An advice for an used Power Mac G5 dual core 2.3

Hello.
I used a Power Mac G5 PCI-X (sett. 2003) 2.0 GHz, working with Photoshop. It worked great for yeras, but now, due to its typical logic board lack, it got broken and is unable to boot anymore (three times flashing power light).
Now, I use software for PowerPC CPUs, so I can't get new computers, because I should replace all the software too!
I'm going to buy an used Power Mac G5 dual core 2.3 GHz:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermacg5/stats/powermac_g5_dual2.3.html
This is the configuration:
Ram: 5.5 GB
HD: 250 GB
SVGA: GeForce 6600 - 256 MB.
About 650 dollars.
According to you, is this a good product? do you know any issue or manufacturing fault?
Would you buy it if you were me?
Thank you!

I tried heating it (not with the hair dryer), after about 1 hour it booted and worked very well, as in past. But when I powered it off, it started again with the same problem: unable to boot and three times flashing light.
I need a working system.
Furthermore, I removed the hard disk (sata 160 GB), and installed it in a Mac Pro: but it recognized only the second partition (data). So I run the Disk Utility and gave immediately an error (wrote in red and big), writing that the hard disk had a serious physical problem, and that if the computer was able to see the disk, I had to make immediately a backup.
But the three-times flashing light error of the G5 was not given due to the hard disk, because I tried several times to boot it from the OSX DVD, also removing the hard disk, and it always gave the same problem.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual Core freezing

    Hi,
Everything works fine with my G5 with 4GB RAM, except one thing:
Sometimes when I work for a long time, my mouse justs freeze,
The red light near the RAM slots appears and the fans start being noisy ! (LED 7—Checkstop: red—contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider)
I reboot and all just works fine until the next freeze
I ran Hardware test and apple diagnotics many times but all the tests including the ram test passed successfully.
It happens like 1 or 2 time by day. I couldn't identify the cause or the frequency of the problem (maybe Eyetv usb box, or a spécific app that causes the computer freezing ??? !)
    Thanks for the help !

Curiously - we have two new Dual 2.3 G5s and they exhibit this same behavior. Suddenly freezing - and not necessarily while we have a lot of apps running. iTunes is always going in the background though. I'll start monitoring the temps on these machines and we'll see what happens. Does anyone know of a menubar app that might display CPU temp on the fly? Could be useful if we see a spike in temperature and then a crash.
One notable thing though, when it does crash, it crashes hard. Everything freezes, the audio (since iTunes is usually running) begins to skip on the last section of the track it was playing, sort of like a skipping record - only much faster. It also appears to have happened to one of the machines last night while it was asleep. I came in the morning the the fans were going crazy - and yes, the little red LED was on. What does that mean?

  • Airport Extreme Card for my Apple Power Macintosh G5 Dual Core (2.3) Late 2005 - M9591LL/A - PowerMac 11.2 - A1117

    Hello there, I have an Apple Power Macintosh G5 Dual Core (2.3) Late 2005 - M9591LL/A - PowerMac 11.2 - A1117.
What Airport extreme & Bluetooth card I need?  why the memory are so hard to find? can I use another faster DDR2 memory?
Sorry for to many question but I search on "Saint Google" and there is too much information not precise.
    Tnxs a lot
    Pablo

You need an Airport Bluetooth module with the required runway card.
    Here is the kit:
    http://www.dvwarehouse.com/Apple-AirPort-Extreme/Bluetooth-Upgrade-Kit-for-Power -Mac-G5-Dual-Core--Quad-Core-Late-2005--MA252G/A---Refurbished-p-36513.html
    Get memory here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/PowerMac-G5-Memory
    100% compatible and lifetime guaranteed....
You can use a faster memory, but it will not run faster, will likely report wrong and may give other issues.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual Core Screen Goes Black Randomly But Seems To Still Be Running. I have to Force Quit

I totally just typed way to much info in the title.
In any event, my G5 Dual Core's(late 2005) screen will randomly go black with out notice. Its happend while designing in illistrator and also while browsing google(primarly the use of my comp is graphic design). The fans stay on and it sounds to still be fully running however the screen will not wake up and if i tap the power button it doesnt wake up either. I reset the "PRAM" while booting up, i toggled my screen saver/power saver also so its "never".
I thought the HD was faulty cause it sounds like a light saber at times... I figured the OS was crashing(im ingorant) so I bought a new one and more ram as well. I've installed the HD and am waiting for 10.3 OS to get here in hopes that the new HD and OS will not crash(again that was my educated guess as to what the issue was).
Is it a video card issue? faulty cable you think(VGA to DVI 17" Samsung)?
Thanks so much in advance for any and all feed back along with the patience of a newbie to the forum/community world.

  • Dual monitor for Power mac g5 dual 2.3ghz

I wanted some advice on which monitors to get for a dual monitor setup and if its even possible to setup on my G5 or do I need a different video card?
    Here's my computer spechs:
Power mac G5 dual core 2.3 ghz (late 2005)
    Model: A1177
    Memory: 2GB DDR2 SDRAM
    HDD: 250GB
    OS X 10.5.8 Leopard
The only thing I run on this is logic studio 8. I wanted to expand my setup but not sure how.
Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks

It depends on which video card you have installed, though not much.  Whichever card you have installed, you should have two DVI outputs available.  With the minimum 256 Meg VRAM, you should be able to support two 1920x1080 monitors without a problem, and the "HD" monitors are getting very plentiful and dropping in price.  Were I to buy today, I would make sure to get an LED monitor, as that flavor should have a longer overall life than a florescent panel monitor.  You can find monitors in 23" dimensions for under $200 a pop, and more 27" monitors are showing up at a slightly bigger bite.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0 GHz Model #M9032LL/A - Is it usable?

I have a lead on a used Power Mac G5 Dual Processor, Model #M9032LL/A. I'm trying to determine if these models were any good - any known issues, any recurring problems? I know that it's not liquid cooled - any problems with overheating? I believe this is one of the earlier G5s, manufactured in June 2003. This one comes with 2.5GBs of memory and the price seems fair. It will be used as my son's primary computer - he does music as well as the normal high school work. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I use this same machine at work. Bought it when it first came out in 2004. This baby is a work horse, used for a minimum of 8 hrs. a day since I got it and not one problem. Its also easy and cheap to upgrade (RAM, Graphics, HD and Optical, if needed). We can easily afford to replace it with a new Intel machine but we choose not to because of this machines speed and stability. If the price is right, do it.

  • Suggestions for disks from Power Mac G4 Tower?

I still have the complete disk set for my old Power Mac G4 desktop system (it died and I've moved on to two MacBook Pros). Any suggestions for what I should do with them?
    Thanks for the advice

Suggest you join LEM-Swap for buying & selling Mac stuff. http://groups.google.com/group/lemswap After you join, post a FS (For Sale). Be specific about what model G4 they came with, because they may only work with that model.

You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

  • Please help me upgrade my new/used Power Mac G5

I recently receieved a used Power Mac G5, Model Identifier: PowerMac7.2.
    The Specs are:
Apple Mac G5 Tower. G5 1.6gHz Processor, 1 Gig DDR Ram, SATA 80 GiG Hard Drive, DVD-R Optical Drive, Nvidia AGP FX 5200 64 Bit Video Card. This unit operates on Leopard 10.5 OS
Can someone who knows Macs well help me with software and hardware. What is the best set up I can have to make my G5 fast, powerful, and up-to-date without buying a new one.
I have a mac book pro. I just want to fix up this older G5. Thanks for reading this, and I would really appreciate your input.

Highest OS you should use is 10.5...Leopard. RAM...between 4GB and 8GB.  It will run FCP 7...the entire suite...but it will not convert anything to ProRes.  It doesn't have the power.  It won't be able to deal with most (talking 80-90%) of the new camera formats (AVCintra, AVCHD, H.264, RED).
Sorry, but that machine is 6 years out of date.  Actually...1.6Ghz processor...8 years out of date.  There is no way it will be "up to date."  Your MacBook Pro will run CIRCLES around it.

  • 3rd party N card for a G5 Power Mac?

    Hi all!
I am considering buying a wireless card for my G5 Power Mac. My base station is only a .11g, but I figure I might upgrade somewhere down the line, so I might as well get a .11n card for the Mac if I go this route. As near as I can tell, Apple does not sell .11n Airport Extreme cards for the G5s, and probably doesn't intend to, yes? So, can I plug a standard 802.11n PC card into one of my G5 slots and have it work fine? Does anyone have a recommendation of brand for same?
    Thanks in advance!

    Do you have a source.
I just walk into a computer store, in England I use Maplin for example. I goto the networking section pick up a card that is say £6 for a PCI gigabit card. I look through the plastic sleeve inside the box and can see RTL printed on the chip. So I know its a realtek chipset.
But here ya go when I googled for 'cheap NIC card' I found
    Gigabit Card $9
    100baseT card $3
As it has a realtek chipset it should work on your mac with no extra drivers to install.

  • Best video card for a Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz

What is the best video card I can upgrade to with my Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi-
The best is probably the one that you can find..... getting hard to find Mac 8x AGP cards.....
Best OEM cards are (were) Radeon 850XT, Radeon X800XT, Geforce 6800 Ultra and Geforce 6800 GT, in order from fastest.
    X800 vs. others
Now, most options are the above, used, or, flashed PC cards. PC cards include the above, but have one faster than even the X850XT- the Geforce 7800 GS.
    7800 GS in a G5

  • Should I get a new Mac Pro or a used Power Mac G5, and why?

I'm trying to decide which of these would be a better choice and better cost/benefit/value ratio.
I spend my time in Photoshop CS and Adobe Lightroom most of the time. I have NO intention of running Windows, so I wouldn't miss that by going with the G5.
    What are your thoughts?
    Here's a G5 that looks pretty tempting.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-Power-Mac-G5-Dual-1-8-Ghz-4GB-1000GB-DVD-R-Maxed_W0QQi temZ190131690775QQihZ009QQcategoryZ51036QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

That is a lot of "maybe's" and big "if's" - there will ALWAYS be change and updates, and no one knows what or when. Just 'speculation'. Or, needed? not if someone things they would be happy with 4 yr old G5, they aren't worried about the next upgrade and leading edge.
I don't know that the Mac Pro is a year old. Then again, it hasn't changed. One new model configuration added.
As for "$1000 upgrades" that is a PLUS, not a MINUS as you can't even find video or stuff more memory, and limited on disk drives with the G5.
The G5 would turn in a score of less than half of 2GHz MP, more like 1/4 especially with stock 2.66. $1895 for Apple ref's @ www.apple.com for MP, too.
Do your shopping on Apple Store Specials, not ebay. A lot of G5s are showing their age and in need of some heavy cost fixes, PSU, failing video, logicboard ... and you may be out on a limb.

  • Power Mac G5, Dual 1.8GHz - Sluggish Video

    Hey Guys.
    I purchased a used Power Mac G5 couple months back. Its a Dual 1.8GHz, 2.5GB Ram, 160GB Hdd, Geforce FX5200 64Meg AGP.
Ive noticed sense i got the machine that when watching video's on youtube or any type of high resolution video's, the playback is choppy. Even scrolling through webpages seems a bit choppy. With just standard applications the machine runs great and its nice and quick. Its just the video play back that is kind of hauting me. Now this may be a stupid question but will i notice a difference if i were to purchase another higher grade video card? Or is my machine not powerful enough for HD playback? Do i need more ram? Anyways thanks in advance for any type of advice.
    -Jess

The 5200 is the weakest of the G5 AGP cards, and almost any other card would be an improvement.
Bear in mind that there are two flavors of AGP card, well three, really. There are Mac OEM cards like many of the Radeon 9600 and 9800 cards, many of which have one DVI and one ADC connector, or the GeForce 6800 GT and Ultra cards, which are considerably better than the 9600 Radeons and somewhat better than the 9800's. That being said, the second flavor is the PC AGP cards flashed to Mac ROM. Some fly, some don't fly so well. The third flavor is the PC AGP cards not flashed with Mac ROM, which are, in a word, unusable on a Mac.
With respect to Flash content, I will say that at least with Flash Player 10, you can expect with a GeForce 6800 Ultra OEM card to see sluggish playback in some cases, mainly because of CPU loading from the Flash plugin. In most cases, the 6800 Ultra is a pretty peppy card, but if things are loading the CPU, it can't help you much. With respect to scrolling and things like that, the better cards generally handle things pretty fluidly, but again, if there is a Flash or Java script running somewhere, like in an advertisement, things can get sluggish because of CPU loading.
One thing I would do is get a larger drive in there. A SATA-1 or SATA-2 drive should work just fine; a SATA-3 drive will undoubtedly need a jumper to bring it back to SATA-1 speeds.
