An error occurred while backing up this iPhone (-402653081). Would you like to continue to update this iPhone?

I don't understand this error. I have gotten it at least seven different times while trying to update to iOS 5.0. Can anyone help me? It asks if I want to continue, but says that if I do all data will be lost.
An error occurred while backing up this iPhone (-402653081). Would you like to continue to update this iPhone?

I solved my issue.
She had a ton of photos & videos on her phone. I manually moved those off to the phone and on to the computer.
I went into iTunes preferences/devices and deleted all but one backup of her phone (kept the latest one just incase). Then I did my own backup by right-clicking the phone in iTunes, on the left side.
Then I selected the update, let it fail and proceeded to update it knowing it was going to erase ALL data. Once it was done restoring, and updating to i0S5, I restored from backup successfully.
Everything was there, Aps, Contacts etc.
Hope this helps someone.

It's likely that your backup is corrupt. Try deleting the backup, then right click on the name of the phone in iTunes and choose "back up". To delete go to iTunes Preferences, Devices tab. Highlight and delete the most recent backup. Note that sometimes deleting this way leaves some garbage around that can still interfere with a new backup, so you should verify that the backup folder is empty.

This is the correct steps to solve this problem:
    1. Cancel the update (with the backing up error, of course)
    2. Do a manual backup
    3. Do a manual restore (your password to unlock your backup file is your AppleID password, not your IPhone keypad password)
    4. Now Update your phone. This time the backup should work.
    5. After it is updated, it will automatically restore, if you choose to restore not to set up a new phone.
And yes, copy all your photos manually. Your backup probabally won't include photos.
If this still doesn't work, try to stop your anti-virus software.

Trying to update the software on my iphone 4.  It stops and says, "An error occurred while backing up this iphone.  -43.  Would you like to continue?  Continuing will result in the loss of content..."   What should I do?

The first thing you need to do is (in the left side of iTunes, under devices) right click on your phone, and do a manual back up. As long as that works, this should work for you. After you back it up, go to your phone in iTunes, and do a "Restore". Click the option to restore and update. When it is done with the update, it will ask you if you want to set your phone up as a new phone, or restore from the last back up. Restore it, and after another restart, and a sync, you will have your updated phone without loosing your information.

  • "An error occurred while backing up this Iphone (-50)"

    Hello all,
I've downloaded IOS4 and am trying to upgrade by 3G, but when I hit the upgrade button, I'm told repeatedly that there's an error backing up the Iphone (-50). I've reset the Iphone, turned off my firewall, rebooted, but I get the same message.
The thing is, I remember several months ago that my syncing was taking an hour every time because of the back ups. (I keep a large amount of data in a third party app.) I came here and learned how to prevent my 3G from backing up every sync, and my syncs have gone really fast since then. The problem is that I've forgotten what I did or how to change the settings. If I right-click "Iphone" under "Devices" in Itunes, I don't get any option to create a backup, nor can I find any "backup" command anywhere in Itunes (latest version).
I can't even figure out where to go (assuming there is a place to go) to check when my Iphone was last backed up. Itunes is giving me the option to go ahead and update without a backup, but I don't want to do that until I at least know when was the last time my Iphone was backed up.
Can anyone tell me (a) where to go to check my backup history, and (b) how to get my phone to back up, assuming that it's not doing so? Thanks!

The same thing happens to me.
I've tried two times to upgrade to iPhone OS 4.0, leaving the phone offline and syncing for 10 hours... the backup proceeds sluggish and about 5% it stops with the message:
"An error occurred while backing up this Iphone (-50)
Would you like to continue to update this iPhone without backup?
CONTINUING WITHOUT BACKUP WILL RESULT IN THE LOSS OF ALL CONTENT"
If I try to Continue another message says:
"The iPhone could not be updated because the firmware file was corrupt. Disconnect and reconnect, then try again."
I've never even tried to hack or jailbreak my iPhone, and everything was normal since I try to upgrade to OS 4.0
    This is my equipment:
    - iPhone 3G 16GB (14.64 full), sw 3.1.3
    - iTunes 9.2 (61) running on Snow Leopard 10.6.2

  • An error occurred while backing up this iPad (-43)  iOS5 update

While updating to iOS5 the process stops and error message  "An error occurred while backing up this iPad (-43), would you like to continue to update this iPad?  Continuing will result in the loss of all contents on this iPad"
If i select no and manualy do a backup and sync it works fine ... so a back up is there. Its the new update/ itunes process that is failing???
    Anyone else having this problem?

So you used your own manual back up  after updating , and that worked?
Im a bit gun shy to try as i dont want to lose my data

  • An error occurred while backing up this iPhone (0xE800002E).

I know this question has been asked for a long time and I googled it to death but not sure if the fixes apply to my situation plus most replies were from 2008! I am trying to update my iphone 4 to IOS 5 and have done the normal sync and updates and clearing out some trash from itunes to ready my phone - that all seems to go just fine. Now the problem is when I try to update, it will start out backing up the phone and after awhile i get this error
"An error occurred while backing up this iPhone (0xE800002E). Would you like to continue to update this iPhone? Continuing will result in the loss of all contents on this iPhone."
From what I read this is an error due to an app, but which app i have no idea - I have about 300 on my phone! I'm not sure if i should continue and then restore. I guess basically I'm looking fo rthe best advice as to how to proceed. I'm somewhat iphone proficient, but please be 'simple' in your responses as I"m 40 weeks preggo so concenttrating is no easy task
    thanks!

I hadn't read that article, so am i to assume that the IOS5 install will erase everything anyways... so if I've sycned my iphone already and then continue with the update AND hit continue losing all contents it 'shouldn't' matter?
"An error occurred while backing up this iPhone (0xE800002E). Would you like to continue to update this iPhone? Continuing will result in the loss of all contents on this iPhone."
i have not seen the window they showed there in the article.

  • An error occurred while backing up this iPod (-120)

I have an iPod Touch 2G that I'm trying to upgrade to iOS 4. Every time I try, I get the message:
*An error occurred while backing up this iPod (-120).*
*Would you like to continue to update this iPod without*
    backup?
Coninuing without backup will result in the loss of all contents on
    this iPod.
Now, I don't want to lose all the contents so how do I fix it so the backup doesn't fail?

    Its not any hardware issues
i have 1395GB free on my harddrive and it wont backup or transfer anything from my ipod.
Its more of a software issue
once you attempt atleast once to install iOS4 a bunch of data will be left behind from the install even if it fails. Itunes is very buggy and the iOS4 update is glitchy specially with ipods. I have tries twice and itunes really isnt cooperating with my ipod
its constantly freezing my ipod with that little spinning circle.
So i myself am also waiting for a later release/update of iOS4 and itunes until ill update my ipod
this release isnt stable or safe at the moment, so id recommend you also wait a week or two or until a few days after apple releases their iphone 4 since there will be lots of traffic blocking their servers. I downloaded and saved the 4.0 os update to flashdrive just incase so i wont hve to download it again :]. but yea
id say do a factory restore to 3.0 or 3.1.x or if you had it earlier than 3.0 go to 2.0? Then update to 3.0
rhen update to 4.0 instead of installing 4.0 with apps an stuff cluttering the device install. If you can, email all your photos or whatever you need to yourself, and write down all your songs and apps And bookmarks, then erase eerything and install os4 then reinstall all your apps and music and pictures.
But my final advice would be to just wait it out. When 2.0 and 3.0 were released they messed up many ipods by messing up their wifi and firmware, and later on with the later updates it could not be fixed, so id say first install a good release and not just regular 4.0.0 id say wait atleast until 4.0.1 and a itunes update
this should fix everything, the problem is that they rushe it into production and ddnt test enough apparently.
