Amount of RAM useful limited to processor speed?

I have heard that at a certain point the amount of RAM you throw in your computer won't help past a certain processor speed. If this is true, is there a chart out there that will show these limits?
Or if anyone has any opinions as far as a:
Dual 2.7Ghz (G5)
Dual 1.8Ghz (G5)
Dual 800Mhz (G4)
all PowerPC
thanks,
T

Without a list of applications, you could be starving your apps, especially if they need to be open and active. If you work on large photoshop files and not smallish, it is impossible almost to have too much (and you would need a PCIe G5 to get 10-12GB RAM).
Check page-out; number of swap files; whether you are generating swap files.
just scanning and retouching can eat up 2GB RAM.
OS X uses free memory to cache windows, disk I/O, and those won't show up looking at Activity Monitor.
Virtual memory can be 'requested' or 'allocated' but not used, too.
I saw people with 512-768MB be shocked at what a difference even light use (email, web, writing, etc) it was to upgrade their G5 to 1.5GB RAM. There are also programming changes that go into a G5 that are totally different from G4s.
But it has nothing to do with cpu, front side bus.
And no matter what, a nice fast 10K Raptor boot drive always helps

  • Extra 256MB of RAM or 133mhz more processor speed?

Hello all, I am currently watchin an Ebay auction for a 667 mhz DA processor (i can just pop that in my DA and it would work right?) I am debating wether or not to buy the faster processor or a 512mb stick to replace one of my 256. What do you all feel would give me better performance? Processor or RAM?

Whats a good price for a used 667MHz CPU?
What can you find RAM for? 512MBs of PC133 seems to be about $70 bux US... (anyone have a cheaper RAM source?).
MacWorld (March 2006) has an article about the benefits of adding RAM. It was suggested that you could gauge the need for more memory by lauching "Activity Monitor" and checking the System Memory" activity under normal use conditions... if the amount of "Free" memory is less then 10% under normal use loads more RAM is called for. The article suggests that more Memory won't speed up the actual "number crunching" done by the CPU (it will still operate at the same clock cycle) but seek time for the numbers is reduced as frequently used code is in "fast memory" (as opposed to being on a hardrrive which is slower). More RAM means more fast memory. This is a good thing as it will improve the speed of app switching and general system performance. If CPU intensive work is to be done you might want the new CPU though...
Get both (but check the price of new CPUs from Fastmac, macsales (OWC), Giga and Sonnet.

  • KDE vs Gnome vs XFCE (amount of ram used.)

    I run the command:
    coda ~ $ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 2010 1341 669 0 78 890
    -/+ buffers/cache: 373 1637
    Swap: 1474 0 1474
So I'm using a total of 373 megs of ram on KDE.
I have an old laptop, and I want to know if I have enough ram to run gnome without excessively using swap.
And if not, I'll just use XFCE.
How much RAM (on average) does Gnome and XFCE use?

I don't think you'll find any with meaningful figures, and the figures here aren't all that useful either. I mean, even comparing memory usage between two different users with the exact same programs running and the very same hardware will give you very different results unless it's measured directly after a cold boot (and the numbers you'll get then is meaningless anyway), seeing as usage patterns will have a major effect on how much memory any application will use.
    Agreed.
What is also not being taken into account here is kernel modules loaded.
Unloading unused modules may reduce significantly, the amount of used memory (i.e. free up memory)
Note the +/-buffers line presents the (used and) free mem available to applications.

  • Reducing Processor speed for Power problems

I have already replaced the power supply in my G5 20"iMac under Apples self-install program. That problem was resolved (no power), but now the computer has been unexpectedly shutting off and has frequent high fan noise . I reduced the processor speed and it has been usable. I plan to take it to an Apple Store because my 1yr. waranty is almost up, however, my serial # falls in the Repair Extension program for Video and Power issues.
I am hoping they will diagnose on the spot and order a new logic board or whatever. I do not want to leave the computer at the store while a part is ordered as it is usable.
Does anyone know what I can expect at the Store?
And, in general, can anyone tell me what happens when the computer is used with reduced Processor speed.I have not really noticed a difference, but I think I am just masking the problem.
    Thank you

    Hi
If you do decide to go with a processor upgrade, they're available from a number of manufacturers including Giga Designs, Sonnet, OWC/PowerLogix/NewerTech and FastMac:
    http://www.gigadesigns.com/
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/cpu_upgrades.html
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/accelerators/
    http://fastmac.com/
Most of the above web sites have more detailed information about their processor upgrades and downloadable installation manuals and/or videos, so you can check compatibility and what's involved in replacing the processor.
Here in the UK the Sonnet upgrades seem the most readily available and are available from the following stockists amongst others:
    http://www.macheaven.co.uk/
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/
I've also ordered from OWC in the States before without any problems. With the good exchange rate you may save some money, although be aware I've always ended up paying some form of import tax, so the savings aren't as great as you may expect.
If it were me I'd consider a 7455 based OWC Mercury Extreme upgrade:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/accelerators/OWC-Mercury-Extreme/
They seem to be highly recommended, compatible with OS 9.2 and OS X and don't require any third party firmware patches or kernel extensions etc. If you click the More Info button for the 1.467-1.5GHz upgrade, you'll see some benchmarks comparing it to the stock 400MHz processor.
Another option would be to look for an original Apple dual 450MHz or 500MHz processor card on eBay that's been pulled from a Gigabit Ethernet model. Assuming your computer's compatible with dual processors (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/13551), it would offer a modest speed boost.
    I hope this helps.

  • Is There a Maximum Amount of RAM Loaded Per Core on the Processors

I hope I'm asking this question in the correct group.
We use AutoCAD Civil 3D which only uses one core of a multicore processor.
We seemed to have reached an impasse with AutoCAD and Windows with RAM usage.  It appears that Windows will only load a maximum of 15.8GB RAM into the first core of a Intel Xenon or Intel I7 processor.
We have a rather large drawing that is roughly 48GB in size.  This drawing opens on all the tested systems in about 33 minutes on a xenon system with 16 GB RAM, xenon system with 32GB RAM, I7 system with 32GB RAM and an overclocked I7 system
with 64GB RAM. The OS is Windows 7 64 bit and Windows 8.1 Pro.
Watching the resources on all the machines during the drawing opening the network throughput varies from 100Gbps to 500Gbps and when the first core reaches a maximum of 15.8GB RAM the throughput drops to around 72Kbps!  These results are almost identical
on 4 different setups with RAM ranging from 16GB-64GB.
The 16GB system pulls all available RAM, 32GB and 64GB systems would only pull at the most 15.8GB to the first core.
Is this 16GB core limitation a Windows issue or an AutoCAD issue?  AutoCAD is telling us we may have reached the core limit in windows.
    Regards.

    Hi,
As I know, there are 3 factors that limit the highest RAM amount your computer is able to see: 32 bit or 64 bit CPU, RAM limit of OS and RAM limit of motherboard. for CPU, 32 bit CPU can only has a limited 4 GB RAM, while 64 bit windows can has more RAM,
depends on the Windwos Version (you should also exclude some RAM used by audio\video\network memory). and motherboard manufacturer is the important one who decides the maximum RAM amount that can be supported, the only sure way to know is to consult your motherboard
manual\view the manufacture website\contact the manufacture.

You can update directly to Yosemite (for free) through the App Store (this is 10.10). Make sure your existing applications will run on this OS.
If you wish to stay at 10.8, you can order this through the online Apple Store (it's $20), and they will email you a redemption code to be used on the App Store.

  • Optimizing Processor Speed - Using Flash 8 Video Encoder

I'm using the Flash 8 Video Encoder to convert .mov files to flv files. On my station I have the following:
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 12 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B08
    SMC Version: 1.7f10
I've got 151 GB available on my system drive.
Presently, it is taking me approximately 2 hours 45 minutes to convert a 6 minute 26 sec mov to a flv with custom settings of:
    Max Date Rate: 300 kbps
    Frame Rate: Same as Source
Audio Data Rate: 48 kbps (mono)
    500 x 333 pixels.
HOWEVER, on an associate's computer he is able to convert under the same specs, same files, etc. in 1 hour 40 minutes.
    His computer specs are:
    Power Mac G5
    Processor Speed - 2.3 GHz
    2-CPU's
    L2 Cache - 1 mb per CPU
    Memory - 16 GB
    Bus Speed 1.15 GHz
My computer has much more powerful processor, so we're confused why it's taking longer on my computer.
I also have a second internal drive but presently the programs and source file are on my system HD. Someone suggested that I should try to make sure that the Video Encoder has max RAM allocated to it as well as having the scratch disk and cache set to the second internal drive. I don't know how to do this or even if it's possible but looking for advice and suggestions on how to better optimize the Video Encoder and would appreciate any help with this ASAP.
    Thanks!

  • Processor speed and RAM for Aperture? Comparing MacBook Pros.

I'm about to purchase a macbook pro and thought it best to ask people who are actually using aperture and other image editing software this question. I need to know if a boost in processor speed and video card from the 2.16 to the 2.33 MBP is noticable enough to make a difference. I'm just getting into RAW editing and my iBook can't handle aperture because of the video card, and I don't want to have any problems in the future. Is the price worth the difference?
I've tried posting in other places and have had little response, so I would appreciate it a lot considering I need to purchase today or tomorrow!

All in all, I'd recommend the 2.33 for Aperture. You'll likely keep this laptop for a 2-3 years, so what do the extra dollars give you?
The modest speed bump between 2.16 and 2.33 is OK ... Aperture will use it, esp. since there are 2 x procs. It's really 2 x 10% uplifts, theoretical. You will feel around a 5-10% improvement I suspect.
The bigger reason is the video card VRAM .... 256Mb v 128Mb. VRAM WILL BE USED BY APERTURE and cannot be upgraded later. You soon notice when your RAW's or scanned images are paged from VRAM to main memory and back. Aperture moves the image into VRAM for processing image data using the GPU. More is a good, good thing..... esp. if you ever hang a 2nd monitor off your laptop (which is very common practice).
The additional 1Gb RAM is also needed. Aperture runs like a dog with 8Mpixel plus RAW's on 1Gb RAM and really starts to cruise on 2Gb.
So, you'd need the extra Gb RAM anyway, $175 add-on. That leaves a net of $325, or less than $10/month over the life of your laptop.
All in all then, I'd recommend the 2.33 v 2.16 for Aperture.
    G.

  • Processor Speed vs. Cache vs. RAM?

    Greetings,
I am deciding between 2 laptops to purchase and I just wanted to get any suggestions as to which would be better.
    1) A REFURBISHED laptop with 2.6GHz (dual core), 1 mb L2, 6gb ram.    Pros: 640gb hd, 3 usb 3.0 ports.  Con: 1mb cache?
    2) A new laptop with 2.2GHz, 3 mb L3, 6gb ram.   Cons: only 500gb hd, 2 usb 3.0 ports
Both are the same price and size.
If it's not a big difference or it's too hard to tell, maybe any suggestions as to what to look for in a laptop as far as processor speed/cache.
I do small video projects so it wouldn't hurt to have the more efficient one if cache or speed is more important for that.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I got to thinking later- you must be considering buying RAM from Apple, or you think that what Apple sells RAM for is what it actually costs.
You can get RAM as you go for nothin'. For instance, the RAM I use is PC3200, and I found it today at Circuit City for $45 a GB. What you use is actually cheaper than mine, despite it being newer. More popular, I suppose.
Look it up- -it's always on sale, somewhere. But +do no+t use high-density RAM found on ebay. Make sure you have low-density RAM. If you buy it from a store, it will be what you need, though. Almost certainly.
So get the 8 core, and RAM as you go. Merry Christmas!

If it opens in safe mode, you may have a problematic add-on. Try the procedure in the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article.

That's a kernel panic and indicates some sort of problem either with the computer's hardware or software. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. It would help to post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Meanwhile, try booting the computers into Safe Mode then restarting normally. If this is simply a disk repair or cache file problem then this may fix it.
You can also try creating a new admin account on each computer then booting into the new account. This would help determine if the problem is related to a bad file in the user accounts.

  • 32gig Memory on Macpro 8 Core - How to use it all the memory and processor speed

    Hello Everyone,
I was wondering if any of you out there know a way to have my Mac Pro use more of the memory it has. I have 32gig of memory and I would like to have it use more processor power and memory if possible. I am aware you can use the "renice -10 -p PIDNUMBER"
How can I make it use more of the processors and memory my machine has. Ex. Running Photoshop or Final Cut, Imovie etc.

Using the Unix nice command raises the priority of a process, but software will use the amount of memory it needs.  You cannot make a program use memory it does not need.  Same with processor cores, if software is written to use only one processor or core you cannot make it use more, the software has to be designed for multi-threading to do that.

  • Whats the maximum amount of RAM can I get/use for my iMac?

    I own the
iMac (Anodized Aluminum) 1st Generation - Summer 2007
Anodized Aluminum Summer 2007, 20-inch with 2.0+ Processor
and I was wondering what THE MAX AMOUNT of RAM I can install into it is?

It can take 6GB of RAM; click here for installation instructions, and pick a vendor which advertises compatibility with your iMac model.
