Amount being backed up by Time Machine keeps growing during full backup
After some problems with Time Machine backup, I removed a bunch of stuff from my internal hard drive, reformatted my external HD used for backups, and started a new full backup. Time Machine has been running for about 24 hours and gives me a status of Backing up: xx GB of yy GB. Both xx and yy keep growing (apace) so that I don't believe xx will ever equal yy.
To cryptic? Here are real numbers. My internal disk being backed up contains 469.39 GB. Backup status now says Backing up: 685.78GB of 754.42 GB. Both numbers just keep growing. What's going on here? I'm happy to let Time Machine overnight (again) but, really, this can't be normal.
Start up in Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name), and run Repair Disk (not Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then restart as usual.
If you don't already have a current backup, you must back up your data before you take the above step. You may be able to back up, even if the system isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Directory corruption in a MacOS journaled volume is always the result of a drive malfunction. It's not caused by power failures, system crashes, or anything else. You might choose to tolerate such a malfunction once in the life of a drive. If it's repeated, the drive must be replaced, or there is some other hardware fault that needs to be corrected. Ignoring repeated directory errors will result in data loss.

Home directory is not being backed up in Time Machine
Problem: It turns out my home directory does not have any backups in Time Machine for the last year. I've never received any error message indicating it wasn't doing the full backup.
Goal: I'd like to get Time Machine to back up my home folder (which contains 100% of the content I care about) again, ideally in a way where I can keep my history from the last time it backed up successfully.
How I found out:
- I opened Time Machine and realized all the "pink bars" were dimmed all the way back up to Sept. 2011 when I navigated to my home folder or any folder within it.
- I cloned a file within my home folder, did a manual Time Machine back up, opened Time Machine and verified that the backup volume did not contain the cloned file.
- I did this again while watching the Console and verified that it did not make a large enough backup to include the cloned file.
- I explored all the backups in Finder and realized that indeed all the backups that corresponded to the dimmed pink bars in Time Machine had no home folder.
- I did an "ls -a" in the backup volume in Terminal and realized that it was not the case that the home directory was present but merely hidden.
What I've tried:
- I created a new admin account, logged into that and did a manual Time Machine backup from there. The new account was backed up, while the original home directory still wasn't. This continues to be true in subsequent backups made while logged into the main account.
- I examined the exclusions list in Time Machine preferences. The only items were the backup volume itself and another partition of that external drive I use for other backups, as expected.
- I did a "Full Reset of Time Machine" (http://pondini.org/TM/A4.html), with a reboot before re-enabling Time Machine. The plist file did change to become much simpler, but the home folder is still not being backed up.
Other notes:
- I run Dropbox, and have those contents in a folder one level under the home directory
- I run Git
- The existing backups have only used 500GB or so of a 1TB partition, so it's not filling up.
- I ran Verify Disk in Disk Utility on both my backup volume and the mac's HD. The backup volume appeared OK, but the mac HD was "found corrupt and needs to be repaired". I could boot into the Recovery HD and repair it, but I feel like this is a risk and I'd like to have a working backup before I do that (I don't have another external HD around to make a temporary backup). Could the corrupted drive be the reason Time Machine has been silently skipping the home folder?
- My home folder is named "apple". Might this be a problem? I'd rename it, but that's a risk and I'd like a verified backup before doing that.
- The Time Machine plist file in /Library/Preferences is pretty hard to read in pico, TextEdit, etc (maybe this is normal?)
I've scoured the forums and pondini's very thorough troubleshooting pages to no avail. Please let me know if anyone has ideas. Thanks.Latest update: Bought a new external harddrive, set that up as the new Time Machine volume, but got the exact same results (all but my main user directory are backed up). This is after another Time Machine reset (deleting the .plist), starting up in Safe Mode, and trying to initiate the backup from both the account that doesn't get backed up and another administrator account.
Here is some of the output from the Console when filtering messages for "backupd":
10/5/12 2:51:23.572 AM com.apple.backupd[13529]: Backup content size: 481.57 GB excluded items size: 11.31 GB for volume Macintosh HD
10/5/12 2:51:23.572 AM com.apple.backupd[13529]: Found 1437613 files (470.25 GB) needing backup
10/5/12 2:51:23.573 AM com.apple.backupd[13529]: 564.3 GB required (including padding), 1.5 TB available
10/5/12 2:51:23.581 AM com.apple.backupd[13529]: Waiting for index to be ready (100)
10/5/12 3:40:33.297 AM com.apple.backupd[13529]: Copied 763432 files (21.54 GB) from volume Macintosh HD.
Put the relevant parts in bold. No messages about why it only backed up 21.54GB when it found 470.25GB that needed to get backed up.
Does this make sense to anyone?? -
Notes App note being backed up by Time Machine.
I'm having issues with the new Notes application in Mountain Lion not being backed up by Time Machine. If it is being backed up then the new OS is keeping me from accessing the time stamps or backups. Normally I could just open up an application and enter into the time machine to find the stored local time stamps but the Notes screen minimizes and the finder window opens automatically keeping me from accessing stored backup of the new Notes app. Is anyone having this same issue?
Thanks a million for your assistance.
I did disconnect first the Mac from Internet and restored the contents of ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes directory. It worked like a charm as I could see again all my previous notes listed in the main window of Notes app.
The hiccup is that it only lists Icloud folders and I can't seem to find a way to create 'On My Mac' folders so that I can copy them to a local folder. The moment I turn internet on, there are automatically deleted as you rightly suspected. If I only wanted to restore them and have them on Icloud that would be just fine. In my case, I want them away from Icloud and only stored locally hence the initial decision to untick the sync with Icloud which triggered the whole havoc...we are getting close though... -
Once I upgraded to ML, I'm now finding that my Seagate Free Agent external hard drive is no longer being backed up by Time machine. Do I have to wait for Seagate to update their drivers for this hard drive?
I tried your suggestion, and it's been giving me the message "Preparing for Backup" for the past 8 hours. Does this mean TM is backing up my hard drive? I'll give it a few more hours, but if nothing else happens, I'm not sure what else to do. I'm not sure if there are any new external hard drives that are compatible with ML yet.

I'm not sure if my iPhoto library is being backed up by Time Machine. I am backing up to a LaCie external hard drive. I can open photos ont the hard drive that are in folders but not those that are in iPhoto.
Do a restore from Time Machine. That will tell you.

Time machine keeps growing in size or backing up a size far greater than it
Apologies if this is covered elsewhere but after hours of searching I still haven't been able to find a resolution which is actually fixing my problem.
When my time machine tries to back up the size of the back up just keeps growing and growing - a problem which has been reported several times but none of the solutions are fixing the problem for me. I've completely reset time machine (disconnect external hard drive, deleting the preferences from ~library/preference, then reset up with my exclusions) and the problem just reappeared.
I've gone through this routine several times and in most cases had no joy. On one occasion I thought the problem had been resolved as it did the initial backup and then a couple of hourly backs and then suddenly it returned a message saying it had insufficient space (trying to back up 470GB but disk only has 300GB available) which was just ridiculous as the full back up size was under 50GB.
I've verified the disk on several occasions and it always comes up clean. In a fit of desperation I've even tried reformatting the external drive with no improvements
I'm at the point of deleting time machine from my laptop and going back to the old Backup program. Can anyone offer any thing else I could try.Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Have you Verified your internal HD (and Repaired any externals that are also being backed-up)?
If so, it's probably something damaged or corrupted in your installation of OSX. I'd suggest downloading and installing the 10.6.4 "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Snow Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
If that doesn't help, reinstall OSX from your Snow Leopard Install disc (that won't affect anything else), then apply the "combo" again. -
External drive not being backed up by Time Machine
I have 2 external HDDs, both USB 2. I'm using 1 for backups using time machine and one for my photos and music. Time Machine appears to backing up my internal drive but is not backing up the external data drive. The external data drive does not appear in the excluded files box in Time Machine setup but it is not being backed up. What am I doing wrong?
newbie Vanc wrote:
What I've done now id exclude it from the backup and tried to include it again and the minus sign does not come up when I select the data drive.
The data drive is a fat 32 drive. Will that make a difference?
It will indeed.
TM only backs-up HFS+ partitions (any variant of Mac OS Extended). This is because TM uses the hidden +File System Event Database+ that OSX puts on such drives, tracking all the changes to the data on the disk.
Your only recourse to back it up with TM is to find a place to copy that partition or drive temporarily, then erase and reformat it. See item 5 or 6 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum for instructions.
Otherwise, you'll have to use a different app. I think that either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! may be able to do that. Check them out via Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com. -
Formatting a drive after being backed up by Time Machine
I just bought a Time Capsule and am cleaning up the drives on my system. My question is: after backing up a drive to Time Machine within the Time Capsule, can I reformat that drive and rename it in order to give it a fresh start, and still have its file history available to me in Time Machine? Or, will I lose the ability to restore the files formerly contained on that drive?
Welcome to the discussions!
+after backing up a drive to Time Machine within the Time Capsule, can I reformat that drive and rename it in order to give it a fresh start, and still have its file history available to me in Time Machine?+
I'm a bit confused here. It is not possible to "reformat" the Time Capsule drive unless you physically remove it from the Time Capsule and place it in a separate enclosure, (which will void the warranty). Even if you wanted to do this, any type of reformat will completely erase the drive and all of its contents.
If by "reformat" you simply mean "erase", that can be done using AirPort Utility. But again, all data will be wiped on the disk if you do this.
If you simply want to rename your Time Capsule and keep the existing files on the disk, that can be done using AirPort Utility. Post back if you need instructions on this. -
Time Machine keeps failing during a full system restore.
I have an iMac from 2009 for some reason my HDD's got corrupted so my Mac wasnt able to boot from the HDD, though it was being recognized. I read online the way to fix this was to reformat the HDD so I did that using the Disk Utility under the recovery disc.
Made sense to me, until I started to try to use Time Machine and restore my backed up files. I'm using the snow leopard recovery disk and choosing restore under the utilities. My external HDD comes up fine. I select the date of my last backup and the destination of where I want to download it. The restore then starts. The restore gets to around 30% (aka the point that the OS finishes installing) and says it's completed installing the OS and would like to restart, problem is I'd like it to finish the backup completely not just the OS. When it trys to restart the screen goes grey and the whole thing fails. I'm trying it again now and will have a log of what went wrong soon. After it fails I actually have a working Mac, I can log into it and all our User Accounts are there but once we log in it's missing so many applications and everything else. Worst case scenario I'll just reinstall everything using time machine actually in the OS, but I'd like to just do a full restore. Time Machine keeps crashing on "Local Backups"
Recently I updated to Lion. Right from the start I had some problems with time machine (together with time capsule).
However, with the help of some information on the different community platforms I got things sorted out.
(Deleting and rebuilding the time capsule spotlight index did the trick.)
- Just not sure whether this information is relevant, so I thought, I better share it.
This said I am now having more problems with time machine:
I try to use the local backup feature (macbook pro with Lion).
The problem occurs, if no time capsule is attached. (at least I never had it when it was attached.)
When I enter time machine, I see the violet bars for time capsule (external) backups and white ones for the
local backups. (Actually, I am seeing one, because currrently there seems to be below 20% free disk space, so
older local backups are removed.).
If I select that old backup (which is typically only a few minutes old) in the star wars view, I typically get a
picture of the transition, then everything stops and after a few seconds wait time machine crashes completely.
(Meaning I am back at my usual desktop.)
This does not happen always, but rather like 80% of the time.
I looked around many community boards, but did not find anything so far. I already tried the whole spectrum of
ideas like switching off and on of time machine, rebooting, etc.
Below is the corresponding Console-log for this happening.
Does anyone has any idea? It looks like an outright finder crash.

Time Machine is making a full backup into another directory
Hi, ive been using Time Machine for a month then im stopped using it cause a travel outside the country. When im come back (4 days ago) I try to backup again and i see that is backing up the entire machine again... Looked in the Finder under backupdb folder and it has now 2 directorys one with the full backup since june and another with no backups because ive canceled the backup.
Anyone knows how to fix it?
Thanks.Patrick Lafferty wrote:
Today though in proceeding with a new backup, it, (like with your experience), created a new directory with a whole backup of the entire machine....I see two directories now on the TM volume. Is there a way to combine the two directories?
No. TM keeps the backups for each Mac completely separate, using each Mac's unique Ethernet Address, contained in the hardware. The main purpose of this to allow you to back up 2 or more Macs to the same drive without conflicts.
There is no way to combine them.
My 1TB backup HDD just had a huge chunk taken out of it with this backup of what would seem to be redundant data.
Yes, most of it is. But the old Mac's version of OSX is somewhat different from your new one: not only is much of the hardware different, so are the processors.
Worse, the old backups are now "stranded:" since they're for a different Mac, TM on the new Mac won't delete the old ones when it needs to make room for new backups. Instead, it will delete the oldest backups from the new Mac.
So your best bet would be to simply erase the TM drive with Disk Utility, and let TM start fresh with your new Mac.
As an alternative, you can selectively delete the old backups via Time Machine (do not use the Finder). This is one-by-one, so rather tedious and time-consuming.
Since they're from a different Mac, you can view them via the instructions in item 17 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum, and use the procedure in item 12 to delete individual backups. -
How do you get Time Machine to do a Full Backup?
I want to download Lion OS and I will call Apple for help, but I know they will ask if I've backed up everything. I'd like for Time Machine to completely back up my hard drive but I can't seem to find out how to make it do that. There must be an easy way. Any ideas? Thanks.
I know this is more information than you need but it is a fairly complete compilation of facts:

Why does my new external drive used by time machine keep starting when no backup is being done
Got a new 2 TB Seagate GoFlex for Mac and run it over WireFire 800 because the old Western Digital was having a hard time starting up which held up the boot. I have a 2.8 Ghz Core 2 Duo desktop with 3 GB of RAM. Running OS X 10.6.8.
Seems like the every 10 minutes or so, I hear the external drive start up even when no backup is scheduled. I spend most of my time in a Win XP Parallels virtual machine.
What's up?Why would you say that? The drive has passed several Seagate verifys. It does not exhibit any issues. It is doing backups and I copied my 39 GB virtual machine to it with no issues.
Seems to me a drive does not just start up by itself, no? -
Trouble Backing Up with Time Machine
I have a 2007 iMac, 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 500GB. Last week my hard drive died so I had to have it replaced. Luckily I use Time Machine with a 1TB external, partitioned so that the iMac backs up to a 500GB section, so the technicians were able to do a complete restore. However, upon returning home and trying to resume backing up, the backups have been failing, saying that there is not enough room on the external partition. I just erased the last backup and have no other backups on there now, so it's basically empty, but I still keep getting the message that it needs over 500GB (about 520 GB) to complete the backup. The iMac currently has 470 GB used. I've run "Verify Disk" for the external in Disk Utility, and excluded everything reasonable o try to reduce the amount being backed up, and I still keep getting the message that more space is needed. Ideas? FYI: I don't want to erase and reformat the external because the other partition has my music files.
When googling "time machine error 11" you'll be getting a lot of stories... and only few solutions. This one might work for you, too.
