Analog video 8 to DVD

I just transferred all my 8mm videos to DVD using a Toshiba DVD recorder. Previous failed attempts with a PC and Dazzle box brought me to buy a mac becasue all my friends said "you wont have these problems with a mac... IMovie is easy". So now I find that IMovie wont understand the DVDs I made, either formatted or non formatted. What do I need to do to get these movies into a format so that my 17 yr old daughter (who knows how to edit on IMovie) can begin to make a small film for a family enet that is quickly approaching? Is there a program to convert the DVD information or do I have to get something like a firewire cable (for an old Sony Analog S8 Video) and tediously watch the tape spin into the computer?
Your help is very much appreciated.

...super 8 film in cartridges and on reels. Want to convert to DVD...
hmm, that is less a computer, more a "mechanical" problem
you could use your projector and the silverscreen in a dark room, place your camcorder close aside the projector and "record" the projection..
problems:
"hot spot" - the middle of the projection is much brighter then the broders
flicker - your super8s use 20, 18, 15, 12 (?) fps, video is in the US 30fps...
sharpness/brightness - your camcorder has to be able to switch off any automatics, otherwise, the pic will "pulse"...
for a few takes, I would give that a try... to transfer family's history, I would spend a dime... they use xx k$ hardware, which accomplishes that task much better (make a test, before transfering all 127 wheels of film...)
buuut:
try to find a company which transfers from super8 to miniDV (=tape)!!
in case, you want to edit the footage, you avoid loss during the lossy process of converting dvd=>iMovie...
you have much more options to create a nice (=edit just the best scenes), good sounding (add commentary & music), excellent looking (menus) dvd on your Mac....

  • Converting analog video to DVD

I have VHS and VHS-C (I have the adaptor for this). I want feed them into iMovie. Does anyone suggest a converter? I found Formac's StudioDV. Does anyone know anything about this? IS this good? It is about $115 or so. What other options are there? Any help here would be appreciated.

If you have a digital camcorder it may have analog/digital pass through that allows this conversion. I needed a new camcorder in 2001 so I purchased a camera with this feature instead of a dedicated unit like you mention. My tapes are now converted and I still have a camcorder.

  • How do I transfer analog video tapes to dvd format using 10.6.8 iMac?

I've recently retired and now want to take on this project of transferring old analog video onto dvds. What do I need to get started?

I had the same question a couple of years ago and discovered a device called "Elgato Video Capture" that digitizes analog video as it plays on your VCR while transferring it to your computer. There may be newer devices/software available now, but the Elgato system works amazingly well. Here is the link to their website: https://www.elgato.com/en/video/video-capture.  Happy transferring!

  • Capture analog video audio for MacBook

Is there an inexpensive way to get analog video and audio in/out using my MacBook? I'll be using Final Cut Pro 5.1 Studio to edit. Most of my media will be from my BetaCam SX camera. I will be exporting to DVD, Beta and who knows what for broadcast and internet. Thanks for the help. Gary

The cheapest viable choice you have is to go DV-rez for your project. All you'll need is a Firewire breakout box such as a Canopus, Pyro AV, or other similar box - they usually cost around the $200 mark.

  • Converting old analog video with maximum resoultion for archieving and eventual use in iMovie

There seems to be a lot of information on converting old (amatuer) analog video media to a digital format, and which one is best to preserve the maximum amount of data.  I have already imported old VHS, analog 8, hi8, and dv into iMovie interations from iMovie 6 and forward.  The later versions seem to convert the older files to their own format, I suspect, with a loss of data.  I want to reimport the old media to create masters in the best digital format for eventual editing by iMovie 11, or whatever iMovie comes after that.
I have the following formats:  VHS, super VHS, 8MM, Hi8, DV, and a memory card (from a camera which is not directly compatible with iMovie 11)
    I have the following equimpent:
SONY dual deck VHS DVD.  This allows me to convert VHS directly to DVD.  I can later decode using Handbreak, and import etc. but it seems I would be losing quality.
SONY Digital 8 handicam.  This will play analog tape and output a digital file.  I do not know the quality of the output.
Canon VIXIA HFS100, HD camcorder.  This uses memory cards.  It is NOT compatible with iMovie 11, which I should have checked before I bought it.  I have played around with the memory card and have been able to import video but, I do not know the quality, and I've forgotten how I did it.
MacBook Pro, about 4 years old, with a 2Ghz Intel core duo processor and 2GHz Ram.  This is obviously not state of the art.  I am willing to upgrade within the Mac family but I don't what to upgrade to for my purposes
Canopus ADVC 110. This as DV out via a firewire port, and a DV in/out.  It also has svideo in, and composit in.
    I have the following software:
iMovie 6, iMovie 9, and iMovie 11.  I am fairly comfortable with each version.
Final Cut Express, circa 2006.  I would have to learn this.
Handbreak.  I use this to rip the DVDs I made with SONY deck.  It outputs all kinds of video codecs but is obviously working with compressed imput files.  I don't know if I could get it to accept input directly from one of the cameras or the Canopus.
Audacity.  I'm using this to combine audio tracks from various sources to add commentary to silent videos, which i would like to add as a voice over track to my iMovies
Toast.  I think this can convert files of one video format to another in the process of copying.
Thanks for any advice on any part of this question.

    Yes
I found a program but am experiencing lots of trouble with it. I was hoping that others could give me a better suggestion.
I've actually downloaded and installed ffmpeg but the problem I'm experiencing now is that the videos do not convert. The program starts to work and then three seconds later I get the dialog box that says everything has been converted but the file created is 0KB and of course will not open.
Any ideas about what could be going wrong? I've attempted to convert the files to different formats and try converting different files as well. I still have the problem.

  • Analog Video / Audio Card to Support FinalCut Studio2

Hi guys, I am looking for a audio / video card for my MacPro OS X 10.5.2 system which will allow a regular Analog Cassette Player / DVD unit to connect and port either video + audio or audio only signals into the computer into either of the following formats:
.avi / .mp3 / Quicktime / MPG4 files etc. I already have a Firewire and USB ports currently. Thanks.

Canopus 110 or Canopus 300. They will convert the signal into a DV signal and the 300 will even clean it up.

  • Import Analog Video

    Hi,
I would like to import analog video into my Mac so that I can edit and extract video. I have many analog video tapes and I would like to import into my Mac. I can output video to my analog video camera or to a VCR but can't input. There is a unit, Elgato's EyeTV, for viewing TV that imports but I don't plan on watching TV on my Mac. I hear you can burn to DVD with a VHS-DVD deck and Extract from the DVD using software (Hand-Brake).
I saw a cheap unit that works with Windows which interfaces through, I believe, USB 2 port but it didn't seem to be Mac suported.
Looking for suggestions I have open slots on my G4 Mac for PCI cards.

There is a unit, Elgato's EyeTV,...
It is possible to use the Elgato EyeTV devices (and EyeTV software) to capture analog video. The Elgato devices record mpg-2 video on your hard drive and you can then use something like DVDxDV or MPEG-Streamclip to convert the mpg-2 content to DV video for use in iMovie,
Since you will be starting with VHS tapes, you shouldn't loose any additional quality in the process.

  • Archiving analog video digitally for later editing

    Hi:
I'm a newbie to iMovie and have been through the discussion threads without finding an answer. Thanks in advance for any help.
I have about 16 hours of analog tape from a Hi 8 Sony camcorder. I just picked up a Canon ZR200 which allows me to use the analog to digital passthrough feature to move the old analog tape to the computer. I've been able to import some video and have some rather huge files. I see in the forums that an hour of DV video is about 13 GB which is consistent with what I have on my computer.
I have two objectives here. First, I want to archive the clips from the analog tapes to DVD in a raw and unedited format. Essentially, I want to have a DVD copy of the tapes I have presently. However, I also want to later be able to go back and edit the video backed up on DVD into more concise clips using iMovie and put together several separate DVDs of the edited material.
I don't want to just backup the raw DV files to DVD as data files because they're so huge. I have about 20 G free on my computer, so I can't archive there and I'm trying to avoid buying an external HD.
Is there some way to archive the unedited video on DVD (as data or movie) so that I can later reedit?

In reading your response and other threads, I am
assuming that when I Share to a Full Quality movie, I
am making a quicktime movie as the output which will
be much smaller than the DV file; is this correct?
The Shared movie is smaller because it is shorter. But in terms of quality, the Full Quality export is exactly the same content as the DV video used in the iMovie HD project.
In iMovie HD, a "Full Quality" export creates a movie that matches the natural video of the currently active iMovie project. The video format varies by project type. A DV project exports to a different movie format than an HDV 720p project, for example.
(Note: The image quality of the DV you see in QT Player may not look very good by default, but that's because its High Quality playback features need to be turned on. In QT 7, you can do it in QT preferences.)
With no discernible loss in quality?
That's correct. There will be no loss of quality.
Thanks again for your help, Karl.
    You're welcome.

  • Does premiere elements support analog video

I have DVD's of analog videos burned from a 8mm Camcorder recorded in UDF format. Does Premiere Elements support analog video for editing?

    theodorepost
Thanks for what sounds like good news.
I see no need for you to convert those VTS_01_1.VOB files into anything else.
    Here is my suggested plan...
    a. Download and install the free 30 day tryout of Premiere Elements 12 from Adobe
    b. Put your DVD disc in the DVD burner tray. Open Premiere Elements 12 to the Expert workspace.
Click on File Menu/New/Export and set the project preset for NTSC DV Standard or Widescreen (depending on whether
your files are for standard 4:3 or widescreen 16:9)...do not forget the check mark next to "Force Selected Project Setting on
    This Project".
    c. Then back in the Expert workspace, use Add Media/"DVD Camera or Computer Drive"/Video Importer. In the Video Importer,
put a check mark next to your VTS_01_1.VOB, a check mark next to Add to Timeline, and designate at Save In location. Then click
Get Media to put the file in Project Assets and on the Timeline.
    d. Then we can gauge the situation.
Again, if possible, do not purchase the program until you have work through the tryout in order determine if Premiere Elements 12 work for your video editing/export goals and is compatible with your computer environment.
We will be watching for further developments.
    ATR
Add On...If any problems (I do not expect any) with Add Media/DVD Camera or Computer Drive), we might consider Add Media/Files and Folders/ and navigate to the VTS_01_1.VOB.

  • Importing analog video intoMac mini or MacBookPro

I have a VHS-C camcorder &  a Hi-8 camcorder. I also have VHS tapes. I have a VHS-C to VHS adapter. I think that the Hi-8 has S-video out. So I'd need something external that will convert an analog signal into a digital signal. I want to import the videos into my computer & edit them. I have a VHS to DVD burner but it is in a separate room. Is there any hardware that will convert analog video tapes into digital video that I can hook up to my mini or MBP & import the videos so that I can edit them? Is the equipment reasonably priced?

You may find that, importing the VHS tapes directlly into the Mac Mini is easier because it's lacks a SuperDrive.
I have a SuperDrive. There aren't that many connections on my mini. The Thunderbolt port is available as well as the Firewire port. The external hardware usually has a USB output. I don't know if any have a Thunderbolt or Firewire output. I suppose that I can get a USB to Thunderbolt adapter.
After I posted the message, it occured to me that I already know the answers to my questions. DUH! I need both the hardware to connect my camcorders to my mini or MBP plus I need the software. I've browsed around iMovie. I can import my videos & use it to edit my videos. I have a VHS to DVD burner in the living room. I can use the external hardware to connect my MBP to the VHS machine.

  • When converting analog video to digital to my macbook the audio desyncs halfway through. Any ideas?

I am trying to convert Analog video to digital to my Macbook for work, and every time I run it through my converter the audio De-syncs about halfway into the video. Does anyone know how to go about fixing this issue or have had similar issues to this? I have no issues when converting to my PC, but only my Mac. Thanks!

    Hi Rick,
I am extracting the material from the dvd directly using handbrake. The file that handbrake creates lands on the desktop. I then ammend the end of the filename from mp4 to m4v. Following this I click and drag the file onto the itunes icon in the dock. I can then download it to the ipod no problem. The dropouts occur no matter where I play the file. In other words, on the desktop (with QT), in the itunes library and on the pod.
I went back and looked at all the dvd's that are giving me this trouble. The culprit seems to be that the audio signal is in LPCM (linear pulse code modulation). Just for the **** of it, I tried to rip one track using handbrake changing the sampling rate of the audio to 48,000 Hz which I believe is what LPCM uses (previously I had set it at 41,000 Hz in handbrake). But no go, still has dropouts. One of these problem dvd's has a second audio option in AC3 (2ch). As a test, I ripped one song using that. Dropouts are gone. However, the audio is a director's commentary (on the music video he shot) with the music in the background, so it's not what I want.
Is there any way to convert LPCM to AC3? Or any other way to fix this dropout problem.
    Thanks,
    Pete

  • Analog Video Tapes

I have a MacBook Pro and I have 10 or so Analog video tapes i'd like either put on the hard drive or turn into DVD's. What's the best way to do this?

I do this all the time, only with old medical procedures on VHS tape. The best way I found was to buy EyeTV Hybrid or EyeTV Plus. Hybrid will copy the tape with the resulting digital format the same quality as the tape. EyeTV Plus will allow you to use Progressive Scan to enhance or improve the resulting VHS analog tape during the capture process.
Both are very easy to use. Connect your VCR via RCA cables or S-Video cable to either product and connect via USB to your Mac. Install the EyeTV software then turn on the tape, hit record on EyeTV and let it play. Once completed stop recording. You can then edit the tape quite easily using the EyeTV editing features then export the completed digital file into several formats: DV, AVI, MP4, MPG, MPEG, DiVX, WMV or DVD (using built-inToast).
Check eBay for a used or cheaper EyeTV product.

  • Qosmio G10: analog video signal capturing from Camcorder

    Please help
I am from Canada and new to this forum. I bought a Qosmio G10 early this year but only had a chance to try to use it to capture and convert my V8 home video tapes recently with no success.
I have tried the Toshiba Tech support with no hope. I have tried the registery patch for VinDVD creator 2, but still it is not seeing my video input stream from the camcorder. I tried both S-Video and Composite inputs with no result. Anybody with similar experience?
    I appreciate your help.
    Moe

    Help please?
    It's me again!
So far I've got the analog video stream captured only when using DVD Creator 2. But, I still have two more problems to solve. 1) When I stop recording onto DVD creator, always error message:"WinDVD Creator has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." is displayed, and restarting the program it cannot open the recorded clip saying "either the file is corrupt or a non-compatible file format" while Windows Media player can play it back. I cannot edit the recorded video clip as a result. 2) The second problem is that the video stream from S-Video of analog camcorder is played back OK, but once click the record on DVD creator, the video capturing starts to lag and looses smooth flow.
Any hint or comment is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Moe

  • Kaiser Baas Video to DVD Maker

Has anyone experienced with using Kaiser Baas Video to DVD Maker on a Mac? Is it possible to save the captured file in a format the iMovie will edit? If so, how is this done?

Yes - capture analog movies, and it converts it to DVD format. The problem is, it will not allow you to edit it before burning the DVD. It saves it as an "Empia Movie", and iMovie will not open it. Empia is the software Kaiser Bass bundles with the gadget, to use with a Mac.
