An  Office 2004 error question

Can anyone explain what this error message means and suggest a fix with Office 2004?
"Can't load visual basic for applications"
I get it every time I open the program for the first time. This did not happen in Tiger, but does in Leopard. I've reinstalled Office and that has not helped.

According to another forum post (http://macosx.com/tech-support/mac/word-gives-can-t-load-visual-basic-error/1293 .html):
"you need to do a custom install from your Office CD. Visual Basic for Applications should be under Miscellaneous or Utilities."
It's unlikely that this is a compatibility issue with Leopard. You're probably just missing the component.

    (ofcours ____ is your username)
-There you will find this folder: Microsoft User Data
    - Replace this folder to the desktop
(make sure it is not in the documents folder any more)
    - Restart your Mac

  • Microsoft Office 2004 Test Drive Question

    Hello all,
Please forgive me if this is the wrong forum, but I'm looking for help here... or possibly somebody has a forum elsewhere where I might ask this question:
I have recently purchased a brand new Macbook Pro.
    I installed Office 2004 (Student/Teacher Edition).
When I double-click on a document created by Word (from my PC that I transferred over), instead of my "real" Word 2004 opening the document... I get the Office 2004 Test Drive opening it...and a warning saying "I have 29 days remaining until it expires".
My question is: How can I either remove the Office 2004 Test Drive and/or get it so that my document is opened with the "real" Office, instead of the test drive?
As I said, I apologize if this is the wrong forum... but if you can please a) direct me to the correct forum or b) help me out with a link... I'd VERY much appreciate it.
    Thanks very much!

If you installed (used) the Trial version of Office then merely dragging the folder to the Trash won't do the trick. You will instead have to run the Office Uninstaller (in the /Office 2004/Additional Tools/Remove Office/ folder) and completely remove both the Trial and the licensed version of Office including preferences. Then reinstall your licensed version. This is the only sure way of avoiding any conflicts between the two versions.

  • "Office 2004 cannot start" error message after leopard install.

I have upgraded only 1 of my systems to Leopard. My notebook and Mac Mini are both running OS X 10.4.11. I purchased a Student and Teacher edition of Office 2004:Mac in June 2004 and have installed it on my iMac (now upgraded to OS X 10.5.1) as well as the other two systems. The Tiger systems can both be running Office without any problems, however, when I attempt to open any Office app. on my iMac I get the following message ... 'Microsoft Office 2004 cannot start because Microsoft Office is already in use. An office program is being used by (husband's name). Your installation exceeds ....blah blah'. I have checked the microsoft.public.mac.office newsgroup and it seems that where others experience this problem it is because they have duplicated one of their product id's. That is not the case with me. Each of my 3 versions of office has a different ID. I did an 'Erase and Install' when I installed Leopard so I did a fresh install of Office 2004 on my iMac. This install generated a different product ID from the original one (which I made a note of). However, I don't know how to change the product ID back to the original one or if, in fact, this is what is causing me to get the message.
Can anyone help me - this is driving me crazy??
    Cheers
    Tricia

FYI, the +product ID+ is different from the unique +CD key+, or serial number, (the long string of capital letters and numbers, separated by hyphens) which each installation requires. So the fact that the install, as you put it, "generated a different product ID from the original one," doesn't matter: it still sees the two installations as having the same serial number, and therefore not permitted.
Fortunately the answer is simple. First, uninstall Office 2004 completely from your iMac using the "Remove Office" tool you'll find in "Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Additional Tools," then reinstall it, being sure to use a different CD key this time. Since you just bought the student and teacher edition, which comes with three licenses and three discrete CD keys, you should be all set!

  • Question getting Rosetta to run Office 2004

I am trying to get Office 2004 to work on a new iMac 7". The user does not know which of the 20 copies of Office are his product id so I need to copy the office folder over to his new Mac. When I do this and click on an application it starts terminal. When I install Office from the cd it runs fine with Rosetta but since I copy his installation over it tries to run terminal. Any thoughts how i can force it to use Rosetta to run? I thought I could select the app and click get info and pick use Rosetta check-box but there is none.

but as so many people have found out if you have the Office cd's and serial numbers you still cannot figure out which copy is installed.
Which seems pretty dumb. You can call up "About Word" (or Excel, PowerPoint) and it will show you the product ID number you were assigned by the online registration, but not the product key you used. So it is just about impossible to determine which product keys have already been used.
That said, it doesn't matter what CD you use to install Office. The keys are not on the disk. The installer uses a checksum that validates whether or not the product key you enter is good. The Adobe CSx disks and most other software is the same way. It would cost an absolute fortune to actually press a unique disk which contains an ID that matches the activation ID sticker that comes in the package. So your only real issue is trying to figure out which product ID to use.
So I guess the answer is there is no way to tell OSX to use Rosetta to run Office?
As I said, you don't have a choice. Office 2004 contains only PPC code and so has to run in Rosetta. That's why there's no option to choose it.

  • Unable to download Office 2004 11.2.3 update

I keep getting notices from Microsoft that an 11.2.3 update for Office 2004 is available. However, after downloading this patch on my 56K modem twice, at 5 hours a shot and after several broken attempts, when I've then tried to install it on the HD I get an error message that says I "do not have the platform needed to install this program." My OS is 10.3.9, which it should work with.
I don't understand why 11.2.3 wouldn't consider 10.3.9 acceptable. I've looked at my About Word info to see whether, maybe in an alternate universe, I already downloaded and installed Office 11.2.3, but all it says is that I have Word Version 11.2, which I guess could be anything from 11.2.1 to 11.2.3.
    My questions are:
    (a) Can I find out whether I already have 11.2.3 without knowing it? (In which case I think the error message should say, "You already installed this; what are you, Rip Van Winkle?")
    (b) If--as I deeply believe--I never installed 11.2.3, can anyone tell me why it would refuse to install itself on a platform it's supposed to like?
    (c) Do I really need it anyway? I see from other people's posts that Powerpoint seems to develop problems with 11.2.3, and I use only Word, which has been pretty stable in Office 2004 for Mac and rarely freezes or crashes. So maybe I should resist trying to fix what isn't broken? I would be happy not to have a reason to download 11.2.3, except that I'm afraid I may be missing something important. (Like screwing up Powerpoint.)
Thanks very much for any suggestions.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   15"

The updates are not cumulative. You need to download
and install each update from 11.2.1 thru 11.2.3.
Kappy: I tried downloading and installing 11.2.1, with the plan to download and install the other two if 11.2.1 worked. And the program verified upon completion that the installation was successful. However, when I tried to trash the 11.2.1 installation folder as instructed, I got an error message saying that I "did not have sufficient privileges" for the maneuver, and when I opened Word to see what version of Office 2004 I had now, it just said 11.2, not 11.2.1. So I guess my efforts to keep up with modern technology are doomed after all.
On the other hand, since I'm a home-office user and the only one using the application (i.e., I'm the Administrator, but not on an Exchange), I guess there's no harm in not having the updates. Since the issues the three patches resolve seem to be mainly Exchange issues, I don't really need them. But I do appreciate the helpful information from you and Bob Gold--thanks very much.

  • Office 2004 Wont Reinstall

To tell it from the beginning. I had a bootcamp partition. I erased the partition because I had wanted to increase it in size. So then when i tried to recreate the bootcamp partition i got errors saying I need to reinstall OS X because some files couldnt be found or moved or something. So I did. I reinstalled my Office 2004 (legal copy and all). and everything ran without problems.
then i finally decided to print something and i got the error that many people seem to have gotten. the solution they were given was to deleted this xerox or another plugin. i navigated to that correct folder and i had no such plugin (but i did this after uninstalling office 2004 because i was unaware of it). I know that other programs, like firefox, can print with this printer so its definitely something with word.
so then, after uninstalling it ive tried to reinstall it but the install wizard will not run. the icon will appear along the dock, hop a little bit, and then disappear and nothing will happen. since that wouldnt work, i manually coppied the files to my app folder and upon trying to open any program, had the same problem. the program would appear in the dock, hop for a few seconds then dissappear. i have searched with spoltlight and deleted ever office 2004 file on my computer but still no luck.
as a side night, a few days ago, before i encountered my printer problem (which might just be because i had yet to print anything in office programs) i installed fink and darwin ports. i have no idea how to remove anything that they may have done so they may be the cause.
any thoughts? thanks. i really need this back up and running for school.

Since Office is not an Apple product. You'll get better response if you use a forum dedicated to Microsoft's Mac products such as <http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.mac.office> rather than an Apple forum that focuses on the installation of OS X.
Be sure to search the forum first in case someone has already had a similar question answered. You'll get your answer faster this way. Post your question in the forum if you don't find anything that helps you.

  • Can't open .cwk files in Office 2004 - Help

Hi, imac intel 24. Running latest software. I have several .cwk files from back when. Now, I can't open them. I believe they are spreadsheets but Office 2004 won't open them. Any ideas? I always get an error saying I need a 3rd party app. Thanks in advance.

Word 2004 can open AppleWorks word processing documents. I have never been able to get Excel to open an AppleWorks spreadsheet though I've seen a couple of other users say they could. Nothing other than AppleWorks can open AppleWorks draw, paint or database files.
You can try icExcel from Panergy Software which can open AppleWorks 5 & 6 spreadsheets. It doesn't save as Excel, but will save as text.
The best option I can think of is to get AppleWorks for your Mac. It will run very well on an Intel Mac.
Since this question is really about opening AppleWorks files, the better place to post would have been the AppleWorks forum. When a question is about using Office, I would normally suggest posting in the Microsoft newsgroup, but I doubt you'd find many users who know anything about AppleWorks.

  • Problem with .docx files and Office 2004

After the upgrade to Snow Leopard, I now am receiving a message "There is not enough memory or disk space to convert." when I try to open a Office 2007/2008 docx file. The error does not happen on all docx files, but only on files over 100kb. The same files that do not work now, all worked prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard. I am using a fully patched Office 2004 (11.5) in addition to the open XML compatibility software 1.1.1 from Microsoft. I have removed all error and duplicate fonts and repaired disk permissions.
I have looked on both Apple and Microsoft for an answer, but nothing except Microsoft claiming Office 2008 will work seamlessly with Snow Leopard.

I just came across this problem too. Very frustrating. I just got this new MacBook Pro last week (so I'm using Snow Leopard too). I installed Office 2004, updated it to 11.5, and installed the open XML conversion software, but no dice. I absolutely should have plenty of memory and disk space to do any docx conversion.
Also, I'm only trying to convert a 20KB docx file, so large file size isn't an issue here. And my copy of Office 2004 is totally legit, in case that's a question.
I really need to be able to open docx files for work, so this is a real problem for me. Help me, Apple-wan Kenobi!

  • I have 1 GB RAM on an '07 MacBook Pro. 1) How do I check remaining memory? 2) I have Microsoft office 2004 - do I need to buy more RAM to upgrade to '11? 3) I need a new battery ... Is it worth the $$ to buy a new battery, RAM and Microsoft office 2011?

I have a MacBook Pro from '07 with 1 GB of memory. The battery is shot and my AppleCare has run out. I just upgraded the OS to 10.6.8. But a few questions:
1 - How do I even check how much memory I have left on this computer?
2 - How do I check how many battery cycles are left?
3 - I want to upgrade to Microsoft Office '11 because I don't have Adobe Acrobat to creat pdf's and I need to be able to do this for school... Instead of buying acrobat, I figured I would just upgrade to Office '11 because I can generate pdf's from Word. Roughly how much RAM does Office '11 take up?
4 - Does Apple still make batteries for this computer (from '07)? How much do they cost?
5 - How much does 1 more GB of memory cost?
AND lastly -- is it even worth it to spend the $ on more RAM, a new battery and Office '11?
Or does it make more sense to just get a new computer entirely? (trying to avoid this).
ANY help would be sooo appreciated! Thanks.

1 - How do I even check how much memory I have left on this computer?
If you're asking how to check to see if you need more RAM, open Activity Monitor and go to the System Memory tab, then compare page outs and page ins.  If page outs is 10% or more of page ins, you probably need more RAM.
2 - How do I check how many battery cycles are left?
There's no limit on the number of battery cycles, it's just that the more cycles you've used the more "worn out" your battery gets.  You've got a 4-year-old machine, and if it's still got the original battery, it's probably about time for a replacement battery.  You can check battery health using System Profiler...  look at the Power section under Hardware.
3 - I want to upgrade to Microsoft Office '11 because I don't have Adobe Acrobat to creat pdf's and I need to be able to do this for school... Instead of buying acrobat, I figured I would just upgrade to Office '11
You don't need Office 2011 to create PDFs.  Any application capable of printing can create PDFs on a Mac.  Just choose File -> Print, but instead of clicking the Print button in the print dialog, click the PDF button and choose Save As PDF in the menu that appears.
4 - Does Apple still make batteries for this computer (from '07)? How much do they cost?
5 - How much does 1 more GB of memory cost?
I'll "ditto" sig's answers to these.
AND lastly -- is it even worth it to spend the $ on more RAM, a new battery and Office '11?
Or does it make more sense to just get a new computer entirely? (trying to avoid this).
If Office 2004 is still working fine for you, stick with that and don't incur the costs of Office 2011.  As to the RAM, only add more if the test I mentioned above indicates that you need it.  If you buy more RAM when you don't really need it, you won't see much (if any) performance improvement.  That just leaves the battery...  and if the machine is still doing what you need it to do and you don't really need a new machine for anything, you could definitely buy a new battery and get a few more years out of it.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • IMac G5 no longer able to use Microsoft Office 2004

I have had Microsoft Office 2004 installed on my G5 for several years but I am not able to access any of the Microsoft applications anymore. I get the following message when trying any of the Office applications: "Microsoft (Entourage, or whatever) has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." It provides an error report that can be sent to Microsoft which I have done several times.
I did a verify using the installed disk utility app and received the following message: "Volume bit map needs minor repair Macintosh HD" "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit" "1 HFS volume checked" "Volume needs repair."
The installed Disk Utility doesn't allow me to click on REPAIR. I have 118 GB available. If I use the Disk Utility on the install disk will it allow me to do a REPAIR to the HD and can I mess up anything else?
Any help I can get will be appreciated. I have some important stuff on Word that I would hate to lose.
Thanks in advance for any help offered.

In order for Disk Utility to work, it has to be on a differnet disk than the internal drive:
    Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then reboot from your internal drive and repair permissions.
It will not mess up any of your data.

  • Mac mini slow, especially with Office 2004

I just upgraded from an iMac flat screen to a 1.83 GHz Mac Mini. The move was easy and I'm not experiencing any major bugs, but for a lot of things I'm finding the mini slower than my old iMac. In particular, the two Office 2004 applications I use all the time, Word and Entourage, take a lot longer to open and move around in, with a lot of rotating rainbow time. I installed Office 2004 when I got the mini, but I'd transferred Office X over from the older computer. Would it help to take off Office X? Any ideas?
1.83 GHz Mac Min   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

As per the reply to your other post with the same question:
This is not something to worry about or be concerned with. Firstly, the paging counts will depend on how long the system has been running since the last boot, but MacOS is designed to actively page out and in, so in itself, the fact your system shows it is doing so means nothing at all.
If your computer is exhibiting some indication of a problem, I suggest you start a new thread here and describe what you are experiencing. That way we can help you directly with the specifics of your problem. On the other hand, if you have just seen the comments regarding paging and system performance and have checked your own Mac to see what it's doing - the answer is that in the absence of an indication of a problem, it's very likely doing exactly what it ought to be doing!

  • Design flaw in Microsoft Office 2004 - Anyone can get it for free!

    Hello all.
This is going to sound a bit strange, but I've been in the pub today giving my new MacBook owning friend a lesson in the joys of Mac goodness. One of the best things was discovering that I could use Bluetooth to beam across some of my favourite freeware application from my PowerBook to his MacBook. All small stuff, usually in the 5 - 10 megabyte range. I sent him a solitaire game, some media viewers, all the usual non-Apple things that make a Mac even more useful to run. I know, nothing strange so far, but bear with me.
My friend volunteered the question of whether Bluetooth would time out during the transfer of large files. An experiment was needed. I was also curious to find out if larger applications would beam across and still work. After all, if a 5 megabyte freeware app works when copied from my applications folder to his, would a larger piece of commercialware work as well? I mean, it shouldn't right? As a recent Mac switcher myself (5 happy months) I thought it would be appropriate to try a Microsoft application. I bought my PowerBook second-hand and I inherited a copy of MS Office that I've never used (and never will).
So here is the curious thing. I used Stuffit to compress the entire Microsoft Office 2004 folder. Minus Entourage, which I had already deleted as being surplus to requirements, the SIT file weighed in at a whopping 250 megabytes. I was very impressed to find out that it transferred across in a little over half an hour. No timeout limitation for large file transfers, Macs rock. I was however, extremely disturbed to discover the that unzipped file played perfectly well on my friend's computer. To clarify, by just copying across the entire Microsoft Office 2004 folder he was now in possession of a free, activated, and 100% working copy of the program. Surely this can't be right? I know that piracy is a major issue, and for Microsoft to just allow people to copy across the entire application means that a single copy released on a fileshareing network would be usable by an unlimited number of people potentially.
I would like to stress that I absolutely do NOT endorse piracy in any way. This was just a drunken experiment to see what would happen, and I'm reporting it here so that Microsoft and Apple can close this loophole and make sure that future versions of the application can be protected. This application retails at £350 and a simple copy and paste of the entire folder means it is available free for the pirates out there. It is not fair that some people should get for free what others have to pay a premium rate for.
My friend has deleted the copied program from his computer as neither of us wish to indulge in illegal activity. This was just an accidental discovery made during a casual "what if?" experiment. We did a search on Google (we are still in the pub as I write) and I can't find any mention of this having been found before. I hope the forum admins can bring this to the attention of someone higher up as I'm sure that it will be of great interest. It is bad enough that some people crack open applications for use by the less scrupulous out there, but this application is able to be freely copied by all and sundry. It might as well have a big "steal me" sign posted on the boxes.
Um, I'm guessing that as it is a Microsoft application that it is their mistake right? Just another reason why I am no longer running a Windows computer if this is an example of their attention to detail. It is breathtaking that some people are paying a huge amount of money for a program that can just be copied and pasted between computers.

That is the way Microsoft Office 2004 works. It's a drag and drop install of the folder itself. (Although, it's usually done from the install CD, not someone else's computer.) Any missing support files (not entire applications like Entourage, though) will re-install themselves the first time an Office application is launched. This is how Microsoft designed it, so it would be simple to install and self-repairing. The registration information is saved, somewhere, inside that folder.
If you wanted to alert someone, you should probably tell someone at Microsoft.
    -Doug
