Analog capture into DV format. Why such small files? Why the poor quality?

I am capturing 8mm video cassettes with an "ADVC 3000" converter, using an S-Video into the converter and then via FireWire into my PowerMac G5.
All is almost going well, but the files seem to take up so little space on my Hard Drive. That's a good thing, but I'm wondering if it's recording into Digital Video or not since the files seem so small. Smaller than normal for DV at least, or maybe I'm just paranoid.
In the scratch files, when I press Command-I for information, the Codecs on the QuickTime files are DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, Interger (Big Endian), Timecode.
So I'm guessing they are DV files even though they look like crap.
My question is this though. When I put these old analog tapes on iDVD, burn it, and put it in my DVD player, the quality of my video looks pretty crappy on my hi-def television. But when I watch them on my computer in a tiny window (the tinier the better), the video looks great. A large window, or my Television, gives a bad picture. My theory is that it's my hi-def television and computer monitor, and that on an old Analog TV set, the videos would look much sharper.
Should I play 8 mm analog video, converted to DV in Final Cut Pro, on an older Analog T.V. set for best viewing results?
Anyone have any comments to share on the science of this?

Forgive me if you did know this, the TBC is a Time Base Corrector. (I am pretty sure corrector is right). Anyway, the 8mm has time code striped on it with the image information. If the playback device is not able to read the time code, the picture quality suffers. (remember tracking adjustments?).
The TBC will intercept the time code coming from the tape and provide accurate, consistent time code to the system. I use one from DataVideo, and have been happy with it whenever I have to work with old tapes. If you have a lot of tapes to capture, you might look into one.
My two disclaimers: this is a very general explanation, I simply don't know the physics of what's going on, and secondly I am not a power user of FCS, but have gotten so much from this forum I am trying to give a little back. Take what I bring to the table with that in mind - I'm proficient, but not an expert.

Why the Poor Run Time Refresh Quality?

Good day,
I've developed a little piece of software to monitor a small amount of inputs from NI DAQ hardware (4 inputs). On my developing computer, everything looks fine but this is not the case on the Run Time computer. Usually the software starts looking fine, but when anything gets redrawn (whether it be from a button press or from another window being placed over it), the image quality is poor. Kinda looks like the color palet in whatever redrawn area gets dropped to 8-bit. I notice this only in the Labview application. Everything else on the PC looks fine when redrawn. Attached is a little image that compares two buttons, the top one having been redrawn. Note the quality difference.
Developed in LV 7.1. Using the RT drivers installed from the NI-DAQmx driver disc (v8.3) (RT 7.1.1)
I've tried rebuilding my app, re-installing my app, re-installing all NI software (on the RT computer), updating video drivers.
Any ideas and help as always will be most appreciated.

Sorry I didn't respond right away. Got busy on other matters and this issue slipped my mine. Developements have happened...
On coming back to this project, the HD on my laptop died (development comp). Never had any display issues on this machine (was previously posting about issue on computer where app will be run from, where issue still exists). After re-installing everything on my new HD, I'm now experiencing this problem on my development laptop as well.
I'm using an IBM Thinkpad T30 (P4-M, 2.0GHz, 256MB, ATI 7500 Mobility). So it used to display fine on this machine, now it doesn't, and I'm experiencing the same symptoms: grainy display from what appears to be a lower resolution colour palette (maybe 256).
Here too, this is only an issue within the development environment. The startup Labview splash screen looks fine (again LV7.1), the blue bar along the top of all windows transitions from the darker shade of blue to the lighter shade, properly. This issue is on the toolbar and in the developement area within Labview only.
It's weird how this appears to just come or just go. I don't remember who, but somebody here mentioned how their problem just stopped as suddenly as it started. And as this is localized to LV, I'm inclined to think this is not the video card, but perhaps some file/driver/dll that perhaps gets modified/updated without direct visibility. I briefly had this issue aswell on an older Toshiba laptop about a year ago, but it eventually "fixed" itself aswell (don't remember model/specs of older Toshiba).
Anymore help and research into the issue will be most appreciated.

Why the poor previews?

I'm really enjoying LR3 but a few things are very annoying imo. I'm sure this has been addressed (and answered) before but I can't find it.
When I open/zoom an image from the Library grid the preview looks poor and unsharp. Only when I zoom in 1:1 and back the preview looks good. Why is this? I have set the the Preview Quality on 'high' and on 1440 pixels, the size of my screen.
Also, when I work with the adjustment brush in Develop for a while LR seems to get slower and slower and not able to keep up with what I do. Arrgghh...
My ThinkPad laptop is brand new with an Intel Core i5, 4Gb and 7200rpm HD and should be speedy enough.

I take special care to make certain each picture is in the format it should be in before letting it go, but PSE 10 has a mind of its own and frequently overrules me. Maybe once Halloween is over and April Fools Day has past, whatever demons have taken hold of it will R.I.P once more. To quote the Raven, "Don't count on it."

Drag and Drop a .mov into iMovie and, Why the wait?

Alright. This is getting very annoying. Every time I use iMovie, dragging my .movs into the application, I've got to wait about 12-15 minutes for it to "import" it. This is ridiculous. Since I've got 7 .movs to import, it's going to take me a couple hours "tonight" just to import them. Will have to do editing "some other day."
I'm I doing something wrong. What's with the waiting?

.mov is a container, no video codec. a mov can contain dozends of codecs, stills, music, aiff, mp3, aac, qtvr, video, h263, h264, sorenson1/2/3, mpeg1/2/4, divx ... etc.
iMHD6 is a DV-editor, meant to copy (=import lossless) from miniDV devices.. which use 'dv' as codec.
so, if your .mov contain anything else than dv+specific NTSC/PAL settings, the underlying Quicktime engines has to convert it.. a process of high computation = time.
plus, depending on your set-up, that process can take more or less time.. e.g. not enough disk-space 'brakes' the apps ...

The AutoNumLgl field numbers paragraphs for legal and technical publications. This field is considered obsolete but is provided for compatibility with Microsoft Word 2000 and earlier versions.
Microsoft recommends that you use the ListNum field in place of the AutoNumLgl field when using Microsoft Word 2013, Word 2010, Word 2007, (Ref. Field codes: AutoNumLgl field - Word )
This is a known issue with Acrobat failing to convert the AutoNum fields.

True, PSB is the only format will take it to those limits, iirc. I didn't think he was anywhere near it. I wonder how portable it is? Do programs outside of Photoshop read it? I'm thinking if you needed it printed professionally.
What amount of ram should you have for a 10 GB psb? What is the recommended scratch space?

One thing about PSB is Mac/PC thumbnails. Since Apple is not rendering them yet. Quicklook does that. Ardfrey codec for Windows when you need it at the desktop level.

"Bad data format" when reading txt file from the presentation server

I have a piece of code which reads a txt file from the presentation server to an internal table like below:

When running this code, exception BAD_DATA_FORMAT is issued.
Is it because of the file encoding or delimiter or other reason?

Why the poor wifi performance on iPhone 5

I am using my iPhone 5 and five feet away my wife has her new iPad. Both on the same wifi. The iPad is showing three bars but the iPhone 5 goes from two to none. It sometimes looses all wifi signal and drops off to cellular. I thought one of the recent upgrades to the iOS was supposed to fix wifi reception problems on the iPhone 5.
Any solutions?

Some added info for my question. We have an Airport Extreme on our computer and an Airport Express in the area where we sit to improve the signal. My wife's iPad is about six feet away from the Express; I am about two feet. Her signal has to go through me so I think the iPhone reception should be stronger.

I finished making an animated .gif image in FireWorks. My question is, how do I convert it into video so that when I edit video, that every video editing program recognizes it? Long story short, How do I convert animated .gif files into video formats?

I worked in Adobe FireWorks to make the animated .gif. What program do I use to convert the file from .gif to any video format: .mp4, .m4v, .avi, .wmv, etc. I want to convert it into video format, so that QuickTime Player plays the video, I can insert it into iMovie '11 and edit, and also insert it into Final Cut Pro X and edit video.

The camera used to film the class was a Panasonic AG-HMC40P, owned by a local cable TV station; they use Kodak video encoding software, and a SD card was used to store the video. The file extension is .mts, and the mime file is MPEG 2 transport. He said I probably need an AVCHD converter, and the Mac app store lists 8 of those options, 4 free and 4 for up to $9.99. He said I'll also need a converter for later plans of posting on YouTube or on the website, and while some of those in the app store might work for the later needs, he knows one app called "Compressor" that would work for the uploading later. He also suggested I could try renaming the .mts file to .MP2T, but he wasn't sure that would work.
They don't work with Macs at the studio, but I had thought I could have some lessons there in editing, and apply what I learned to my iMac and iMovie.
First, though, I have to be able to see it and review it!

Why does disc show as filled with only one small file added?

I'm also new to Apple. I've a MacBook Pro - Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I've checked the documentation and help information and followed the instructios. The blank CD-R shows as (CD-R; BLANK - Yes; ERASEABLE - Yes; OVERWRITABLE - Yes; APPENDABLE- yes). I wrote one small file to the CD using the Burn Folder. The file was on the CD, but all available space was used with zero remaining. The disc is not erasable. One response to an earlier question to look for multisesson recorder and select leave disc appendable or look for a triangle in top right. Could not find this. I'm sure this is another area where I'm just looking in the wrong place for instruction. Any help is appreciated.

If you need to carry large files (e.g., larger than about 4GB) back and forth, you may need ExFAT. Otherwise MS-DOS works for smaller files.
The Mac can Read, but not write Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) without an add-on program such as Paragon NTFS.
