An corrupted EFTFile1.sparseimage has appeared on my iMac but cannot deleted

Hello guys! I need real hands-on practical help here, please.
I have already asked for help in here but didn't manage to get clear step by step help. Only got confusing redirection to other posts and very technical advice which really confuses me.
First of all, I have an iMac8,1 with Snow Leopard 10.6.7. Memory 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, and before the problem occured I had about 260-270 of free GB out of more than 300 GB.
I have discovered that my recycling bin contained a folder Recovered Files with a file EFTFile1.sparseimage. I only noticed it when I tried to Secure Empty the  Trash after running the tool Secure Delete Free Space from Internet Cleanup by SmithMicro (I don't know if this might be the cause of the problem).
When I got to deleting stuff from the Trush I noticed it was taking too long, so I decided to transfer the various files out of the trush and delete them individually. When I reached the EFTFile1.sparseimage I discovered this was about 261 GB in size - when I tried opening it, it said the following:
The following disk images couldn't be opened. Reason: corrupt image
After reading some online forums, I understand now that by deleting this sparseimage file I should be able to recover the free space. Some people suggested to use Terminal. Their instructions have been very confusing and also when I attempted once in Terminal, before submitting anything, a warning said I might loose important files. So, I stayed well away!!!
I want to stress, this EFTFile1.sparseimage isn't something I created (some forums have mentioned the possibility that some people may have done that for other purposes). The file appeared on my mac by itself. I guess, after using the SmithMicro free space delete?!
If anyone has the patience and knows of a real solution for this problem, I would greatly appreciate your help.
Cheers guys!

This is just a guess, but that file may be part of the mechanism that Internet Cleanup uses to erase the free space.  It might allocate a very large file, write erase patterns to that file, then (if allowed to complete), delete that file.  Since you didn't let it complete, that file remained.
To delete that file in a Terminal session, launch Terminal, then type this command, including a trailing space, without pressing the <return> key:
sudo rm -i
Then open the trash and drag that sparseimage file into the Terminal window.  You should now see the full path of that file following the space after the "-i" switch.  Now switch to the Terminal window and press <return>.  First you'll be prompted for your administrative password.  Type it and press <return>.  Next you'll be asked if you want to delete the sparseimage file.  Verify that it's the right file, then press <return>.  That should do it.
To terminal the Terminal session gracefully, type "exit" (without the quotes), press <return>, then quit Terminal.

This can be done from Single User Mode. You're going to need a little nerve though since everything is command line based.
    1) Enter Single User Mode by restarting and holding down Command+S on the keyboard. A whole bunch of UNIX stuff will go by on the screen in white text on a black background. When it's done, the command prompt will be sitting at:
    :/root#
    2) Above that, you'll see that it tells you to enter two commands. Run this one first by typing it in and pressing enter:
    /sbin/fsck/ -fy
This does a system file check. A good thing to do in your case as it may be damaged. It could take a while. When it's done, you'll be back at the :/root# prompt.
    3) Enter the second command and press enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    4) Type the following at the prompt:
    cd /Users/name/Desktop
Where it says "name" above, the short name of your user account goes there. If you're not sure what it is, first type:
    cd /Users
    Then type:
    ls
That's a lower case L, not a one. It stands for "list". You'll get a listing of all files and folders in the Users folder. So if your short account name is diane, then the command will be:
    cd /Users/diane/Desktop
After entering that command, the prompt should read:
    :Desktop root#
    Type:
    rm *.jpg
Be very careful to type is exactly as shown. rm followed by a space, then *.jpg. Press enter and all files ending in .jpg will be deleted from the Desktop folder. With 450,000 of them, you could be waiting a while for the prompt to come back.
    Type:
    exit
and press enter to boot back into OS X.

That sounds like a settings issue to me. Check with your IT depatment to make sure you have it configured properly.

    Hi Tinab127,
The file may have been moved or deleted. For this issue, we will need to refer to the following article:

  • Cannot Wi-Fi Sync iPad; Appears to see iMac but iMac does not see the iPad

Like many, I have upgraded my iPad (1st Gen) to iOS 5 and for the most part, it's been an easy transistion to learn the new features. However, I've not been able to overcome a Wi-Fi Sync issue.
The iPad does recognize that it can Wi-Fi Sync with my iMac.
When it was connected via cable, I had already selected the "Sync with this [iOS device] over Wi-Fi" Option in iTunes then clicked "Apply."
Under Settings > General > iTunes Sync on my iPad, the "Sync Now" button is grey when I connect to an alternate Wi-Fi network in our house, but when I am on the same Wi-Fi network as my computer, through an Apple Airport Extreme Basestation, the "Sync Now" button becomes actively black as it if recognizes my iMac, but it does not show up under iTunes to sync.
I connected the iPad to an alternate computer which is linked to iPhone running iOS 5 on the alternate Wi-Fi Network I spoke of earlier and through which we succesfully Wi-Fi Synced, but when my iPad was linked to this same computer (connected first by cable to enable "Sync with this [iOS device] over Wi-Fi" Option in iTunes first, it still would not show my iPad. And this time, not even my iPad would see the computer when on the same network, yet I could also see the iPhone mentioned which was upstairs.
I have tried following the steps in this Help Page (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4062) but without any change. The only thing I haven't followed to the letter is restarting my router. I did tell my Airport Basestation to restart via the Airport Utility.
Has anyone else yet experienced this issue and been able to resolve it? Please share any insight.

When one device can't see another via Bonjour, it suggests a problem with how the network or the devices are handling "multicast" packets. Handling multicasts is tricky on Wi-Fi. Is there any way you can temporarily plug the iMac into the LAN port of the base station via an Ethernet cable, and try the sync that way? If that works, then it's a clear indication of multicast problems on your network.
Apple is usually very good about making sure multicasts work reliably on AirPort base stations and all Macs and iOS client devices. It would be interesting to know which generation of AirPort Extreme you have, what firmware version you're running on it, exactly which wireless security mode you're using (for instance, WPA2 "mixed mode", where both WPA2-style AES-CCMP and original WPA-style TKIP encryption are available, is trickier for multicasts because multicasts have to use a different cipher and key. "WEP TSN" is also tricky for similar reasons). Oh, and what you have your "multicast rate" set to on your base station.

  • My macbook pro osx 10.9.4 has adware and applications that I cannot delete. How do I clean this problem?

I would like to learn how to clean out the applications I'm not using and the adware that I have accrued on this laptop. It's running slowly and gets ads. It is just under 3 years old. I checked and some how the firewall has been down on it. Any troubleshooting?

I'm running Clamx right now and it's about a quarter done. It's found a Geneio adware but I'm going to let it finish. Is it possible that Adware medic missed parts?
Most likely, ClamXav has found the installer or something like that. AdwareMedic only removes installed items, not things like the installer.
I'm no longer seeing ads but my Memory is still being taken up quite a bit. Not sure if related but when I go to the Macintosh HD window and verify disk it still will not let me repair the disk.
    None of that is adware-related.
I'm unclear on what you mean when you say your "memory is still being taken up" - are you referring to RAM (memory) or hard drive space (storage)? What specific behavior are you seeing?
As for not being able to repair the disk, you can't do that unless you have started up from a different system, like the recovery partition. See:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DU6.html
If you have done that and are getting an error message when you try to repair the disk, what is the exact wording of the message?

  • Folders appearing in IMAP/Mail.app - cannot delete

I've had several odd mailboxes/folders appear in one of my IMAP accounts over the last 6 months or so. They appear only in Mail.app. If I log into the browser-based email client for that account, these mailboxes/folders are not visible. The name of each begins with "nfs" and is followed by various sorts of junk, e.g.:
    nfs00000000d809d85c000021bd
    nfs00000000d8602f56000010a1
    nfsd8bd59e5000075b7
None of the mailboxes have any messages in them. I wouldn't care too much except that they take up a line each on the left-hand pane of Mail.app, pushing mailboxes I want to see down and off-screen.
If I right-click/control-click on one and choose "Delete Folder," I get the following error message:
"The IMAP command 'DELETE' failed with server error: Mailbox does not exist or must be subscribed to.."
I've done a lot of searching online and have found no solutions to this problem. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    EH

Problem may have been on the server. The folders did show up there, where they caused some problems with the browser-based email client, making it impossible for me to manage my folders there. Tech support for my server managed to locate and delete them. Still not sure how/why they appeared in the first place.
I'm going to mark this question as answered, though I still don't know for sure where the problem arose (Mail.app vs. server weirdness).

    Hello missmoneypenny,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see that you are unable to print over a wireless network with the Officejet 4620 with a Windows Vista computer. When you try to print, what happens? Is there an error, is the printer not found, does the software not install, etc?
Have you tried the Print and Scan Dr, if not, run it and let me know the results.

  • My bluetooth has discovered my speakers but cannot connect till I take the headphones out, but there are no headphones connected what can i do

My Imac has discovered my wireless speakers but cannot connect because it ask me to remove my headphones which are not connected, can any one help?

Will you're iMac play music through the internal speakers or does it give you the same error?
I ask because most (all?) Macs these days use a combo optical analog jack for headphones which means that there's a tiny switch inside that can get stuck. I've never heard of a problem just like yours (which could be a bluetooth issue) but I have had similar issues on my wife's Macbook.
If you get the same error, or can't play music out of the internal speakers then try inserting re-inserting a headphone plug a few times. If you do a few Google searches you can find additional info.
