An Irregularity....

Hi,
Made a Windows partition on my grandads Mac after installing 10.5 and proceeded through the install. However, it said "Windows can't be installed on BOOT CAMP partition as it is not NTFS" and i cancelled the install and wiped that partition. This has never happened in any BC partition i mean it's never said it can't install there before.
Then, i installed 10.5.2 on his machine and it re-booted. Now, when he re-boots, he gets a black screen that says "Cannot find boot disk, enter boot disk and press any key to continue". He can't boot into OS X and that's the only partition. All was well until the 10.5.2 install. What can I do?
Thanks

When you got to the install part to select a volume, you have to DELETE the FAT partition created by Boot Camp Assistant and create an NTFS partition in its place.
Depends on what steps you took. Used Boot Camp Assistant to remove the Windows partition should work. You may lose free unfragmented space in the process and not have as much as you had before.
You may need to reformat (Partition in Disk Utility) before installing Leopard again.
If you have data you want to retain that is not backed up then use an external drive to backup; or use your TimeMachine backup to restore. Restoring will result in OS X in one tight area and maximize free space.
There is nothing seriously wrong with your disk drive.
When you cancelled though you left your drive in an unknown state.
Repairing the drive from Disk Utility may help - or not.
when you install updates, it puts files all over the free space, reducing the amount of free space. Upgrading a drive and system from Tiger to Leopard can also cause problems that a fresh wipe (reformat) and install avoids.
Whenever I install and update OS X, I run SuperDuper to clone the drive, for bootable backup, and then reformat and restore which optimizes the arrangement of the system directories and improves performance, as well as having OS X tightly packed into one area of the drive.
With Vista, be sure to allow enough free space for pagefile, restore points, updates and whatever you plan to add or install.

Does anyone know if it is possible to change the display in week view to show all 24 hours per day for those of us that work irregular hours.
Also is it possible to have all of the 'all day' entries showing, not just 3.5 of them.
The app Week Cal HD was the perfect calendar until Apple removed it so could they please offer the same facilities that it offered.

  • How do I import an irregular shape into pages to wrap text around?

I see in the lovely demo how pages can wrap text around an image that is an irregular shape, but they never tell us  how to actually get one onto the iPad. As far as I can tell jpg's and tff's are all that the iPad will work with and those are all square. How do I import an irregularly shaped graphic such as a butterfly or logo into my document? Thanks.

You must need a PNG with transparent background. I just made one in iDraw and it flows great in Pages.

My imac reboots on its own from sleep at irregular intervals. Is this normal?  why does it do this, it didn't do it untill about six months ago. At least I didn't notice it. There is no power outage, not even a blip when it happens.

im just as a starter as u in macs just so u know, i did that yesterday and it fixed my isight(it was showing black). ok u unplug ALL cables, usb etc etc everything from the imac and unplug the main power cord too for like half a minute and then replug everything in and thats it i believe

  • Can anyone shed some light on the OS X icon "irregularity?"

Had expected icons (Mail, Reminders, Calendar, etc.) would update to those of iOS 7 with the Mavericks update. They did not (for me)! Should I be doing something in order to see the updated icons in Applications and Dock? I noticed the icons changed in iCloud. This obviously is not a major issue just an observation. Can anyone shed some light on the OS X "irregularity?"

When I upgraded to Mavericks... The Calendar and Notes icons were updated also.
After the first reboot... they reverted back to the last generation.

I am having issues with streaming music from iTunes on my MacBook Pro to my audio system through AirPlay.  Works perfectly with my iPod Touch.  The AirPlay icon appears irregularly in iTunes and when selected doesn't connect.  Running latest IOS software.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

    You said:
No, I do not want to "factory reset" my iPod. No I do not wish to do anything crazy long or hard to fix this.
That may be necessary, It is not what you want to do/not do but what is required to resolve your problem.

  • Irregularity with anchor behaviour - inserting anchors in anchored frames

I am experiencing irregular behaviours with anchors and I'm not sure if it's a glitch or something I am overlooking. Sometimes it works, sometimes it dosen't, and I can't tell what is causing the difference.
What I want is an anchored text fram to a main body text - which is an imag caption - and from this text frame I create a new anchored image frame, in which I put the image I am referring to in the caption. Sometimes this process works smoothly, while other times, when I go to insert the anchor in the anchored text frame it re-routes me back to the main body text from where I came. I have tried different insertion points within the anchored text frame, but nothing seems to solve the problem in this scenario....
    any ideas?
    thanks!

    Kat,
I hope I understand your problem correctly.
The paragraph containing the figure title is positioned in the side head with alignment set to Top Edge. Then that paragraph is followed by another paragraph, which of course is in the main text column, empty, and aligned at the top with the side head.
With the insertion point in the second paragraph, import the image file. This puts the image below the line. Select the image, not the anchored frame, and scale it if necessary. If not created at the correct size, you probably want to scale it down to fit the width of the text column. Now press the key sequence Esc, m, p (note m and p are lowercase). The anchored frame shrinks to fit tightly around the image and changes it position to At Insertion Point. If you turn on Text Symbols, you will see the end-of-paragraph symbol at the lower right edge of the image, and the top of the anchored frame will align with the TOP of the side head text.
You also have to be sure the line spacing of the paragraph holding the image is NOT fixed or Frame will move the image up.
Hope this is what you need,
    Van

  • Irregular failure to authenticate OpenDirectory users via password-based ssh

TL;DR - my Yosemite Open Directory server irregularly fails to properly authenticate users (via password-based ssh).
I recently moved an Open Directory server from an Xserve running 10.6 to a new Mini running 10.10.  I archived the OD config on the Xserve and then took it offline.  Then I brought the Mini online using the same hostname/IP address, created a new OD master using the archived configuration.  Everything seemed to work well, however sometimes the server will not authenticate users via password when logging in with ssh/sftp/scp.  This is also true of a few OS X machines that bind to the OD server (i.e. they usually authenticate users properly, but sometimes fail for no discernable reason).
The failures are only for password authentication using ssh.  Other mechanisms do not exhibit the auth failures.  For instance, AFP and SMB user auth never fails (with proper credentials).  Nor do users to a FileMaker Server machine that authenticate via the OD server have problems.  Public key based ssh authentication never fails.  Local accounts (non-OD, aka "Local Network Accounts") also do not fail using password-based authentication.
The failures are irregular.  The only pattern that I can find at all is that sometimes when the failures start happening, they keep happening continuously until...at some point they work properly again.  That is, they may fail from 11:15 am to 2:01 pm, and if so, then all of them fail in that time range.  Sometimes that time range lasts seconds, sometimes it lasts hours.
The time range failure pattern is host specific.  For instance, if password authentication is failing on the main OD server, authentication may be fine on the other bound machines.  If authentication is failing on one of the bound machines, then it may be fine on all others and fine on the OD server itself.
The failure pattern does not seem to correlate to any other events or activity on the server (even remotely).  CPU utilization never gets above about 15%.  Memory utilization is similarly very low.  Network traffic is occasionally high, but it does not seem in any way related to the auth failures.  There are not other log messages that occur before or after the failures with any consistency.
I've been monitoring the auth failures by attempting to login to the OD server and two other bound hosts once per minute so that I can tell when the auth is failing (before getting calls from the users).
The adaptive firewall is not running on the OD server.  Nor is any other firewall.
Below are a comparison of the system.log entries for a failed and successful auth (I've stripped out those lines that are identical in both instances).  The log entries have been sanatized as described.
Rebooting the OD server does not affect the bound clients' authentication.  Rebooting the OD server is problematic, and I cannot do it often.  When I do, sometimes failures start soon after reboot, and sometimes that don't come back for many hours - again, no discernable pattern.
If anyone has any ideas what I can do to discover the source of this problem and come up with a solution, I'd very much appreciate it.  Note that I'm aware that I can export all users and group and reconstruct a new, clean OD master, but without the ability to save the passwords, this becomes a large logisitcal problem, and I'm saving it as a last resort (particularly since if it doesn't solve my problem, I will have inconvenienced many users and be right back in the same place).

  • How can I divide a picture into 2 (or more) irregular shapes (i.e., free-hand cropping)?

(The answer to this question might apply to different versions &/or products, so my version -- Photoshop Elements 2 -- may be irrelevant.)
I need to "cut" a JPG photo into two (or more) irregular shapes, for a graphics project I need in my work.
I'd then want to save each shape as a separate JPG, for manipulating separately.
Can I do this with Photoshop Elements? If so, how and with which tool? The "cutting" should be free-form, so being limited to straight lines would not be a full solution.
I guess this is a kind of "cropping"--though maybe there's a better term, since this doesn't involve selecting a rectangular area within a picture.
    Thanks.

Brad,<br />It wasn't clear if you want to cut the picture into pieces jig-saw style so that the whole is the sum of its parts. If so here is one way using Elements 2 (maybe newer versions have ways of doing this more easily).<br /><br />In this example I cut the picture into 3 parts using the Lasso.<br />1. Select part 1.<br />2. Select > Save Selection: give the selection a name (e.g., part 1).<br />3. Copy/paste selection to new layer (Layer 1 in my example).<br />4. Activate Background layer.<br />5. Select > Reselect, and invert the selection.<br />7. Holding down <Alt>, use Lasso to delete all but part 2.<br />8. Select > Save Selection: give the selection a name (e.g., part 2).<br />9. Copy/paste selection to new layer (Layer 2 in example).<br />10. Activate Background layer.<br />11. Select > Reselect.<br />12. Select > Load Selection: In the Selection pull-down menu choose part 1 and check the "Add to Selection" box. The selection will now consist of parts 1 & 2.<br />13. Invert the selection to give part 3 and copy/paste to new layer (Layer 3 in example).<br /><br />The 3 pieces are in separate layers with transparent background. To save each piece turn off visibility of the other layers.<br /><br />http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1Q7SCAqb8IbQhcV6OdIWvj24WkzB5<br /> <br />Note that for just 2 parts it is much easier; you don't need the Save Selection steps:<br />1. Select part 1 and copy/paste to new layer.<br />2. Activate Background layer.<br />3. Select > Reselect, invert the selection, and copy/paste to new layer.

  • How can I create a chart showing readings at irregular intervals?

With Application Express 3.2.1 (with Oracle DB 10g) I have been trying, without success, to create a line or scatter chart as follows:
    X axis: DateTime
    Y axis: Temperature
The temperature values are taken at irregular intervals so the X axis needs to be scaled accordingly.
The charting tool appears not even to recognize dates as a valid data to include in a chart.
Is it possible? If so, how?

  • Mapping an irregular shape to represent monitor screen

    Hi everyone,
I have captured movements inside an irregular shape and need to map it on the monitor's screen. The input space is a 2D shape with 4 boundaries and these boundaries are not straight lines but irregular and nonlinear. The 2nd space is simply a 2D screen i.e. cursor position on the monitor screen. Maybe, I can use some kind of stretching out or stretching down function or perhaps a combination of both to cover the entire screen. I want this irregular quadrilateral to represent the monitor screen. Another difficulty is that the input space can be different each time and is not unique but I will always have the 4 corners and boundary of the input space.
I appreciate your thoughts on this,
    Elnaz

Yeah it seems like what is probably happening is the magnetic fields created by the sensors are interfering with each other, creating the distortion you see. In short, there are some tools available in LabVIEW that can help you do this, but they are only available in separate toolkits (see here). In particular, the IMAQ (Image Acquisition) toolkit has some calibration functions that do what you are trying to do. This page and this page provide some information about using the calibration tools in IMAQ.
If you are trying to do this on your own though, you'll have to use some fairly complex logic. You would have to step through each coordinate data point to eventually develop a transfer function that shifts your coordinates into a rectangle. This forum has some information that may help you develop code for doing this. But the exact algorithm LabVIEW uses for this is proprietary.
Hopefully this will at least give you an idea where to start. Again, probably the easiest thing to do would use a toolkit.

  • How to handle irregular shaped newspaper clippings?

    Hi,
I am creating a book to re-construct (and adding and editing) an old scrapbook which contains irregularly spahed newspaperclipping. I have pages on which I would like to place just images clippings (any format .tiff, .jpeg, etc).
I have discovered that Aperture apparently does not handle transparent backgrounds and am looking for some suggestions on how to handle this. There have been a few posts in the forums about creating a image in Photoshop then using this as a background. This might work in some of the black themes like Stock Book Black (are the pages true black?). If I want to use one of the other themes like Journal or Photo Essay which allows for maps is there any way to match the page color surrounding the clippings to make it flow with the rest of the book? Are the RGB, CMYK, or HSB values that are published for these themes that I could mimic in a photo editor? Whould this work?
    Thanks.

Try Gaussian Blur with a radius between 3and 6, or Lens Blur with a radius between 8 and 15 and blade curvature 100%.

  • I just bought a C4680 all-in-one new in box. It puts an irregular border around "borderless" prints

I just bought a C4680 all-in-one new in box.  It puts an irregular border around "borderless" prints (at least in 8.5 x ll size) --border is about 1 inch on right, 3/4 at top, 3/8 at bottom and 3/16 at left.  How do I eliminate this?
      Using win XP.

In iTunes on your computer, select the Purchased section under STORE in the left column. Click on the first track and choose "Get Info" from the "File" menu.
In the "Summary" tab you'll see details of the purchaser of the track. Click Next to go through all your purchased music one by one until you find the ones you need to get rid of.
Unfortunately, there are no smart playlist rules that can filter tracks by the purchaser that I know of.

  • Irregularly shaped text boxes; How?

I want to insert text on an image, using a text box is the ideal way to ensure the text wraps nicely, etc. However I do not want the text to be in a standard rectangular or square text box but one of my own irregular shape.
Anybody know how to do this, and where I could get some pointers?
Thanks in advance for your help, very much appreciated.

Depends on which version of Photoshop you're using.
Text inside a Photoshop vector path was introduced with PS CS2, IIRC.
I haven't done this much, so I did some experimenting, and I dove into the Help Files for PS CS2.
First of all, if the Help Files have a section on this, I couldn't find it. That's not good, especially for new users who might not know where else to look for advanced instruction online.
But, my experimentation showed me that you can make an irregularly shaped paragraph text box with the Custom Shape tools. You may then manually edit the anchor points to alter the shape's path to whatever you desire. Then, with your Type Tool selected, hover on the inside of the shape you created and you'll see the "I-Bar" Text cursor change, so that it looks like it's flanked by dotted parentheses characters (We'll call that the "Text-In-A-Shape" ["TIAS"]cursor). This cursor tells you that you can click to initiate text inside of the shape, and it will be bounded to stay inside of that shape, just as it would be if you simply dragged out a rectangular paragraph text box.
Further, something I found lacking was that you can NOT simply use the Pen Tool to create your irregular shape. If you do that, you won't be able to make the "TIAS" cursor appear. You
    must
ucreate the shape starting with the Custom Shapes tools.
If this limitation has been lifted in PS CS 3, I wouldn't know. If that's the version you have, you'll have to discover that on your own.
Once you've entered your text in this shape, you may adjust the Character and Paragraph parameters just like you would with any other text.

  • Random movement within an irregularly constrained sprite (EDITED)

    (NEW EDIT AT BOTTOM)
So, basically, I'm making a little program that crudely simulates an ant colony. I have little tunnels the ant-sprites can travel down, as well as chambers, in an irregularly-shaped sprite.
I am not the most advanced at Director, but at least I've figured some things out. I found code on an open-source website (openspark, actually) that allows for an object to be dragged inside an irregular shape that has a matte ink.
It's all well and good that the ants can be dragged within this boundary, but is there any way to have them use a Random Movement and Rotation behavior that is confined by the same laws? Or is that impossible / extremely hard?
By the way, I already have a middleman behavior I use to toggle between dragging and random movement, so that does not factor into my question. I just need to know how to alter the Random Movement behavior so that it abides by the same constraint rules as my dragging behavior, if possible.
Here is the code I'm using for dragging. I made a couple edits from the original, but not much.
Don't worry about the canJumpGaps function of this code, as I am using a touch screen and it will never be used.
    property spriteNum
    property canJumpGaps
-- set to TRUE on mouseDown if the shiftDown
    property pSprite
    -- this draggable sprite

    tAlpha = pConstraintAlpha.getPixel(tLoc, #integer)
    if not tAlpha then
-- We've gone a step too far: move back to an opaque area
    tSteps = tSteps + 1
    exit repeat
    end if
    end repeat
    end if
-- Update the absolute and relative positions of the draggable
    -- sprite.
    tAdjust     = tSteps * tStep
pCurrentLoc = tImageLoc + tAdjust -- relative to constrain sprite
tMouseLoc   = tMouseLoc + tAdjust -- relative to the stage
    -- Move the sprite
    pSprite.loc = tMouseLoc
    end mMoveSprite
Thank you SO incredibly much to anyone who can help. This is for a senior project of mine in undergrad, and I really appreciate any help I can get. My resources on Director are limited, especially for odd issues like this.
    EDIT:
So I found out that a way to do collision detection in Director is by using getPixel().
I found this protected dcr file that is a perfect example of the way in which I want my ant objects to interact with walls:
    http://xfiles.funnygarbage.com/~colinholgate/dcr/irregular.dcr
I've been trying to build a getPixel() collision detection mechanism for hours but have been unsuccessful.
Basically, what I want the behavior to do is... get the pixel color of the tunnel sprite (sprite 2) at the center of the ant sprite. If the pixel color is white (the transparent background color surrounding the tunnel shape), I want to tell the Random Movement and Direction behavior this:
    pSprite.pPath = VOID
    sendSprite(pSprite, #mNewPath)
    pSprite.pRotate = VOID
    sendSprite(pSprite, #mNewRotation)
This tells the Random Movement behavior to stop moving and determine a new path. The behavior should probably also offset the center of the sprite by a couple pixels when this happens so it is no longer over an opaque area and the Random Movement behavior won't get stuck.
Will this work? If not, could anyone help me in building a collision detection behavior based on getPixel? This doesn't seem like it'd be all that difficult - at least in theory.

    Hi Roberto,
I had an experience, which defies most common sense about data modeling. Moving from a cube to a ODS and then back on to a cube to introduce delta on a BPS delta application. It is a long sad disappointing store. But I had 24 keys (I know 16 is the max, I combined 6 keys into a single filed also had the same fileds in the data fileds, use these combination keys to deal with 16 key max limitation and adjusted during transformation.
It did work, but later gave up due to some other functional issues and we realized it is a bad experiement due to everyones data understanding.
I am saying is 16 key limitation is an issue, you can overcome with combining couple of fileds into a single filed in the start routine, map it and reuse it later.
Hope this gives you some ideas.
    Goodluck,
    Alex (Arthur Samson)
