Analog to Digital Conversion Via Firewire
I have an HVX-200 and need to do some Analog conversion from older VHS Tapes into FCP 6.0 on my Mac Pro for a current project. I assumed I could just set up the HVX as a non controllable device and begin capturing the input that was visible in the log and capture window. This works pretty well for clips that are a few minutes long, but I don't have much luck if I try to capture 10 or 15 minutes of video in a single clip. Seems FCP just locks up. I used to have a similar problems with my old power book and thought maybe I did not have enough processor or RAM, but with Two 2.6 Dual Cores and 4 Gig of RAM I was thinking this might go a little easier. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I just received the following message on the last crash. Not sure if it helps but here it is and it is very easy to reproduce. My set up today was Consumer VCR RCA Out -> RCA into DVX 100a -> Firewire into MAC Pro 2 X 2.6M 4 GB RAM - FCP 6.0.1 and Quick Time 7.3.1
Still sort of fuzzy on the QT dependency stated previously in the thread. Do you think I should just take this to Apple Support under some sort of paid engagement ?

Advice Wanted: Analog to Digital Conversion
I have a load of Hi8 tapes requiring analog to digital conversion.
My initial thought was to buy a Canopus ADVC-110 for conversion and transfer into Final Cut Express. However, once converted, I would never use the device again (because I would buy a digital camcorder for future use).
Alternatively, I could buy a top-of-the-range Sony Digital8 camcorder for a similar price to the Canopus ADVC-100. This has the ability to play-back and convert Hi8 tapes for transfer to Final Cut Express. The problem is that Digital8 is a dated format.
Third, should I instead buy a MiniDV camcorder, and use my existing Hi8 camcorder connected to the MiniDV and transfer from Hi8 to MiniDV?
Does anyone have experience of these alternative solutions, and what is the better solution in terms of ensuring quality of video transfer?
Also, from what I've read elsewhere, is Firewire still a preferable transfer method over USB?I have both methods covered.
I have found that using the ADVC-100 gives better results, especially as I time base correct the Hi-8 first with a standalone TBC from GTH electronics.
The Hi-8 in a Digital-8 camera works OK, but clips the peak whites a little, losing some detail in any over modulated footage. I can tweak the vision signals, with the GTH TBC first, to avoid this.
I now use the ADVC as a digital converter for recording television programmes, and I can use if necessary (though not strictly legally) for nabbing clips from DVD or VHS for some home movie fun as my GTH removes the macrovision pulse.
On the camcorder front I would always opt for Digital-8, here's why.
Mini DV had significantly reduced head life compared to Digital-8, and has always suffered from compatibility issues between machines, thus footage shot on one camcorder will not necessarily play on another.
In my job I have encountered many problems because of this. Also, Mini DV tapes should only ever be used for one recording. They are very fragile and prone to slight stretch and many drop outs. They are not to be considered for archive purposes or data backup.
Digital-8 on the other hand copes well with old Hi-8 tapes I had long ago consigned to the no good pile. The transports are very stable, being based on proven video-8 technology, and the heads seem to last for ever!
I have abused my Digital-8 camcorder (a DCR-TR7000E) for 6 years, its been on my motorcycle tank many times, and despite being shaken about like a monkey on a spin cycle, give consistently perfect results. I cant remember losing any footage through drop outs. I also use for data back up (using DV backup) of very valuable files, tape still having the longest shelf life of currently available large storage media.
The digital 8 camcorders are rather larger than Mini DV, but if you are serious about video then a tiny camcorder will not be required.
If you are entering the semi-pro arena, and require a high quality front end camera on the camcorder you will be stuck with mini DV. However I get near broadcast quality footage from my D-8, with nothing more than a circular polariser stuck on the front.
Note also that some mini DV camcorders do not have an analogue recording capability, even if they have DV in enabled.
Firewire is better than USB2.
Sorry about the length of this post, but I am passionate about video formats (its my job) and am annoyed when inferior formats win out.

Analog to Digital conversion of hi8 tapes
I have many hi8 video tapes that I have been trying to digitize so that I can import them into my imac. I have connected my analog hi8 camera to a Sony DSC-PC350 mini dv camcorder that has an analog to digital converter (pass through). In the VTR mode I can view my movies on the Sony camcorder. However, when I connect the Sony to the iMac with a firewire, I get a 'no tape' message on my iMovie screen. At the same time the video screen on the Sony camcorder goes blank. Can someone help me with this problem? Or is it possible that you cannot import a conversion on iMovie '09?

I also compared it to the manual of my TVR-330 which is a Digital8 camcorder and does have the pass through functionality. I did that to find the wording they use when talking about pass through (Sony never calls it "pass through"). All indications of the manual for your camcorder indicate you can input an analog signal and record it to digital tape. But nothing indicates you can use the camcorder as an A2D pass through device like you can with my Digital8 model.
So you will have to go through the two step process of first recording onto the MiniDV with tape. Then secondly importing it to the Mac. If you want to use that one.

it looks like that one WILL do the pass through function (see page 173 of the manual). So if you want to skip the tape part then use the TRV22 camcorder instead.

Analog-to-Digital Conversion produces Static sound
Hi all,
I'm trying to import some video from my Sony Handycam Hi8 camera into iMovie HD with an ADS Technologies Pyro AV Link (API-550) and the video imports wonderfully, and when the video is playing on screen during import the sound is great, but when I playback the imported footage the sound is extremely staticy, producing a sort of "machine-gun" style sound of static. I am able to import successfully with no problems in Final Cut Express HD and also to record using Quicktime Player Pro and the sound is normal, so this only happens in iMovie. I even tried iMovie 3.03 and the result was the same. I've read some reports of people with the same issues, but I have not read of anyone with a fix or a workaround. The kicker is the very first time I tried this (about a week and a half ago) it worked great, sound was normal and I was very pleased. And if I fiddle with it a LOT (including rebooting, unplugging the camera and the concerter) eventually it WILL work, but I only know it works after I stop the import, but if I start it up again the problem continues. I can't successfully reproduce the steps that make it work again. I have 2 hours of footage to import so I'd rather not waste two hours importing the whole thing HOPING the sound will be fine.
Any ideas?

Mac mini 1.25GHz/Superdrive Mac OS X (10.4.3)I have the Formac and could not get Formac to reply

so I bought the PYRO and now I still have the same
problem....The work around that everyone proposes to
extract the audio works fine, but I have never been
able to get the audio back in sync....What i did do
is import to QuickTime Pro then import to iMovie HD
and it works OK....there is nothing on the PYRO
support site that helps with the static....I am going
to send them an email
I have since gotten my Pyro to work properly in iMovie. The biggest difference between what I was doing then and what I am doing now is NOW I am not manually putting the Pyro into Analog conversion mode. I turn on the Pyro and the blue light comes on (signifying Digital conversion mode) and the manual says to turn it over to analog (making the light red), which is what I was doing (and thus, getting static). However, I have now been just turning on the Pyro, leaving it on digital mode (blue light) opening iMovie, setting it to import mode, and then hitting import. The Pyro automatically goes into Analog mode and I get a successful import, no static.
Give it a shot, see if it works for you.

No Analog to Digital Conversion Imports, eh?
Been messing around with FCPX using previously imported FCE files. FCPS doesn't care that they are VHS footage imported to FCE using my DV camera as an Analog-to-Digital Converter. It results in DV camera footage iimported as FCE .mov files, with which FCPX is quite happy.
This worked great until I decided to try the same procedure with the "new, improved" FCPX.
FCPX recognized the DV camera, displayed the video coming thru the camera from the VHS player, and had no objection when I pressed the import button. However, tuff cookies on actually importing anything. It created an Event, but placed no files in it.
Now, just as a side note, when I actually put a DV tape in the camera, FCPX controls the camera just fine. Naturally, as a AV/DV converter, there are no controls, and FCPX notes in the upper left corner "Not a Controllable Camera", and when "import" is started it replaces that with a clock counting up the import duration. But no file results.
Apparently, like Apple itself, FCPX doesn't play well (or at all) with anything it can't control.
Anyone actually found a way to get media imported from a tape-based camera which FCPX can't control?
I'm doing just fine importing to disk via FCE and then importing the files to FCPX.
But, really? No way to do it directly?Well, I suspected as much, but how ya gonna know for sure if you don't ask?
At least I learned I can use QTPro 7 for more than cycling FCE 640x480 anamorphic .mov files into 853x480 .mov widescreen files for iDVD input.
Never even looked at QTPro for capturing. Thanks.
Edit: Took a quick look, and I'm supposing that if I have my "Converter Camera" turned on, it will give me that choice over my iMac camera, but I also noted I apparently can also use QTPro 7 to toss in Chapter Markers on the way to iDVD.
May not work for "power users" and their HD formats, but for working with DVDs as the target output its worth checking out.
As Macked said in his related thread (that I missed when I searched), its just plain stupid to have to use two (actually 3) programs for these simple tasks.

I wonder how the Digital AV adaptor works? I heard the ipad 30-pin connector does not have digital video out. Does it have an Analog to Digital converter inside the adaptor?
Yes..same thing here..I get a pop up saying This Accessory is not Suported...I click Ok and I get a 4x3 "mirror" mode on my TV. However when I play a movie it is in the proper aspect. Same goes for the SlingBox" app. I tested photos and they appear in the 4x3 ratio as well.
I only use the adapter for the occasional movie while staying in hotels so it's not a big deal to me that most of the items are in a 4x3 ratio.
I'm coming from an iPad 1 so mirroring wasn't an option so technically, I didn't even know what I was missing..not sure if the iPad 2 mirror function displays in 16x9 ( or whatever the native aspect is ) -
Recommendations for Analog to Digital conversion
I am seeking the help of all the Pros out there. I am moving my extensive analog music collection (LP/Cassette) to the digital world. Are there any recommendations for creating a CD-quality sound/volume level. I am currently using the standards (click/pop/hiss reduction, compressor and/or hard limiting). I am recording at 44.1/16 Bit and saving files in mp3 PRO-320 kbps for sake of storage. I welcome any assistance in regard to Plug-ins, equalization or other suggestions.

You shouldn't save files as MP3s until all the processing you want to do has been done - this is a lossy format, and every time you open a file saved like this it gets re-decoded, and then re-encoded when you do a save. And the quality degeneration is progressive. And unfortunately, recording your files as 16-bit is also not going to be quite the thing to do if you are going to do any sort of amplitude processing at all, either, especially if you are recording at a lower-than-optimum amplitude, which is usually the case. 44.1k is fine, though!
So, to get over the potential problems, the thing to do is to digitise your files as 44.1k 32-bit floating point, and until all processing is done, store them as Windows PCM wav files in this format, because that is uncompressed, which is what you need.
If you want to reduce noise on cassette recordings, it's worth using a fairly high FFT setting, even though it takes longer to do the processing. Since most of the noise is not LF, this tends to work better, although there is also a case for doing the NR twice, once with a lower FFT setting and once with a higher one, but not trying to take out too much in one go.
As for click reduction - well, you have to experiment. But letting the software determine all of the levels tends to give you a pretty good starting point. Another trick that's sometimes worth it is to transform your files temporarily to M-S stereo instead of L-R, and treat each channel separately - you generally get different levels of clicks in each, usually more in the S signal, whilst the M cancels out quite a few. And in general, the less clicks you can get away with processing, the better.
Hard limiting? Never used it on a conversion like that at all, and wouldn't even consider it - transients are already likely to be distorted, and hard limiting them further seems like a
very strange thing to do...
Other tools that are useful, especially on cassettes are iZotope's Ozone (some of which is already in Audition) and HarBal. You can restore usually distorted frequency responses with the latter, and get a good average value automatically and easily. And judicious use of Ozone's enhancer can make them seem a lot less like the results came from a cassette...
One of the useful things you can do with Ozone is to selectively widen parts of the spectrum. Since most records of music tend (for reasons of tracking) to have had the bass forced to be virtually mono, with subsequent similar consequences for other instruments with substantial LF content, it's worth expanding just about everything under about 250Hz, possibly by more than you might think.
Generally, 'normal' EQ doesn't have a lot of use when processing vinyl, if it's relatively recent. And that generally means anything from the 60's onwards. If you think things are seriously wrong, the chances are that it's your monitors and environment that are misleading you. Just bear in mind that when this stuff was produced, it was all monitored in a professional environment - more so than it might be today, even.
No doubt there will be a few other responses - I don't think that the foregoing is anything like complete, but is at least a start. -

Analog-to-Digital Conversion Hardware
I have a G5 running 10.4.4. I want to take some of my old vhs tapes and convert them to digital so I can save to DVD. Any ideas on what is compatable?
Pinnacle "Dazzle" Says it's all PC only. Canopus has no mention of it supporting Mac. I don't need an professional item, just something that will sync sound with video.The Canopus products are a great choice.
I've been using the ADVC 100 for a few years and it has perform very well. Works directly with iMovie, Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro.
One thing to consider, if your VHS tapes are old or were not well recorded, you may need a TBC (Time Base Corrector) to allow the tapes to be read and converted correctly. TBC's remove the jitter that is common with some VHS tapes, and which can cause problems when being converted to DV format. If you need a TBC, they can be purchased as separate units, can be purchased as part of a VHS player (JVC makes a few), or can be purchased as part of the DV converters (the Canopus ADVC 300 includes TBC).

Sony digital8 camcorder via firewire port, is it digital or analog?

I was successful to view & record from my Sony digital8 cam via firewire port. I'd like to know, is this connection analog or digital? Has anyone been successful to record, back up and edit their precious home videos on a G4 PowerMac? And how many DVD discs will it take on a full Digital8 cartridge?

Yes. Before the G5 came out, many people used G4s (and some still do) to edit not only home videos, but commercial television programs as well.
how many DVD discs will it take on a full Digital8 cartridge?
A standard DVD-5 (single layer disc) will hold about two hours of DVD-Video ... video AFTER it's been properly compressed to meet the DVD-Video standard.
However, if you're asking about raw footage (not compressed more than it was recorded), you should be able to get close to 14 minutes of footage per 4.7gb disc. Digital8 uses the DV codec which requires about 13.3gb per hour of footage. If you recorded the tape in SP mode, you should be able to get just over 1 hour of footage per tape.

Analog to Digital (ie VHS to DVD)
As much as I love the internet I think I've overloaded myself with information, lol.
I have some home movies on VHS that I would like to transfer to DVD and have them be compatible with tweaking in iDVD or iMovie (I'm totally new to Mac BTW, I've only had my Macbook Pro for a little over a month).
I know I need to buy a VCR.... this is where my confusion comes in ... should I just buy a VCR/DVD combo (I'm looking at an LG RC797T for $250 @ Best Buy) and record the VHS tapes to a DVD on the machine? Will that video on the newly burned DVD now be digital video that will be importable and editable (are those words?) on my MBP with iDVD and/or iMovie?
Or, do I need to go w/some sort of analog to digital converter? I was looking at purchasing either a Canon Elura 100 Mini-DV or Canon ZR700 Mini-DV camcorder since they do analog to digital conversion (would have to go from VCR, out via S-Video into the Camcorder and then out of the Camcorder via Firewire into the Mac (actually an external HDD will be necessary so I don't suck up all my space).
I'm not a guru when it comes to file compression and rendering and video formats and all that happy stuff - I'd like a simple method that works well and produces a decent quality DVD.
I think if I can do it w/just the VHS/DVD machine that'll be the route I take (it'll be least expensive). If I have to buy a camcorder along w/a VHS machine then that's adding $$ to the project and I still need to buy an external HDD - scouring good sales for that info.

I agree w/ Sue and Kirk. If you want to edit these old movies, you need to digitize the footage onto DV format.
I just connected my camcorder to my VCR (It is the VCR/TV combo unit and worked fine for this) and recorded the raw VHS footage onto DV tapes. Yes, there were a lot....I think I have about 150 DV tapes (one hour each).
I have been slowly importing them into my iMovies as I create them. I put my still photos and videos in chronologic order, so I import about one or two tapes per movie. Usually the 60min tape gets edited down quite a bit before I am finished. You know, you have plenty of bad shots, blurry images, terrific movies of the floor, ceiling, your hand, etc that can be cropped out.
If you really don't need to edit your movies, and just want them preserved as DVDs, I know that the Sony VHS/DVD combo unit works great. My brother copied some of his old Muhammed Ali fight tapes that he had recorded from tv. He didn't need to edit, just was afraid that the VHS tapes were degrading.
However, I recommended to him that he do the same as I, and get the footage on DV tapes to preserve them. I am sure that DVDs are not going to be the technology of the future. They can become broken, melted, scratched, etc. I save all my edited movies on DVDs and on more DV tapes. I (almost)always export my finished movies back to my camcorder after I have made my DVD.
The DV tapes are small, can be easily stored in a cool dry environment, and your memories are not lost.
Because VHS tapes are not great quality to begin with, you could (and I have done this also) copy the finished DVD to your camcorder by connecting them and recording from the DVD. Supposedly there is a quality loss, but you will not notice because the digital version of your movies will be so much better than the original. I have occasionally had to do it this way when I deleted my iMovie after making my DVD, but forgot to export it back to the camera. -
Capturing HDV Into ProRes 422 (LT) Via FireWire

Since you can choose ProRes 422 (LT) as an option in the Log and Transfer window, I was wondering if there is a way to capture HDV to ProRes 422 (LT) via firewire like in the above mentioned article.
I tried creating a custom capture setting in the AV Settings, but ProRes 422 (LT) was not available as an option, only ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 (HQ). And those settings cannot be edited or duplicated (grayed out).
I don’t know why ProRes 422 (LT) is available in the Log and Transfer window but not in the AV Settings window. Maybe it will become available in an update.
In the meantime, does anyone know a way to get around this? Maybe modifying an FCP file somewhere?

RichardHDV is recorded to tape inside of the camera as digital information. Component coming out of the camera is analog. The camera is performing the first conversion D/A, from HDV (digital) to component out (analog).
Component going into the ioHD is analog. The ioHD then converts via its hardware to Prores (any flavor), which is digital. The ioHD has to convert the analog from the component outs of my camera to digital for use in FCP. FCP only uses digital video.
You said "The IOHD internally converts to ProRes.." converts to ProRes is the second A/D conversion.
So the path is D/A/D. I count that as two conversions, camera D/A as one the ioHD A/D as two.
I don't want to unnecessarily convert from digital to analog to digital which is why I don't use the ioHD to convert from HDV to Prores (any flavor).
Unfortunately I don't have any digital outs for this camera, neither HDMI or HD SDI.
I believe capturing and converting HDV to ProRes via firewire in FCP doesn't have this D/A/D conversion which is why I'd like to be able to capture HDV to ProRes LT via firewire in FCP and stay digital all the way, with no analog conversions.
I use the ioHD for all of my analog to digital conversions. It's a great box from a great company.

My seven year old Canon ZR-40 MiniDV camcorder has analog to digital conversion feature. I have used it often to import analog AV into iMovie. It has worked quite well. Perhaps a friend has a similar one you can borrow. You could also search eBay for old similar camcorders. Even broken models sold "as is" for a few dollars might have the analog-digital feature still working. Good luck. -

i've a problem concerning analog to digital conversion using my spartan e3 fpga.
I set the PreAmp as recommended in the User Guide and want to start analog to digital conversion.
I also disable the other SPI devices in order to read out the MISO properly. But when i've no signal neither on
ADC A nor on ADC B i can read out values, which a different from zero. And the most confusing thing is, that
the values are changing with the time.
I also use a 34 cycles to read out the data properly.

an analog-digital converter needs a input source with a well-defined impedance.
If you have an open analog input (floating) the ADC provides you with any value. Mostly this value changes slowly.

Also when we lived this problem we have already contacted with sony support and no problem from this side. Iam still thinking the problem is firewire port at macbook pro. Finally we contacted exclusive dealer of apple in my country but they didn't solve and understand the problem yet until today (it passed 15 days)
