Amperage with Tiger vs Leopard?

Does anyone know what a reasonable Amperage was in Tiger for a 15" G4 Aluminum 1.67 GHz (all you're doing is looking at this forum with Airport turned on, but no music etc)? You can find the number by going to About this Mac -> More Info -> Power -> Then under battery information there will be a negative number next to Amperage (mAh):
I have a brand new battery and it's not lasting as long as my old one did in Tiger (I recently put Leopard on) so I'm wondering if Leopard needs more power.

Thank you very much! I was getting worried about my new battery, but it looks like it is indeed Leopard rather than my battery. With Leopard using Safari was requiring -1800 to -2212 mAh (-2200 was looking at an embedded video with earbuds) so if my laptop used to draw around -1500 that would explain the missing hour of battery life.
I poked around and found that Leopard had turned on Bluetooth all the time (which I don't use and was always off in Tiger). I turned that off and it has made a huge difference.

I have an iPad and iPhone but am stuck with Tiger and Leopard on my old powerbook G4.  Will I still be able to get my email on my PowerBook after I upgrade to iCloud?  I don't have the cash to upgrade the mac right now.  Just wondering what my email options are.  Thank You.

You will be able to get your mail on the PowerBook. The calendars (iCal) will not sync; any events added to iPad and/or iPhone will not sync with the Mac but will sync with each other (that is: the mobile devices which are on iCloud). My  MacBook Pro (Lion) and iPad2 (iOS5) sync fine; I still get my Mail on iBook G4, MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) and iMac (Snow Leopard).

  • Interface help needed (Edirol FA-66) - works with Tiger, not Leopard

I have an Edirol FA66 that works fine on my Macbook running Tiger, but doesn't show up as a device on my iMac running Leopard. Can anyone help please? Thanks....

I used Edirol FA-66 interface successfully with my Intel iMac using Tiger & Logic, iTunes etc for a year, and it worked great. I upgraded from 10.4.4 to 10.4.11 when the system wouldn't recognize M-Audio Radium keyboard. After the upgrade keyboard is on board but now FA-66 doesn't work at all, crackles, static, no sound or device recognition. Must be some glitch in 10.4.11..? Downgraded and the keyboard is gone. Upgraded and the interface is gone. Crazy!
If I buy Leopard, will it resolve both?? I don't want to get Leopard and weigh down my system with all the stuff that goes with it and have the Edirol stuck in the same situation. Is there anyone out there who has experienced this and can recommend a particular version of Leopard?
    Thank you

  • New Imac with Tiger want Leopard and ILife without waiting

I just got a new IMac for Christmas but it has Tiger on the hard drive and in the box. (Last time I buy hardware from Amazon). I do have a full Leopard install disc I used on my Laptop. Can I use this while I wait for my free Leopard upgrade to come or is this breaking the user agreement? Secondly if I do a clean install when I get Leopard how do I get ILife back onto the IMac without buying it again?(since it came pre- installed)?

  • ICal with Tiger and Leopard

    Hi,
I have a PowerMac G5 running Tiger 10.4.11 and a powerbook pro laptop that runs Leopard. I cannot seem to have iCal work on Tiger: it keeps crashing after a few seconds, after sync starts asking to review conflicts. On the laptop with Leopard, there is no problem. Do you know if this problem can be resolved?
I tried to remove the Library/Application Support/SyncServices directory and redo the syncing but it does not work.
    Thanks for any help,
    marc

I have a problem that may give you the answer, though if it's correct it's not an answer you would like. I don't have iCal on my machine. I reinstalled the OS a few months back and I guess it didn't go with it. There was an installer in library/receipts in a package form, but the installation wouldn't go through. By the way, I'm running 10.4.11. Anyway, I went to Apple's download site and found that the only iCal they had on the site was for 10.3.9 at the latest. There was nothing past that to download. I'm thinking perhaps if you don't have the same iCal you did when you bought Tiger/your new computer, you're running a version that's not supposed to be on that version. Now I just have to find a copy of the program for Tiger. If not on Apple's site (and I tried versiontracker), then I don't really know where. That's really all I can think of.

  • After Tiger to Leopard conversion shared user folders stopped working

    Hi,
Today i updated our mailserver to leopard. This server is also the OD master. Directly updated to 10.5.1 to have the latest bugfixes. Most things seem to work ok, but somehow our shared folders are not visible anymore. Checked the rights on them with cyradm and those are still good. When opening the account in thunderbird i can see the boxes but i cannot select them (can chose to subscribe / unsubscribe though). Has anybody else experienced this or know the answer to this problem?
    Best regards,
    Eelco

since i am testing leopard server with tiger and leopard clients i just noticed this problem seems somehow related to mail 3.1 accessing IMAP ACLs differently to mail 2.x, as tiger client to leopard server works fine in picking up shared imap folders.
result: atm assigning ACLs individually seems to be the only way to share imap folders... ;0(
any ideas on how to make group ACLs work again would be highly appreciated.

  • IBook died. Panthr. Can to save/transfr  info to another Mac? with Tiger?

Let's say a person for some reason didn't have a back up.
And then his iBook G4 stopped working and was advised not worth fixing cuz could buy a better, upgraded, but used Mac computer.
Can his info, all his docs and bookmarks and favorites, etc., everything, still be transfered from broke iBook to another Mac (a better mac, tho used.)?
Just take out the hard disc with all the info and somehow transfer that to a better mac?
And could he do that even tho his old Mac was Panther, and if a replacement mac had Tiger or Leopard on it? Would that work? Or would he have to remove Tiger or Leopard from the newer Mac and replace it with Panther to accept transfer of his older contents. And then assume he would have to go through normal upgrade procedures from Panther.
    Oh, he's so confused.
But so thankful for your help.

Some of the answers depends upon the "better mac". The other big question is why did the other computer die? Was it the drive that failed, in which case there is no point?
To keep it simple, in all likelihood you couldn't just swap the drives and expect it to boot another computer unless the new one happened to be identical to the first. What would be easy would be to put that drive into an external enclosure, or get one of those adapter things that don't need an enclosure, and copy off all your files, or just turn it into an external drive for backup, etc. Since this drive is coming from a laptop I don't think it will fit in a desktop without an adapter, and laptops don't have room for two drives (I don't think, never having owned one myself). You can have two drives attached to a computer, or even in a computer. The format of your old drive is compatible with Tiger and Leopard for the purposes of reading files, but as I said before I wouldn't try to boot from it, especially not if the new computer is a new Intel machine.
If it were me, I would get an external firewire enclosure, and put the drive in it. I would then attach it to my new computer and copy off my data files. I would then wipe the old drive and use it for backup or data storage. Some of this will also depend upon the size of the old drive. If it is a 20GB drive it is hardly worth the trouble of continuing to use it and the expense of an enclosure and I would just find (maybe borrow) a suitable enclosure for long enough to copy off data files.

  • Need to Upgrade current Mac OS 10.3.9 - Tiger or Leopard

I am looking for advice - Need to update Mac OS x. Should I go with Tiger or Leopard? I have read several negative issues about Leopard not being ready for 'prime time'. Want to have a seamless upgrade with minimum downtime. Plus, read that Leopard doesnt have I-Photo and I-DVD so have to purchase I-Life-

The retail version of OS X Tiger and Leopard do not include iLife. It is bundled with the restore disks when you buy a new Mac. If you have an older version of iLife you can install it on Leopard or Tiger by inserting the restore disk and click 'install bundled software'. You may want to buy iLIfe '08 for maximum compatibility and new features. (I'm guessing your version if iLife is quite old).
I'd personally recommend Leopard as it's the latest and greatest, although you should upgrade your RAM as 512mb is the bare minimum.
I also recommend you use the 'erase+install' option as people generally don't have many issues installing OS X this way. (Compared to an upgrade install for example).

  • Should I upgrade to tiger or leopard?

I am currently running 10.3.9 on my G5. I have no issues with the system, other than the ipod I just bought requires 10.4.8 or higher. I need to upgrade, so do I go with tiger or leopard? I know it's my decision, but I would like input from other more experienced mac users. I don't want to end up with a lot of problems with my computer; I don't know much about fixing them. I mostly use my computer for music, pictures, and the internet. Is it in my best interest to just upgrade to tiger to avoid as many problems as possible, or should I buy leopard since the two cost the same? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

There are already a lot of legal, retail Tiger DVDs on eBay and Craigslist, at dramatically reduced prices. Since these are fully legal copies, that would be an easy way to upgrade to Tiger 10.4.10 for $50 or so....

  • Should I upgrade from Panther to Tiger or Leopard?

Many are considering upgrading their existing Mac to 10.4 (Tiger) or Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) because of iPhone or iPod compatibility, or other software compatibility. This makes sense, but you have to realize there are both pluses or downsides to doing this.
If you have an application that is only Tiger or Leopard compatible, it makes sense to upgrade.
Unless you are able to completely migrate away from Classic, it doesn't make sense to upgrade to Leopard. Leopard no longer offers Classic support. Though a Firewire external hard drive with Tiger on it on a PowerPC Mac, or on a separate partition (which requires erasing your hard drive), will allow you to maintain Classic. Booting into Mac OS 9 if it was possible with Panther, is still possible with Tiger and Leopard on the same machine. Erase and installing Tiger or Leopard will not preserve the Mac OS 9 system folder needed to use Classic. That will either have to come from your backup, or your original Mac OS 9 installer discs which installed 9 on your Mac. Mid 2002 through late 2005 Macs used a restore utility to restore Mac OS 9 system folders from those original discs. Macs which shipped with 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 can't use the 9.2.1 retail disc to install Mac OS 9, and must use the disc that came with them to install 9 or Classic.
Upgrading to 10.4 and 10.5 introduces a new find file system called Spotlight.
It is much weaker than 10.3.9 for locating files quickly by name. Though if you find files mainly by content, then it is better to have Spotlight. See this thread on how difficult it is to work with Spotlight based systems. Launchbar offers limited Spotlight like features without losing the 10.3.9 and earlier Find File systems on 10.3.9 and earlier.
If Dashboard Widgets are your reason to install 10.4 or 10.5, consider the third party utility Amnesty

  • Upgrading - Tiger or Leopard?

I need to upgrade my DVI TiBook, as it's going to be my primary machine for a while. I'm going to be upgrading the HDD to a 120Gb model, and (eventually) maxing out the RAM to 1Gb (2x 512 chips). My first step is going to be getting the RAM up to 768Mb.
I'm also planning on upgrading the OS from my current 10.3.9 installation. My question is, should I bother with Leopard, or just upgrade to Tiger? I've been hearing talk of AirPort problems with Leopard on the Powerbook G4s, and that it will eat up a lot of my gig of ram. On the other hand, buying retail copies of Tiger is becoming more difficult and more expensive as the days progress. However, it feels like I can't just stick with 10.3, since each day it seems like it can do less and less.
    Thanks for your advice.

Hi, Hank. Tiger will be a better fit on your machine than Leopard, all other things being equal — and particularly if you'll be using it for a while with only 768MB of RAM in it. Tiger will run nicely with that much RAM; Leopard would like more elbow room, though it will run. You're right, though, that Tiger discs are getting hard to find and very expensive. If I were you, I'd make a diligent effort to turn up a retail (not model-specific) Tiger installer, new or used. If you don't find one for a reasonable price after as much time and energy as you're willing to put in, buy Leopard instead — but boost your RAM all the way to 1GB right away.
Be aware, also, that Leopard doesn't support Classic mode. If you still use any Classic applications at all, you won't be able to do so in Leopard, but will have to start up the machine in OS 9 (preferably from an external FireWire hard drive) to run those applications.
I have the same Tibook model you have. It served me faithfully many hours every day for almost exactly five years, and I wore much of the paint off it. I was in the same quandary as yourself, continuing to run 10.3.9 as it grew longer in the tooth, trying to choose between Tiger and Leopard for most of the past year. Finally I just opted for a new MacBook Pro instead — but I kept the Tibook to run a couple of indispensable and non-upgradeable Classic apps.
With Tiger or Leopard on it, your Tibook may serve you well for another couple of years. By then it won't have any resale value (it has little enough now), and when you retire it, you can just pull the hard drive out and keep it for use in an external enclosure with your next Mac. The $200-$300 you're planning to put into it is a small price to pay for a couple of years of extended utility.

  • Can I use migration assistant from a mac with leopard to a mac with tiger?

My old mac was upgraded to leopard, (don't ask me why), and I just got a new mac with tiger, although I ordered leopard up to date. Can I use migration assistant to move stuff from the old mac with leopard to the new mac with tiger, or do I have to wait until I get the copy of leopard? Plus, if I move files over now- like through email and/or network connection, and then when I get leopard and archive and install, what happens to my files?

That is correct. You'll need either an ethernet cable or a firwire cable and a firewire to thunderbolt adapter to connect the two macs together. Here's info on Migration/Setup assistant

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.
