An iPhone salesman diary...

At times like these, when demand is over supply, it's easy to get upset with the person standing in front of you. Remember, it's not their fault. Supply issues are not the stores fault, or even the company. Supply issues are manufacturing problems. Just remember, the UK only got 16,000 phones total. We will be getting ours here MUCH MUCH sooner.
Below is an article called "Diary of a somebody - life in iPhone 4 land" published on theregister.co.uk.  It's a good story that illustrates my point: Don't get mad at the salesman.   Hopefully this will help lighten a tense situation
June 23rd 08:00 Arrived in work to wait on the delivery. The new iPhone is due out tomorrow so it should hopefully be chock full of them. There does seem to be significantly more excitement about this launch than the 3GS. Maybe it's because it's on more networks, maybe it's because of the revolutionary new features like a flash. Who knows? Tomorrow should be a good sales day.
08:20 Just opened up the delivery. I contains exactly no iPhone 4's. Hmm, they must be coming in on their own delivery later.
08:49 Logged onto the employee communication system. Apparently the iPhone 4 comes out tomorrow and it is a massive opportunity to blah blah blah. Also there is a football match on today so it is important that we remember that customers are our first priority and yadda yadda yadda...
08:57 People are queuing outside my shop. I open early to let them in. "Can we reserve an iPhone 4?" No, it will be first come first served, sorry. "Can we give you a deposit for one?" No, we have been told we are not allowed to prioritise any customers. Sorry. "We'll give you £50 each to hold them for us." Thanks but no thanks, I don't fancy job hunting in this economy. I take their details and agree to call them once I know what stock levels will be like.
10:20 Still no sign of the iPhone 4. Just had a communication from the company that they want us to open an hour early on launch day. An hour less in bed. Super.
11:27 Just had a special non-scheduled delivery of iPhone 4... posters. There is a lot of chatter on email that the company has very limited stock so we might only get a couple each. Great, it's going to be the 3G launch all over again.
13:39 So far today I have had 19 people asking about the iPhone 4. That is more contracts than most sales people sell in a week. To give Apple their due they are VERY good at getting the hype levels up.
14:17 Due to demand direct sales have been given a head start on selling out the iPhone 4 and will be contacting certain customers today. Uh what?! Is the company actively trying to ensure stores have insufficient stock to meet demand?
16:28 Just had a customer calling me an incompetent idiot because I couldn't guarantee him an iPhone 4 for tomorrow. He brags about how successful he is and about how he always gets what he wants And then spends about five minutes berating me for my refusal to promise things I may not be able to deliver. I consider calling him a yuppie oxygen thief who is lucky to be able afford an iPhone as the poor wraiths who make it never will be able to buy one on their salaries of $90. I don't. He continues telling me how this is no way to run a business and that I'll never go anywhere. I consider telling him to get a grip and stop acting like a petulant, spoiled toddler as it is, ultimately, just a phone. I don't. I smile and apologise for the inconvenience. He calls me an idiot again and storms out. What is it about Apple products that makes otherwise rational human beings behave like complete maniacs?
17:05 Just had final confirmation from the company, out of the 20 odd stores in the region only three are getting any stock. The biggest store of these is only getting 13. Tomorrow is going to be a bloodbath. Time to phone lots of people and disappoint them.
18:17 I lock up the shop and walk to the train station. On my way I pass the Apple store. Already people are outside with chairs and sleeping bags. My heart sinks.
June 24th 6:00 My alarm is beeping. I look at my watch and wonder why my alarm is set so early. I remember. It's iPhone 4 non-launch day. I get ready and leave for the shop.
07:30 I pass the Apple store, there must be at least a few hundred people queuing outside now. I walk the short distance to my shop and find six people waiting. I break the bad news about the stock situation. One looks like he is going to cry. Upon logging onto the company communications system there is a patronising message telling me there is almost no stock of the iPhone 4 and suggesting I might want to try and sell other phones instead. Thanks for that, marketing geniuses at head office.
08:00 I open the shop early as ordered. Immediately I am pounced on by someone who was waiting outside. He tells me the nearby O2 store only got nine iPhone 4's delivered. I tell him that is nine more than us. He runs off muttering that he is going to try another national retailer. I wish him luck.
09:17 So far today I have had to turn away almost as much business as we do in an entire month. Part of me wonders if this scarcity of product isn't cynically engineered to maximise hype. No other phone manufacturer has these stock issues at launch every single time they launch a product. There is a new communication from head office. The iPhone 4 is only available on upgrade till an unspecified time in the future. Oh, and employees are banned from buying one on pain of dismissal.
09:27 A new missive from head office, O2's upgrade line is swamped and is close to falling over. I get a call from a former colleague in another phone retailer. Apparently they got no stock either - at least it's not just us.
11:30 Far from being one of the biggest sales days of the year this is turning out to be one of the quietest. This "launch" is either cluster of epic proportions or an equally epic marketing coup. I can't quite work out which.
"iPhone 4. This changes everything. Again." The only thing I see changing is my choice of job. ®

Thanks for the post -- a good read. All to often the salesperson gets blamed because they are the direct interface with the customer. I blame the corporate decision makers for their lack of foresight, planning, and communication.

  • Multiple devices on iCloud using one account

with only 1 apple account and multiple family members using iOS devices and iCloud, changing data on one device changes it on all of them, how can i separate the devices?

    Hi Hammers1.
From what I understand you want to all use the same iCloud Apple ID for:
    - Find my iPhone
    - Calendars (diary)
    - Photo Stream
You want to be able to have separate:
    - Contacts
    - FaceTime accounts
If that is correct you can do the following:
    1. On each device under Settings > iCloud use the same Apple ID.
    - Enable Calendars, Find my iPhone, and Photo Stream (and any other data you want to share)
    - Do not enable Contacts. If it is already enabled and you choose to turn it off you will get an alert to keep or delete contacts. Removing them inthis method will only remove them from THAT device, not the account itself.
    2. Each member can setup their own iCloud account under Settings > Mail Contacts Calendars > iCloud and enable Contacts (and other data types depending) if they want. Or, they can just keep their contacts local on their device, sync through another service, etc.
An article that may be of use is http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4020 which talks about using multiple iCloud accounts on one device, and what features can be used on two accounts at the same time. For example, a device can only use Photo Stream with one iCloud account, but can have two iCloud accounts syncing different calendar data at the same time.
    3. For Face Time, you can disable this or setup any other Apple ID on each device by going to Settings > FaceTime > tap the Apple ID and Sign Out.
One thing to note also if someone decides to say, use the shared calendar and then their own calendar by setting up two iCloud accounts, they can set up the default calendar under Settings > Mail Contacts Calendar. This can help if they want to make sure events they enter on their iPhone only go to their calendar, and not she shared calendar. You can also edit this when creating each event indivudually as well but setting a default can save time.
Your Apple ID can be used for several services onyour device. While it is nice to have the same Apple ID for everything, sometimes having more than one for different things is the way to go. Here is another article that may help:

  • ICloud is no longer working with Outlook

today my outlook calendar stopped updating through iCloud.  I opened the iCloud control panel and "contacts" and "calendar" are no longer an option to sync.  My only two options are "photo stream" and "bookmarks"
Also when opening the iCloud control panel a note pops up that says "Repair the iCloud control panel to use iCloud with Outlook"  I've done this 5 times  I've also uninstalled iCloud for PC and reinstalled it twice  Still pops up with the "repair" notice.
    Please help!

Since the 20 September 2012, I have been experiencing the same problem.  This morning, I have been able to add calendar events by logging onto ICLOUD.COM and the updated calendar events are reflecte on my IPHONE and IPAD.
    I am experiencing this problem:
I add a diary event in Microsoft Outlook 2010.  Before the 20 September 2010, this diary event automatically synchronises on my IPAD and IPHONE calendar.  At this point of time, an updated diary event in Outlook 2010 is not reflected in my IPAD and IPHONE Calendar.
When I add a diary event on my IPHONE, the diary event sychronises on my IPAD diary.  However, the diary event does not synchronise on my Outlook PC.
    Can anyone help me out?
I have uinstalled ICLOUD; reinstalled it and I have been following these discussion forums.

  • How can i copy my diary from blackberry to iphone 3gs - this si my first iphone so not sure how to use anything at the moment but my diary is the most important bit i need!

how can i copy my diary from my old blackberry to new iphone 3GS - this is my first iphone so i am complete novice!  I hope to avoid re-inputting every entry!

You probably already figured this out, but....
The iPhone will sync from various things on your computer (check the manual for details) but if your Blackberry won't export the data or sync to anything, then you'll need to get the info off the Blackberry manually.
Alternatively, it might be possible to set the Blackberry up to sync with Google Calendar, maybe, to export the data? I don't know anything about Blackberrys. Try a google search or ask on BB forums with help getting the data out.
But it will be easier to manually type into something on your desktop/web, then sync with the iPhone, rather than hand-entering on the phone itself. Then keep syncing with whatever you decided to use, so that you'll never need to do this again.

This has worked fine with MobileMe with only a couple of minor glitches in the past.
Any experience doing this the "right" way?

  • Application to write journal or diary on my iPhone?

I use my iPhone and PowerBook everyday, and just wondering if there is an application I can write a journal or diary on iPhone or my PowerBook. I just know "Notes" for having some notes, and "iCal" for leaving some short notes on their notes section (but if I leave notes in a certain date in iCal, it is marked at a new event...)

    blue sky,
You might take a look at viJournal from
    SkoobySoft
viJournal Lite is freeware so you can experiment to see if it meets your needs.

  • 2 iphones, 1 mac, and making a common diary

Before I go and lose most of my current iCal entries, can anyone please guide me appropriately?
I have 1 Mac, and have been using iCal on it for only my diary entries.
These have obviously synced to my iPhone.
My wife now also has an iPhone, and we wish to pool our iCal entries. Her phone has never been synced, nor connected to my .Mac account.
If I wish to sync her phone with my Mac such that her iCal entries are added to those already present, but without overwriting those that are already there, how do I go about that? I would also want them to then sync to my iPhone.
If I then connect her phone to my .Mac account, will this sync then be continuous to both phones?
    Thanks in advance

When you first sync her iPhone you should see a message asking if you want to overwrite or merge the calendars. Also what you can do is create a calendar in iCal for her and then set the INFO tab to sync to that calendar from her iPhone.
You can do the same for contacts.

  • IPhone and MacBook diary

Is there a diary application which I can use both on my iphone and on my MacBook?

I really recommend [MomentoApp|http://www.momentoapp.com]. It can not only be used as a diary, but it will automatically pull information from your Twitter, Last.FM and Facebook accounts. I believe they are working on a natice Mac application for the desktop.

  • Iphone Diary application

There seems to be a problem with sending appointments via email to iPhone and then sync between iPhone and PC. I have a person setting appointments for me outside of my business and she emails these to my PC via Outlook and they set into Outlook calendar but I also want it to go to my iPhone so that all are on the same page.
Does anyone know of an iPhone application that does this and works with New Zealand systems (not too computer savvy).
I have looked at Mailme but I don't think this will do what I want

  • Synch Outlook 2010 diary with iphone 4 - was fine, now calendar gone!

I've just updated to Outlook 2010, and my iphone now won't sync with Outlook calendar, now wiped its entire contents so no diary at all on iphone!  It goes thru the motions, but nothing is there.  Fine and dandy in my Outlook on the pc.  Daren't try synch with my ipad in case the same happens.  Any bright ideas please. Frustrated of Hove

I'm on a 4S  IOS 7.1 won't show my Google Calendar I have about 8 that should be showing. FIXED!!
I'm posting this here because your answers didn't help with my particular problem but aimed me in the right direction. so maybe this will help someone else.
    ------------------------------ This is what I tried ------------------------------
At the bottom of the calendar app click Calendars there should be a check to the left of your calendar. (my calendars weren't even listed here)
The google.com/calendar/iphoneselect solution. (mine was checked correctly)
Google 2-step verification (I even turned this on to see if it would help)
Deleting all accounts “Settings – Mail,Contacts,Calendars – Accounts” and starting over
    ------------------------------ My Solution ------------------------------
Since I deleted all my accounts already this is what worked I don't know why.
    Under “Settings – Mail,Contacts,Calendars – Accounts”
I added my google account “add account” “Google”... so on. Calendar was selected.
I added a second account “add account” “other” (at bottom) scroll down to “add CalDav Account” under calendars.
    Server= www.google.com
    user name = your email
    password = your password
    description = whatever
    Calendar was selected.
Then I went to “Settings – Mail,Contacts,Calendars – Accounts” and down towards the bottom I clicked “default calendar” and set it.
    I hope this helps

  • Recent software upgrade has changed the way my iPhone syncs with my macbook, and diary items no longer upload from my iPhone. I've tried a to fix it and seem to have made things worse. What is the best way to get the two devices in sync ?

Recent software upgrades has changed the way my iPhone syncs with my macbook and items entered on my iPhone are no longer uploaded to my macbook. I've tried to fix it and seem to have made things worse, my iPhone now has a long list of calanders that I don't want and can't delete and nothing is uploading to my macbook.

You need to look at Mac's iTunes, check  > System Preferences > iCloud.
If you use iCloud for Calendar, Contacts then turn off those items in iTunes, Info tab with your iPhone connected and selected.

I have set up a shared diary on iCloud, I can see it on my phone. I can see entries on my iCloud view on laptop but when looking on the phone you cannot see the entry until you click on the day. Is there a way to highlight each entry so at a glance I can see what days have an entry?
