I was frustrated by this problem as well. I even uninstalled and then resinstalled a fresh download: SAME Problem.
Now the problem seems to have been RESOLVED on my Windows Vista Laptop.
Instead of trying to open by double-clicking on file icons, I opened the Adobe Reader from the Windows Explorer. On the first screen appeared the usual Adobe Licence & Terms that I had to ACCEPT. This screen NEVER showed up before after either upgrading to the Adobe Reader X or after reinstalling. After accepting the License and TERMS. this problem does NO longer reproduce.
I have successfully opened fewer than 10 PDF files without the annoying error so far. I hope others will reproduce this "FIX" before claiming this was the root cause of the problem.
Hopefully Adobe will display a more meaningfull error message for such a problem.

Internal error occured...Reader XI

I’ve been getting the message “an internal error occurred” the last few times I’ve tried using Reader XI on my Windows 8.1 laptop. I’ve even gone as far as using Revo Uninstaller AND the tool at http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html with no luck. It's obvious that the Acrobat cleaner doesn't work.
Even if I press okay to clear the message, the program closes down.
This is very frustrating as most State Employment Applications are in PDF format and I’ve used Adobe for years. What is the problem with Reader XI and Windows 8.1…and reformatting my machine is NOT a good answer since every other program works??

I went back and uninstalled Reader X as somethings were working for it and then ran Revo and the Adobe tool.
I downloaded XI, disabled AVG and let it install, rebooted and and ran the program, only to get the same error message "an internal error occured". The only thing I haven't done was uninstall the app "Reader" I downloaded from the Windows store that would also allow pdf viewing.
I've switched back to Adobe Reader X and allowed it to update to 10.1.10 but it seems to run sluggish on Win8.1 even with using the Win7 compatibility mode.

Trying to open a large PDF and receive "an internal error occurred" with Adobe Pro. X

We have one user, she has Adobe Pro. X installed, that is having an issue opening a particular PDF that is 37 MBs in size. When she tries to open it up, she receives the "an internal error occurred" message. If she opens up another PDF that is in the same folder (all the PDFs is on the network share) that is smaller in size (less than 100 KB) it opens just fine. I checked for any Adobe updates and downloaded and installed the update(s) that it found.
After it's been patched, I rebooted and still have the same issue. Surprisingly nothing was found in my searches to help this....
Thoughts?

Did you get any errors during Acrobat installation?
If Acrobat is crashing during first launch then it might be an issue with licensing as well.

Error occurs with Adobe Reader on romanian Systems

I have encountered an error in the Version 11.0.10 of "Adobe Reader XI - Romanian" running on a Windows 7, Service pack 1, 32-bit Operating System with a romanian language pack. In Detail the issue appears on opening a pdf-file, showing that there is a Problem with "Arial, Bold", but showing the exact pdf-file as it is supposed to be. The error-message occurs every time and get's pretty annoying. Even mutated vowels that aren't supposed to be in the romanian language are shown without further Problems.
I have tested the pdf-file on other operating Systems with different language packs and another known pdf-reader. In every case except the explained above there are no Errors at all.
How to fix that Problem?

I tried several versions:
Adobe Reader XI - Romanian on Windows 7 - Romanian
Adobe Reader X - Romanian on Windows 7 - Romanian
Adobe Reader XI - Romanian on Windows 7 - German
Adobe Reader X - Romanian on Windows 7 - German
All resulting in the same Error mentioned above.
I also noticed, that Windows 7 with the Romanian Language Pack contains 5 different Arial-Font versions, while the German Language Pack contains 9. I expanded the Arial Fonts on the Romanian Windows 7 from five to nine and created a new pdf file (on the same way the Initial file was created) resulting in the same error.

Can't launch Adobe Reader 11.0.06: 'An internal error occurred'

Today I purchased a highly recommended e-book ('Rally All Around') which is available by download. Double clicking on its file brought up a message that I needed a newer version of Adobe Reader, and linked me directly to 11.0.06 (Mac) on the Adobe site, which I downloaded and installed. Unfortunately, this application refuses to launch: irrespective of whether I try to launch it directly, from the Applications Folder, or by double clicking the new book, I receive the 'An internal error occurred' error message and the program shuts down. I have followed the advice provided in this forum for a previous version of Reader: I deleted all existing versions of the program, as well as the Adobe Folder in my Library, then attempted to reinstall. I've also used 'Get Info' to ensure I have the required read/write permissions on the application, and the Adobe Library Folder. Unfortunately now I have lost the ability to open any PDF file at all! I'm very unimpressed (to say the least!) that I have lost hours trying to troubleshoot this problem, as well as my money for the book and functionality on my machine! I am running Mac OS X 10.9.1 on an Intel Core i5. I'd be grateful for help, and advice, if you care to share. I'd like to count to 10 and try and fix this, before succumbing to the temptation to send a howler to the publisher.

I did eventually solve it, and I think it was using this advice I received on the Adobe Forums:
The error that you are facing might be due the reason that the user logged in doesn't have permissions to access the following directory: "~/Library/Application Support/Adobe". Can you please try the following steps with the user account in which you are facing the error:
1. Remove the Adobe Reader from Applications directory by moving it to Trash.
2. Now delete the following directory: "~/Library/Application Support/Adobe". Please note that this path is for the Library folder present inside the user directory that you are currently logged in.
3. Restart the machine.
4. Now re-install Adobe Reader XI.

Adobe Reader 11 - An internal error occurred - Mac OS X 10.9.1

My system is a Mac OS X 10.9.1 which had Adobe Reader working perfectly fine.
I have downloaded and installed the NEW Adobe Reader 11 yesterday.
Every time I open a PDF from any web browser I get a "An internal error occurred" message and nothing opens.
I also get the same error message when I try to open the application from the Applications folder.
There is NO error code ssociated with the error message.
All previous Adobe Reader versions worked fine.
I deleted the "Adobe" folder from the "Library" directory, installed an older version of Adobe Reader but still get the same message.
I have said all the information I have.
Please let me know the solution.

Files to delete:
Mac HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe - Trash the Reader folder.
Mac HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins - Trash the AdobePDFViewer.plugin and AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin files.
[user]/Library/Preferences - Trash the com.Adobe.Reader.plist file. (Hold the "Option" key when clicking "Go" from the Finder menu to access your [user]/Library folder)
Mac HD/Applications - Trash the Adobe Reader app.
Empty the trash.
THEN download the FULL installer from here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
That should get you a "clean install" of Reader and the plug-ins for it.

Adobe Reader 11 "an internal error occurred" - Mac OS X 10.9.3

I have a user running Adobe Reader 11 on Mac OS X 10.9.3 starting today the application can not be launched. Instead the following: "an internal error occurred" is displayed.
I have already deleted all Adobe Reader files (library and application) from the system, restarted, and reinstalled the latest version from the adobe website. This did not resolve the problem. I have also repaired the system's disk permissions and verified the integrity of the boot disk.
Does anyone have any idea what a solution for this problem might be?

Problem with adobe reader when installing on mac book. "Internal error occured".

Both me and my friend installed Adobe reader on our mac books this week, and it doesn't work. The only thing that happens when we try to open the program is an text message with "Internal error occured". And that's it. The PDF-file is not the problem, and I have the latest version of Mac operating system, so that's not the problem eighter. Mac support told me to contact you. Please help me as soon as possible. Adobe Reader 10.1.3 - Internal Error Occurred??

Been battling for hours trying to get the bog standard reader to work with a new MBP running 10.7.4. It downloads and installs OK and I get the licensing page but after clicking 'Agree' I just get 'An Internal Error Occurred'.
Suffice it to say this is driving me mad now. I've tried deleting, re-installing, eliminating all traces of Adobe from User and Root libraries under Application Support, Preferences and also Internet Plug Ins. I've also tried the (not) fix of installing Java Runtime.
All in all, epic fail. NOTHING seems to fix it and I think it's time to give up with Adobe Reader and find something else or just stick with preview. So much time to fix a bog standard application (maybe I should stick with Windows where "It just works"). Really is a royal PITA. I've scoured the net for problems and I'm just wondering if it's a commong problem seeing as I don't see many others reporting it. I certainly don't plan on doing a full system restore just to sort this out.
Anyone come across it or got any ideas to save me wasting yet more of my life on this? Any hep appreciated.

Right. After almost a day I finally sorted the problem.
Adobe Reader worked under the spare Admin account so I deleted that in case it was confusing the installer. I then rerpaired persmissions. I then re-installed Reader. Same problem "Internal Error"!!
So, I re-created another Admin account and opened Reader. No problem. After clicking accept licence it opened up with a question to make default or not. After this I hunted through every folder and found that Under 'User/Librarary/Application Support/Adobe' there was an Acrobat folder. When I checked the account I normally use there wasn't, and never was?? So I copied pasted a copy of the Acrobat folder into the same location on the non working account and all is fine.
Problem for me is, why did this happen? I wasted almost a day on this. Is it a problem with the installer, the Macbook or Permissions. I checked permissions and they are identical to those on the spare Admin account. So why did the installer not create the Acrobat folder on the main account from where it was installed? Reason it concerns me is with regard to updates. Will they also screw up?
I'll try to explore further as times goes on but for now I have to say I've had enough of Acrobat and Lion for one day. "It just works". Really???

Check for the permissions.
Login as administrator account.

Adobe Reader Startup Error (Internal Error Occurred)

I've been using adobe reader X without a problem for a long time, until suddenly one day it started poping up a message "An internal error occurred" (marked with a red X), every time I try to run it or open a pdf file. The error pops up even when windows explorer tries to create thumbnails for pdf files, or when I try to save documents as pdfs in Microsoft Office Word.
I uninstalled it, installed reader XI, but get the same error.
Help please, I really need to be able to open pdf files !

(the installer file kept disappearing after the error, so I assumed it was being quarantined by my antivirus). I had to download the complete installer manually in order to get it to work. Dear fellow Adobe Reader users,
could one of you please help me making my Adobe Reader X run again?
Whenever I try to open it, it gives me the message "An internal error occured." and closes.
Things I already tried:
Re-installing it (Normal, with CCleaner, with RevoUninstaller, Microsoft FixIt)
Repairing it from the windows program menu.
Tried the direct download (52MB)
Disabling the antivirus software for the installation process.
Information about my system:
Windows 7 x64.
Software version Adobe Reader X (10.1.3).
My user belongs to the Administrator group.
I would be glad if someone could help me out. If any further information is necessary, please feel free to ask for it.

Adobe Reader X / Windows 7: "Internal error occurred"

I installed Adobe Reader X for my Windows 7 OS, but each time I attempt to open it I receive an error message: "internal error occurred." There are two (2) user accounts, but only my user account is affected.

I am having the same problem but I don't think it has anything to do with the permissions or account information. This just started out of nowhere a few weeks ago. I tried installing a few older versions of adobe but I either get the same message, "An internal error occurred." or a different error message. I have attached a screenshot of the error message I keep getting. I also tried running the repair options via the control panel but that did not work. I can't change any settings within the program as each time I try to open it I immediately get the error message. I have uninstalled and installed adobe several times and there is no change.
