An uneventful year... (aka no events for photos taken in 2006)

Have just installed iPhoto 08 and it has upgraded my library and created events for me.
However, no photos from between March 21 2005 and February 1 2007 show up in the Events or Photos views at all! I can see these photos in their albums but there is a huge hole between 2005 and 2007 everywhere else, and it only lists '830 photos in 30 events' at the bottom of the window (I know there are a couple of thousand normally). If i select all the photos in an album and ask iPhoto to create an event it pops up a confirmation, I confirm and it looks as if it has created an event (in any case it won't let me do it again, the option is greyed out), but I still cannot see these photos in Events/Photos.
I tried deleting the album in case a photos can't be in an Event and an Album at the same time but this resulted in not being able to see the photos of that album anywhere! Luckily I have a backup...
I have tried repairing permissions, rebuilding the library, and restoring the library from backup to give iPhoto another shot at it but nothing seems to work!
How can I fix this?

Simon:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Threre are two ways to correct that.
1 - use the Photo's->Batch Change menu option to change the date to what you want AND write that date to the files as well.
2 - use the Photos->Adjust Date and Time menu option.
Both do pretty much the same. I've not figured out the real differences between the two but there's bound to be one. I've been able to do multiple photos at a time with each.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Just imported photos taken today. The event should be at the end of the events. Instead it is near the beginning of the events, which were many years ago. Is there is fix for this?

  • GPS EXIF data corrupted for photos taken in portrait orientation

With photos taken in portrait orientation, the GPS data is corrupted for the photos in the modified folder, specifically, the longitude is changed from -83.435516 to 83.435516. Doesn't happen with all photos taken in portrait orientation, and I haven't seen it with any photos taken in landscape orientation and modified. I understand that iPhoto rotates portrait photos and places them in the modified folder when importing. When I look at the originals with Preview, their GPS data is OK, but the photos in the modified folder have incorrect information. Looking at the GPS data from within iPhoto doesn't show a problem, but that's probably because it doesn't refresh the EXIF data.
Anyway, is this happening to anyone else and is there a fix?
I'm concerned because I've spent all this time geocoding these photos, and now I don't know which ones have the correct data, and which ones are messed up.

    Larry,
I'll try that, just to be safe. I played with it some more and now I can't reproduce the problem even with auto-rotate on. So, maybe it was fixed with 7.1.4 and I'm still having problems because the photos were imported in a previous version. The release notes only say "addresses minor issues." Hard to tell what that's supposed to mean.
    Thanks!

  • HT201317 Photostream for photos taken with locked phone?

In this article, it says ALL photos will automatically be added to photostream when taken on the iOS device. But I think that's not true if you take photos with a locked phone (sliding up the camera icon on the password page instead of entering password)?

    Hi Stephen,
Yes I'm aware I need to connect to wifi to sync photostream. And when I do that some photos sync and some don't. It seems it's the photos taken with a locked phone that don't sync. Or maybe it's something else that just happen to occur at the same time, otherwise I can't understand why some sync and others don't. And there's no rhyme or reason, it's not the first or last that sync, it's some do and some don't "randomly".

  • Does photoshop have a simple date and time stamp for photos taken?

I am an enforcement office and require date and time to be printed on my photos. Does this app give me that feature?

    HI Lbheobrown,
I think this might be too specialized a feature to be something that every Photoshop Touch user would need/want. I went to the app store and just did a search for "timestamp" (no qoutes with the actual search). I did find some apps that read the metadata and can add timestamp info to photos. You might be able to timestamp your photos first with some other app then import the images into PS Touch.
Some of the apps I saw were
    - StampPhoto - added timestamp and geotagging location info (included a little map of the location on the photo itself)
    - phoTime - has a camera button in the app that adds the timestamp at the bottom as photos are taken
    - Timestamp It! - New and existing photo support, change text color, custom date and time entry support
You might investigate these further, all were in the $1 app price range
    Hope that helps,

  • Wrong sort order for Photos taken in rapid sequence

    Hi!
I have a number of Photos that are taken on the same second. These show up in what appear to be random order in the organizer. Is there any workaround for this, let´s say by first sorting on timestamp and then by file name (if timestamp is equal).
This must be a common problem with todays cameras taking a lot of photos in rapid sequence, but just timestaming them with a resolution of one second.
    Please help!
    Cheers!
    / Håkan

Thanks for the proposal, and yes, I could fix the problem in a number of ways, for instance by changing the timestamp of the pictures.
But as I see it, PSE 7 should have a built in feature for handling this issue. Frankly, handling this automatically should be one of the most basic features of the organiser. Any modern digital camera have the possibility to take several shots per second.
    Please Adobe, fix this !

  • HT201371 Why isn't there an album ONLY for photos taken by camera?

This is my first iPhone, and I find it extremely messy that my camera roll has so many pictures from everywhere:
    1- Pcitrues taken by camera
    2- Pictures saved through Safari
    3- Screenshots
4- and maybe some pictures saved through other Apps.
Why isn't there a way that all camera pictures can go into an album which no other app can use (including iOS' built-in apps such as Safari).
In Android for example, it was much easier...

It is just designed to use the computers ability to take off pictures as if it were a digital camera.
While we are all users here and cannot explain why they chose this route, my assumption is that many people already organize photos via some 3rd party program (Mac users use iPhone, many Windows users use Picasa etc), so they had the Camera Roll act as a digital camera when plugged in to allow users to maintain the same process of getting pictures and organizing that they are already use to using. If one things about it, it was a nice thing they did and not force users to use iTunes to get pics, then have to go to their other program and have to manually organize.

  • HT4355 Searching for Camera Model for photos taken and stored

    Hi there
I have a heap of photos stored on a hard drive.
I want to search for the photos that were taken with a particular camera.
Is there any way to do this on mac book pro.
It is not the file name, but the details of the file type and camera used to take the photo that I wish to locate.
It can be done on windows search, but not sure how on mac
    Thanks

MAX typically creates the ICD (and IID) files when you plug the camera in and it "finds" it.  Have you done this?  Does MAX "see" your camera?  Can you use MAX to snap a picture or a video?
If the answer to all these questions is "Yes", then MAX has probably made the files for you.  Look in the Public Documents (I'm assuming Windows), National Instruments\NI-IMAQdx\Data for the files.
There is one "gotcha" -- MAX should be able to find cameras plugged into a USB port on the PC, as well as cameras connected via TCP/IP on the local subnet.  If the camera is "discoverable" (meaning somewhere "near" on the network, but not perhaps within the local subnet), then MAX may not be able to find it.  Try plugging the camera in "near" your PC -- you can get MAX to make you the files that you need, but you'll need to modify them to reflect the "actual" IP address of the camera once you plug it in to the non-local subnet.  [We've complained to NI Vision people about this, but we still "do it by hand" when necessary ...].

  • Color correction for photo taken under abnormal lighting

I have a "problem image." It's a photo of an important man making a speech in the city where I live. It was an outdoor ceremony under a tent made of partly transparent white and red strips. It cast a slightly pinkish color on him. I tried a simple color correction, but pushing the control all the way toward cyan had no effect. Is there a method to handle this?

That photo is hugely oversaturated, with a small shift to magenta.  Use Image - Adjust - Hue/Saturation, then maybe bump up the contrast with Curves or Brightness/Contrast.
Finally, you might want to brush lightly over his face with the Dodge tool set to Midtones and Protect Tones to bring some fill light in.

  • Process Version 2012 for photos taken with Olympus OMD EM5

I have just purchased an Olympus OMD EM5. When I download images to Lightroom (v4.4) I have to manually convert to Process 2012. Am I doing something wrong? Why does this not happen automatically?

I can't tell you why it is doing that.  Are you applying a preset on import that includes the older PV?  Just a suggestion; you could create a preset that applies to the 2012 PV when images are imported.
Pardon my ignorance, but does that camera shoot DNG natively?  If it does, I wonder if it is using an older spec.  Don't know anything at all about this, just wondering.

  • How do I rename events in Photos?

Once I upload photos to my device on the iPad 2 with the camera connection kit, it gives me events with names like 2012-01-06 . I would like to know a simple way to change the name of the event from the iPad, because I don't have a computer I could sync it to.
    Thanks!

You can't rename them on the iPad, you can only chose the names of events for photos prior to syncing them from a computer.

  • Searching by Date photo taken

I am trying to use Spotlight to search for photos taken within a specific range. Nothing seems to work, however. The problem is that the Date Created field applied to the file itself and is different than the date recorded in the EXIF data and sometimes it is even blank. I have gone through the "other" items available in spotlight and tried "Date content created" and a few others, but nothing works.
Is it possible to search using spotlight for the date the photo was taken?

Automator can be used but it's not obvious (and it still involves the touch command)
Use one of the Finder "Get ..." or "Ask.." actions then use the "Run Shell Script" action from the Automator library and put in the commands for touch that you need. I tried it on a couple files on my system, it took a few tries to get the "touch" syntax right, but once you do, you're set and you can drop whole folders or multiple files onto it.
I don't use AppleScript but I assume it's possible to create a script that will change the file date stamps.
I checked the SanDisk card I use with my Kodak Easyshare camera and found that it also uses FAT16 and that it DOES record the file's creation and modified dates. I can only guess that your camera isn't recording these dates
We're getting off topic here though. You might want to try the Automator forum or check with Canons website to see if they have any FAQs about dates or using with Macintosh
I know it isn't a perfect solution, but hope it helps

  • How can organize photos by year?  by putting a folder inside of a folder?  So putting all of the events for one year under one folder so that it keeps them seperate?

Looking for help in organizing my photos.   I would like to organize them so that i can put all of the events for a year into one folder  (i would like to keep multiple events under a folder)?  Help please?!

    Like Larry suggested:
The top folder could be named 2011.  In it could be 12 smart folders each with the following criteria:
Date is in the range"  mm/01/yyyy to mm/31/yyyy.
So the 2011 folder would have 12 month smart albums each with the photos for that particular month.
Or you can use the search by date function at the bottom of the window to search by year, month, week or day.

  • When previewing images by clicking on the thumbnail in an Event for example, I've been finding that many images preview in a 'zoomed in' way so only a small part of the photos is previewed in a highly magnified view.

When previewing images by clicking on the thumbnail in an Event for example, I've been finding that many images preview in a 'zoomed in' way so only a small part of the photos is previewed in a highly magnified view.
Initially I could find no cause. Then I tried right click - Edit and on the affected images, always get this warning:
"Image Cannot Be Edited - This photo was previously edited with another application or with an early version of Iphoto. Duplicate this photo to edit it." and a "Duplicate To Edit" Button is displayed.
The external Editor defined for iPhoto is Adobe Photoshop Elements.
Now, I reckon the MUST be others out there affected by this same apparent Preview bug, yet my searches have not revealed any answers.  Also seems impossible to find a contact number for adobe???
