An external drive for my MacBook 13-inch Aluminium (Late 2008)

My 250GB x 2.4GHz MacBook with 2GB RAM now only has 87 GB available. I'm sure that the main reason for this is the 15,000 + images I have saved in iPhoto. Of course, it's pretty slow to do anything at all these days, too, so I'm thinking I'll take advantage of a few days off to 'renovate' my MacBook.
I would be very grateful if anyone could advise whether my thinking is correct or a bit wrong ....
First, I would like to get an External Hard Drive (Macpower SK-3500 S2 eSATA/USB2.0 - 1.5TB) and move ALL my images from my MacBook to this external drive. I would also like to partition this external drive so that I could use it as an additional backup drive (in addition to my 500GB Time Capsule).
I would then like to do an 'Erase and Install' and update my OS to 10.6. The reason for the 'Erase and Install' is because I (stupidly, because I didn't know what I was doing) chose to format my drive as Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) which causes me all sorts of problems whenever I have to access any Adobe created documents because it simply refuses to print them (Adobe says that it doesn't support any Case-sensitive formatted drives).
So, if I free up as much disk space as possible by putting all my images and, perhaps, all my iTunes music on the external drive then re-format my drive to Mac OS Extended, Journaled and install OS X 10.6 should my MacBook become a snappy MacBook once more or is it doomed to be slow for the rest of its life???
Any suggestions would be very gratefully received.
Cheers

You should increase the size of your memory (aka memory). I upgraded to 4 GB. Your MacBook model (same as mine) was tested and found to hold up to 6GB of memory.
I recommend this upgrade before upgrading anything else. I highly recommend http://www.macsales.com/ for all purchases. You should plan on spending around $50 for 4Gb (2x2GB) or $100 for 6GB (1x4GB, 1x2GB). The more memory you have, the faster the laptop will be.
Upgrading hard drive can only speed up the MacBook if you buy a hard drive with a higher number of RPM than your current hard drive, such as going from a 5400RPM to a 7200RPM. The fastest hard drive you will find will be a SSD (solid state drive), but they are much more expensive per GB than typical hard drives because SSD's use flash memory. The Crucial RealSSD C300 256GB costs about $600, for example.
Before any purchases, check to see what hardware is compatible with your Macbook, then read reviews of this type of product that is within your price range.
FYI: The storage (aka hard drive) and memory are the only upgradable features on this MacBook.

How to I find a compatible, more powerful hard drive for my macbook 13 inch late 2008?

There are many sources for compatible 2.5" laptop SATA interface hard drives and SSD's.
I've used Other World Computing (www.macsales.com) for a number of upgrades, and highly recommend them if you're in the US. OWC also posts helpful videos on YouTube showing step by step removal and installation instructions and the tools required for most Mac models. If your old drive is still functioning, but you're simply running out of space, you might also consider purchasing an upgrade kit that includes an external 2.5" drive enclosure with USB interface. Then you first install the new drive in the external enclosure and 'clone' the contents of old drive to it, then swap the old drive for the new one, and use the old drive in the external enclosure as a backup drive, to test new software and OS upgrades, or to store video, photos, and audio.

  • Can I make an iBook hard drive into an external drive for a MacBook?

    Hi,
After 5 years my beloved G3 iBook has died. The diagnosis is a failed logic board. I am purchasing a MacBook, assuming the iBook drive is still OK; can I extract it from the iBook and build it into a suitable case so it becomes an external drive for my new computer? Will I have worry about any software clashes between the two drives.
As always your advice will be treasured,
    Thanks

No, it will just be an external drive like any other.

  • MacBook 13-inch Aluminum (Late 2008) to Sony Bravia KDL-40W5800

    Hello forum,
I am looking to buy a Sony Bravia KDL-40W5800 (Sony link, Amazon link) in the near future. I am going to be using it to play PS3, watch television and DVDs/Blu-Rays, but also I would like to be able to connect my MacBook to it if I wish to. I have been reading the forum and have come across numerous users that have problems connecting their MacBook to their HD-TVs.
    So my questions are:
What adapter cables do I need to connect the two devices (I already own the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter, if that's any help) correctly?
Is the Sony Bravia KDL-40W5800 compatible with the MacBook and does anyone have any experience with the TV itself? If so, I would be grateful for any kind of feedback.
    Thank you in advance,
    XtremeFluX

    Hi,
I have been using my macbook (late 2008 2.4 ghz) with my Sony Bravia (KDL 26S2030) for about a year now. I use Mini Display port to VGA and then into my PC input. I am perfectly happy with the picture quality (although you may want to fiddle with you custom settings) and I have never had any issues.
When I was looking originally I came across tons of people who had problems with connecting the Macbook to their monitors. However there was a patch that came out (maybe last march) and so I bought my equipment after that and the mac always connects properly (although be sure to turn your TV on before to put the mini display port in). You will need to calibrate it and that will be that.
I hope that helps a bit.

I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.
Holler if you need specifics on how to do each. This was just an executive summary.

Yes, having an external HD is necessary for data backups and keeping large media files for packing around etc.
    you need data redundancy.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.

As long as they're formatted HFS+, yes.  Be sure there's enough room, though -- Time Machine needs considerably more room than the data it's backing-up.  See #1 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
