ANALOG AUDIO CAPTURE NEEDS RENDERING?

I am capturing analog VHSC tapes via a Sony HVR-M25U to do the A/D conversion. My inport settings are standard DV using DVCPRO. When I add my captured footage to the timeline, I see the red rendering line and I hear the blips as I playback, after rendering the clip plays fine. Is there a setting I can change to avoid the rendering? Thanks!

Well, generally if your captured audio isn't exactly 48kHz, you'll have sync/drift issues...but not a need to render.
Your settings look correct.
You might try doing an 'Export as AIFF' from FCP, then bring that audio back in and replace the original. See if that fixes the render issue.
How many tracks of audio are you working with and what are your 'User Preferences' regarding number of RT audio tracks...that could be it as well.
How long are the captures? Extended captures can give you the odd audio rates (48.011). Only solution there is to capture in chunks of say 20 minutes or so.
If you have the hardware, you might try dubbing the old tapes to MiniDV and capturing from those. This takes more time, costs more money, but then you should have solid workable timecode, should you ever need to recapture the media.
Capture now/non-controllable creates it's own timecode, which will never capture identically again.

  • PAL CAPTURE NEEDS RENDERING?

Hi, I have been editing in SD NTSC since I purchased FCP and now have my first opportunity to work with PAL footage. I have a miniDV PAL tape that I captured with a Sony DSR-11 switched to PAL. I set the Sequence Preset in FCP to DV PAL 48K and the capture preset the same. When I drop the captured footage onto the timeline, there is a red line indicating the whole thing needs to be rendered? I can scrub but not play. I am sure I am missing something. Thanks.

Did you change your Easy Setup AFTER you launched FCP?
If so...trash SEQUENCE 1...create a new sequence and use that.
Sequence 1 is set for the settings that were in place when you launched FCP.

  • Sequence is DV-PAL, clips are DV-PAL, but Audio needs rendering in Timeline

    Hello everyone.
I'm just getting started with FCE 4. Here's my problem: i set up FCE with the easy configuration to work in DV-PAL. Then i copied some clips i had captured with iMovie 06 from an old project file to another folder on my external firewire harddrive. I then imported these clips into FCE. These clips are also in DV-PAL, since they came from a DV-camcorder. The videotrack is fine, but the audiotracks are only played back in the viewer but not in the canvas/timeline. All i get there are the beeps, which indicate they have to be rendered. If i do render them, the audiotracks are played back in the timeline as well, but from what i've read in this forum and elsewhere, rendering shouldn't be necessary at all when the sequence and videoclips have the same format. Any ideas why the audiotracks need rendering?
    Thanks and regards, Thorsten

    Hi there!
Fortunately, importing iMovie footage was only some kind of quick way to get at least some footage into FCE to experiment with. I only got FCE a few days ago and had no new Footage on tape, so i thought i might as well use already captured video files. I know better now and won't mix up any projects. Although i have some very useful plug-ins for iMovie like the gee three image stabilization. That's something that (as far as i know) FCE can't do. So i do think about using both programs. Not on whole projects, but probably on single clips. Like working on shaky footage in iMovie, then exporting it as a single clip in QuickTime so that FCE can work with it. Could be a little too much hassle, though. I'll see when i try it.
    Best regards,
    Thorsten

  • Captured clips that need rendering ?

    Hello,
Anyone have any idea why my clips all need rendering after capture.
Its just DV Pal shot 16:9 - what could the problem be ?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
    Peter

... what could the problem be ?
The sequence settings don't match the clips. If they do, you don't need to render.
If you have FCP 6 or 7, create a new sequence (doesn't matter what easy preset you use) and drop one of the captured clips into it. When FCP asks you if you want to change the sequence settings to match the clip, say yes.
If you are working on FCP 5 or earlier, create a new sequence using the DV/PAL 16:9 anamorphic preset. If that is what you really captured, you should not have to render.

  • Newly Captured Clips Need Rendering--why?

I've seen similar questions posted about things needed rendering when it seems they shouldn't...but none of the answers seem to help me and none are exactly the same, so...
    Here's my dilemna:
I've been using Final Cut Pro on a G4 Power Mac with a 1.25gig processor and 1 gig of RAM and it's been fine for my purposes. Even though I've been using high def video, newly caputres clips don't need rendering until I start working with them (as they shouldn't).
BUT...I've tried installing the same software on both a MacMini and a PowerBook G4 (each having the same speed processor) and with both alternate computers a newly captured high def clip will appear with a red bar over it, I won't be able to preview anything but a still, and rendering will take about 7 minutes per half minute of video. My question is why?
It's primarly the PowerBook I want to get going on Final Cut so I can edit wherever I am, but I can't work with it if I need to render every fresh clip. Two small differences : (1) My PowerBook only has 756 megs of RAM as opposed to a full gig on the PowerMac. (2) I'd done other projects on the PowerMac with FinalCutExpress before getting Pro, so maybe there was a codec already installed on that one that I need on the PowerBook.
If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it. It seems like what works with one 1.25 gig processor should work the same with similar chips on different computers, but it doesn't...

Quite right, David (and Jerry). My problem was indeed a matter of the setup not matching the formatting of the clips. I had a hard time understanding that this was the problem because EVERYTHING seemed to work on the PowerMac and NOTHING on the PowerBook (or MacMini which I set up with FinalCut to see if the PowerBook was to blame.)
I guess it was just a matter of being lucky that the PowerMac's setup was correct for what I was doing and unlucky that the PowerBook's was not. Anyone experiences similar confusion may also be helped by a Shane tutorial I found in a separate thread--

In Final Cut Pro, go to the menu Help and select Final Cut Pro Help.
When the widow opens, select the Final Cut Pro 7 User Manual.
When that opens, search for "Options for Displaying Duplicate Frames"
    Hope this helps.

  • Newly captured clips need rendering

    Hi,
I'm having a problem with a project, with the clips I'm capturing they need to be rendered before I can view them in the sequence.
This has only started happening today, previously there were no problems, the clips I've already captured play fine, it's only new clips that need rendering for no apparent reason.
What do you think the problem is?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

you have a mismatch between your captured clips and the sequence settings.
something has changed in your capture settings since before when it was working
select one of the new clips in the browser (or timeline) and press Cmd-9
take a look under the Format tab ... what Compressor is it using? What Frame Rate? note down all thesed settings
now select one of the older (good) clips in the browser (or timeline) and press Cmd-9
take a look under the Format tab ... what Compressor is that one using? What Frame Rate? note down all these settings
... compare the two lists, somewhere there will be a mismatch
you need to change your capture settings to match the older clips settings
equally, you could select the sequence in the browser (or just select the timeline window) and press Cmd-0...what are the settings here?
these settings need to match the properties of your source media, otherwise you will need to render
to change your capture settings, the easiest option is to use Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup..
just choose the correct setup from the list and then recapture the new footage

  • No output sound from output port/analog audio: Need help

hello, I want to connect my analog audio equipment to my iMac. I have done this in the past with my old G3. I have connected the RCA cables to a 3.5 mm jack and put it into the audio input port, which was what worked on the G3. When I open the sound page for input & output, on Output I can see the volume bar thing moving in relation to the sounds from mic, turntable, etc: all the analog audio things. However, there is no actual output of sound through the iMac;s speakers or a headphone. The output page is pretty simple so I am real sure I have all the rigt things checked, unchecked etc. Any ideas? Thanks.

I had what sounds like a similar problem to jazzzrat. i had my macbook setup to a stereo and it worked for over a year. suddenly no sound came out of the stereo. in my case, it definitely was a software setup thing.
plug in your stereo jack into the audio out port. then go to system preferences-->sound-->output. on there you should see, under "device for sound output": Name=Headphones, port=built-in output. (if you see name=built in speakers, you plugged in the wrong plug). Now go down to the bottom of the window and UNcheck the "mute" box, and make sure the volume slider is midway or more.
For some reason, mac allows you to mute the "headphones" and "built in speakers" selectively. we have no idea how that box got checked, that remains a complete mystery. but when we eventually found -- and unchecked -- the box, our stereo output came back just fine.
i hope this works for you. good luck and have a good new year.

In FCE, trying to capture VHS via DV converter box. The sound is not coming over. In system settings/scratch disk (internal hard drive) the audio capture is grayed out. Analog RCA composite video & stereo audio connectors in place. How do I get my sound?

You can't get audio during capture as firewire has control.
Use the audio from the play device if you need to hear what's happening. You will notice latency on the FCE capture window, that's normal as well.

  • Converting analog audio to MP3/WAV using Garageband

I'd like to use Garageband to convert analog audio (reel-to-reel, cassette, LP) to MP3/Wav formats. What kind of audio capture device do I need for the iMac in order to do this and where are they available?

for a cassette or open reel, the line-OUT is fine, for a turntable you need the RIAA curve of a dedicated Phono input.

  • Kona/Blackmagic HD audio capture

Okay, I feel stupid for having to ask this, and I'm fairly confident I could figure it out if I had a card in hand, but:
What is the workflow to get audio from a camera (specifically a Canon XLH1) through a Kona or Blackmagic card while capturing to DVCPRO HD?
I've been considering purchasing a card for a while now, but I'm completely lost as to how this actually works. I'm the kind of guy who learns by doing, so what I've seen on-line hasn't helped. What have you guys done?
I'm leaning toward a Kona 2 for my "old" G5.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks so much!
    ~Luke

Well with a Kona LH series card, you'd take the analog component outputs and analog audio outs to the input of the card, and then select DVCPROHD as the capture preset. AJA doesn't make Kona 2's anymore...
If you were to buy one though, you'd need an analog to SDI converter to capture the video with, and an analog to digital audio converter to convert the audio to digital... the LH card would have these inputs without any other converters.

  • AppleTV audio out to old amp with only analog audio

I'm thinking about getting the Apple TV for both video and for playing my music on my home stereo system. I currently have an old amp with only analog audio capabilities, but the new ATV looks like it only supports digital optical out, and the digital to analog converters I've looked for seem pretty expensive. How can I get the audio from my music collection (iTunes) to play wirelessly through ATV through my amp?
I currently also have an Airport Express which I use for audio, but I was thinking of selling that and just using the ATV since the ATV can essentially do the same thing as the AX with added video benefit. I've seen some threads on streaming audio from the ATV to the AX, but do I really need both? Seems like there should be another way.
I was thinking of connecting the ATV to my TV via HDMI cable for audio, and then using an analog audio out from the TV to my amp. But, if I'm correct, that would only provide me with sound coming from the TV. It wouldn't give sound out from iTunes, for example. Is that right?
    Are there any other options?

Followings are my observations in audio streaming with Apple TV 3 and Airport Express through AirPlay protocol:
-- Apple TV 3 come with only digital audio outputs through HDMI and optical SPDIF outputs. If you connect optical link from the optical output to optical input of any DAC and HDMI cable from the HDMI output to HDMI input on TV set, audio output will be transmitted through both digital outputs. Thus is is not necessary to turn on TV set unless visual feedback is required. There is no audio analog line output for Apple TV 3.
-- AirportExpress come with single combo mini jack (digital + analog) for audio output regardless of old/new models. You can connect either digital optical link (with Mini/Toslink adaptor) to digital input of DAC or analog line cable (inferior) to analog line input of amplifier. When analog line is used, digital-to-analog conversion is done by DAC built into AirportExpress for which do not expect quality is as good as most external DAC models. What do you expect from a single-chip DAC implementation vs standalone DAC models cost few thousand dollars ? Moreover analog line is susceptible to interference more than digital line.
So the decision to use Apple TV or AirportExpress, analog or digital transmission for audio streaming depends on whether you need WiFi base station features of AirportExpress to establish wireless network and quality of your audio system to justify all-digital audio transmission. Followings are what I use in audio streaming from iMac/iPad mini /iPhone 5 to audio system in living room. Quality of audio output is comparable with Sonos Zone Player as audio source.

  • Splitting front & back panel analog audio

    Hello,
I'm new to arch linux, and I'm trying to reproduce what I was doing using Windows: I have my headphones and my speakers always connected to my computer, and I switched output "by the OS" whenever I wanted to.
Here, in arch linux, I see I have (in gnome sound panel) the two analog outputs I'd like to switch to when necessary: headphones and line-out.
However, both of them seem to output audio only to headphones.
    I've tried different things:
    - If I remove Auto-Mute, I can have the audio output on both front and back panel. However, if I re-enable it, I just have front panel analog audio
    - I've tried this, without impact: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … ont.2Frear
I guess it's not a real problem with pulse audio but more with drivers. However, I don't know how to fix it.
    Would profiles help? http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Softwar … /Profiles/
I doubt it, but if it's the way to go, I'd like to learn about it.

Indeed, they are both plugged at the same time, and I want to select my "unique" output.
MSC wrote:One thing you could try is muting the headphone output before switching to line out in PulseAudio, or vice versa. See also if you can control the volume independently - can you turn the headphone volume all the way down without also silencing the speakers?
I can't control them independently. Turning the volume down for headphones silences the speakers.
MSC wrote: Failing that, is auto-mute the only setting your card provides, or are there others? IIRC Gnome hides a lot of switches by default; you can see the full list of settings by running alsamixer in a terminal. You should also look over the ALSA page on the wiki if you haven't already. My guess is that it's not an issue with the hardware itself, but rather some setting that needs to be toggled.
I don't see much more in alsamixer... I've tried toggling everything up/down, the only way to output on the speakers (back panel) is to switch Auto-Mute on/off.
In the alsa page, I only see that part as relevant: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AL … g_speakers However, it's for HDMI, which is not the case here.
    Maybe changing alsa model?
    I'm kinda lost...
