Analog multichannel shielded cable

We need to connect a multichannel sensor to our intermediate board (before NI xseries digitizer). The intermediate board will be custom designed, it can have virtually any connector.
Sensor has 32 channel connector (mating is MS3116F20-41S). We could not find a good cable for it (see signal description below), so we need to make a custom connection.
Our idea is to take a good cable, cut it and solder a connector for the sensor on free end.
Signal from the sensor: 0.5 us, pulses 30uV - 5 mV amplitude with ~1 V bias offset, up to 10 kHz rate.
Sensor is a ~100 Ohm resistance, so current is 10 mA average on each channel.
Signal is AC coupled, amplified, integrated on our board, so pulse shape change is not important. Distance is up to 1 m (3 feet). We can not place ac coupling and amplifier closer to the sensor.
Pulses on all channels happen at the same moment, cable should not allow cross-talk at least up to 1/1000.
Surrounding environment is pretty noisy.
The questions are: what type of shielding is recommended, should each channel be individually shielded?
What cable would you recommend?

Sounds like a challenging measurement problem!
I would probably use a multi-pair twisted cable with each pair individually shielded. Something like Alpha Wire 6019C. Since your cable is short and the currents are small, you could probably use a cable with smaller wires than that example. Apparently the sensor outputs share a common or ground since the connector does not have enough contacts for a pair of conductors per channel. I would probably ground one wire of each pair at both ends and ground the shields only at one end. If ground loops are a possibility, build some isolation into the intermediate board.
At the intermediate board I might use a DB-50 connector with a metal shell. Ground as many of the pins as you can and connect the shell to the shields. Put good mechanical supports on the connector on the board and use jack screws to hold the cable to the board.

Converting analog 5.1 (multiple cables) to Digital DI

So far I?ve been using my Inspire 5. Digital 5700 speaker system together with my Audigy Platinum in my Desktop PC to watch DVDs and play games with a 5. experience. To connect soundcard and Speaker system, I used the provided Digital DIN cable, and it worked fantastically, for both, DVDs and games.
Now I bought a notebook and the only choice to improve onboard sound was the X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook. I thought that I could simply connect it to my Inspire 5700 by connecting optical out with optical in using a TosLink-Mini ? Toslink cable. While this may work for DVDs (I don?t have the cable yet), it won?t work for all other applications, because ? as I read ? optical connections only provide a stereo signal unless the signal it'ss encoded via AC3 or DTS.
Of course there is the docking module which provides multichannel analog out. Trouble here: the Inspire 5700 only comes with two analog line in channels, front and rear. So that would lead to 4.0 instead of 5.. Missing the center speaker for games is very bad.
Therefore I am looking for a way to convert the analog signal coming from the docking module into something that can be decoded as a 5. signal by the Inspire 5700. I have already found the DTS-60 which would turn the analog signal into a DTS signal. But that costs more than the soundcard itself.
So, my question: Is there any simpler / cheaper way how to transform multicable analog 5. to one-cable digital 5., either AC3, DTS or Digital DIN? I?d prefer a simple converter to Digital DIN, because that?s what the Inspire 5700 was mainly designed for ? and it worked perfectly with my old Audigy.
Alternati'vely, one could possibly also use some fancy software to convert all the wave-out sound into AC3 or DTS and send it along the optical cable. But I don?t know any such software plus I expect this to drain a lot of processor power.
Any help is greatly appreciated ? it'ss kind of frustrating that two products of the same company can't be connected with each other, just because neither, the card nor the docking module provide Digital DIN.

I finally got the Toslink -> Toslink-Mini cable which I need for optical out. Well, as you said, there is only stereo, so that's no big news. I was quite surprised to see, however, that the Xtreme Audio Notebook card cannot even pass an AC3 signal from a DVD to the receiver. It can provide stereo for DVDs, but once I choose S/PDIF out (in WinDVD), there is no sound at all. If, however, I simply pull out this useless card and plug the cable directly into the the S/PDIF of my notebook, I get wonderful DVD sound in Dolby Digital. So, what the heck is wrong now? It says "Dolby Digital" and DTS on the box, so I guess it should work. Why does it work with onboard audio but not with the external card? It's really kind of disappointing, since I bought the card to have surround in games and to be able to watch DVDs in Dolby Digital. The card can do neither of it, unless I'm doing something wrong.
Any hints are welcome, and thank you for your explanations so far!

Pxi-4071 shielding cable

Hi, we use pxi-4071 on pxi-1033 for measurments and we connected shielded cables few meters long. We wrapped foil cables from the kit. After that we connected all the shields to the ground from the power supply. But we still remain interferences about 1nA and DC component 5nA. If anyone faced a similar problem, is it possible that we are too often measured current. Can you advise the shilded cables for multimeter in this case.

Why would you suspect the software when all the evidence points to an issue with the HARDWARE? And if you're measuring in the nanoAmp region, you'd better be ABSOLUTLEY certain that your grounds are true and accurate. Probably grounding to your power supply is not good enough. Your power supply probably has to be grounded to a copper stake going - what is, it, six feet? - into the ground.

That's exactly what I'm looking for, but I couldn't find such a converter on the creative homepage.

I believe the DIN for soundcard are mainly built and solely used by Creative. I don't think there is any 3rd-party converter in the market to do DIN. There is a software here posted by some other users that can do AC3 encoding on the fly. Not too sure where's the post now but you can do a search for it.

Crosstalk problem with shielded cable on 6509.

I've got an interesting problem with my 6509 test setup. I have the 6509, an SH100100-Flex cable, and the SCB100 shielded connector block. The problem occurs when I configure one line for output and, on a separate port, configure other lines (adjacent to the output line) for input.
Without the cable connected, when I look at the logic on the input lines, they do not mirror the output. With just the cable connected (i.e. no connector block) the input lines seem to be mirroring (that is, have lots of crosstalk) with the output line. However, when I measure the impedance on the pins it is overload. Finally, of course, with the connector block, I have the exact same issue. Does anyone understand what is happening? How do
I prevent this crosstalk? Do you think the cable is not working correctly?

Hi 6509User,
Since the input impedance of the 6509 is high, and you don't have any other device driving those inputs, then those lines are essentially floating. In this configuration, those lines a very susceptible to crosstalk. Adding the cable allows the inputs to become AC coupled with the adjacent ouptput lines.
Go ahead and connect an output from your device to the 6509's input lines. Once the lines are being driven either high or low, I suspect that the majority of the crosstalk will go away.

Can DVB-T Integrated tv tuners receive analog signal froma cable?

Hello , i have an HP Pavilion DV-7 1020el with an integrated DVB-T tuner , so my question is can it receive analog signals from cable or only digital. I live in a region where digital broadcast isn't available , only analog ( Romania)
When i try to scan for channels i dont pick up anny channels at all . I have been to Italy and there i could pick up channels , but there they have digital DVB-T signal , so am i doing something wrong or my tuner just cant receive analog signal from regular cable tv.

Base station causing interference with cable modem

I have a late model apple airport extreme base station with time machine. The unit is placed next to the cable box (that provides phone service) that connects to the modem that connects to the base station. When the base station is turned on and working (we use wifi ) there is a nuisance noise in the phones when making and receiving a call for the first 20 to 30 seconds and then disappears. When the base station is disconnected there are no problems with the phones.
Is there such a thing as shielding for the cable box and/or modem? Or is there a simpler solution?

I use a VOIP phone system provided by the cable company (no phone filters required). The VOIP connects to an analog phone management system called Talkswitch. So I have three VOIP lines connecting to the Talkswitch box and 7 lines leaving the Talkswitch box connecting to analogue phones (wired) throughout the office. So to recap:
Cable company line connects to a VOIP Box (ARIS TM604G).
A modem (Thompson DCM475) connects to the the VOIP Box and to the Apple Extreme Base station (with Time Machine).
Three phone lines connect the VOIP Box directly to the Talkswitch Box. The Talkswitch Box is NOT connected to the Apple Base Station.
The server (Mac Mini) is wired to the Apple Base Station.
When I make or receive a call there is a buzzing sound in the line. Sound disappears after 20 to 30 seconds.
When I turn the Base Station off (disconnect) the buzzing sound disappears.
When I leave the Base Station ON and I connect a phone directly to the VOIP Box, there is no buzzing.
I can only assume that the Base Station is interfering with something. Is it the Talkswitch box or the phone cables?
Should I move the Base Station further from the Talkswitch box? or Use shielded cables (which ones)? Or is there another solution? Or is it a voltage problem?

High Noise on Analog Output PCI 6289

Hi guys
I am using a PCI 6289 M series device for A/D characterization , I am using the device both for the analog output generation and also for data acquistion of the digital lines , The dynamic tests for the A/D were showing a very poor SNR ratio of the ADC, it is a 12 bit adc so technically in the ideal case i should atleast see 90 db but the resulting figure was way lower around 40 db .
I connected the A0 from the PCI 6289 brought out to a scb-68 block to a RHODE and SCHWARZ spectrum analyzer , the above spectrum analyzer is a decent one with good analysis capability and I was surprised to see a SNR of 50 db , the data sheet says that PCI 628X devices have a internal 16 bit DAC so technically the SNR should be atleast 90 db even if 6 db were removed for the harsh environment of the computer .
please advise , have anybody else faced this problem , the data sheet does not give a figure for the SNR ratio of the card , since i need to test a 12 bit adc , thought that 6289 would be up to the task since it has a 16 bit DAC.I am using the Noise shielding cables and also SCB-68 block , the block is far removed from other power supplies .
any ideas why the noise is occuring , one of my colleagues says maybe the harsh environment inside the pc enclosure causes it , is it necessary to use a separate PCI box for the card and then connect the card to the computer , is this standard procedure ?????.
and also does the PCI -6289 have a filtering option for the analog output , all i could find was the filtering for input.

Thanks a lot for responding to the thread , did not expect a response in the holiday season . The SNR for the 12 bit one was a typo , was referring to the 16 bit onboard dac in the M series card , which technically should ensure a clean input signal having atleast 90 db .
The info you have given helps a lot , i suspect the conditions inside the pc might be causing it , also i am driving the analog output from the card at almost its limits of 2.5 MS/s , the sample rate specification for the card on the data sheet says 2.8 MS/s , also i notice the settling time requirement for the outputs is 3 us which i suspect will put the onboard DAC under quite a load.
If the conditions inside the PC cannot be rectified , where can i find a external PCI box which can be connected to the computer or does such a box exist only for the PXI cards ? will that necessarily rectify the problem and also since filtering is not possible on the card itself , I remember reading the scb -68 connector block has single RC output filter option , i would have to use discrete R,C components to make it but notice on the right hand corner some pcb holes are provided , would this help.

Cables/Accessorries for DIO-96 & 4350

I have the PC-DIO-96 card and the NI4350 (PCI Version).
I need to determine the appropriate cables and accessories for my application:
1. PC-DIO-96
* Gives and Receives Discrete Signals.
* Need 3m Cable length. (Shielded or Unshielded)
- 1 End will be connected to the PC-DIO-96.
- Other End shall be mounted to a box where the
wires carrying the signals shall interface with
the connector.
2. NI4350 (PCI)
* Receives Analog Signals for ADC.
* Need 3m cable length. (Shielded or Unshielded)
- 1 End will be connected to the NI4350.
- Other End shall be mounted to a box where the
wires carrying the signals shall interface with
the connector.
What do I need?
MY GUESS:
========
1. FOR PC-DIO-96:
* QTY. 2 of CB-50 I/O Connector Block (to mount to box)
* R1005050 (but this only comes in 1m and 2m, how to get more length?)
2. FOR NI4350 (PCI):
* SH6868 Shielded Cable (5m version)
* TBX-68 termination block (to accept signals and mount to box).

For the 4350 you're OK.
There is no longer cable for digital than 2m.
You can also use a single 100-100 cable and go to an SCB-100(this is a shielded box).
The only other way I can thinkof to get longer cable is this:
Use a SH100100 cable from the DIO96 and the R1005050. See if you can order a 100-pin FEMALE cable end and backshell from www.amp.com(Tyco electronics); the sh100100 cable has male connectors on both ends. Then, you can change the male ended connector on either cable with the Female connector you order from AMP.

Can I Escape my Cable Company with Internet TV?

I just checked my cable bill today after our free trial of a DVR box from our cable company, and while the service has been excellent (they also have my phone and internet), at $67 a month plus tax and service fees for TV alone, I could buy a whole bunch of equipment and still save some $$. My son doesn't have cable tv but watches hulu for most shows.
I was wondering what the possibilities are, what equipment I'd need, and what are the potential pitfalls of going internet tv and getting the signal to 1 HiDef TV and 2 CRT type tvs (no digital receivers on those).
The latest issue of MacWorld says that the Apple TV interface isn't quite all it is cracked up to be and there are elegato tv thingies on sale at OWC, but I have to confess, although I've used Macs since 1984, I have never bothered to investigate the technology for TV so it is Greek to me. I was not enthused about the idea of using my business computer for storing, even temporarily, huge video files on the HD....
I believe my HiDef TV will receive digital signals from Pittsburgh stations, because before I installed cable, I picked up OTA stations, but that was before the switch, so I don't know for a fact whether that was digital or regular broadcast... That was 2 years ago...
I guess what I'm not sure about mostly is creating a the multi floor setup for my particular situation. My cable company provides me with one cable modem in the basement. The rest of the coax cables are set to stream the HD and Analog signals to the other jacks in the house. (my older TVs -one in the basement and one on the second floor-are SD and pre digital. They can see the Analog signals, but the cable company sells boxes to allow the tv's to get digital and hd signals IF I wanted to pay for them.)
My Setup: I have my computer, router and cable modem box in the basement and one analog tv in another room in the basement, the HD TV is on the 1st floor and I have one analog tv on the second floor (2 floors away from my computer).
I assume that the Apple TV is wireless and perhaps can get a signal from the basement through the floor, but how would I wire up the 2 analogs, even if they would work with the Apple TV... I assume both the Apple TV and the Elegato system works through an internet attachment through a computer, or does the Elegato pull signal from the cable company and make is usable on conputer (but not a TV)...?
Would you, could you, run the signals from the computer back up the coax somehow and feed it to the other TVs?
Right now, with phone, internet, and tv on the same coax system, I can't lose one to save money on the other

Yes. The El Gato devices are for getting content from an antenna or cable connection into the computer. If you want to bring OTA television broadcasts into your computer, a device like those made by El Gato might be of interest to you.
The Apple TV cannot (without hacking) access content other than from the iTunes Store, so it would not be useful for getting shows from other sources such as Hulu. You'd therefore need to figure out how to connect your computer(s) to your various TVs. Working out all the various distribution issues involved in HDMI and analog would probably be better taken up on an AV-related from such as the AV Science Forum.
As to the "pitfalls" of dropping your cable service, the largest pitfall is that though a number of TV shows have been made available on the Internet, by no means have all, or even a significant percentage, of the available shows been made available for streaming or download. So before you drop your cable service, you'll want to investigate whether or not the shows you care about are available somewhere on the Internet, at a price that you deem reasonable (some are made available for free by including commercials but some you have to pay per episode).
Another thing to consider; you may find that you're getting a "package" deal if you, as you indicate, have TV, Internet and phone all from the cable company and that if you drop one service, the price on the others will go up. This may make dropping TV service less attractive, so be sure to check that out.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2369 shows only one kind of mini-DVI port for the 12" Powerbook. Sounds like you got something that is not an mini-DVI port based cable. Mini-VGA cables look very similar, and can be misidentified. What are you connecting to from the Powerbook G4? Make, model # is important. Often DVI-HDMI adapters are better than DVI to VGA if there is an option. Cause DVI-VGA you need a proper digital/analog converter in the cable in question.

It can be done with analog but not digital thanks to "good 'ol" HDCP copy protection which apple (and most other manufacturers) unfortunately respect.
So you can take the analog output from your cable box (component -- 5 cables -- if it has it but generally they all have composite -- 3 cables) and feed it into some kind of converter or into some appropriate pci card for your mac pro. But none of them are going to let you directly use the HDMI output from the box to your computer.
Bottom line, no single cord is going to work and it will never be the higher quality digital picture you get on your tv.
Some qualification: There are boxes that I think support hdmi input. Look at Blackmagic. But I still don't think you can get around the HDCP from the cable box (might depend on the kind of cable box).

Connecting externl display to iMac - Cable Suggestions?

I just picked up an old HP LP1965 with dual DVI inputs. I have checked it using a VGA->DVI adapter into the monitor and the Apple Mini-DV->VGA into the iMac. This seems silly to me to convert from digital out of the Mac to analog and then back to digital into the monitor. Therefore, before I buy a VGA / DVI cable to remove one of the adapters, is there suggestion for a Mini-DV / DVI cable? If there is no Mini-DV to DVI, then should I just buy the Mini-DV to DVI converter and a DVI cable so it does not need to go to analog?

I use it on my G5 iMac without problems. Not that this will split your video ram between the 2 monitors.
The iMac only has a VGA out. The only way I know to use a DVI monitor is to purchase a converter (check out Dr. Bott) - they are expensive, and I have no idea what the quality of the image would be.

Ethernet cable used to connect BT Infinity router ...

Either a Cat5e or Cat6 would do. Cat6 is the newer standard and can carry faster connections. You require a straight through or patch cable not a crossover. The shielding on normal cables is usually sufficient unless you are laying the cable along side electrical cable or appliances.

VGA cable question, and a problem

My PowerBook is connected to my 17" LCD via the cable that was included with the monitor. I bought a replacement VGA cable the other day. (I needed the original VGA cable to connect my Mac mini to the TV.) The original cable works perfectly with both the LCD and the TV. With the new cable there's visible ghosting appearing when connected to both the LCD and to the TV. What the ****? It's a brand new cable. It's a "Replacement/Switchbox Cable VGA/SVGA High Desnsity DB15 Male/Male" cable. Is that what I need? I noticed that the original cable has 15 pins and the new cable only has 14. Is that the problem? I didn't see any 15 pin cables at CompUSA.
Do I have a bad cable? To I need to return it in exchange for something else? What gives?

Welcome to the discussions Michael,
It sounds like a poor quality cable - either an individual dud or just a bad brand. I wouldn't worry about the missing pin - VGA cables have three pins that aren't used for anything, so manufactures often leave one or more of them out.
Take it back and look for a good quality shielded cable. Ask the the staff if necessary. It may cost you more than you spent on the one you currently have. Try looking for a Belkin cable - they're usually a good brand (assuming your current cable isn't made by them...)
