An iMac, 2 PCs, 2 printers, an AirPort Extreme & a partridge in a pear tree

This as probably been answered somewhere else. Call me lazy for not looking. Anyway...
I've got an new iMac, 2 peecees, 2 USB printers, a DSL modem and a LinkSys router. I want to introduce an AirPort Extreme unit to wirelessly connect the iMac, and maybe someday a iBook or Powerbook, into my home network. I would also want the printers hooked into the USB port on the AirPort. Which setup would work better:

Doesn't a router also act like a hub/switch?Many routers have a built-in switch to allow you to connect multiple Ethernet devices. However a router provides NAT and DHCP services, etc. that a switch does not.
The AEBS is a router. Adding another router complicates the network needlessly. You could make it work but you would have to configure the Linksys so that the DHCP server is disabled. Then connect everything (including AEBS) to the LAN side of the Linksys.

    I believe it is because Classic does not interface with Bonjour which is used to run the wireless printing connections.
    Simply an observation. Someone please correct me if Im wrong.

    Is it possible to connect two printers to the one Airport Extreme with a USB hub (not the power-over-ethernet version)? I want to use a Canon iP5200 and a Dymo Label Writer 310, without repeatedly exchanging USB cables or switching on both computers at the same time.

  • Weird lost access to iMac's desktop via Airport Extreme wireless LAN

    This is weird and complicated. I'll try to keep it simple.
    1. Two computers on a wireless LAN via Airport Extreme: G4 Powerbook and 20" G5 iMac. The LAN has worked flawlessly and seamlessly for several years, and except for this ONE anomaly, still does.
    2. When logged-in to the iMac from the Powerbook, all its files and contents show up normally in it's networked-drive window in Finder,
    3. EXCEPT the desktop. And I mean the real desktop which is under my ID under USERS.
    4. Searching the Powerbook from the iMac, however, works just fine and shows all of the Powerbook's contents.
    Repairs of Permissions on both computers have accomplished nothing.
    There is one other peculiar symptom: there was a .wmv movie file sent me by a friend, and I had a copy of it on the desktops of both computers. It sat there, showed up and ran just fine, until one day something curious happened:
    The file would show up in the column-view Finder window of the iMac's desktop when I opened it from the Finder Window, but would, after about a second, disappear!
    If I try to import, on the Powerbook, some random file into the iMac's Desktop folder, it appears for a brief second and then the folder once again displays as empty.
    I have trashed that wmv file, and yet sometimes its name blinks up on the iMac's desktop list (that is, again, the column view display in the Finder window).
    This is profoundly weird.
    Oh, and there's nothing changed or weird about the SHARING settings. Personal File Sharing is enabled on both computers, as is Printer Sharing, and itunes music sharing is also enabled. All of these continue to work just fine. Firewall is enabled, but always has been.

    Well, when in doubt try all the obvious things FIRST!
    I rank Disk Utility from the install disk, did a disk repair, and, well, Bob's your uncle, and all is fine again. Apparently that ghost file screwed up the count of files (I'm not sure what that means, but it seems consistent with a file that would materialize and then disappear, and screw up display of a folder's contents - the folder it was lurking-in invisibly.
    Very peculiar, none the less.

  • IMac G5 PPC without Airport Extreme Card.... Can install one?

    I bought a 20" iMac G5 in November 2004 and it didn't come with a wireless card. Can I buy an Airport Extreme card from Apple and install it? I've been searching these forums and there seems to be a question of whether there's already an antenna in there to connect to. Would appreciate anyone's advice and guidance.
    Also, is their a USB dongle WiFi receiver that works with this iMac? Just wondering if that may be a better option?

    Yes you can purchase and install the AirPort Extreme card in your iMac G5.

    I have an iMac G5 1.8GHz purchased on March 2, 2005. When I go to the Apple Store page for the Airport Extreme Card (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=C16 8B68E&fnode=home/shopmac/mac_accessories/airportwireless&nplm=M8881LL/A) it says:
    "This AirPort Extreme Card is not compatible with the Mac Pro or the Power Mac G5 Dual and Power Mac G5 Quad computers introduced in October 2005."
    Since my computer is a model prior to this, I'm wondering whether it is compatible with the Extreme card or not. How do I find out whether I can install an Airport Extreme Card in this model?
    And second question, if I can't use an Airport Extreme Card, where can I find an old regular Airport Card that Apple no longer makes/sells?

  • IMac won't detect airport extreme card

    i just bought an airport extreme card for my 1.25 GHz G4 iMac. i have installed the card in my computer, but for some reason my computer hasn't detected the card.
    i read some suggestions in other discussions, and have tried almost everything. i have reset my PRAM and run the apple hardware test. the card still has not been detected. i have also installed the latest software update for airport. still nothing. someone also suggested resetting the PMU, but i read up on that and don't see how that would help with an airport extreme card.
    i'm wondering if maybe i didn't do a good job of installing the card. it seems easy enough, but after i inserted the card and attached the antennae, the card felt sort of loose in the slot. i don't know if it's supposed to be a tight fit or not. i pushed the card in until it go any father, but i didn't want to push it too hard for fear of breaking something.
    any suggestions?

  • IMac Won't Recognize Airport Extreme

    I purchased an Airport Extreme from the local Apple store and set it up according to directions, but my iMac doesn't see it.
    I believe that there is a problem with my Airport card inside my Mac.
    What I have tried to fix this:
    First thing I did was get the latest version of Airport Utility. (I now have 5.5.2)
    Next I plugged the ethernet cable directly from my Airport Extreme into my iMac.
    Airport Utility immediately recognized the base station and I was able to configure it with a device ID and password.
    After plugging the base station back into my DSL router, Airport Utility still couldn't find it. (The Extreme is about two feet from the computer with a clear line of sight.)
    Both my iPad and iPhone "see" the Airport Extreme and are accessing the internet perfectly using it.
    My next attempt to fix things was to reload OS X into my iMac. This and the updates took a couple of hours, but I got the same results.
    I'm pretty sure there is an actual WiFi card in my computer. This is what my System Profiler says under Airport:

    In the future if you have to use an Ethernet cable to configure your AirPort Extreme, it would be better to use a second cable to connect your Mac to one of the Extreme's LAN ports. Then the configuration could be completed using the final connections.
    It might help to reset the connection settings on your Mac using these steps one at a time until it works again:
    1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
    2) Try to select your Wi-Fi network from the AirPort menu.
    3) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
    4) In the same panel as (2), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
    5) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".
    6) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( not <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
    They may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try.

  • Multiple Printers on Airport Extreme POE

    I have 2 Epson 1280 printers connected to an Airport Extreme POE through a USB hub. The Airport only sees one printer. I renamed it "Right" and unplugged it. The other printer Shows and I renamed it "Left". Which ever printer is closer to the airport on the hub is displayed in the configuration utility. Firmware is 5.6 and utility is 4.2. Any suggestions or thoughts are appreciated.

    This seems to be a limitation of the current Airport firmware - you cannot connect two printers of exactly the same make/model since only one will be "seen".

    Thank-you for the prompt response. I have already gone to the Network setting (right after posting). It shows the network name with 'none' under security. It does not give me the option of 'Apply Now' but rather 'Assist Me' going through that process has not been successful.

    There is an article floating around the web of
    removing the 2 antennae extreme card from a Mac Pro
    and installing it in a MacBook to get 802.11n
    connectability, but the connection isn't reported to
    be any better or faster.
    Also, everything on the network must be 802.11n to
    get the n speeds. A mixed network is slower.
    I just took the Airport Extreme 802.11n module out of my Mac Pro and installed in my CoreDuo MacBook Pro. After applying the enabler patch off the CD, my network connection speeds report as 270mb connecting to a wide-band N-only Airport Extreme Base Station.
    Performance boost on initial file transfer speeds are significant. A 203mb test file took 6+ minutes on my G-only network. The same file, on the N-only network took 49 seconds.
    I would call that both better and faster.
    Of course for those looking to use it on the mixed B/G/N networks to surf the web aren't going to notice any difference. I think a lot of people forget that regardless of their wireless network speed, even on the fastest of home broadband connections they're not going to be getting more than 8mbs coming into the WAN side of the network if they're on fiber cable. A DSL connection might get 2mbs. The internet itself for most will be a significant bottleneck for most users.
    If you're doing a lot of transfers of large files on your internal LAN, the performance is worth the $49 part.
    What's really bizarre is that Apple chose to put 100mbs wired ethernet ports on the Airport Extreme Base Station, which means when I hook a USB drive to it, I should actually get faster transfers wirelessly than wired. How bizarre is that?

  • IMac does not see Airport Extreme Base Station wirelessly

    Trying to use my existing PC hooked up to Airport Extreme BS via ethernet cable, which works fine. I then open Airport Utility on my iMac and it scans for wireless devices but it can't see the AEBS (located beside it). Opening Base Station tab and there are no solid headers to click on, just the soft grey headers. I am fairly new to Apple product so if I've left any info out to further troubleshoot please let me know.
    Eventually I would like to connect my Apple TV, located downstairs, wirelessly as well as use an Airport Express (wirelessly) to boost the signal if need be due to concrete walls and floors in construction of house.
    I have OS X Version 10.5.8 (up to date), Intel, Airport Extreme Wireless Card.

    Bob - Thanks so much for your quick reply. I followed your suggestions and, to go into perhaps unnecessary detail, I'll write what I did. I completely disconnected the Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) from my computer. I disabled Windows Firewall, uninstalled my anti-virus program, and uninstalled Airport Utility and Bonjour, recycled by cable modem (took out the battery and unplugged it for about 20 seconds), then restarted my computer. After the computer booted up, I verified that windows firewall was disabled, reinstalled Airport Utility and Bonjour, then reconnected the cable connecting the AEBS to the computer (to one of the three ethernet ports, and I tried each of them in case one was faulty) but not to the cable modem as my firewall was disabled and had no anti-virus software. I also reconnected the AEBS power chord. I opened the newly reinstalled Airport Utility software and it did not find the base station. Only when I used "configure other" was I able to access the AEBS. I recycled the modem again, but that did not help. I turned on the firewall, installed anti-virus software, connected the AEBS to the modem, the light turned green, and I was able to access the internet on the primary computer and the wireless network gave me internet access on my laptops. But I was still not able to have my main computer, the one directly connected to the AEBS able to see it, and configure it, without utilizing "configure other."
    Also, any idea why one of my laptops can only access the "guest" network? When it attempts to connect to the primary network it will stay on "acquiring network address" for what seems a few minutes, then switch to the "guest" network and connect immediately.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • IMac crashes due to Airport Extreme

    After installing the latest Airport Extreme my iMac G4 700Mhz crashes. It is so 'extreme' that at some point my mac did not start at all and I had to erase and reinstall 10.4.8 (I do not trust 10.4.9). Lukily I make regular backups!
    Anyone familiar with crashing macs due to AE (firmware 7.0 and 7.1 gave the same problem).
    Frustrating enough my business XP is running very smooth using AE!

    Suggest that you connect your Mac directly to the modem for a few days to see if the connection drops that way.  If it does, you have a modem issue, or an Ethernet cable issue.
    If the connection remains stable during your "test", then the issue points to the older AirPort Extreme. On average, 5 years is about all you can expect from a router designed for home use, so now might be time to treat yourself to a new router.
    Buy from Apple and you have a 14 day return privilege.....in case the new router does not solve your issues.

    Well, from what I saw today while installing my Cannon Pixma MP160 he found it at once and there is quite list of devices that are supported.I presume that recently new devices are in the list.As for the not taking MFP I can only say that may Cannon is MFP.Yes, I cannot use scan, only print.But I firmly believe that apple will correct this flaw

    Hi, I have a bulbous (not flat) airport extreme, and run a macbook and a imac 24" wirelessly using pppoe (ie, bridging to the ethernet connection on the airport). I just can't get my wife's Vaio to connect to the internet even though it's seeing the Airport. Is there some simple solution? I'd be very grateful.

    I had to turn off all security on the Airport to make it work, even then, the PC would only stay connected for ten minutes or so. I then discovered that you have to go into your system preferences and change your sharing setup. You'll need to select the proper sharing settings for how you are connecting to the PC, i.e., ethernet, airport, etc. It pretty much walks you through it. You might also have to change your networking prefs as well if that doesn't do the trick. Good luck, I hope this was of some help.
