"an error occurred when trying to change modules"

When I switch repeatedly between Library and Develop with the R and E keys, I always sooner or later run into a problem where nothing happens when I press R. Really that should go the Develop module and enter crop mode -- what I'm usually trying to do, when this happens, is crop a bunch of photos. So I'll be using Library mode to identify the photos that need cropping, stepping through photos with the arrow keys, then when I find one that I want to crop, I press R, enter develop+crop mode, crop the photo, press E to return to library+loupe view, and continue.
Sometimes this works 10 times, sometimes it only works twice, but always, relatively soon, when I press R, "nothing" will happen. Actually what's happening is an error dialog appears saying "an error occurred when trying to change modules", then the error dialog immediately disappears before I can read it. I know what it says, because if I click the Develop module with the mouse, I get the same message but it sticks around until I press OK.
Once this happens, I'm entirely unable to use the Develop module until I quit the program. I had to quit and restart LR about 20 times during an hour of working with it last night, and this morning, in the first 15 minutes, I'm already on the 3rd restart.
Anyone else see this?
Details: LR 1.1 on Mac OS 10.4.10, 4-core Mac Pro, images are a mix of JPG from a pocket camera and NEF from a Nikon D40. I don't think it is related to the specific images, as it strikes apparently at random, and after exit and restart, I can crop that same photo, but a different one will eventually cause the same problem again.

Sean, thanks for the Return key tip. I knew about that at one point, but lately I was trying to use Enter (the one on the numeric keypad, at the very lower right corner of the keyboard, which is really easy to hit with my thumb even when my hand is on the mouse! And Enter doesn't invoke the crop, so I forgot that Return did). That is a better way.
I don't see the RE problem on my MacBook, only on my desktop computer, and that one is also experiencing other flakiness (
metamatt, "missing text / thumbnails / many Lightroom UI elements disappeared" #, 18 Aug 2007 3:08 pm) so I think I'm going to try a complete reinstall there.

  • Lr 2.2 broken - an error occurred when trying to change modules

I get the message "an error occurred when trying to change modules when I try to go into library mode. quit and restart didn't help. Catalog verified as okay. Worked before update.

Deleting preferences did not help. I also tried creating a new lightroom catalog, and can navigate around it fine. However, if I do something like change to Library in the new catalog and then open my useful catalog, I immediately get the error changing modules message. I tried reimporting my useful catalog, which also did not work. My understanding is that this error is some kind of catch all which could indicate any number of different issues - is there a way for me to roll back to 2.1? Is there a reason that so many people are having an issue with this upgrade (there are posts in other forums and blogs about people having this same issue after upgrading).

  • Cannot open any of my Lightroom catalogs. "Error occurred when trying to change modules."

Bought a new 2013 Mac Pro and did a new install of Photoshop and Lightroom. Then physically moved my data drives over from Mac Pro (10.8.6), but LR won’t open any of the existing catalogs on the new computer (10.9.5). Followed steps 1-5 at http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/error-changing-modules-lightroom.html
Cannot do step #6 (no access to more than one user at a time).

LR is also unable to open a small LR catalog it created on the internal Macintoch HD SSD, back when this copy of LR was installed.
How and where did you create that small catalog? Sorry for the question, but you do have licensed version of LR 5 and you only use it in your old computer? In other words, you do not have a second copy installed on a laptop, do you?
If you have a licensed version and have only install it in your old computer and you cannot create a brand new catalog on the SSD with the enclosure disconnected (forget about the catalog already on the SSD drive), it is likely to be the installation. If this the case, try downloading the 5.7.1 and reinstall (Adobe - Lightroom : For Macintosh : Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1). I would recommend to do the reinstall with the enclosure disconnected, after it is done check if you can create a catalog on the local drive, if you ca connect the enclosure.

  • Another "An error occurred when attempting to change modules" error

    Hello all:
After using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom on Mac OSX trouble free for the past 6 months, I opened up Lightroom today and received the following error: "An error occurred when attempting to change modules." I had not made any changes in between when it worked normally and when the error started to occur. I beleive the last thing I did before this error occurred was to go into the Print Module.
Other information--I keep all my RAW .NEF files on an external Firewire (800) 750 GB drive. This is on Mac OS X 10.5 running Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.3 and also with 1.4.1. I'm running an iMac 20" with dual-core 2.2 Ghz Intel processors and 4 GB of RAM. I have around 25k images total.
When I noticed this problem, I was on Lightroom 1.3. I immediately upgraded to 1.4.1, which did not solve the problem. I have also tried many suggestions in the forums including uninstalling the application and removing the .plist file.
I thought I had come up with a solution by creating a new catalog, then importing the former into it. While this seems to work immediately after the import process, as soon as I close it, the problem manifests itself again.
More details that may or (likely) may not help:
    - Going to the Develop and Print Modules gives me no problems. However, when I click on Library, Slideshow, or Web, I see the error.
    - I upgraded my Mac to the latest patch level after observing this error to no avail.
So it looks like my choices are to create a new file and reimport every single time, or lose all of the work I've done for the past 6 months on thousands of images.
Can anyone please help???? I promise to post the solution when we fix this darn thing so others may benefit. I'd be happy to run through any troubleshooting that y'all would suggest outside of switching to a Canon.
    Thanks!!!!
    Matt

I'd first check for the existence of a file ending in .lock, which should be present when LR is in use, but if it exists when LR is quit, it can cause problems, and should be deleted.
    Please post back your results.

  • An error occurred when attempting to change modules Lightroom 5 CC

I've seen other users pose this question but haven't seen any solutions that work for me.  I get the error: "An error occurred when attempting to change modules" when I open up Lightroom 5 on one user, but on another user it opens up fine.  I've tried moving and trashing preferences, uninstalling and reinstalling the program.  It's the same whether I open an existing catalog or try to open Lightroom while creating a new project.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  This occured after updating to Mavericks on a 2011 iMac.  All other Creative Cloud apps seem to have installed just fine.

  • An error occurred when attempting to change modules.

Loaded LR on my iMac, tried to copy & use a catalogue from W7 P/C. Now get "An error occurred when attempting to change modules."  when opening LR. Tried a variety of on-line suggestions, HELP. NB too much hassle with all the other apps to start a new user with such as Adobe and Microsoft.
    George

Hi, I¹ve been through it again to ensure I¹ve not forgot things. Completely
removed Lightroom and all files I can find, etc and reloaded. Some tedious
result. Step 6 is too time consuming at the moment for me, too many things
on the go since I¹m about to go on holiday and on return I shall need
Lightroom on this iMac. Any clues? This iMac had Mavericks from new,
uploaded to Yosemite and then loaded Photoshop CC, Lightroom etc and get
    this damned problem.
Reading around the web I¹m not the only one with this issue, to suggest a
new user a/c is a soft option without resolving the issue.
I hope an expert from Adobe can resolve this,
Regards, George (retired IT Manager and IT Systems Project Manager)

  • 2011 iMac: An error occurred when attempting to change modules

    Hello,
Just got a new 2011 iMac.  Installing both 3.4 and 3.3, after completely removing all data, constantly results in "
An error occurred when attempting to change modules"
I've tried removing the .plist as others have suggested, but that has not worked.
    Any advice would be great.

    FIXED
    I did two things:
    1.  I deleted the files for "Portraiture for Lightroom".
    2.  Installed on a different computer and copied the "Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom" and ".../Camera Raw" directories.
    After reinstalling, it worked.

  • 1.3 Update Error "An error occurred when attempting to change modules"

    Good evening,
Recently updated to 1.3, and now, when starting, Lightroom won't open up a catalog. When I go t manually do this (File-Open), I get this error:
An error occurred when attempting to change modules
Sometimes, I can get the program to display, but it is blank (no photos) and when I select a different module, I get the same error code.
    I have tried:
    - Deleting preferences
    - Opening a backup file
    Neither one works.
Any ideas? We can do nothing at this point with Lightroom.
    Many thanks,
    Brett
