An amazing helpful thing!!

A few months ago a friend who works at MSI had told me that by the end of 2014 MSI would come out with something completely different, a wifi web camera.
My friend said that MSI was planning to break into this market but didn’t give me too many details. I had a lot of questions in my mind at this time. Mainly, MSI was known for their Notebooks, Motherboards and Graphics Cards, how they planned to enter this market which was already so dominated by other companies a market that seemed already crowded.. Well after we finished chatting he sent me a sample for me to take a look at, so here it is, the MSI SomeThings PANOCAM.
My first impression was that the MSI SomeThings PANOCAM was not too large but had really high quality packaging. I really love the blue colour they have used in the packaging and especially love how clean and modern it looks.
Inside the box was a quick start guide. Three simple instructions to get underway. The camera has a fish eye lens and is supported via wifi. The small cylinder was completely different from any webcam I had ever seen before.
And the name? Well my friend had said that “SomeThings” was a name that was to mean “service” – it seems MSI had not created just a camera, but an entirely new line of focus.
The back of the packaging showed some of the features provided by the PANOCAM, which included 360 degree viewing angle, iOS and Android compatibility – with an App that can be downloaded easily from both the iTunes App Store and Google Play. So I opened up the iTunes App Store on my iPhone and searched for “SomeThings” to begin my download.
When I opened the box and looked over the quick start guide I was glad to see that they had used that gorgeous blue colour again! The layout of the quick start guide was simple and I found it incredibly easy to understand, the pictures and simple steps made for a great first time user experience.
While the instructions are provided in English my friend had told me that a multi-language version would be available soon.
However, with the included pictures and very brief set up I don’t think that non native English speakers would have any difficulty setting up the PANOCAM with the current quick start guide.
Next was the unveiling of the main event, the beautiful cylindrical silver camera. Sleek in design with a nod to the look of the iconic MacBook in some ways. The metal outer layer with protective plastic molding. My friend had said that the camera differed from cheap plastic cameras currently available on the market and I agree that this modern almost artistic design would fit in well along most home décor but with class comes expense so I joked to him that it was more suited to the home accessories area!
So first I took a look at what parts came inside the box. A 10W power supply, A rubber cushion covered in black material emblazoned with MSI which I soon learned was to allow the camera to lay flat to support different angles of shooting and lastly pieces to allow you to mount the camera to a wall or ceiling.
The powercord connected to the machines body is 2 metres in length, which if you are mounting to a ceiling or wall is very useful!
I used a coin to pop open the cover. Inside there is a Micro SD slot so in order to be able to save images or video I inserted a 32GB Micro SD card.
Next to the Micro SD card slot there was a small black hole which is used to factory reset the camera, my friend had said if there were any issues to use a pin to factory reset while the unit was plugged in and just to hold for about 5 seconds and it would beep at me!
In the middle of the device you can also see the threading where it can be mounted to a tripod another small convenience for end users.

Thanks for sharing Something is a practical home accessory with easy set-up steps, quality design, wide shooting angels and reasonable price.  it is a great choice.

  • Lens shopping help, things to consider.

Because this is a new forum with very few members from the forums I belong to, and one with a lot of questions from people who appear to be fairly new to DSLR’s I thought I’d start a discussion on picking lenses & the flaws in a lot of the internet advice out there. There is a lot more to buying the right lens than just buying the one with the best Image Quality (IQ) when tested by one of the major review sites. Fixed focal length (primes) will almost always get the higher rating when compared to zooms, and in general the more expensive lenses will get the higher rankings. That’s all well & good but very few of us have the required skill set & technique to get even close to to the last few percent of IQ they can deliver while hand holding. If you’re strictly a tripod shooter, you may get close, but that’s not likely the case when shooting without it. Very high shutter speeds help, but you can’t rely on being able to use them for the majority of your shooting.
Relying on user reviews is helpful but that also has it’s flaws because many users don’t have good enough technique to properly evaluate their lens. Many only shoot in Auto or Program mode, and they don’t hold their camera / lens steady enough for the shutter speed the camera selects. Many don’t even know the proper way to hold a long lens, and the longer (more MM’s it covers) the more important it becomes to both hold it steady & use a higher shutter speed.
So what does this mean? I’m suggesting that far too many are trying to pick lenses that don’t fit the job at hand which is getting the shot. Zooms although lower in IQ are more versatile & offer a lot more opportunities than a sharper prime, but more importantly most of us, myself included, will be hard pressed to see that difference in our photos. That doesn’t mean you buy the cheapest version of a lens that has the range you’re shopping for, it means that you should buy the best you can afford and learn how to use it to it’s potential. Putting the purchase off until you can afford the very best in class will cost you a lot of missed photos, & some of those could have been your best work to date.
I’m sure there are other opinions on this & hopefully others will add their thoughts & experiences. I’ve gone through a lot of lenses over the last few years trying to find the very best for my needs, which aren’t mainstream, & I’ve settled on lenses many say aren’t worth buying. It’s a very good thing I didn’t give up & found out who to believe when reading user reviews at different sites.

Image Stabalizers are a very desirable feature , especially for older people like myself. Each lens maker has a different name for it but the idea is the same BUT most consumer grade lenses don't have a setting that allows you to use it while panning (tracking a moving target. IS (AKA OS, VC or VR) is primarily designed to help reduce camera shake while hand holding & shooting a stationary subject. It should be turned off when using a tripod or panning unless it has a panning mode. If it isn't turned off you'll get soft (or slightly fuzzy) images that look a little out of focus. Imagine how many bad user reviews that switch has caused. If the lens does have a panning mode switch don't forget to set it to match your intended use. With Canon lenses Mode 1 is for stationary subjects & Mode 2 is the panning mode. If your lens only has an ON / OFF switch turn IS off to pan.

  • Need some help, things are acting weird.

    Hey all
Not sure if this is the right place for this topic but i've run into something strange and was wondering if i could get some help fixing it.
I've noticed 2 things that are kind of strange that have been going on with my system lately. The first one is whenever any of my browsers reach the point of downloading a file (off of sites like macupdate, torrent sites, etc...) it just hangs on the screen and never actually downloads the files unless i go back and right click and 'save link as'. Now when I go to the same site with my powerbook running the same OS it doesn't have a problem.
Also, another big problem is certain installers (such as some vise ones) cause problems where they A: don't open at all or B: get to the point of the install and then just hang with a beach ball forever. Again when i run the same installers on my powerbook they seem to work just fine.
The computer in question is a Powermac G5 running OS X 10.4.9
I haven't upgraded to anything higher because I am a pro tools user and so far with this setup pro tools has not given me any issues.
If anyone has any suggestions that would be great.
    Thanks a lot.
    Cheers

Besides Thomas' great advice on DW, (worth it's weight in gold)...
I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • General diagnostics help - things are crashing!

I just got Logic Studio and it's big program with lots of parts to it and before I install it I wanted to make sure things are cool with my iMac. It's been crashing a fair amount recently. I called Apple and the girl (really nice) in the general section said it's probably good to take the imac to an apple store or apple authorized tecnhnician (and she gave me several in the area) and have them give it a once over. Then I spoke with a guy in the pro apps department (nasty and bored) who said the thing to do is:
    1) Try running disk utility from a system bootup disk (Leopard, wchih I have around here somewhere)
    2) Do an Archive and Install from the Leopard Disk (and then get all the updates etc). which will just replace the system, not anything else.
    3) Do an erase and install from the Leopard disk, which will mean having to reinstall any third party apps.
    Whadaya think?

My system currently is Leopard, 10.5.8. Can I do any/all of these processes (1,2 and 3) with a Snow Leopard disk? Or should it be the same system I currently have?

My iPhone 4 is using 4.3.3 and I want to update to iSO 6.1.  I can back it up and it starts to download it through iTunes but then I get an error message 0xE8000067.
Tried all the things on the apple support site (checked USB port, deleted the 3 exe files in Task Manager, tried a new cable).  None worked.  Got the same message on my old computer.
    Any ideas??

Amazing help from apple support over the phone.  Restoring the computer fixed the problem.

  • Long-time Eudora user, rookie Mail user--have questions, need help!

    Hi, all!
As the subject heading says, I've been using Eudora for a very long time (way past its shelf life) and have been playing around with Mail off and on over the past year.  (Now, in Eudora's defense, the expiration date on it was a "Best by..." not a "Use by..." date   and it's been working fantastically for years! )
I recently started to plunge into Mail more deeply and have a couple of questions.
    1. Drafting vs. queuing.
I am used to Eudora's system where a bunch of drafted messages sit in an Outbox.  They stay there until I flag QUEUE for the ones I'll eventually be mailing.
It's a good system.  A quick look at the flags in the Outobx lets me know which I still to need to work on, and which ones are ready to go out (or need a final review before sending).   The user then selects "Send Messages" and it e-mails the ones queued in the Outbox, but not the remaining draft emails that haven't yet been queued.
How do I set up something like that in Mail?
Right now, all I have is a list of draft messages and I cannot tell which ones are still really drafts and which are ready to be sent!
    2.  Work-around to try and mirror Eudora's system.
I tried creating a new mailbox called Queue, in which I can park the emails I've done editing.  Of course, the problem with such a scheme is that when I want to send messages, I either have to put them back into the Drafts mailbox, from where I can select and send everything (including ones I haven't finished editing!), or drag them into Mail's Outbox where they go out instantly.  That's a little freaky and I can see disasters happening (emails going out when I'm wanting to drag other messages to a different mailbox).
    3.  Disable auto-sending?
Is there a way of turning off and on the Outbox's automatic sending action?  That could be the simplest solution for me.  I'd really like to send messages only via a menu command--yet, from I've determined, Mail's Send menu command will send any messages selected in the Draft mailbox.  Again, I see screw-ups with that as the wrong draft could be selected and Mail would send it out.
    4.  Display of badges for mailboxes.
This is more of a curiosity, but is there a way of having a user-created mailbox show how many e-mails are in there?
    Solutions?
What do you all do as to work flow?  How do you go about creating and revising a bunch of e-mails, but only sending out certain ones?  And ensuring that only the ones you want to go out, go out?!

Thank you for posting all this info.  Unfortunately i have no idea how to do flags and how to use a smart mailbox as a place to store emails i am not ready to send.  Eudora is vastly superior in all the things it empowers the user to quickly and easily do, in the traditional Apple spirit of intuitiveness, clear direct normal (not esoteric) communicatioin and user friendliness.
about three weeks ago i was pretty much forced into Mountain Lion bcause my old MacBook is barely functioning at all and i got a new MacBook Pro.  So, good bye Eudora that i've used since 1995, only because i couldn't find another mail program that did what it does.  I wonder why there aren't others.  I've tried MailForge, it's a great attempt but it seems to have run out of steam and isn't working well enough.
I am using Mail and Gmail. The result is i'm suffering a whole range of loss of functionality in email, and am not getting a lot of messages, they are here somewhere but i can't always find them, i have to go to my old computer, enduring a kind of freeze where a beachball is a sign of progress, a trackpad that barely works for drag and drop anymore and a battery that needs reaplacing. i think the hard drive is failing. but i still need it to retrieve my email reliably, to a poiint where i see i 'm going to have to put money into it so it can keep working, for email.  what a poor solution. I am trying as best i can to have Mail communicate better.
i just wanted to thank you for your encouraging posts and giving me something to follow up on to try to use, to address this one of many loss of Eudora problems. Why wouldn't a mail program give you the option to queue mail?   Why take away options and functionality?   sorry, i'm just ranting because i've had a very frustrating last few weeks related to numerous new OS challenges, but email is the only really serious one.
I really like your idea of badges to show number of new messages, i think that's what you meant, you didn't say 'new', but another great and helpful thing about Eudroa is sorting mail into mail boxes and opening those mailboxes that get new mail each time you download mail, so you kow what's new. You can immediately see it.  In Apple Mail, i find i have to dig through each of the 12 'on my mac' mailboxes/folders i created so far, to see if there is new mail in them. A lot of extra trouble for something that a superior email program can do for you.

  • No longer connecting to FTP in DW11 (CS5) HELP!

Suddenly in DW CS5 Version 11, I no longer can connect to the FTP. Message from DW is:
Toggling the "Use Passive FTP" checkbox may help you establish a connection. - Select or de-select the checkbox and click Test to try again. - If you are connecting to an IPv6 enabled server, please select the "Use IPv6 transfer mode" checkbox in the Advanced site definition dialog. If the problem persists, check your network settings, including the local firewall settings on your computer, or consult your network administrator.
All the help out there is much appreciated! Tks!

    Hi Jon,
Sorry, I don't understand: "connect the computer directly to your modem,
rather than going through the router"? I connect through Airport wifi, not
clear as to what you mean the MODEM vs the router. (Silly Q, weren't modems
    used back with dial up?)
But if I am able to connect (via the modem) to the FTP, it is the router,
    got it. (Router's Firewall?)
3rd Party, meaning the router, right? Or the Host provider, which per their
checks at GoDaddy, all looked fine.
Sorry, I'm a designer and not all that technical regarding setting up
routers etc. Although I have used Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop --well
forever, no really, since Adobe Illustrator '88! Since I have the Creative
Suite I taught myself (via video Tutorials @ AdobeTV) how to use
Dreamweaver, THEY ARE FANTASTIC, but I do get lost on some of the lingo so
thanks for bearing with me. AND for your amazing help!

  • In the middle of a business deal and my new apple lion has given up receiving emails. Please help

Ibought an Apple Mac Lion two months back and it hs gvn me little trouble until 5 days ago when I became embroiled in a business deal involving much emailing.Suddenly it hs stopped delivering emails.I dont know if it is sending any although outgoing mail sits in my Sent file
    What must I do?

well, I can get you started anyways. Fire up the Mail.app, run Connection Doctor --that'll show you if you can get and send email. call your ISP (internet service provider) and see if you do webmail through them. check to make sure your mail account is set up according to how they'd like to do it, with the appropriate POP and SMTP settings. your trouble might be on their end, rather then on your end of things.
also, in your sent box, check by "date sent". There's also a help thing in Mac Mail which might be good.
    it's something, anyways

  • HELP!!! "Charging is not supported with this accessory" suddenly happening CONSTANTLY with iphone 4

Suddenly without warning my IPhone 4 has been giving me a "charging is not supported with this accessory error" every time I plug it into ANY charging device.  That means my car charger, USB to the PC... USB to a macbook pro... Directly to the wall with the included charger, etc.  It doesn't matter.  I guess I'm past the 1 year warranty so Apple is not any help.  Essentially I'm supposed to accept that my $200 (with a contract) phone has a 1 year life span and that I should be completely fine with it becoming useless out of nowhere.  Here's some facts.
#1 - It has nothing to do with 3rd party accessories.  One day it was working... one day it wasn't.
#2 - I cleaned lint out of the charging port on the phone.  That was the first thing I tried. I used compressed air to blow it out, I used a soft bristle tooth brush...  It's lint free.  It has nothing to do with lint.  I understand this is the most likely cause of the problem.
#3 - When I plug it into a PC or macbook via USB, I'm able to access the IPhone 4 like I ALWAYS have.  In other words, I can see pictures, I can back up the phone, I can restore the phone, I can transfer music, sync, etc.  So this would presumably rule out the idea that it's the dock connector, right?  Why would USB work, but the charging function will NOT work?
#4 - On that note, I was able to update the software to the latest version 5.1.1.  That was one of the first things I tried.  No dice.  I still get the "charging not supported with this accessory" error literally every time I plug it in with a yellow triangle icon... Seen here for example: http://tapatalk.com/mu/4c5f44af-af20-d86c.jpg .
#5 - So since it's not charging, the phone inevitably dies.  Here's the weird part... if I leave it plugged into the wall/pc/mac/car when it's dead... eventually it will charge enough to turn back on.  But once it's back on... that **** error will pop back up, it will stop charging... and inevitably die again.  So then... that would suggest that it actually IS capable of taking a charge... it's just that something in the software is preventing it from charging when the software is active, no?  Am I off base here?
#6 - So I decided I'd take it to the genius bar to have them look at it.  Right before I did that, I got the brilliant idea to try using an alcohol swab on the dock connector just to make sure it was super duper extra clean.  Oddly enough, it suddenly started working without the error.  It was working on every charger I tried.  Wow.  I thought I had fixed it.  A day later it started happening again, though.  Bizarre.  I've tried the alcohol swab thing again and it didn't make a difference... maybe it was just a fluke.... the one day I take it to the Apple genius bar and it works.  Go figure, right?
#7 - The only helpful thing the tech at the Apple Genius Bar was able to tell me was that the phone did NOT have any kind of water damage.  That rules that out.  No water damage in the charging dock OR the headphone jack.  So there's that.
#8 - Since it's no longer under warranty... I took it upon myself to buy a replacement battery via Amazon.com and installed it myself.  Didn't make a difference... still the same error.
What, if anything, can I try?  Could it really be the dock connector?  Should I try replacing the dock connector?  Is there any software-related thing I can try?  Has this happened to anyone else?   Apple has essentially told me it's my problem.  From my perspective... any product that randomly stops working a little over a year is a faulty product.  I'm not pleased at all.

Tried at least 6 different cables.  It isn't the cable.  All of them worked one day... then stopped working the next day.  My girlfriend has an identical Iphone 4 and all of the cables still work for her.
Interesting point on the data and power using different pins.  So your suggestion would be to replace the dock connector?  Found this on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-iPhone-dock-connector-cable/dp/B003UGVOO2/ref=sr_1_1 ?ie=UTF8&qid=1338277549&sr=8-1 ... and found a tutorial online:  http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-iPhone-4-Dock-Connector/3147/1#.T8SG_sXWu -o  ... Sounds like that might be my best bet here.
It's just odd to me that the phone gives me that error and refuses to charge... then inevitably dies.  But once the phone is dead, it starts charging enough to actually turn back on.  Isn't that slightly odd?

  • Help with managing RAW and jpeg images and installing iphoto 9

Greetings: Fist, let me make the neophyte apology and plea - I'm sorry, I should have come here first; I didn't and now I need your help.
I have just purchased a macbook pro (still in its box) with updated software for my older imac os x. I have a number of Canon related photo editing programs (that came with my 40D digital SLR) and Adobe photo elements 6 for mac on the imac. Following some erroneous advice I have made a complete mess of the pictures folder's content by trying to delete images directly from that folder (there are now 6000+ images in the folder, many of which are duplicates(?). Most of the images are not tagged or labeled and some have been organized in/by iphoto (I corrupted the iphoto's library structure very early on by disrupting and editing its images - which might explain why iphoto had a difficult time 'finding' and displaying some of my photos). The picture folder now holds jpegs, smallRAW images (a Canon 40D photo format) and various duplicates of the orignal images - (some of the duplicates don't display as images, but as jpeg logos, which, when opened contain duplicate image or are completely black) The first time I downloaded RAW images into iphoto 6 the RAW data displayed as a black image. When shooting in smallRAW on the Canon 40D, the camera produces a jpeg image for 'easy viewing and editing in the camera' but it looks as though iphoto 6 made duplicates of the jpeg and the RAW data and stored them in different locals in the picture file. In an attempt to get the number of images down, I have been trying to delete them from the picture folder. (My daughters both download images rather indiscriminately in hopes of 'editing them on the computer' which inevitably does not happen) and there is a lot of experimental bracketing of images - shooting raw and different Camera formats etc., all of which need to be cleaned up before I proceed.
Sometime in the not-too-distant future I would like to have iphoto 9 running on my imac with a clean library of images and a seamless way of downloading, editing and storing images (including the RAW data).
The macbook pro is for my highschool-aged daughter, who will run iphoto 9 but not have any RAW image data on her system. She would like to copy some of the old iMac's images to put into her own iPhoto 9 library (probably using a disk, email or on-line photo service - ideally, I would like to be able to copy and remove a number of those images from my HD and give them to her for the macbook)
A few questions and queries: Can I 'dis-able' iphoto 6, while I delete images (RAW and jpeg) from the picture file? (and is this even a good idea).
Once I have edited the # of images down to a reasonable size, should I re-launch iphoto 6, rebuild the iphoto library and then update to iphoto 9 or skip v6 and rebuild with v9?
And now for the 'how stupid is this guy question' - I really had planned to purchase an external backup; but between new the macbook, car repairs and braces it has never come to fruition. So, I have never properly backed up my images. What is the bare-bones, least expensive method for me to do this? I'd even consider burning everything to disks if that works. I can't afford the $ to purchase a new external hard drive right now (really). Budget is set aside mid-November for one though.
I've been looking through some other discussion boards and it looks like I'm not the only one having RAW image issues. I know that shooting smallRAW with the companion jpeg is probably not helping things but I take my camera equipment on extended canoe trips - and we like the ease of on-the-spot editing with this format.
Thanks in advance for your help - Mark

Terence, Is the picture folder the primary source for the images or does that data reside somewhere else?
If you gathered them there, then yes.
I really don't want to have to go through 14,000 images looking for the pictures that I want to keep (or is that my only option?).
Only you can decide what you want to keep.
Why does the computer keep making copies of the images and filing them under date and events?
That's how iPhoto works. It's not a problem usually, only you did go in there and make a problem, and now we are trying to fix it.
You advise not to muck around in the picture file via preview,
No I don't. I advise not to much around in the iPhoto Library Folder.
but if I download images through a program other than iPhotos - image capture or adobe aren't I doing that anyway?
Adobe what? Adobe is a software manufacturer who make many excellent applications, you need to be more precise. And no, if you import photos with Image Capture or “adobe” no you are not interfering with the iPhoto Library Folder.
Can you edit a base image file somewhere and remove it from the HD without iphoto making a copy of it and storing it somewhere else?
This is stunningly easy. Don't use iPhoto. Use an image editor.
I want to look the negatives, decide which ones I want and throw the rest away. Can that be done or am I way off course?
Yes, and iPhoto (or similar apps) make this really easy.
Hook up your camera. Import the pics to iPhoto. Go through the imported pics. Trash the ones you don't want. Then process the ones you do. But you must learn how to use iPhoto to do this successfully
To trash: put the pic in the iPhoto trash and empty it. This removes the file from iPhoto and the Hard Disk.
Process it: If you want to use another editor: You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Help Me Please! Administrator Password Help!!!! Pleaseeeeeee!!!

+*I just got this MacBook laptop and when I tried to make a password to login, it asks me my old password (but I tried that several times it does not seem to work). Mac Help thing suggests to put the Install CD and reset it or something....
But, does reinstalling erase the applications you put in the computer? as in iWork? or does reinstalling deletes your saved stuff?
And, P.S. is reinstalling bad? (is the disc reusable?)
Does, reinstalling cause any CHANGE to your computer?
    Please, kindly someone help me!!
Thanks in advance. (I just had it for three days or so... I love it...but I would like to solve this problem regarding the administrator's username and password thing. (Because software updating and all seems to need this password too so..
    +*

Roam's advice will do the trick but I am puzzled. Why do you need to MAKE a password to log in? If you bought the device new you would have set up a password when you booted and thus created the first user. I do hope you set a password then and did not decide you 'could not be bothered by passwords'.
If you bought the box second hand there may be users and passwords already there in which case Roam's advice will allow you to alter them. It is not a good thing to accept someone else's users and passwords. They know the passwords then and can get into the machine, and more to the point there could be all sorts of stuff on the HD that could cause a problem. Advice is to do an erase and install but that is another story. As said you are not to proceed to re-install you just go through the first few steps of the routine to a particular app to re-set passwords. Re-installing is a clart as it needs, if done in a particular way, that you re enter application keys and other settings. It does not make the HD un useable. It is normally recommended to make a bootable backup of the whole HD before re-installing the wholeOS.
