An Apple genius told me to delete all my SMS for stability sake, should I do it?

I'm experiencing random reboots on my iPhone4 so i've been to an Apple Genius Bar.
He told me my problems might come from a corrupted backup file.
To try to get rid of this I shall restore my iPhone and register it as a New One.
In the process I will lost all my SMS (1500+) and he say Apple provide no methods to restore them after this process.
Well this is quite a hard remedy as I backup on my iMac(+TM) and on iCloud and previoulsy i got it synced with the yet dead MobileMe.
What should I do is there an alternative?
I lived with random reboot since 6 month, i'm not sure its far worse than loosing memories...
Will Apple provide a way to Sync SMS with iMessage on Mountain Lion in a near futur?
If so it would totaly worth the wait for me!
EDIT: Here is a typical crash report of this kind of random reboot i experience, if it help.

You can save all the SMS to your computer with applications such as PhoneView before you restore you iPhone as new (not using any old backups) using applications such as PhoneView

but there is no way to get them back in the phone's message section.  You could make a file (e.g. PDF) of them on the computer and sync it to the phone if you need to see them on the phone.  You could access them with Mail or iBooks.
But as I can't restore SMS to the iPhone it's not a 100% percent satisfying method.
Can someone at least confirm that the problem comes from the backup and not the hardware?
The kernel panic keep refering to something linked to the carrier.
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x8b756941): "IOP panic: dma_int_handler: CDMA: channel 7 error interrupt, error status 0x10  "
As I will soon get opportunity from my carrier to upgrade to an iPhone 5, won't the upgrade process fix this mess in a more satisfying way?

After recent upgrade to Yosemite on Macbook air bluetooth audio cuts out and associated video stops with audio. Likewise with airplay and Apple TV. I have deleted all my saved wifi connections and restarted numerous times. I do not expect a resolution from the community, but hope to get the attention of Apple engineers. If you are having same problems or have a miracle cure I am all ears.

May start my own thread, but I'm having similar issues.
I've been using an old iMac (running 10.7.5) and Apple TV for years with no issues. Last week I bought a new Macbook Pro running Yosemite and have had audio issues multiple times. The weird thing is that sometimes it works flawlessly, other times (like now) I spend half an hour just trying to get a song to play.
My issues are: When I got to "computers" in Apple TV to stream my music, my music is sometimes chopper or intermittent, and I seen to know when it's going to happen based on the status wheel just before it plays. When I choose a song, the status wheel will spin for an unusually long time, usually an indicator that the audio is either not going to work, or stutter.
When it does finally pull up a song, the playhead sits at the beginning of the song for a good 3-5 seconds before actually playing. Then, when it starts playing, it's all downhill. It will play a few seconds, drop out, play a few more seconds, drop out, and then ultimately the playhead will keep moving across the song as if it's playing, but there's no audio.
Again, this is a new phenomenon never experienced by me. I've tried everything I could think of, some of them all at once:
    • restart Apple TV
    • restart Macbook Pro
    • quite iTunes/open
    • turn off Home Sharing on iTunes then reconnect it
    • unplugging and cycling both my modem and router
None of these have alleviated the problem.
The odd thing is, like this morning, the audio started up perfectly and never gave me any issues. It wasn't until later in the day that it started. Perhaps after the macbook pro had been put to sleep? Not sure.
Regardless, this is an annoying trait, one that's new to me and my system (as stated, worked flawlessly until my new purchase), and is 100% limited to either a) the macbook pro b) Yosemite or c) both of them.

  • I have an ipod touch and i just bought a new laptop, because i lost mine. i try to sync the music in the itouch to my new laptop but it asks me if i want to delete all my music before syncing  what should i do?

i have an ipod touch and i just bought a new laptop, because i lost mine which has all the data of my itouch. i try to sync the music in the itouch to my new laptop but it asks me if i want to delete all my music before syncing  what should i do?

You should use your backup copy of your computer to put everything on the new computer.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod.
The ipod will sync with one computer at a time. Syncing to another will erase teh content from the ipod.

  • Is there a way to delete all the messages for a user in CUC 8.6 ?

With Unity it was possible as an administrator, to delete all the messages in a user's mailbox, directly from the server (Windows).  Now, with Unity Connection (8.6.1) is there a way to do the same ?  When I'm logged as an administrator, I can see, for every user, the number of messages and the size (Mailbox menu) that they have in their mailbox, but what I want to do is to be able to delete all the messages for a specific user... Is it possible with CUC 8.6.1 ?

    Hi there,
The best way with Unity Connection is with the use of this excellent tool from
    the great suite of Unity Tools (** "reset" feature);
    Unity Connection Bulk User Delete
For resetting users you have the option of emptying the mailbox, resetting greetings, deleting voice names, resetting passwords, removing private lists and a number of other options you may choose.  For installations where the user base “changes over” frequently such as schools this may be a nicer option.  This option is also allowed for CoRes installations since it does not involve the removal of user objects from the Connection database.

    Cheers!

  • HT3302 An apple genius told me there was water damage in my iPhone 5 today which was the cause of the problems I am experiencing and suggested I pay £209 to replace it, I have since checked the LCI and it shows no sign of water contact. Why are they lying

After opening the sim holder and using a light and a magnifying glass to inspect properly the liquid contact indicator it was still perfectly white without a spot of red. Why did the Apple genius  lie to me and try to make me pay for a replacement phone when mine is under warranty and is experiencing an intermittent internal fault.the fault I am experiencing is the phone not recognising the SIM card every so often. It is fixed temporarily buly switching off and on again or removing and reinserting the sim.
My iPhone is up to date with the latest software and runs fine apart from this fault.

Why did the Apple genius  lie to me and try to make me pay for a replacement phone when mine is under warranty and is experiencing an intermittent internal fault.
There is more than one LI sensor.  In any case, there's no way for anyone but that genius to answer your question.  Why didn't you ask him when you were there?

  • I can delete all photos except for one album where no trash can appears. How can I get rid of the album?

I have an album of photos on my IPAD that I can not delete. It was imported from a camera card. I have managed to delete all other photos taken the same way but these appear to be stuck on the IPAD as no trash can icon appears. Also, my other photos appear in the imported folder and also albums. The photos in the album that won't delete only appear in that album?

  • I deleted a specific file folder from my Seagate backup drive, via Time Machine. Instead of only deleting that file, it deleted ALL my files for that date.

    1. Why? I was quite obviously selecting one file folder ONLY.
    2. Is there any way to retrieve the lost items?
    3. How do I avoid this happening in the future?

Never had any issues while deleting specific files/folders from a time machine backup.
However, regarding the original post, what do you mean by "file folder"? Did you select a FILE for deletion, or a FOLDER? These two terms tend to be quite different, you know.
If you selected a FOLDER, then ALL FILES inside the folder have been deleted. If you selected a single FILE, then only that file should have been deleted. "Delete all backups of..." is a completely different story.

  • Im trying to update my phone , but its telling me i dont have enough gigs and i deleted all my apps and pictures , what should i do ?

I am trying to update my phone to IOS 7 , But its giving me some trouble. I deleted all of my apps and all of the music off my phone , but its still telling me I don't have enough gigs . Please Help !

Try to sync after deleting a bunch of stuff, see if that clears up space.
If that doesn't work, then back up your device and then restore from that backup. That should do the trick.

  • My iphone 4 randomly deleted all my sms messages but i have back it up on my computer can i get them back?

my phone deleted all my messages and i was wondering if i could get them back?

If you backed up to your computer recently (should do this automatically when you sync, unless you disabled it), then you can restore the backup. Not really worth it, unless you've got a show stopper SMS message.

  • A "genius" at an Apple store told me to delete the photos from my documents folder and trash them and I would still be able to keep them in iPhoto.  Now I cannot use the photos other than in the iPhoto file. Can this be undone?

How can I retreive deleted iPhotos which were deleted from the documents and trash files?  I stupidly did this because a "genius" from Apple Store assured me that I would still have access to the photos.

    Check iPhoto's Advanced preference pane to see if it's set to a referenced or managed library;
If it's set to a referenced library you photos are gone.
If that's the case they might be able to be recovered with a file recovery app like   SubrosaSoft FileSalvage.  It will run in demo mode so you can see if it can recover your photos before having to purchase it. Use the iMac as little as possible till them so as not to overwrite them.
If it's set to a managed library launch iPhoto with the Option+Command keys held down and rebuild the library's databse file.
What verson of iPhoto and system are you running?

  • HT4859 Help!  My whole family shares one apple id and my daughter deleted all of our contacts from her phone, unknowingly deleting them from ours too!  I need to find out how to restore an archived copy.

Help!  My whole family shares one apple ID and one of us deleted a large amount of contacts from our phone, not realizing that they would be deleted from all of our devices.  Is it at all possible to restore an archive of our contacts?  Is there such a thing?

icloud is designed so that only one user uses it to keep his/her devices in sync.  Problems such as yours occur when multiple users use the same account - icloud is not designed for that.
If a user is using your account, they should get their own account and disconnect from your account.
To create a new icloud account, go to
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
Once they have a new account, they should go to Settings>icloud, scroll to bottom of screen and tap Delete Account.  This only disconnects the device from that account, no data is lost on icloud.  Then enter the account ID that you want to use.
Note that an ID used for iCloud does not have to be the same ID used for iTunes.  You can all keep the same iTunes store Apple ID to share purchases, but for iCloud, use different IDs.

  • How do i delete all mail settings for an exchange account

I have an exchange account that is somehow wrong.  By wrong I mean corrupted to the point that it will not login to the exchange server, and then after too many attempts it locks me out of the exchange account.  Apple mail and MS Exchange.

Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility has the option to repair permissions, which should be given at least 2 hours to finish. Sometimes this fixes launching issues with Mail.
Applications -> Utilities -> Keychain Access lets you delete mail passwords which will be obvious what they are from the Keychain program. You may simply be able to repair the keychain which that program has the option of doing to fix your problem with Mail.
Users -> yourname -> Library -> Mail and Mail Downloads folders store all your locally stored e-mail.
    Users -> yourname -> Library -> Preferences -> com.apple.mail.plist
stores all the account setting information (not the actual mail) so you have to re-establish the account.
