Analog desktop clock option disappeared in Leopard

The option to have a semi-transparent floating desktop clock seems to have disappeared in Leopard... Clicking on the purple ? in the Date/Time Preferences states: "To see a clock in the menu bar or on the desktop, select Show the date and time. Choose options for how the date and time are displayed. Your changes take effect immediately so you can see the results." No such option exists.

Alas, a shortcoming found with the two freebies!
After a short trial I have discovered that neither clock works across Spaces. As an old X-Windows user (emphasis on the "old") I am reluctant to give up the Space feature. What to do, what to do? Forego the use of spaces and go back to a cluttered screen or live with a digital clock in the menu bar.
I think I'll bring in an actual, physical clock and put it on my desk. KISS seems to the the appropriate approach for this problem.

  • Desktop Clock for Snow Leopard

This may not be the correct place for this but I couldn't think of where else to put it.
My menu is really full thanks to Menu Meters, Xmenu, Mainmenu etc. and I need the room so I'd like to remove the time and date but I can't find a nice looking desktop clock. Soooo... anyone know of one?
I do have SimpleClock but it looks too simple. I'd like something with a little more class.
    Any suggestions?

    Hmm,
I was not familiar with EarthDesk but now that I know about it - I conjecture that application runs in the background, right?
If it does run in the background - then that is the real base of the problem installing Snow Leopard. Others with (other) apps running in the background have experienced repeated run-then-eject-installer problems. One person reported that CarbonCopyCloner's scheduling app caused this specific problem.
Now, I understand that the desktop problem isn't the same as having the installer begin to run, then stop and eject the installer disk. My point is only that apps running in the background are apparently causing (now various) problems with the SL installer.
Glad to see that one more problem has been solved.

  • Bring back the desktop clock

I have just purchased a new Mac mini with OS 10.5.6. I migrated all my files and settings with no problem from my older Mac but there is no desktop clock! The Time and Date System Preferences does not provide that option. I always thought Apple made improvements as they went from one version to the next but this is a step backwards. Why leave the desktop clock out of Leopard? Please bring it back. Looking forward to seeing it in the next release.
Meanwhile does anyone have something similar? Thanks, Gerry

How do you know it will remain a component in Dashboard? Do you have a crystal ball?
Unless you really do have a crystal ball, I would say that giving feedback _has a chance_ to work. It may not be something I'd hold my breath simply because of the number of people desiring a feature may not reach a critical mass for awhile, but every person who desires a feature should ask for it. That's the only way some features sometimes do get a return. We've had features return to the operating system after a long time before, while other features have been relegated to third parties to create. Apple has adopted many third party features, at the complaints of third party software developers, and in return has allowed third parties to build features missing in Mac OS X that existed before. So I wouldn't necessary give up hope. Make that feedback, it may be the critical point that allows a feature to return.

  • On Finder Freeze/Relaunch All my desktop files & icons disappear

    The title sums it up.
When ever my mac decides to go into spinning wheel mode and I have to force quit/relaunch finder, when I relaunch finder every desktop file & icon disappear.
At that point I'm forced to push the shutdown button on the tower and reboot, then all is well until the next time.
And the next time could be a day or a few days or a week. No rhyme or reason why.
Please help me solve this frustrating problem.
    Thanks

Cloud backup plans can slow your Mac down, and if used simultaneously with your Mac's networking, or you have an unreliable internet connection, could be the cause of your freezes.  You may be better off seeing if turning off iCloud temporarily helps.   This can especially be a problem with non-Apple routers whose firmware may not be up to date.   Multitasking with backups can lead to corruption of your backups.  Time Machine should only backup to hard drives twice the capacity of the original, otherwise it spends a lot of time trying to discover which archives to eraes to maintain room.  Here are some other options:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Energy Saver can also create problems for backups, as it takes a moment for the Mac to recognize the connection.  Use screen saver instead of Energy Saver when backing up.  System Preferences lets you control both.   Putting hard drives to sleep when backing up is ill advised.

  • Desktop Clock Issue while in Magnetic Dock

Having an issue with my Z3 Compact where the Desktop Clock will not display when the phone is in the magneticcharging dock. I have set up SmartConnect so that when the phone is placed in the charging dock the Alarm and Clock app is supposed to start, however, the screen simply turns off and the phone charges. With my Z2 I was able to use the phone as my beside alarm clock where the clock would display all night while charging using the same SmartConnect set up mentioned above. Any way to get this to work for the Z3?

Hi DH82, welcome to the community! In the SmartConnect app, did you tap edit event and select a specific time period? Make sure you have the time period set correctly. Also, check under Settings > Display > Daydream and see whether or not that is selected, if it is turn Daydream off and see whether the clock then appears when charging. Also check under Settings > Sound & Notification > interruptions > Make sure Events & Reminders is turned on. Keep us updated. I followed the above steps. I turned on the Events and Reminders in the Interruptions section. I ensured Daydream was turned off. I then went to SmartConnect and created a new Event for the Charging Dock where when the phone is placed in the Dock the Alarm and Clock app is supposed to start. I ensured there was no specific time period.  When I placed the phone in the dock, my lock screen appeared for about 10 seconds and then the screen shut off. No Digital Clock appeared. When I removed my phone from the Dock and unlocked it, the Analog clock from the Alarm and Clock app was the first thing displayed.  I am really disappointed that this feature has been removed/amended and can't find a reasonable explanation as to why. As stated earlier, the only reason I purchased the Magnetic Dock was to be able to use my phone as a Digital Clock while it was charging. I also believe that this was one of the features used in the description of the dock.  Is there anything else I should be trying?

The icon in the dock is NOT the file itself.  You simply removed the dock icon.  Go into your Applications folder and you'll find "Install Mac OSX..." and you have what you want.

Sorry but this is not clear.
    When you would "import" what?
two files would show up in "images".
Do you mean in the All Images search in the Finder?
    IF so:
1.Never interact with photos that are in iPhoto via the All Images Search. This does not understand the iPhoto Library and it's very, very easy to damage the library this way.
    2. What you were seeing was the original file you imported and the thumbnail created by iPhoto for viewing on the iPhoto Window. That thumbnail is not designed for user access.
What are you trying to do ultimately?

  • Not getting ADF Desktop Integration option in Jdeveloper 11.1.1.3

    Hi,
I am following this link:- http://www.oracle.com/webfolder/technetwork/tutorials/obe/jdev/obe11jdev/ps3/tutorial_adfdi/adfdinewtutorial/jdtut_11r1_59_2.html for ADF Desktop Integration.
When I am opening my Jdeveloper after installing *.NET Programability Support* from Control Panel. The Option in Tools Menu of J Developer i.e ADF Desktop Integration is not coming.
But When I checked in my machine :- C:\Oracle\Middleware\jdeveloper\adfdi\bin\excel\client. I am able to find set up of ADF Desktop Integration. I ran it and it got installed as per the above link. But still I am not able to see that option in my Tools. When I right click on View_Controller of ADFdi_BC Application as per the Link and went to NEW but I checked in ALL Technology of Client Tier option, ADF Desktop Integration option is not coming.
Can anyone suggest me what to do for getting that option in my Jdeveloper and I can use this to make my Excel sheet under View Controller.
    Please suggest me something.
    Thanks,
    Ramit Mathur

The title of your post mentions version 11.1.1.3. The tutorial link mentions version 11.1.1.4. It is probably best to get the matching version. In fact, I recommend getting the most recent version, 11.1.2.x.

Also, my battery died after like 4 hours of a full charge.
This is a brand new phone .. HELLPP!!!

Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes back again. This usually takes care of glitches. You will not lose data resetting the phone that way.
As for the battery drain, if you're using push/fetch for your mail, try to delete and set up the mail account again, the have been cases, in which the mail app tried to log into the mail server over and over again, causing the battery drain.

  • IMovie: Green screen option disappears?

Hi I recently started using the green screen sollution iMoive provides, and it works alright.
BUT! after putting at bg image and a green screen image together something weird happens, if I decide to put extra bg material after the sequence or erase everything and start over in the same project, the green screen option disappears. together with the insert picture in picture aso. why does it do that.? anyone else has that problem?

    Hi
And Advanced tools still ON - or did it go to OFF also ?
I would try - Create a new User-Account and log into this and see if iMovie behaves. This forces Your Mac to create ALL pref. files as New - and if all works OK now then this indicates where to find the problem.

  • "Other" login option disappears/reappears.  Need help preventing this!

I administer a Mac lab with 20 old 10.4.11 Macs.  There are a variety of login options available on startup, most for specific grades in our school.  One catchall login option is "Other".  Once "Other" is selected, students have to enter their network login ID/password.  This specific login process lets the 5th graders access their legacy (OS 9) keyboarding program.  They save their work to their network folders (OS 10.5.8 server).  Normally this works fine, but on several of the IDENTICALLY CONFIGURED Macs, the "Other" initial login option "disappears"/reappears.
This is a significant problem for the keyboarding class, so anyone who can tell me how to fix this problem will be rewarded in Heaven.  Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Thanks for the reply.  The deal is that I AM the Network Manager.....  and my Mac background is limited.
There are enough similarities between Active Directory (what I'm used to) and Open Directory that I can function in our computing environment without problems (usually).
This situation is just plain odd due to its sporadic nature,  This problem will eventually go away when we replace the 10.4.11 Mac workstations and the really old Classic keyboarding program.  Until then, I will check DNS.  Thanks.
While I'm here, do you have any idea why I can't map a network drive from our Windows 7 PC laptops to our Mac OS 10.5.8 server?  The Mac workstations connect to the server with no problem.  We have one subnet so being on different subnets is not an issue.
