An unknown error occured (-200)

Hi, I tried to uninstall my itunes 7 so i could install itunes 6 due to skipping in itunes 7. After reinstalling itunes 6 and using an old itunes library (i would get an error message that the library was created by a newer version so i could not open itunes) my songs would not play. They were all listed but when i double clicked the song or clicked the play icon, nothing would play and the play icon would still appear rather than the pause icon. Now I tried reinstalling itunes 7 (i decided skipping is better than nothing) and i get an error message that says
The itunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occured (-200)
If anyone knows how I can play songs on itunes 6 again, or how to open itunes 7 i would really appreciate it. Thanks

So, is that like this error?

We have 3 iPod Minis and 1 Shuffle, and have been using iTunes successfully for nearly two years. We recently purchased a Video iPod, but before we could even connect it to our home computer, our iTunes application started acting up. I'm getting the following error message and am unable to open iTunes...
"The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-200)"
What does this mean and what changed? Thanks in advance for any support you can provide.

    iPodFan7611,
Your error message is a little bit different, but addressed in this knowledge base article:

Hi--I'm having trouble since my latest upgrade or even before that. I've tried removing and reinstalling iTunes and iPod but still keep getting the error message (-200). Can someone help? I'm unable to even open iTunes anymore, let alone manipulate my music in my playlists. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!!

the -200 is generally caused by a broken quicktime. (itunes requires a properly functioning QuickTime in order to work properly.)
    let's try this technique first.
head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly now?

  • The itunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred(-200)

I had an older version of itunes. Just got video ipod, and needed to install the newer version. Did so, and then my computer was screwed up. The fonts were wrong on the desktop and in Internet Explorer. So I did a restore back to before I installed newer version of itunes. installed the newer version again, and it won't open. I get the error message described in the subject heading. I tried uninstalling, reinstalling. Still no dice.

  • ITunes application cannot be opened.  Unknown error occured (-200)

`every time i try to open iTunes 7, this pops up. It worked fine until i tried to do a system restore to try and fix my computer for other reasons, and now it doesn't work. I've tried to reinstall iTunes 6.5 but everytime i try to open that, a message pops up talking about how it cant open because the music is only compatible with another, later version of iTunes. If possible, I really don't want to delete my music and have to restart my library all over again. I also think I would like to keep iTunes 7, but if I have to delete it to be able to listen to music again, I will. Please help me, I'm getting desperate!

Just goto control panel>add and remove and uninstall itunes AND quicktime (You will not loose music) then reboot
Go here (Disable antivirus)and install "Quicktime WITHPOUT iTunes" http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Now disable antivirus and goto apple,.com to install itunes 7

  • Unknown error occured (-200)... Help!!!

Every time I try to open iTunes, this is the message that pops up. Does any one know what to do. I've tried reinstalling and restoring my computer, but I can't seem to get anything to work. Ideas? please. Thank you!

Ok, for all of you who are experiencing this problem, i found the solution:
    1. Open control panel and select 'Add/Remove programs'
    2. Remove Quicktime
    3. Install Quicktime on the Apple website
    4. After finishing the installation, iTunes should work.
P.S. The only problem I'm experiencing now is a duplication of all my songs.

  • ITunes 7 Unknown Error Msg (-200)

I have downloaded iTunes 7, but everytime I try to open it, I get this error message:
"The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-200)."
I don't know what to do! Any suggestions?

"The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-200)."
the -200 is caused by a problem with your QuickTime. (iTunes needs a fully functional QuickTime in order to work properly.)
the first thing we'll try is a careful standalone QT 7.1.3 reinstall.
download and save a copy of the QT 7.1.3 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
Quicktime 7.1.3 Installers … get the one that doesn’t mention itunes
if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?
(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

  • UNKNOWN ERROR OCURRED (-200)

After updating my iTunes yesterday I haven't been able to make the program work. I try "system recovery" AND EVERY SINGLE THING that appears in this web site and it doesn't work... not even with the old version...
Tried again today... and just appears the same:
The iTunes application Could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-200)
    CAN ANYBODY HELP ME???????
I have windows xp and I have updated windows at least twice from yesterday.

SInce you've done a system restore, you need to update windows, then update from the PC makers site.
Unistall itunes AND quicktime from the control panel>add and remove.
Go here and roll dow to "Clean up iTunes installer files on the computer" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
Then disable antivirus and download/install iTUnes again
Then install "Quicktime WITHOUT iTUnes" http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

  • Unknown Error Occured (1429)

I recieved a NEW ipod upon request after have a malfunctioning one returned with my ONE YEAR WARRANTY!
Now this ipod, no more than a month after receiving it has shown me Unknown Error Occured (1429). It has not been dropped with exceptions to a few knocks. My MAC wont restore it because this unknown error shows up as well as when I try other computers. Assist is desperatly needed because it just seems to me like these new apple products have a weaker tolarance every generation!
Please help this very concerned customer and if there is not an appropriate way to solve this issue, am I covered on the RENEWED model with like a month warranty since I used the one year warranty?

I get kind of verbose about all the steps I take, so basically try a restore from an older version of the Apps/Utilities/iPod Software Updater. I used version 2005-06-26. Continue reading if you want my full, fun story. My iPods are back to factory settings and functioning, but I have not tried to update/sync from iTunes yet. Baby steps.
I hope I can explain what I did correctly (since I tried so many things and on 2 non-functioning 4th gen 40gb iPods both purchased Christmas 2004), but here goes nothing:
First, one of our ipods just stopped working. It sounded like the HD was caught in a loop (repetitive clicking, whirring, and restarting). I took it to a "Genius" at an Apple store and he looked at it and plugged it in and clicked his mouse around, took it to their back room for a few minutes and came back and pronounced that the HD was bad and the best I could do was either "trade in" for the recycling fee of 25% or pay upwards of $200 to have it repaired (this was in Aug sometime). I was so mad I just kept the ipod. After all I still had one functioning unit that I could use. I could keep the other for spare parts/battery whatever.
Anyway, yesterday while updating some of the music I just added to my iTunes library (v7.0.2(15)), iTunes locked up... my whole computer, so I did a hard reboot. After that, the ipod was stuck (keep in mind this leaves me with 2 broken iPods). So now I'm really mad (determined to fix). So I read some of these posts, try the restore from iTunes, keep getting the 1429 error, tried to basic erase from Disk Utility (failed), tried to secure erase - zero out data (failed - probably because my computer went to sleep - I let it go overnight). So lets pause on unit 2.
And come back to unit 1. In Aug I didn't do my research as I really didn't know where to start - I never got any errors to search the forums with and I was kind of lazy - afterall I still had one working ipod. Anyway, this time I tried putting the ipod into disk mode and it worked! I saw a ray of hope. Since my Mac was busy with iPod 2, I hooked iPod 1 up to my PC, that hadn't been online in a while and has an older version of iTunes & the iPod software. The PC recognized the device as an iPod and restored (I did the AC plug in) and the unit booted up just fine! Imagine my delight!
So back to unit 2 - it's processing overnight, I wake up, and see that it has failed, try to hook it up to my PC and it is recognized as a disk but not an iPod, so it won't restore. But I think maybe the trick is to restore using an older iPod Updater. So I bring it back to my Mac, go to Apps, Utilities, iPod Software Updater and select the oldest one I have on file (2005-06-26). I have unit 2 hooked up via fire-wire, in disk mode, and double click the app to open it. It tells me that I have an iPod plugged in, but not mounted (at least it recognizes that it's an iPod), so I click the restore button (get all the usual windows - auth, double ok's on the restore, etc.). It restores with no errors and the iPod mounts on the desktop, but the unit is still showing the do not disconnect sign and I'm just not sure, so I click restore again to let it go through that process again. The ipod mounts again and still says do not disconnect. So I eject it from the desktop and the iPod changes to the big check-mark with the OK to disconnect (disk mode) screen. That changes to the AC plug in screen (another delightful moment). I plug it in to the AC outlet, it finishes it's restore and I'm back to 2 clean-slate iPods!.

  • Help - An unknown error occurred (-50)

For the last few weeks I have been getting 'An unknown error occurred (-50)' when trying to download new purchases or updates via iTunes, can anyone help?
I've tried every solution I have encountered all with no success.  Off the top of my head I've checked the firewall and antivirus, tried deleting partial downloads in the iTunes folder, uninstalled the one download accelerator I had, tried a winsock reset, uninstalled and re-installed iTunes and still no luck.  This is driving me nuts, I can download everything fine on our iPad or iPhones and then sync these to our laptop but virtually any file over 20Mb seems to fail with the above error when downloading on the laptop.  I'm running iTunes on Windows 7 x64.
    Any help much appreciated.

No matter what I tried I could not get this resolved.  The latest iTunes update seems to have addressed the issue, downloaded over 200 updates and several HD series without a glitch so far.
