An mpg export puzzle

I have a QT mpg file, exported from FCP 4.5 with the Sorenson 3 codec. A look at "get movie info" confirms that S3 was used.
I've made sure that all relevant audio and video MIME settings in QT are checked.(However, I recently updated to 10.3.9 and QT 7. Didn't have this problem last time, when I was using 10.3.4 and QT 6)
Movie plays fine on my Mac and on my PC laptop. But when I try to open it in a couple of media converters on the laptop (I need a wmv version, too), I get error messages (one reports the file is damaged or not supported, the other that it's missing a codec.) This may also explain why a PC-owning friend who can usually play QT files can't open mine.
Deadline is approaching. Help, please!
(cross posted in the QT forum out of desperation)

OK,let me edit my description a bit:
1. I use FCP 4.5 HD and QT 7 to export various formats of QT file. Lately I've tried Sorensen 3 because it's not new to Mac or PC.
2. I take my QT export and transfer it to my PC, as in the past conversions on the Mac from QT to WMV have been iffy for my clients and I've had good luck with the PC programs.
3. I try to import the file through PC software Video Convert Master and get the error message that the file is damaged or not supported.
4. I try Microsoft's conversion utility and it tells me that a codec is missing.
The final confusion is that the original QT file plays fine on my PC, but not on a friend's PC.

  • Export puzzle--food for thought.

    Hi,
I used to use FCE 2 on Panther and made a movie and used the export feature to make a DVD. I used "Export to QuickTime Movie" and made the thing self contained.
After lots of time and upgrades (FCEHD 3.5.1, OS X Leopard, a new hard drive, etc,) I was having trouble with playing those old timelines. The rendered part were red indicating that they needed done even though I hadn't changed anything, so I figured I would render them fresh. I deleted my render files to save some space and just did it again. No problem.
But now some of my old QT exports won't play, saying they are looking for these old rendered files. Weird, since I thought they could stand alone. Whatever, I'll just export them again, right? Here's the twist: the new exports are way bigger than the old ones. For example, a 90 second clip was 16.6 MB on FCE2, it is now 326.9 MB on FCEHD3.5.1 Does this have something to do with the HD part in the upgrade? Why is this new stuff so big?
Perhaps I exported the old QT files using something else and compressed it, but I doubt it since the directions clearly state to do that and let iDVD compress it for me. And the info on the files look identical otherwise (codec, dimensions, open with FCE, etc). I'm guessing its just the difference between FCE2 and FCEHD3.5.1 exports. Am I right?
    Thanks,
    Ed

You're probably right, although I could have sworn I made them self contained. But the signs seem to point to them being referrential. I guess I was wondering if i was possible that the new versions of FCE made things bigger by virtue of being "HD" and such.
    Thanks,

  • Best (PAL) workflow to convert HDV interlaced to DV progressive?

Question - What is the best (PAL) workflow to convert HDV interlaced to DV progressive?
Software: Pr, En and Ae - all CS4.
My Camera: (Sony Z1) shoots HDV 1080i.
When capturing and editing, I keep everything HDV and interlaced.
    Premiere Pro:
    Capture HDV - mpeg 1440 x 1080 (1.3333)
    Sequence - 1440 x 1080 (1.3333) HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333) Upper Field First - (HDV 1080i25 Preset)
Once edit is complete, I dynamically link sequences into Encore.
Question - Should I dynamically link to Encore or export sequence from Pro?
If you aren't a fan of dynamically linking the sequences and believe exporting the sequences from Premiere Pro is the way to go, please advise of best export settings.  I assume during the export (from Pr) is when the converting from HDV interlaced to DV progressive takes place?
At present, I dynamically link the sequences into Encore.  This means Encore handles the conversion to DV progressive.
Question - What are the best (Encore) transcode settings to transcode HDV 1080i25 to DV progressive widescreen?
I've tried numerous workflows but as yet, I've not been 100% happy with any of them.
I'm finding it quite a challenge to take HDV 1080i and produce a good looking DVD i.e minimal artifacts and no interlaced jaggies.
I used to downconvert to DV in-camera during the capture process, but I'm finding I'm getting much better results by editing in HDV and downconverting during post.  This is what my post is really all about i.e. finding the best workflow to do this.
I would be very keen to hear of how others are shooting and editing in HDV to then produce best/high quality DVDs.
    Thanks for reading

    Hi DaveMD,
Thank you so much for your Q&A post. It is so helpfull for me. I will test it right now. Unfortunatly for you, I reply your post with no answer, just a feedback..Sorry
    Nevertheless, my details are :
Software: Pr, En and Ae - all CS4.
My Camera: (Sony FX-1000) shoots HDV 1080i.
    Premiere Pro:
    Capture HDV - mpeg 1440 x 1080 (1.3333)
    Sequence - 1440 x 1080 (1.3333) HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333) Upper Field First - (HDV 1080i25 Preset)
I have exported the media in DVD MPG (.m2v) from Premiere and Build the final DVD from that .m2v into Encore.
I have to say that I am not very happy with the final result when I convert into PAL Widescreen.
I can see little artefacts, flikers and jaggies...
    - Do you think that this "double" DVD MPG export could lower the quality?
    - Could it be the FullHD screen (1080x1920) on which I display the final result (PAL 720x572) that interprates the video?
Thank you for your lights !

  • Error loading transcode presets

    Hello,
After solving the problem error importing transcode presets.
I have Mpeg 2 dvd files (.mpg), exported with Premiere CS3.
Now I almost finished my project and put an video as background in a menu and now I am getting the following error: error loading transcode presets.
I am really getting sick of all the errors I am getting from encore dvd cs2 but I know it is the 'easiest' and best way to create dvd's when you're also have premiere cs3.
Cann somebody please help me, to solve this problem?

  • Premiere CS3 doesn't support Camcorder capturing and MPEG-2 on purpose? [very frustrated. Please Hel

My boss gave me a Tape camcorder to extract the videos and post them on Youtube. I've tried Video Edit Magic 4.4, Premiere CS3, and Pinnacle Studio to capture the video, Premiere CS3 is the only software that does not recognize the camcorder. So I'm forced to use Pinnacle Studio Quick Start (The software that came w/ the Camcorder) to exact the video and made them into MPEG-2. Once the MPEG-2 is on my PC, I tried to open it with Premiere CS3 for editing. Once again, Premiere doesn't support the .mpg exported by Pinnacle. I've been tinkering with this for 10 hours, but still not luck . Someone please help me!
PS. I wanted Pinnacle to Export AVI instead of MPEG-2, but the software is so crappy that the exported files would always be distorted.

    Alexander,
You basically have two options: edit in Pinnacle, or Export from Pinnacle as DV-AVI (remember, your material has already been heavily compressed to MPG-2), and edit in CS3, to Export to whatever you wish to upload to YouTube. Most people seem to use FLV, but they'll have to give you the exact specs., that they use.
That is the way it is, with cameras, that create MPG files. Maybe subtly hint that the boss needs a miniDV tape camera, as the files from his/her camera are really meant to be viewed, not edited.

  • Someone knows how to minimize size video-file without lose quality?

I have been trying but I can not find the settings to minimize my video-files in size without lose quality in premier CS3,can someone help me please?.
the file is a mpg  exported mpg2 from imagemixer3SE software that comes with the camcorder I have got.
As well I have got problems finding the audio.I explain:when exporting the mpg to premiere the audio is not there, but in other programs as after effects you can see there are audio.I readed somewhere that provbably the programe forgot to import the codec and I have to find the file .nll  and import it to premiere but I do not know if this is the right answer.
    Please help!!!
    Thank you very much,
    Asyn

Unfortunately, you have posted into the Premiere forum. This is an older series of programs, prior to the introduction of the Premiere Pro line, with PrPro 1.0.
John has hit on part of your problem - MPEG-2. It is highly compressed to begin with. The best format is, as he suggests, DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio. These files will be larger, but will edit better, and you are not likely to experience any Audio issues.
Then, for Export, you have some choices, but you must remember that comprimising the file size and bit-rate WILL diminish quality. How much, will be a function of the CODEC chosen.
What is your intended delivery, DVD-Video, or something else?
I'll bet that Curt, or Jeff, will move your post to the PrPro sub-forum, so look for it there. You will get many more responses in that forum.
    Good luck,

All is not necessary lost. The answers will be in the details.
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
What are the properties of your source video - video compression, audio compression, frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, pixel aspect ratio? The quickest way to get this information is to know the brand/model/settings of the camera that recorded the video. If you do not know that then we will ask you to download the video audio properties readout program MediaInfo (Tree View) to obtain the information.
What have you or the project set as the project preset (which should match the properties of the source video)?
What is the total duration of the Timeline for this problem project? Are the originals for the files imported into this project still at the hard drive save location that they were when they were imported into the project?
What is your intended export - burn to disc or export to file saved to the computer hard drive?
What were your export setting for the mpg export that looked so bad?
What you have imported into the project are just copies of the originals on the hard drive. And, the project needs to
keep the trace back to the originals; otherwise, reconnect problems set in which prevent you from moving forward
in the project or even opening the project.

There may be an explanation for what you have run into.
On what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 11 running? Windows 8 or 8.1? And, are you exporting to MPEG2.mpg file and playing that back on Windows Media Player? If that is the case, please download and install the VLC player
VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!
and let us know if the export plays back video and audio on that player.
If this is the known Microsoft MPEG2 Windows Media Player issue, then explore Publish+Share/Computer/ opportunities other than MPEG or use the VLC player instead of Windows Media Player for the playback of the MPEG2.mpg exports.
Please let us know the outcome.
    Thanks.

  • How do you export a working closed caption for Premiere Pro CC 2014 in .mpg format?

We do weekly 1/2 hour programs that require closed captioning for air. I need to know how to export a self contained .mpg format without using MacCaption. If not possible, is there another, less expensive, 3rd party program that I can use? Or better yet, is Adobe going to create one for us?

Don't use QuickTime to export muxed track files. It can't (never did) export the audio.
Use MPEG Streamclip (free) to export your .mpg to .avi format.

  • Export Project puzzle

There's something about Export Project I obviously don't understand. I have two small JPG-based projects, one (57 images) referenced, the other (77 images) managed in the Aperture library. On Export Project, for either one, I can check or uncheck "Consolidate images". These are the file sizes I get:
proj with 57 referenced images, no consolidate 65.2 MB
proj with 57 referenced images, consolidate 224.9 MB
proj with 77 managed images, no consolidate 159.8 MB
proj with 77 managed images, consolidate 159.8 MB
Is it just me, or is this puzzling?
Am I right in guessing that both exports of the managed project DO contain the masters? If so, why so much smaller than the referenced project? But if not, why so much bigger than the referenced project, far out of proportion to the number of images?

Seems like you might have Previews on for the referenced project, and off for the managed project.
So, for the referenced project if you export with no consolidate, you're only exporting the previews, metadata, version info, etc., but the masters remain outside the library. If you export with consolidate, the masters join and increase the size. For the managed project, there is no difference becase the masters are in the exported project either way. Does that help?

  • How do I export a crossword puzzle from Adobe to Microsoft Word

  • Puzzled by "negative files" in v1.1 "Export as Catalog"

I've been exploring the new features in v.1.1, and have found something I'm
puzzled by. When I go to File/Export as Catalog, there is an option called
"Export negative files", which will include duplicates of the original image files
in the exported catalog, be they raw, dng, jpg or whatever. I'm confused by
the use of the word "negative" here. I originally thought it was an oblique way
of saying that any image exported with a catalog would be converted to DNG
(Digital Negative), but now it seems that the intent is to use "negative file" to
mean an original digital photo file in a way analogous to how a film negative
can be an original of a photo in film-based photography.
Isn't there a better way of phrasing this instead of "negatives"? I know we're
now "developing" digital photos in the Lightroom instead of developing film
in a darkroom, but another film analogy in this instance in this instance
    seems unnecessary and confusing.
Just wondering what others think of this. Personally, it's no big deal to me since
I figured out what "Export negative files" meant by playing with it, but the naming
of features in Lightroom and in Camera Raw is so elegant in general (e.g. Vibrance,
Clarity, Recovery, etc.) that this was a surprise.

    Agreed.
"Include original files" would be much clearer.
Specially since digital files feel more like transparencies (slides)
    than 'negatives'.
At least they didn't try to be really cute and call it "Export slide
files" and have us all really scratching our heads in confusion.

  • Export to Camera - Puzzle Errors

I'm trying to export DV Videos zu Camera/Camcorder with imovie '06. imovie seems to export and doesn't report any errors but on tape the video shows errors which look a bit like puzzle parts.
The Firewire Cable is ok, the tape is ok, the video is ok, I tried with different files. Importing material with the Camera (Sony HVR-A1E) works well with DV and HDV material. The video to export is simple DV material.
Any ideas, what could cause this errors?

    Welcome to the boards.
This is a tough one. Can you discribe your problem a little more? What do you mean by blocky. Do you mean totally pizilated so you can't make out anything or just one big block of color? Can you hear any audio?
Is your camera set to record in the same format you are exporting? DV = DV?
    Are the camera heads clean?
Have you successfully exported other projects using this set up?

  • Exporting to .mpg with multiplexing ... keeps setting to "none"

    Folks,
I need a single file with audio & video into 1.  It needs to be an mpg.
At this moment, all I get from Premiere Elements (8) is an .m2v file and an .mpa
I read that I need to set multiplexing to something other than "none" for them to merge.
But here's the problem ... I set it to mpeg or dvd and save the preset and export the movie .. I still get 2 files.
If I go back to check the preset, the multiplexing has jumped back to "none".
What is wrong ?!  This is driving me nuts !!

Just tried SVCD and get an export error now:
freely translated: "The total video- and audio-bit-speed excedes the maximum."
If I select for audio MPEG and set it to mono 128kbps it keeps the multiplexer at TS and exports a single file with .m2t extention ... but doesn't play any sound when I play the file :/
I'm trying all sorts of settings now and sometimes get a single .mpg file ... but I hear no audio in it :/ (combined stereo or something)
PS: I need a single .mpg file to put on an SD card which goos into a small LCD tv and hangs in a shop looping the film over & over ... and last time I had such an LCD here, the only file that would play on it was an MPG2 with muxed audio.  I remember merging the audio and video with a trail payware program back then ... but the trail period is long over and I just think it crazy paying 100+$ for a software if I already have PremElements .............
