installed Solaris 7 with the latter system before. Why can't it work with Solaris 8?
Thanks a lot for the help.

I've been having the exact same problems on a PowerEdge 500SC. I have managed to get Solaris up and running on the machine, however. I booted the DCA from the floppy disk and installed from the CD-ROM. When the DCA is ready to scan for devices I use the "Specific Scan" option to tell it to look for specific devices. I tell it to scan for all devices in the listing and in doing so the DCA finds ISA-based IDE controllers. After it provides a listing of the devices it found I use the "Device Tasks" option and the "View/Edit Devices" menu item then delete the Bus Mastering IDE controller device. Once the screen comes up to ask for a boot device, the drives will show up as on the ISA controllers.
I have to go through this process every time I boot the machine but I am able to make the system run at least.
I haven't figured out the ACPI problem, yet.

  • Solaris 8 installation problem on Dell PowerEdge 500SC

    Hi,
I am having TWO PROBLEMS installing Solaris 8 on Dell PowerEdge 500SC.
    This hardware spec is:
    Pentium-III at 1GHz
    256MB 133MHz ECC SDRAM
20GB 7200RPM ATA100 EIDE hard drive (on integrated ATA-100 controller)
48X EIDE CD-ROM drive (on integrated ATA-100 controller)
    Motherboard: unknown
    more details: http://www.dell.com/us/en/esg/topics/esg_pedge_sc_towermain_servers_3_pedge_500sc.htm
FIRST PROBLEM is the following message was shown at the hardware probe.
WARNING: ACPI Tables not in Reclaim Memory
Warning: Resource Conflict - both devices are added
    NON-ACPI device: PNP0C01
    Port: C00-C01, C06-C08, C14, C50-C52, C6C-C6F,
    CD6-CD7
    F50-F57
    ACPI device: PNP0C01
    Port 814-85B, 580-58F, C00-CD7, F50-F58
At this time, I was using "Solaris 8 (Intel Platform Edition) 10/01" released version.
I am not sure what this means, but it was RESOLVED with using newer "x86 DCA boot diskette (Patch-ID# 110930-05)".
But, the SECOND REAL PROBLEM is another one. It just happens booting the kernel after the hardware probe. I get the following messages about 2 minutes later, after beginning to load kernel.
    WARNING:/pci@0,0/pci-ide@1/ata@1 (ata1): timeout: abort request, target=0 lun=0
    WARNING:/pci@0,0/pci-ide@1/ata@1 (ata1): timeout: about device, target=0 lun=0
    WARNING:/pci@0,0/pci-ide@1/ata@1 (ata1): timeout: reset target, target=0 lun=0
    WARNING:/pci@0,0/pci-ide@1/ata@1 (ata1): timeout: reset bus, target=0 lun=0
After another 1 or 2 minutes I get more error and the system reboots.
Please give me any suggestion or advice!
    Thanks.

  • ACPI not working

I am running Arch linux on an HP pavilion ze4400. I'm also running windows XP (since it came with it) but in a small partition because my gf needs to use the computer as well. When I'm using XP, the fan is very efficient. It turns on when I'm doing a lot of things, and it turns off when the  computer is not doing anything. I like that since the battery can last longer, and there is no noise at all.
When I previously installed SUSE 9.0, it worked well, but not as well as XP. At least the fan would be a little more efficient in SUSE. It would turn off only when I wouldn't use the computer for a long time with the battery. If it was plugged in, the fan never turned off, but it would at least remain at lower speeds.
Now I'm interested in Arch. I dont need all that KDE crap SUSE likes to use. But i do miss acpi. When I installed Arch, everything went well. When I boot off GRUB, the computer halts. It stops on ACPI *something* IRQ. I can't remember. I have to go into GRUB and type in "acpi=off" and then the computer doesn't halt. But of course, the fan is always on and the computer makes a lot of noise.
What can I do? How can I activate ACPI without having the computer halt? I have ACPI  installed. I really want to give Arch a try.

I'm the only one posting. sorry for all these small posts, but i'm working on this ACPI problem right now. i'm looking for people to help me. so please, if you have a comment or suggestion, post it so that we can find a solution. in the meanwhile, i'm pulling my hairs out!
that said, i tried the lm_sensors but it didn't work. lm_sensors cannot find any sensors on my computer!! does anythng work with this HP!!
    although i found something interstesting:
does anyone know if it will work?

  • I915 and KMS problem

Hi to all, I have bought a new netbook, an acer with intel 3150 graphics. It works well but it has a little glitch. When I boot up the system the kernel shows the usual messages ( I have removed quiet from the kernel boot parameters ) and it starts up kms well. However after the execution of all the hooks in the initramfs the screen goes black and it reactivates just after executing the hal daemon. Then the system loads the window manager and it works great.
However it is annoying to see the screen going black during the boot process. I think it could be an acpi problem. Because the kms works, the xorg starts, after executing hal the screen reactivates and during the first part of the boot process I can see kernel messages and the screen setted to the proper resolution ( 1024x600 ).
I have inserted the i195 and intel_agp modules into the initramfs. If I delete these modules from the initramfs the screen goes black too but it reactivates earlier ( I suppose when the i915 driver gets loaded ).
From the /etc/logs/everything.log I cannot see errors or strange behaviours. I'm using syslinux to boot the system and I have as parameters only i915.modeset=1. I tried the SVIDEO option but it doesn't work.
P.S. I have tried setting the splash boot parameter too, but I cannot see the arch logo on the top of the screen. This is another reason why I think it is an acpi problem.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't used the arch method to build a kernel, but in the old days of redhat and caldera I have built a lot of kernels manually. I have seen the number of options have grown, so it will need a bit of study to configure it good.
Also I have seen another ( real strange ) problem. I'm using encrypted volumes for the system and on the 32 bit kernel ( the netbook ) I can use cryptsetup/device mapper without problems with 2.6.35 kernel, on the 64 bit desktop the 2.6.35 kernel causes troubles to cryptsetup ( it says that cannot mount /dev/sda as read-only or something like this ). I haven't investigated too much ( I'm using the 2.6.33 kernel on the desktop ) but I suspect it could be a configuration problem in the 64 bit kernel package.
