Analysis of DV vs. Component Beta-SP on 10-bit timeline

Alright, this may not be the most scentific experiment, but last week I started using a Blackmagic decklink extreme PCIe card with a new G5 dual 2G and FCP5. Importing Beta-SP. Had been accustomed to bumping Beta-SP to DV and working completely within DV 8-bit for finishing. The 10-bit functionality is truly exciting.
Anyway, as a test, I dubbed a length of Beta tape to DV via S-video. Then imported it to FCP va DV codec. Then dig'd the same piece of tape to Decklink as a Beta-SP component signal, 8-bit blackmagic codec. Considered 10-bit capture test, but from everything I've read, Beta-SP maxes out at 8-bit.
Put both piece of vido on 10-bit timeline and color-corrected both to closely resemble one another. Monitoring on a 13" Panasonic monitor out of Decklink card (composite out).
Judgement: the image (an interview) looks no better from the Beta-SP capture. If anything, DV looks "better". I can't say why. It's very strange. Must have something to do with monitoring in composite "filtration".
Thoughts?

Beta SP>via S video to DV = compression
BetaSP>component out to 8 or 10 bit uncompressed = uncompressed video
I suggest that if you have DV footage you should use a DV sequence setting
If you can load component, use a sequence that matches your compression setting. 8bit load = 8 bit seq...10 bit load = 10 bit seq. If not you will be rendering all the time for no real benefit.
With a 13" monitor it would be hard to tell the difference.
Final notes....Put your s cables away and forget that they even exist.
Load dv footage via firewire..betaSP via component
Purchase a larger broadcast monitor

    Hi,
I need to register a 32 bit delphi component on windows 7 64 bit machine as part of migration of my aplication from windows XP to win 7. After i register the necesary dll's and then run the DCOM exe or try reistering it from running DCOMexe\regserver.. I
am not able to find it under DCOMcnfg.
I also ran the dcomcnfg from syswow64 folder but still not able to see the DCOM exe under Dcomcnfg.
Please help me out how to register the dcom exe in win 7.
    Thanks iun advance

    Hi,
Do you mean to enable DCOM on Windows 7?
If yes, please take a look at the following article, take a try to enable DCOM:
    Enable or Disable DCOM
And please note: Component Services is no longer in Administrative Tools. To open Component Services, click
Start. In the search box, type dcomcnfg, and then press ENTER.
    Hope this may help

  • No 64-bit long ints in LabVIEW 7? [Also: beta version of 64-bit LabVIEW?]

Is there no primitive data type in LabVIEW 7 that corresponds to a 64-bit long int? [I guess LabVIEW would call it either I64 or U64...]
Please, please tell me I'm wrong - if I'm right, this is an unacceptable state of affairs.
And, if I'm right - when will LabVIEW be upgraded to 64-bit-ness? Is there a beta version of 64-bit LabVIEW out there that I could get involved with? [I'd really, really like a 'for' loop that could take 64-bit ints as its counters.]
    Anyone know anything about this?
    Thanks!

There is no native support for 64 bit ints. I don't expect to see that until Windows has support for 64 bits. For work arounds, see this posting.

Video is the magic word for fast CPUs, large screens, maximum RAM and large HHDs.  Ditto what eww says and do not order RAM and HDD upgrades through Apple.  It is much, much less expensive through third party vendors.
    Ciao.

  • SAP Business Objects Analysis for Office 1.4 on Microfost Office 64-Bit Version

    Hello,
Has anyone installed SAP Business Objects Analysis for Office 1.4 SP6 on Microsoft Office (Excel) 64-Bit Version. I am getting message "The launcher was not able to connect Analysis Add-In. Make sure that Analysis Add-In is not disabled by Office Application".
When I activated the Analysis Add-In, I am getting below Error: "Excel experienced a serious problem with the 'analysis' add-in." and it is forcing to disable the add-in and asking to check for if any update is available. It was working fine on 32-bit Excel version.
    Thanks,

    Hi Tammy,
Thanks for the response. It is working fine on 32-bit Office version (with OS 64-bit). I checked the compatibility (OSS 1466118 ) and it supports Microsoft 64-bit office version. Just wanted to see if anyone had successful installation.

  • When shooting source images for "HDR Pro", is it better to using 16 bit TIFF rather than 8 bit JPEG?

When shooting source images for "HDR Pro", is it better to using 16bit TIFF rather than 8 bit JPEG?

Yes, you will bracket the exposure.
Take as many shots as you need. Take a normal shot, underexpose twice or even three times and then overexpose twice or three times.
That's how the camera will register all teh details in the image - in the highlights, in the shadows and in the midtones. When you bracket, remember to change shutter speed (if you shoot manual, that's what I do), not the aperture because you will end up with different depth of field.

  • Is Exporting "None" Compression better than "Uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2"?

i am trying to finish my first HD project on FCP. it's a stop-motion film which uses sequences of large jpgs (image size3504 x 2336). I have used the scaling feature in FCP to scale the image to fit into a 1920 x 1080 framing.
when my sequence settings are "Uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2", and i export a quicktime with "Uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2" compression, i get slight blockiness around some of my edges (near pinks, reds, oranges) that do not appear in the original jpegs. I thought "Uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 meant i was going to get the best image possible, thats what a professional post facility told me to use.
In experimenting, When i Choose "None" Compression for my sequence settings, and i exported the quicktime as "None" Compression, the image is much better and does not have the above blockiness.
    Does this make sense?
Is there an aliasing problem with Uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2?
Why does it say "Quality:Medium" when exporting Uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 but not give me the option to change that?
If i have to supply a master quicktime for an HD screening, can it be in "None" compression?
answers to any of these questions would be much appreciated.
    thanks again,
    aj

I'm sure someone who has more experience with codecs will be along soon, but I'll take a crack at it for now.
Using the None option, you're outputting 4:4:4 video, which means there's no color downsampling. When using Uncompressed 4:2:2 the codec is only capable of producing half the color samples of 4:4:4.
Depending on what your source files were originally sampled it, this could explain why you're seeing the degredation. Only very high end videos cameras capture 4:4:4, however. I'm assuming you used a still camera, and I really couldn't tell you what the color sampling is likely to be.
But in most regards, Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 should be extremely high quality. There's an excellent site for comparing codecs here:
http://codecs.onerivermedia.com/ which does report some slight anti-aliasing issues.
Hopefully someone else can offer a solution.

  • Digi-beta capture - uncompressed 10-bit or prores hq

starting a project that was shot on digi-beta many moons ago. editing on fcp 7. i'm asumming given the difference in the data rate between uncompressed 10-bit & prores hq that there "must" be some compression loss, but is it enough to make it worthwhile capturing in uncompressed 10-bit. obviously prores hq file sizes are much smaller so that shoud make editing easier. i do want to maintain highest quality possible. final product is dvd & digital download. thanks for any advice.

The ProRes envelope is 10-bit, so you're covered on the biggest difference between digi-beta and all the pedestrian standard def formats. "Normal" ProRes 422 is 42 Mbit/s for SD at 29.97, HQ is 63 Mbit/s. Either should serve well.

  • Lightroom 4.0 beta performance Windows 32 bit

Yes, I realize I don't have the best system.  I don't need a lecture, I have what I have.  But I hope performance can be improved a little bit.  Lightroom 3.6 performs reasonably well.  But some features in Lightroom 4.0 beta don't do so well.  For instance, I imported about 170 raw images last night, and it took well over 30 minutes for Lightroom to build the 1:1 previews.
    Windows 7
    32 bit
    4 GB ram
    Dual core processor, 3 GHz
Our IT guy here at work recommended and sold me this system a couple of years ago.  Said I didn't "need" 64 bit.  I'd like to shoot him now.  Live and learn, I guess.

    Jim,
LOL. And Bill Gates thought 640K was enough memory for anybody, they say.
That's about the performance I got on my LR3.6 under Windows XP, maybe a little faster. I was averaging about 12-13 seconds per 12MB raw. Lightroom is like most apps: every release, it is designed to do more and needs faster hardware to maintain the same performance. Everybody wants performance to get better with a new release, but it typically goes the other direction.

  • I was on a promotion from online but was called with a better deal that just bit me... why is this?

I was on a promotion and was not happy but OK with the service.I was also to get a $250 gift card but a month later, I get a call from customer service stating they have a better deal. The rep stated I would be paying less than $100 every month! To confirm I asked the rep multiple times and she stated that it is for every month moving forward.I agreed to this. A month later....I am paying $120+ a month.... I called up today and the rep stated the rep I talked to before noted only 1 month for the price.... Now I have to pay more than I was paying before and I won't get my gift card. Seems like it was planned. And the rep I talked to today can say is you are getting a good deal.... while I am feeling very very cheated.

but the price sky rockets if I do not use any promotion.Only reason I stay with them is because my apartment only carry ATT services.

  • Better compression at lower bit rates

I've not had much luck getting good h.264 compression from AME at lower bit rates. Are there some secrets that someone has shared? I used to be quite adept back in the day, so it's frustrating having to upload giant files to Vimeo. Any good guidance?
I should be more specific. It seem like close to 5 Mbps is need for full HD, but I remember Flash expert Fabio getting great results in less than 1:
    http://sonnati.wordpress.com/
It would be great if AME had some addition controls.

Actually, you cannot hear the difference when the background noise is loud, or example, public transport. I suggest that one uses a noise cancellation headset. $$$

  • Fail over possible for 9i db, using Veritas VCS bet 32bit and 64 bit

    Folks,
We are planning to use 9i R2 (9.2.0.2.0) on
Sun Solaris, using Veritas VCS .
Can we have one OS as Solaris 32 bit and
the fail over box as Solaris 64 bit.
    Thanks
    Ashish

    Follow up question -
I am able to successfully fail over the ABAP portion of the ABAP+J2EE environment we have.  This is done by altering the profile parameters in the DEFAULT profile to reflect the cluster alias rather than the actual host name.
But in the confitool of the J2EE, there are some fields that have the actual hostname hardcoded.  These are in the DB, so they are host independent:
    Global Disp. config>managers>ClusterManger:
    ms.host = <host>
    Global Disp. config>managers>LockingManger:
    enq.profile.filename = /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/profile/<SID>_DVEBMGS##_host
    enqu.host = <host>
    Global Server Config>managers>Cluster Manager:
    ms.host = <host>
    Global Server Config>managers>Locking Manager:
    enq.profile.filename = /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/profile/<SID>_DVEBMGS##_host
    enqu.host = <host>
I suspect I can change the physical host names to the alias, but how can the J2EE know which profile to look at based on what physical host it's running on?  ABAP knows by just reading the profile that has the real host name in it.

  • Transient analysis frequency estimate

    Hi,
I have a simple analog tone generator that produces a sine wave after some short startup delay.  Is there a function in Multisim that would allow me to take my transient analysis data and estimate the frequency of oscillation?  What I'm looking for is similar to the frequency counter available in the runtime tools.
Specifically, I need to generate a table of results from a Monte carlo transient analysis.  Currently, I'm forced to export the 200 or so MC time series and perform an FFT in MATLAB on each series.
I'm not looking for a monte carlo Fourier analysis, because I need much better resolution than this tool provides.  Is there something I can do with the post processor to extract a frequency estimate?
    -J

    Hi Jay,
In Multisim, you can use the probe or frequency counter to read signal frequency, but once you use any of the analysis such as transient, the option to find frequency is not available.
What you can do is use LabVIEW to control Multisim and there is a pre-built function available that can calculate a signal frequency.  To make this work, you need LabVIEW and the LabVIEW Multisim API Toolkit which can be downloaded from the links below:
    https://lumen.ni.com/nicif/us/evalmultisimtlkt/content.xhtml
    https://lumen.ni.com/nicif/us/evaltlktembdes/content.xhtml
Once you install the required software, in LabVIEW you can create a VI (a program) to launch Multisim, run a circuit 200 times and each time change component values and calculate the output frequency for each run.
Attached is a sample circuit and the VI I created.  Double click on the Reading Signal Frequency.vi file, click on the folder in the front panel (the screen with the grey background) and select and select the Multisim circuit which is attached.  In this program, I am changing a resistor R1 in the Multisim circuit and run the simulation 10 times, once finished, the result will appear in the array in the front panel.
You can use this example and modify the VI for your circuit.

  • How can I use two different PC's with Lr5.5 to manage and process my photos stored on external disk, and exchange the analysis between these two computers?

I operate on two computers and would like to be able download  Lr jobs done on my laptop,  to my stationary PC, also used to process other images, all stored on the same external disk.
In other words I want to process may photos on two PCs and to to have access to all analyses from one or even better from both computers independently.
    Samek.

You need to put your photos AND LR catalog file (.lrcat) on the external drive, and make sure the external drive has the same device name or drive letter on both computers.
I have been using LR this way for several years and it works fine as long as you MAKE A BACKUP of the external disk somewhere, in case you lose or drop/damage the external drive which is easy to do.  Nightly, or sometimes more than once a day, I copy all changes from my working external disk to another similar-sized external disk.  I have lost a disk, once, and dropped/destroyed a disk, once, but recovery is as easy as using what used to be the backup disk as the primary one, and buying a new disk for the backup device.  It does take some hours to copy the 1TB of photos to the new backup disk, but once that is done, it usually only takes a few 10s of minutes or less to copy what is new or changed each night.
