An update was downloaded without my permission, and it says Install pending... how do I prevent it from installing?

I made the mistake of clicking "check for updates" because it instead downloaded the update. I have my settings set to "check for updates but let me choose whether to install them" but the "Check for Updates" button does not allow me to choose... they're downloaded immediately.
This is a serious violation of my trust in Firefox and I will not allow these updates to be installed. If I can't stop them... I will uninstall Firefox and wash my hands of Mozilla permanently.

The check for update but don't don't install only applies to automatic updates. It doesn't apply if you click the update button yourself. Also, running such an old version of Firefox leaves you at serious risk for attack or loss of personal information. You should update to 16.0.2 immediately to stay secure.

You should never update without making sure that everything is on your computer and backed up.

Firefox downloaded an update against my option preference; how do I prevent it from installing?

I had my options set to ask me before downloading or installing updates. I was delaying downloading 4.0.1 until the issue with Norton Toolbar is resolved. Today, Firefox downloaded the update anyway and will install the next time I restart Firefox. How do I prevent the installation? And how did my options get changed to automatically download and install, as I later discovered. I am POSITIVE that I did not change them and the update had been asking to install prior to today.

I have had a verizon cell phone for 13 years and have gotten your cable/internet/phone when i moved out on my own because i had been so happy with the experience i had with the cell phone service. i ordered my new iPhone 6 on October 6th along with my husband. i was told by the sales associate at the vierzon store where i placed the order that it would ship a week before halloween. instead of a shipping confirmation, i received an email a week before halloween letting me know that my order had been placed on 10/24/14. i thought this was weird, but figured i could weight another week or two, no big deal. my husband got his phone in the mail yesterday. still no sign of mine. then this morning i got an email letting me know that my order was cancelled and if id like to place another order for a phone, then i can go back to the store and do so. why would i want to go through another month of this??? verzon lost my order. i never canceled it and i am beyond annoyed. i am looking to switch my entire house to another provider. this is ridiculous.

i did not get any reasons or explanations. the email just stated that my order was canceled and that it won't be posted to my credit card (i have more than enough to cover the cost, so that is not the issue). also my husbands phone was paid for from the same card moments before me. my balance is always paid automatically and on time. so that couldn't be the reason either. that's what so frustrating is because they didn't explain what happened. this is what the email read exactly:
"This email is to confirm that your order has been cancelled; you have not been billed for this merchandise.

A web site has been downloaded without my permission and is the site which my computer opens onto and hard to exit. How can I remove this for good?

Web site IMUV downloaded by grandson. The site opens up at the beginning of each session when computer is started. It is an annoyance and inconvenience to exit the program and I have been unsuccessful in deleting it at all. I would like to open up with either the Yahoo main page.

How do I prevent Firefox from installing a new version when I click on the "Check for New Version" button? And why does it even do this?

I check for updates manually and this is frustrating because I can't stop it once it starts. There is no "Cancel" button or anything that will stop the update.

I do have to say it is kind of ridiculous for them to remove the "There is an update. Do you want to install it?" that every other application uses. Even FF plug-ins use one. Checking for an update should not automatically install it.
That is bad enough, but removing the "Cancel" button during the update download is one for the ages. Whatever happened to "user-friendly"? I guess they know what we need better than we do.

My Adobe Flash settings (which must be edited online, for some stupid reason) are set to notify me if a download is available, but there IS NO SETTING for "do not download until I consent".
Norton has informed me that 'pepflashplayer.dll' has downloaded without my permission. How do I prevent Flash from downloading or installing updates without my permission? I would gladly grant it as soon as I verified that it really is a Flash update, but I am simply not comfortable with ANY software downloading or installing updates on its own, without the consent of the computer user.
How can I stop this from occurring?

I helped launch Norton Insight - so I can provide a little insight here.
Insight identifies executables by making a digital "hash" of the file. It then tracks how that file behaves on your system - does it lead to crashes, does it use lots of resources, is it associated with potentially malicious behavior (such as downloading files without permission, changing security settings - about 400 different behaviors). It reports back Symantec - data it collects from 50 or 60 million users. This is what Symantec calls the file's "reputation". It uses an algorithm to rate the safety of the file based on behaviors, the file's source and on how many people use the file without showing signs of infection.
So insight is a way to detect malicious code - or files infected with malicious code, even files Symantec has never seen before.
If the file changes, even if one byte changes, the hash will no longer match and it will be considered a new file. So only 5 people are using that exact version of the file - but many other versions of that file could be used by many other people.

Why does Apple update my apps without my permission

Last night I was syncing my iPhone. After syncing I noticed that many of my Apps had been updated!
I have several apps on my iPhone that I did not wish to update, and in typical Apple fashion is very difficult to go back to previous versions.
How can I prevent Apple from updating apps without my permission?

The only way to update apps is for the user to initiate an update. Are you syncing to iCloud? At a Mac/PC via USB or wifi? If by USB, you need to go to the update tab and choose individual apps or all those that need updating. So please tell us which method of syncing you are using. Maybe there is a setting that I'm not aware of that updates automatically when syncing.
For security reasons I do not use iCloud. I am syncing with a USB cable.
I tried to uncheck all of my apps. I received a warning that any/many apps that were not checked would be deleted.
I synced using iTunes. I didn't know there was any other way.
I am using a Mac with 10.6.8 (was using 10.7.2 but switched back.)

My phone said that it can be updated, everything was ok, the update downloaded and some preparations were made according to the status message on the phone. Then suddenly the update/preparation stopped and the phone shows the following error message: 'The update was downloaded, but couldn't be opened. (8007000d)'.
Does anyone have any idea what could it be?

The same. The phone finds the update, downloads it, prepares to install, and once the preparation gets to 100%, gives the same error message. I tried to do it after a reboot, but the situation is the same.
What is interesting for me is that during the preparation phase the prograss bar stops at 81% for a while, then jumps directly to 95%. Then 96-97-98-99-100, and the same error...
Now, I'm making factory reset, hope it helps.
UPDATE: The same happened after factory reset.

I just downloaded the latest itunes and i cant figure out how to update my iphone apps on my computer now. I go to the toolbar on the top and press search for updates and it tells me that the latest version of itunes is already downloaded or that there are no updates available at this time. Previously, i would be able to go to the apps page on itunes and then press search for updates and then download all. Then I would sync with my phone and both phone and computer would be updated. Now I can only update on the phone and I know Im going to encounter where it tells me the info for downloading is too large to do it on your phone, hence my first question.....where do I go to update my apps on my computer????

While you're in itunes, with the leftside window open, click on Apps. Then, look across the top middle of your itunes screen. You will see several choices: All, Iphone/iPad Touch, Ipad, Ipod Games, List, and Updates.
Clicking on each of these gives you a different view.
When you select ALL you will see all of your apps. When you select Updates you sill see only the apps that need to be updated. When you are in Updates you will see the Update button in the lower right corner.

Can anyone help me

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your iPod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
All media content will be erased during the first sync, but you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.

If you are talking about your Apple ID password, make sure it IS your apple ID.
In the past 24 hours, I have received two emails "How to reset your Apple ID password". I had not requested any change and I finally realized someone else is trying to reset the password. I have had this Apple ID since 2009 so I am not using someone else's ID.
Again, if you are not receiving the email to reset make sure you have the right ID - it might be going to the email linked to the account, and it might not be yours.
