Analog surround sound on Mac -what does work?

okay, I'm sure this has been covered before, if so- i haven't really heard of it. Are there any options for analog surround sound on the Mac currently , that is, surround sound using the 3 stereo plugs, and not the optical/coaxial digital plug? the latter requires a speaker set with digital input, and I'm not quite ready to sell the speakers I have just for that, not yet
Oh, and affordable would be great too. Maybe I can find something, but I'm not going to pay $500 just for the firewire box, so I can hook up these speakers to my Mac
anyways, any replies/advice welcomed
thanks

thanks Mr. Brody, but the firewave isn't being updated and it isn't being sold
thanks anyways

  • Maybe a possible solution to Mac analog surround sound?

wow-big title font. As I'm sure some of you know, we Mac users used to have a few options for analog surround sound. Sadly, those options are gone. However, I've tried something which sort of works okay-not a lot of options, and it's kinda kludgy, but it works. I don't work for the guy, so don't consider this an endorsement. Dr. Lex at www.dr-lex.be has written a CM2602 enabler for Mac OS X. What's that? you might ask, well, the CM2602 is the audio chip used in a couple of outboard USB sound cards for PC, and this little bit of software enables analog/coaxial output and lets the darn thing work with your mac. I'm using a Zalman ZM-RSSC
outboard USB box. Paid about $55 for it, but it does work. All you have to do is find out if there's the right chip in there, grab the software, follow his instructions, and it should work. However....I've found that messing around with the speaker settings doesn't work that well. Just set it to Use encoded Digital Audio and you will get sound. the only other solutions I know of are having a set of speakers with digital audio input ($$$) or some fancy Firewire boxes ($$) so this may be helpful to you
    Good luck

sorry folks, I spoke too soon-I shut down my Mac pro, and then started it up today, and...nothing....the usb device is gone...I guess it doesn't stay, I'm guessing I have to reboot my Mac Pro, then plug in the usb device, then mess around with Audio Midi setup...again...
again, I'm sorry-I thought it was a permanent solution,  but now I'm kinda embarrassed
I'll have to wait until I get an email from Dr. Lex and see what he says. Of course, it may be that 10.6.8 might have fudged things up-that's been known to happen, alas. My FireWave used to work fine with Tiger and Leopard, then after that....

  • Surround Sound on Mac mini 11

I am trying to set up an Trust Soundforce 5.1 surround sound. The problem is that it requires 3x 3.5mm jacks to connect to the Mac mini is there any adapter that I can purchase to solve this problem?

Should work with a > Amazon.com: Logitech 5.1 Game Console Adapter Convert Rca Plugs To A Single 1/8: Video Games and a RCA to mini stereo Y cable, but it will probably only produce 2ch sound.

  • My laptop sound is coming out as an echo the sound isnt normal what does that mean?

what does it mean if the sound on my laptop is coming out like a echo

    Hi
You have a couple of options as I see it.
Go to device manager and uninstall the Sound driver and restart and unit will install the driver automatically.
Try doing System restore to the date when the unit was working fine.
Try to update the driver from hp.com website for Audio & Bios.
Let us know how it goes!

  • New apps indicated in iTunes on mac - what does this mean?

I am using iTunes 10.7 on a Mac running 10.8.2 Mountain Lion and sync with my iPad 3 running iOS 6.0.1.
I have 770 apps of which about 500 are ON THE iPAD and another 270 are in the purchased but not on iPad section on the cloud I guess.
    All apps are up-to-date.
BUT when I go to to iTunes on my Mac, when I look in the sidebar I see next to Apps a gray oval with the number 107 in it.  Now I have a similar gray oval (there is a special name for this "gray oval"…) for other things, like Podcasts or TV Shows.  I know the number in those gray ovals means "Unwatched" and it is correct-- any Podcasts which I have downloaded or TV Shows which I have that I HAVE NOT WATCHED are so indicated.
BUT what does the number mean for APPS??  Someone told me it may mean "APPS THAT NEED UPDATES" - but ALL my Apps on my iPad 3are up-to-date and this syncs regularly with my iPad---
So what in the world is this number 107 indicating and how to get rid of it or what action to take to respond to it?
    Thanks for any comments.

    Saturday 8 December 2012

Thanks for the feedback! From your reply I think I may understand this better: I have downloaded 700+ apps and deleted over 200 of them.  I show 116 in my iTunes that "have an update available" - but I believe these are all apps that I deleted, so they have NOT been updated on my iPad as they are no longer on the iPad.  (But iTunes keeps essentially all versions on my Mac it seems).
OK why not just hit "update" for the 116 apps?  Because I have 2 that I downgraded intentionally - and don't want to take the chance that ZITE 1.3.3 or Bloomberg version 1.x are replaced by the (in my opinion) poor upgrades.
I will try to reinstall a few of the "deleted" apps, then see if they have upgrades.  If so I will do that and then see if this syncs to iTunes and thereby reduces the number of upgrades-- well indeed I'll look for the specific apps I have re-installed and upgraded!  Then I'll report back here.
    Thanks again,
    Steve--

  • Can I get 5.1 Surround Sound from Mac to Apple TV?

    Hi,
I have an iPad, iPhone and an Apple TV, and I love airplay, such a great feature!
I'm thinking of replacing my desktop for a mac and I was wondering; if I had a 5.1 surround encoded video file on my mac, would I be able to push the whole screen to Apple TV through mirroring and still get the 5.1 sound output to my audio receiver and speaker setup?
I'm NOT asking if I can airplay an mp4 encoded movie through iTunes at 5.1; I know I can already do that on my desktop and it works fine.
What I'm looking for is the ability to simply mirror what's playing on the mac to my hdtv through Apple TV, while still retaining the full 5.1 surround mix and outputting it to my audio receiver (i.e. Without having to convert the file type and drag it or play it in iTunes).
So before I take the plunge and spend over a grand on a mac, is this possible?
If this isn't possible I will probably just get a Mac mini and plug it directly into my receiver via hdmi. I can't see any problems doing it that way (I hope!)
Any info here would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Thanks for your assistance, but I spent quite some time researching this before posting, and the post you link to (which I've already read) doesn't actually answer my question, that person is asking about his wireless speakers receiving individual sound channels through airplay. Other discussions, which I've also looked at, seem inconclusive.
I was really posting in the hopes of finding anyone who had personal experience of trying to play a fullscreen, 5.1 surround video file using airplay mirroring from their mac to their Apple TV, and if they received 5.1 sound.
Thanks again for your help though.

  • Cannot select 5.1 surround sound option? What am I missing?

My iMac is connected to my digial 5.1 speaker system with a toslink digital audio cable. However, when I go to Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup, I click "Configure Speakers", then "Multichannel", the only option I am allowed to select is "Stereo" ... the "5.1 Surround" option is greyed out. What am I missing here?

The next step would be some basic troubleshooting.
Reset the PRAM. Shut down your computer, then turn on the computer and immediately press and hold Command (Apple)-Option-P-R until you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Then Repair Permissions. In Apps/Utilities/Disk Utility, select the startup disk in the list on the left. Click First Aid. Click Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. Do this until no more repairs are reported. (You should always Repair Permissions after installing OS X, Security and Apple app updates/upgrades, as a precaution.)

  • Cannot get photo stream to work on MAC, it does work on iPhone and pad.  All are turned on and settings correct

I have a new MAC desktop 10.9 OSX Since I purchased I have not get photo stream to work, it is correctly on i believe.  I have the latest iphone, and an older i pad and they are streaming my pics, Help?

    Hello, 9914.
Thank you for the question.  If the Apple ID used for your iOS devices matches what is being used on the computer, try disabling Photo Stream and enabling it again.  Next, try the steps in the article below.
I don't see any photos in the My Photo Stream view of iPhoto or Aperture.
Make sure your Mac has an active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. If you can't connect to the Internet, updates to My Photo Stream will not appear in iPhoto or Aperture. If necessary, review the instructions for troubleshooting your Internet connection on your Mac.
From your Mac, choose System Preferences > iCloud. Make sure that the Photo Stream checkbox is selected and you're signed in to the same iCloud account that you're using on your other supported devices.
Open iPhoto or Aperture, then choose Preferences > iCloud (or Photo Stream).
If you're using iPhoto 9.4 or later, or Aperture 3.4 or later, make sure that the My Photo Stream checkbox is selected. If you'd like all new photos that you've uploaded to your iPhoto or Aperture library to be uploaded to My Photo Stream, make sure that the Automatic Upload checkbox is selected as well.
If you're using iPhoto 9.2.2 through 9.3.2, or Aperture 3.2.3 through 3.3.2, make sure that the Enable Photo Stream and Automatic Import checkboxes are selected.

  • What does work right in Captivate?

I'm getting fatigued by all the issues I've discovered in Captivate and Adobe's total lack of support for these issues.
All they ever want you to do is upgrade for a price.
If anyone can shed some light on the following issues within the next 4 days, I'll be happy and continue my track, creating my courses in Captivate.
After this period, I'm reverting back to my pervious IDE.
My issues are ALL surrounding SCORM2004 publishing and compliance in Captivate eLearning suite 2 (and "No" I'm not updating, spending more money on this suite of disfunctional tools is not being considered).
    List of issues:
    1. Multi-SCO menu does not correctly display progress in each project.
    2. When publishing as SCORM, I am unable to use the #_fs.htm file - captivate is not able to use it.
    3. After upgrading to CP 5.0.2, Closed Captions have gone back to the broken state (displaying only in bottom left corner) after I corrected it in CP 5.0.
    4. When resizing a project smaller (using equal resize percentages and ensuring Captions and objects get resized) the project and captions resize, but images and image buttons only resize vertically (i.e. they get squeezed vertically but remain the same width).
    5. When displaying a project as full screen, you cannot use SCORM support.
    6. When using SCORM support, bookmarking does not function.
Scenario: (the first project of my 5 initial projects)
I publish a Multi SCO project consisting of 14 CP5 projects. Each project has buttons that, when clicked, "continue" to the next slide. The TOC reflects completion of each slide in every module.
At the end of each project, the final button jumps to the next project via "File or URL", pointing to the htm start page of that next project.
My projects all contain both slide and object audio, so I'm not going back to CP5.0 due to the loading issue CP5.0.2 corrects.
Using the Multi-SCO-Publisher-2, the LMS menu checks some but not all modules (even though all pages have been completed in each), as well, I may be in module 13 (example) and get bounced back to module 2 (which coincidently has no check beside it).
Question: Why would module 2 not get a check in the Multi SCO menu when I continue on every page and get a completion status on every page in the TOC.
Question: Why would it get all the way to module 13 until it realizes module 2 has no check in the Multi-SCO menu?
I have combed through ALL my files and consistently have the same functions throughout every slide and every last slide - i.e. module 1 through 13 all continue to next pages until last page where it jumps to next URL.
In the case of module 14, I finalize the course with an End button and it closes the course window to return to the LMS.
The user returns to have no completions in the project menu and no checkmarks in each page.
Items 1, 3, 5, and 6 above are essential SCORM functions that fail in Captivate 5. WHY???
Item 4 above is clearly a blatently obvious bug. Why was it not obvious to Adobe in testing?
Item 2 above, is clearly a bother, as we keep having to deal with the end user and the limited browser viewing area they have due to excessive browser tool-bar usage.
If Anyone can assist in resolving these Captivate issues I have, I will even pay for the service - It's just to bad Adobe can't figure them out before they move this overpriced elephant to market.
My final objective is to have a single TOC per course that opens in a new window with no toolbars (like the non-SCORM publish can do), but it must be SCORM2004 compliant AND have bookmarks working.

  • Surround sound on Mac mini

    Hi guys,
I've been trying to connected by Mac Mini late 2009 to my bose surround system using a 3.5mm cable. However, it produces a very buzzy sound and the sound only comes out from 2-3 out of 5 speakers. Is there any way that I can make it go to the whole 5 speakers without the annoying sound?
    thanks a lot.

Are you using a Toslink optical cable with a miniplug adapter? Only the digital optical can provide you with 5.1 surround audio.

  • Macbook Pro, MacOS 10.7.5, Internal CD Drive not Recognized on Mac side, DOES work on Parallels (Win7) side

2011 Macbook Pro, running MacOS 10.7.5, Internal CD Drive Matshita DVD-R, UJ-8A8 (firmware HB14), doesn't recognize drive when insert CD.  See lots of issues on board about this, haven't seen good resolution yet.
Another clue perhaps... I'm also running Parallels (Build 9.0.24172), with Windows 7 Home Premium (service pack 1 installed), drive recognized and works just fine on the Windows 7 side of the system, which means I can at least load up photos, videos from CDs, drag them over to Mac side, but cannot install Mac software because it won't recognize the drive.
    Suggestions?

You're welcome. I know, it's confusing the first time you encounter it. On an external drive, it'll ask you which OS you want to connect to. I think there's something in Parallels settings for the internal drive, but not sure.

  • Syncing two macs: what will work without icloud?

Hello. I'm considering buying a second mac, or finding a totally different solution. One of the key questions is: can i still sync two macs; or: what, if anything at all, will sync, what won't without using icloud (which is  totally out of the question, and please no debate on that in this thread, i simply want to know the facts).
    Thanks a lot

you may be right. The decimus guys however don't even get their own web site together, which doesn't inspire a lot of trust. Besides, what I really want synchronized, and what I don't see in their list, is iCal, Address Book, everything that happens in mail (sent mail appear as sent on both machines even outside imap accounts), and of course it would help to have everything in like the document folder in sync. If reminders and notes would go in sync, too, good.
Now, like I said you're probably right in principle about the two machines situation. But I might consider getting the smallest MacBook, which probably won't match my MacPro, and won't accept a 2560/1600 external monitor either. Don't know yet.
    Thanks

  • 7.1 surround sound on mac mini

    Hello,
Before I buy a mac mini i'd like to find out how i would get my 7.1 speakers to work on it.
    Its these Gigaworks s750 http://uk.creative.com/products/productarchive.asp?category=4&subcategory=789&pr oduct=9306
    They require 3/4 jacks.
I googled this a lot but found either discontinued products or stuff not available for me here in the UK.
Apple tell me I need an external soundcard to play these but couldnt give me any more info then that.
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The mini can be configured to accommodate 7.1 digital systems, however the easiest way is with an optical digital connection using a Toslink cable. To use this particular system with any Mac you will need to find an external FireWire or USB soundcard that is compatible with a Mac and can accommodate the type and number of cable inputs your system requires.

  • This has probably been covered before-analog surround sound/usb soundcards?

just wondering if this is possible, or if there is such a thing as a USB 5.1 soundcard that works with Macs. The information I've found says 2 channel only
    any rebuttals welcomed
    JB

The only USB adapter known to work for the Mac has long since stopped being developed. However, there is a Firewire adapter:
