An appeal to Nokia - GPS and time

This is an appeal to Nokia to create products that make use of the fact that GPS receivers can give accurate time.
I'm an amateur astronomer, and GPS and Java-enabled mobile phones are an absolute godsend - I can whip out my phone and, with a built-in GPS and the right software, it will figure out where I am and hence what is visible in the sky.
EXCEPT that what is visible in the sky is also dependent on the time. And sometimes, having access to accurate time can make all the difference.
For instance, I am currently working on updating software I wrote to calculate the circumstances of total solar eclipses - something that a GPS-enabled mobile phone is perfect for. And a couple of seconds error in the phone's clock can make all the difference.
So please please Nokia make use of the fact that GPSes can give (astonishingly) accurate time.

To sync to GPS time on your Nokia phone, you need either Free TimeSync or FreeTimeBox,
These are free ware apps which allow you to sync to GPS time.
here's a link to Free TimeBox
http://nucellphone.com/freetimebox-v1-06-for-nokia-s60v5
Its the newest version compatible for s60v5, but AFAIK it should work on non touch phones as well.

  • Using Nokia 5800 GPS and accepting a call

Hi, I was wondering if there was a way to answer calls while the GPS is on on my Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition.  Currently, when I use the GPS and someone calls, I tap the answer button, but I get a message that says not allowed.  I was looking around in the settings, but can't find anything.  I was hoping there would be a way to answer the call and turn on the speakerphone so I can drive and talk at the same time.  Anyway know if this is possible?
    Thanks!

Getting my first call during active turn-by-turn navigation, I wondered about this strange behaviour too. As it is I dont see any green phone icon on the navigation screen. With the terminal placed in the included windscreen fixture, it is hardly traffic safe to have to press many buttons to get the handsfree activated! Nokia could consider another option on the main screen when a call is waiting to be accepted, for going directly to speakerphone-mode, or at least a configurable option within the maps application. As of now it jumps back to the maps app, which induces the added (two) press of the application switch button. I suppose buying a separate handsfree kit might 'solve' this basic issue, but that should really not be needed out-of-the-box with a dedicated navigation edition. If someone figures a setting that I have overlooked, I would be pleased to get a hint, thx.

  • My new Nokia Lumia 800 changes date and time after...

When i switch off and on my Nokia Lumia 800, date and time changes: from 2 september 2012 8.00 to 2 march 2013 14.00. I need help to understand this strange problem and find a solution.

I had the same problem with my Lumia 800. The Lumia 800 kept changing time and date as soon as I switched it off and turned it back on. In my case, doing a HARD RESET helped to fix this. BEWARE! You will lose all your data!
Switch off your phone, hold Volume Down, Power, Camera buttons down. Switch phone on. As soon as it vibrates, release Power button, keep Volume Down and Camera button pressed for a few seconds.
I have the same problem and after going through all the various support sites- Nokia, O2, and endless forums I was told the same thing "Make sure your auto-update for date and time is switched to automatic" But after telling them I don't know how many times that my Lumia 800 didn't have this option, only a 24 hours switch I was told there was nothing that could be done. However I appear to have sorted it out myself. The problem appears to be (or on my phone at least) is wi-fi connection, before I turn my phone off I have to disconnect from wi-fi and when I turn the phone back on the date and time stays corrected.
When I set the date and time manually (for the 3000th time!!) I held in the power button until the slide down close screen disappeared then released it and the phone restarts, then I done it again- same proceedure just to be sure and ever since the date and time has stayed correct. BUT BE SURE TO TURN OFF WI-FI BEFORE SWITCHING PHONE OFF. Hope this helps

There is another smaller auxilliary battery in the phone. This battery is faulty on your phone. You need to have it replaced at your local Nokia Care Point.

You can sync them via your computer's iTunes : connect the iPad to your computer and select it in your computer's iTunes, and then select its Photos tab :
And on that tab select the folder that the photos that you want to copy are in and sync/apply that selection to your iPad.
To remove the photos from the Photos app you will need to do similar to above, but select and sync an empty folder (you can't delete synced photos directly in the Photos app, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync).
Or you could email them to yourself and use 'open in' in the Mail app to copy them to the Photos app

  • Nokia 6110 and GPS function

I am new to the concept of GPS, and i assumed when i bought this phone that using the GPS was as simple as turning it on and requesting the location you want.
How do I get the GPS to work? I go into the GPS menu and it starts "Getting position...", but i wait and nothing happens. It can never find my position. And I live in Sydney, so it cant be bad reception. Are there any settings I need to instal or download?
Also, what is the Route 66 CD for? I tried to use that and it couldnt detect my phone?

first of all, lets begin with the basics. GPS is a signal that is send by many satellites to locate you. so if you are in a building, you will probably not get any satellite signal. so go outside and wait a few minutes. usually satellites send their position-signal each 30seconds to a few minutes, and your mobile phone has to calculate its place after it got those signals. the update about your position is then easier, it doesnt take 30 seconds to update your position, but it is contionuously.
sometimes it may be possible, that you got problems in cities with huge skyscrapers, that you dont get a signal or just sometimes in those places. that is normal (also no fault of the nokia 6110 navigator). the satellite signals simply dont get through the skyscrapers (you need a last 3 satellites with a good signal to get your GPS working).
the nokia 6110 navigator therefore got A-GPS (that you can also disable). Advantages: the location of yor place is easier and much faster as it gets the information at the beginning from the mobile phone antennas. however it needs therefore a short GPRS-connection (about 5 kb transfer), that might cost depending on your mobile phone provider.
so if you want to try that, enable it in your mobile phone settings (read the manual therefore, network based location method!), and enable it in nokia navigator-program. or disable it in both.
second, about your other problem. route 66 sync software detects your mobile phone, if you use the nokia usb cable provided with the mobile phone (even if other cables also fit, it doesnt work). also you have to install nokia pc suite and isntall the needed usb drivers. and last of all, you have to set your mobile phone to data transfer mode, and not to pc sync mode, to connect it in route 66 sync software!

  • Nokia 6230i forgetting time and date after 1sec ba...

Im used to that my 6230i and other nokia phones remember time and date after a sim card switch. The 6230i has now however started to forget time and date after sim card switch or just 1 sec battery removal.
What is the problem and how can it be fixed?
    Thanks

    Hi heraldo
There is I think a capacitor used to hold sufficient charge and this may now have failed. Entry level Nokia phones no longer retain time and date at all if battery removed.
Is your phone still under warranty?
Happy to have helped forum in a small way with a Support Ratio = 37.0

  • Nokia E61 Date and Time settings

I have Nokia E61, and not sure if I am the only one facing this issue...
Whenever I switch off and switch on the phone. it asks for time and date each time. (I am not removing/touching the battery)
I also have Good client installed and works perfect, only issue is, if I dial out any number it close the GPRS (Data) connection. I checked with my GPRS service provider, they say that its handset feature to have both simultaneously.
Please suggest any help on this.
    Thanks...

    Hello,
I think that you have to set up your current time zone. Check it please. To set it up go to Clock application -> Settings -> Time Zone.

  • GPS Access to high precision time and time stamping WASAPI microphone captures

I am interested in using multiple WPs to capture microphone WAV that is time stamped with high accuracy (sub millisecond), hopefully from the GPS system. The GPS hardware obviously has the capability to sub microsecond levels but I can't find an API for
    it.

What I would like to do is get geo positional data, which has a defined statistical uncertainty but might be relatively better correlated and as accurate a time stamp as possible.  Latency isn't an issue but consistency is. GPS, of course, easily produces
time information to sub microsecond though I don't know a way to access it in WP.  .1ms consistency would be all I really need but it's important that each phone in a cluster be able to capture and time stamp a sound (assume all phones are equidistant
from a source) to within .1ms. I am thinking of a product that could be used, for one obvious example at weddings, to capture the proceedings and allow after the fact enjoyment by replaying the proceedings and shifting the focus on the bride/groom minister
as they talk using beam forming dsp tech from the data. There are other ways but it occurs to me that the ubiquity of smart phones would really make this easy. Just have the guests download an app. It would be part of a wedding doc package along with videography
    and stills.

  • Gps and nokia drive

Hi, i have the new Nokia lumia why is necessary to have data connection to use Nokia drive? I this phone have a god why doesn't work with it. I had a Nokia x6 and Nokia maps it worked perfectly.could you make that Nokia drive works only with god and no with data transfer?
    Thanks

With the Lumia 800, even though you can pre-download map data, you can only search online for the moment. I am told this is still work in progress and full offline navigation should be available soon in future updates.

  • Issues with Ovi store in Nokia N8 and the OS is ha...

    Hi,
I have taken Nokia N8 in the month of March. It was all working fine and all of sudden I am noticing that the Ovi store is not opening tried resetting to factory settings, It did not help. Tried reinstalling the Ovi It also did not help. I went to Nokia Care and they said that they need to upgrade the software, They did but after that also the Ovi store is not opening they were also not able to install the ovi. they said that they need to check and if they cant then they need to send it to Delhi, I asked them for a Back up phone but they say that they cant give. what is this we take a Branded mobile paying such huge amount and when we have to give it service they say it will take a week to 10 days and for a time untill they confirm when they would give the mobile they cant provide a back up phone. Its really bad on Nokia. Its damaging the reputation of Nokia. Can this be looked into. Well I went to nokia care expecting a good hospitality but I felt like I went an Open market where if you want leave it else please keep moving....

  • Nokia 5030 and GSM 850/1900

    Hi,
My brother bought a Nokia 5030 phone for his trip to the USA, on the Nokia website at http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-5030/specifications Nokia 5030 according to specifications it support the following frequencies: EGSM 900/1800
    GSM 850/1900
The phone worked fine on the EGSM 900/1800 Frequency.
Before buying we checked with Nokia support and they told him that the phone should work in the USA. Now he is there and his Nokia 5030 couldn't detect any operator either by auto or manual search, he tried putting his SIM card in another phone and it detected a network, so its not the SIM.
I have tried contacting Nokia support in my country, and they still told me that the phone should work in the USA.
They told to try and perform a factory reset, but it didn't help.
Also the box says "made in Romania" and it has only EGSM 900/1800 written on it.
Also in the manual there is in mention of GSM 850/1900 frequency.
My brother had to buy another phone (a Nokia) to communicate with me.
Is there something wrong with that particular Nokia 5030 phone,
or it does not support GSM 850/1900 frequencies,
in that case why Nokia support tells me that it should work and the Nokia website lists that frequency in the specifications.
    Thanks.
Message Edited by sergy1 on 01-Oct-2009 09:04 AM

    Hi,
I see I’m not the only one that encountered that issue.
I think that unless you have a manual or box that says that the device supports GSM 850/1900 frequencies, it will unfortunately not work and I think that software update won’t solve it as it appears to be a hardware issue.
Its looks like that they’ve listed this phone as a quadband in their internal documentation so that the tech support and sales thinks that this phone is a quadband while its not.
(I called twice before buying and spoke with two different customer service representatives that assured me that the phone supports the US frequencies, and that it must have been a mistake that the manual does not list it as such.)
I hope that Nokia will notice and finally update the Nokia 5030 online specifications page, so that it would explicitly state that Nokia 5030 is not a quadband phone, like they did with their other phones.
    Here is a little update:
After escalating my support request, and speaking to the customer support manager (and repeatedly asking for them to verify it with global Nokia), Nokia Israel (It’s actually represented in Israel by a company called Eurocom) acknowledged my request to return the phone for a full refund to the retailer, and offered me a small compensation (which I guess is better that no compensation at all).
Today I should return it to the retailer, and I hope there won’t be additional problems with that.
One thing I liked about the phone, (I guess this feature is available on most new Nokia’s phones) is its alarm clock feature that pronounces the current time as it tells you to wake up…
    One more thing,
Notice the fine print that appears on the nokia 5030 specs page:
“The availability of particular products, services and features may vary by region. Please check with the Nokia dealer nearest you. These specifications are subject to change without notice”
I hope that you will be able to solve the problem like I did.

  • Nokia 6280 and NSU support: the final request

I've decided to write this because it's extremely shameful that still now, more than 2 years after its introduction on the market, the 6280 hasn't an official update support, only due to the damned problem with the update from firmware version 3.40.
Is it so difficult to implement into NSU a system of firmware version recognition, and, in case, to block updates for phones with that version installed?
I continue not to understand this strange policy towards certain phone models, that obliges users to apply to unofficial, and illegal, upgrade methods (that work perfectly, if correctly used!)
I hope that, with the release of the next firmware package 6.60 (if it'll be EFFECTIVELY released, instead of inserting false version numbers in the section "Can I update" of the upgrade page - see this /discussions/board/message?board.id=swupdate&thread.id=29440&view=by_date_ascending&page=1 ) you're going to correct this lack of availability.

Ok so we cant help him but sometimes its good to let off steam, especially as his Nokia fone has been such a disgrace. I hope he reflects on his previous Nokia purchases , and when it comes time to upgrade he chooses a Nokia product. Its also good to keep in touch with customer service elements of Nokia, as this is just, if not more important than the actual product. If customer service is lacking then where is the confidence in buying with confidence !!
    Nokia Lumia 520
     iphone 6 Plus.
    Be happy !!

  • How do I find the date and time stamp on pictures?

How do I find the date and time stamp for my pictures?

The Photos app will not do this but other apps will. iPhoto has an icon that when tapped with the photo open will show the EXIF information you are looking for. iPhoto is not free but you can purchase it in the App Store.
There may be other photo apps that provide this information as well.
PhotoForge2 will show the EXIF data as well as the GPS data if it is available.
