Analog to digital sound input

I have a Mackie mixing board sending a stereo signal to a Sony DVMC analog to digital converter box. I can capture audio in FCP (although I can't hear it via headphones while capturing) but it plays back fine. I'm trying to get soundtrack or garageband to see firewire audio in via the converter box, but it's not being recognized. Any ideas?
Thanks,
K

let's see, i have a 14-channel mixer that i use as my sound centralizer.... microphone, vcr, phono, guitar, video recorder, 4-track stereo in, DVD player, and G4 output.... i send a control room signal to my amplifier... i use headphone output from my computer.

no, you can not use that device, because usb-devices need specific 'drivers', which in most cases are of no avail for Mac ..

  • Analog to digital: sound is only in left speaker, but I want it in both

I converted an old VHS tape to digital with my digital camcorder and imported it to iMovie. However, the VCR only had one audio output, not two for Right and Left. I tapped into the left (as I could only do one or the other).
Now, all my sound only comes through the left channel. I know the video will not be stereo, but is there a way I can get sound through the left and right channels?

Hmmm, I'm afraid this may be a lost cause. Is there really no way to simply make the movie mono instead of stereo with iMovie? The suggestion of using QuickTime didn't work for me, as I described above, but I found a way to accomplish the same result wih iTunes. The problem is, first off, this seems really hokey to have to go through so many steps, in different programs, just to make the sound mono. Secondly, when I import the (now mono) audio back into iMovie, it will be very difficult to make it sync up perfectly with the video. Multiply this task with about twenty or more clips, and it will be very time consuming, and likely to have audio that does not match perfectly with the video (which is simply not acceptable). Is that really the best (only) way to get the sound to come out of both speakers?

  • Analog sound signal no digital sound

I have a A660-BT2G25 laptop which includes DOLBY® Advanced Audio.  I connected it via an HDMI cable to the back of my Denon receiver and set the receiver to receive either digital sound input or analog sound input from the laptop that I am currently using as part of my entertainment center. All items in my device manager are operating properly (the system shows NVIDIA High Definition Audio under sound four identical times with all divers identical in each, all with normal operation & no conflicts-not sure if this is normal). The computer recognizes the Receiver as an Denon AVAMP-3 in the sound setup in Control Panel. Further,  I have set it as the default and run test after test. The properties there indicate the device is operating normally and shows DTS, Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus. w/HDCP supported, up to 192 sampling rate, 16 & 24 bit. Here is the rub. My receiver is only receiving analog signals under PCM (analog signal) and not DTS (digital) so while the sound is good and clear per my receiver upgrading the signal, there is no digital splitting of the signal to the 5.1 channels. If I force the receiver to take only DTS signals over the HDMI cable there is no sound at all. There is nothing wrong with the receiver. Anybody have any suggestions???

Hi, I just purchased a Mac Pro and am running 10.5.2. I am seeing the exact same behaviour when using the optical digital out from the Mac Pro to a Teac Receiver. It takes about 5 seconds for the audio to start playing from a "silence". If there is continuous playback there are no problems, but if there is ever a significant pause in the audio the receiver shows "unlock" on the display and stops playing out audio.
It certainly does seem like the digital stream is getting interrupted which then causes an issue with the receiver.
I haven't been able to find a solution yet.

  • Access to digital sound

Recently purchased dx735 all in one.  I noticed that where the audio out jack is to be on the back is actually for the ir blaster remote.  I have connected the system to boston surround sound speakers capable of producing both analog and digital sound.  I can get analog sound through the headphone output but no digital.  Digital also does not show up as an option in the realtek app.  Getting no sound through side speakers as they are also not an option in realtek. The boston speakers did produce digital and surround sound using my old desktop. Any suggestions?

    Hi
Have you tried reinstalling the drivers or checking online for updated drivers?  Check the sound properties to ensure you have not checked against anything?

  • Producer consumer with analog and digital inputs and outputs

    Hi everyone,
I am working on a control system program for some practical test work. Currently I am working on the data acuisition component of the Labview program. My architecture is produced-consumer loops with a que. My system will have analog inputs, analog outputs, digital inputs and digital outputs. It's not a time critical sytem, but I would like all of the data acquisition to be synchronised. I have attached my program as it is at the moment. I am having trouble getting all of the data into the que since I have two data types. Also, I'm not sure if i've synchronised the four read/write sequences correctly. I would greatly appreciate if somebody could take a look at my program and give me some advice. Thanks in advance.

Robert, the specific error that I get is:
Error -200462 occurred at DAQmx Start Task.vi:6
    Possible reason(s):
Generation cannot be started because the output buffer is empty.
Write data before starting a buffered generation. The following actions can empty the buffer: changing the size of the buffer, unreserving a task, setting the Regeneration Mode property, changing the Sample Mode, or configuring retriggering.
Task Name: Heater testing lab digital outputs
This error occurs at the 'DAQmx write.vi' function. I just want to sent one sample per second, for each channel. I would like the producer and consumer loops to each run once every second.
I have attached part of my code with just the data acquisition and writing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Simultaneous analog and digital waveform read with PXIe-6361 and BNC2120 ?

    Hi there,
I am trying to collect both analog and digital signals from a PXIe-6361 linked to a BNC2120, using the attached VI. I am running Labview 2011 64bit. This is the first time I am working with digital input. On the 2120 board, I have the digital input BNC cable connected to User Input 1 and wire between the screw terminal of UserInput 1 and the P0.1 (Digtial I/O) screw terminal.
I have two questions related to this:
    1) When I try to run the VI in its current state, I get the following error:
Error -89137 occurred at DAQmx Start Task.vi:3
Possible reason(s): Specified route cannot be satisfied, because it requires resources that are currently in use by another route.

    Source Device: PXI1Slot2
    Source Terminal: None
    Destination Device: PXI1Slot2
    Destination Terminal: RefClockInternal
Can anyone point me in the right direction for troubleshooting this?
    2) I would like to combine my regular waveforms and the digital waveform into one array which would then be written to file. I can't figure out how to combine the two different waveform types...can anyone give me a hint on this?
    Thanks for your help,

    Hi ClaireJ,
Sounds like a reference clock conflict. This KnowledgeBase (KB) talks about this error when using simultaneous sampling. Also, might want to check the device routes in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) as discussed here. Finally, if you are routing your PFI line over a RTSI connection, this error can occur. This KB discusses it.
As to your second question, this post should help.

  • Optical digital audio input

I have an early 2009 iMac Duo Core 2 with the combo digital audio in/out. I ordered the correct cable which fits perfectly into the back of the iMac. I've plugged the other end into three different audio devices that have digital audio out.
While I get activity on the input level for the Optical digital-in port in system prefs, it does not come out through the iMac speakers. Other sounds (system alerts, iTunes, etc) play through the speakers but getting the computer to play the digital audio input does not work.

There's an excellent little piece of software called LineIn from Rouge Amoeba that does exactly what you're looking for, get it from here: http://rogueamoeba.com/freebies/. I was using it for redirecting sound coming in via an optical cable to iMac's digital line-in to my headphones attached to iMac's audio-out. Also works great for outputting anything coming to digital-in out to an external audio receiver using digital-out. My set-up was: PC, Xbox 360, PS3 all connected to Sony's Bravia screen and passing sound through HDMI (plus a Wii attached to Bravia via analog inputs), Bravia's digital audio out connected to iMac's digital-in and then finally iMac analog/stereo-out --> headphones or iMac digital-out to Logitech's Z-5500 receiver's TOSLINK connector. TV's aren't allowed to stream unencrypted AC3/DTS coming in from HDMI to their digital audio out though so only stereo was available in the above setup (connecting a PC/Xbox360/PS3 using an optical cable with TOSLINK and mini-TOSLINK connectors directly to the digital line-in on iMac does enable one to pass through Dolby Digital/DTS to iMac's line-out and to an external receiver). I'm using past tense here becase Apple decided not to include any audio-in functionality whatsoever on the new line of iMacs (late 2012). Still looking for a solution to that problem (a MacBook Alu 13" is doing the sound redirection in the mean time).

  • How can the optical digital audio input be enabled on the 2011 Mac mini?

I am trying to record signals output from my audio receiver's digital SPDIF output.  I have a TOSLINK optical cable between the receiver's output and my MAC mini's audio input (via the TOSLINK to 3.5mm optical adapter).  Does this digital optical input need to be enabled through the OS?

Also, make sure it is showing up in System Preferences->Sound->
    Input as optical.
Also, make sure it is plugged ALL the way in.  I know on
my 2011 Mini, even with just analog plugs, it is a very
snug fit and often it feels like I have pushed in all the way
when in fact it isn't and needs an addition pretty firm push.

  • Digital sound output from G3 700mhz

Can I output digital sound from my ibook G3 700mhz to my Nad Digital amp, which can input using either optical cable or single digital phono cable?
If so which cable should I use and where can I get one from. Many Thanks Alex2001

Not directly, no, since your iBook doesn't have a digital output, only a stereo analog output. There are external USB and Firewire audio output devices that would provide a digital output, but I can't make a specific recommendation. Perhaps if you ask in the iBook G3 area, someone can make a suggestion.

  • MBP video out to TV using DVI - both analog and digital?

I have a Macbook Pro 10.6.4 2008 Model with details are below on graphics card and display options. I am trying two hookups to televisions which may or may not be possible. Can anyone tell me if my DVI output on the macbook pro is capable of delivering an analog signal to my old sony tube tv with component inputs? Second part of my question is do I have the right dvi cable. I purchased a cable with 24 + 5 pin. This cable does not produce a picture on my analog or digital television. Just snow on the analog and no input on the digital. The cable that came with my macbook pro is a DVI to VGA converter and seems to be an 18 + 5 pin plug....with a few pins missing in the middle. Should I buy another cable with the 18 + 5 pin DVI to component or buy a cable to connect the supplied DVI to VGA converter - VGA to component. Please help I'm confused on many fronts.

I made an account and am replying to this because i have the exact same computer as you and i was also at best buy at around 3pm wondering the exact same things you were! The DVI port on our MacBooks are different than the standard DVI ports. Freaking weiiiiiiiiiiiiiird! Get out of my head!!!!
I ended up buying a VGA cable and using the converter that came with my MBP because the DVI to VGA cables at Best Buy had a different VGA than what the MBP has.
Our goals were slightly different though, I wanted a cable so i can connect the MBP to my Toshiba 42inch HDTV. VGA works but doesnt support 1080p, only 1024x768, which is not a fullscreen resolution. So i will be returning the VGA cable tomorrow and looking for a VGA to HDMI cable, if that exist.
So, to answer your question, YES, buy a cable that has the same ports as our adapter, or just use the adapter that came with the Macbook.

  • Apple TV3 HDMI - DVI jack fine. TV has no DVI digital audio input.

I can buy a converter from HDMI to DVI for video, My TV does not have a digital audio input for the optical cable.  I may be able to plug into my sony surround sound amp in to the SA-DC CD in optical port and just play through the surround sound all the time?  Which would not give me sound if I used the TVs internal speakers?  Or there may be a converter from an optical audio to a R & L DVI Audio Input Jack?

Before you do just note that HDMI is the only supported connection so there will be no guarantee with any converter used. If it does work you will be unable to view protected content, unless your monitor specifies HDCP compliance. Functionality could also cease at any time.
The optical port is for connecting to a receiver, which you would need to do as DVI doesn't carry audio.

  • Analog to digital protocol

    Hi again,
I got a lot of help yesterday on hardware devices that allow capture of analog video. Thanks.
That got me to wondrin... If I'm going to try to do this, I might as well learn the basics.
When a card or outboard hardware device captures and digitizes analog video (with audio) for import to a Macintosh, what is it doing, exactly? It seems like it might be converting the analog data to a digital format or protocol. If so, what format or protocol is it?
Do these devices have a dedicated processor on board, running a codec? Or do they do something less demanding, move the data to the computer, and then let the computer's CPU run the codec?
If the codec runs on the capture device, that would explain why some such products get a lot of praise while others earn general contempt. It would depend on the speed of the processor running the codec, it seems. In that case, you probably get what you pay for, more or less.
If I'm getting the fundamentals all wrong, just tell me!
    Cheers,
    Tim

    Hi
    Just some thoughts.
In my mind the videoconverter converts an analog video + audio signal
to streamind DV (digital format) that can be read by the FireWire port that
    only accepts digital info.
So at least there is an analog to digital converting chip inside and in more
advanced models the other way around. Quality and speed is vital I think.
But the boxes/cards can sometimes make more. That may indicate some
more logic like a CPU or a signal processor of some kind.
My Canopus ADVC 300 can alter the video and sound so I get a better
material to work with and I get the feeling of that it even fixes some drop-
outs on the VHS tape. This I think can be worth to pay for.

  • Analog to Digital conversion of hi8 tapes

I have many hi8 video tapes that I have been trying to digitize so that I can import them into my imac. I have connected my analog hi8 camera to a Sony DSC-PC350 mini dv camcorder that has an analog to digital converter (pass through). In the VTR mode I can view my movies on the Sony camcorder. However, when I connect the Sony to the iMac with a firewire, I get a 'no tape' message on my iMovie screen. At the same time the video screen on the Sony camcorder goes blank. Can someone help me with this problem? Or is it possible that you cannot import a conversion on iMovie '09?

Hi again ftts (having a little trouble pronouncing that)
I went to the Sony web site and simply downloaded the operator's manual for that camcorder...
    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=DCRPC350
I also compared it to the manual of my TVR-330 which is a Digital8 camcorder and does have the pass through functionality. I did that to find the wording they use when talking about pass through (Sony never calls it "pass through"). All indications of the manual for your camcorder indicate you can input an analog signal and record it to digital tape. But nothing indicates you can use the camcorder as an A2D pass through device like you can with my Digital8 model.
So you will have to go through the two step process of first recording onto the MiniDV with tape. Then secondly importing it to the Mac. If you want to use that one.
    For the DCR-TRV22 ...
    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=DCRTRV22
it looks like that one WILL do the pass through function (see page 173 of the manual). So if you want to skip the tape part then use the TRV22 camcorder instead.
    Cheers,
    Patrick
