Anamorphic Distress: PLEASE HELP!
I have pretty much tried everything at this point. There have been a lot of posts about this topic, and even after reading through the manual I still can't seem to get it right.
Basically, I have two types of footage in a project that will be made into a dvd. 16:9 HD1080i60 shot on a Sony HDR-HC1, and 4:3 footage shot on Beta.
At this point I understand I have two choices to set up and edit the footage.
1) go the DV-NTSC route (720x480) and I think this looks fine, except it makes the widescreen footage appear less prominent when it is "inter-cut" with 4:3 footage.
2) go the DV-NTSC route which looks great in the canvas but when it is exported it looks distored. Ideally I would like the 16:9 footage to take up the whole screen (ie no letterboxing) and have the 4:3 footage placed in the middle of the screen with two black lines on either side.
PLEASE HELP! any advice on how to set this up would be greatly appreciated.
To recap:
In the browser you have footage which is formatted 16:9 and 4:3. You want to put this footage into a sequence that is in 16:9 (anamorphic).
This should not be a problem. The 16:9 footage will fill the screen and the 4:3 footage will be centered with a bar left and right.
Things to check if not working:
The sequence setting - Double click the sequence in the browser to open it and open the sequence setting to check you are in DV-NTSC ANAMORPHIC (press apple & 0 then load sequence settings).
Clip Settings - Right click each clip and select 'item properties'. The 16:9 clips should have a tick beside the Anamorphic option and the 4:3 clips should not (you can click in the column to the right to tick and untick even though there is no obvious tickbox).
If you have changed the sequence preset with clips on the timeline a distion may have been applied to some of them, select the clips that are distorted and try removing the applied attributes (right click over clip, select remove attributes - distortion).
If all the above works fine you then only have the problem that when you export it as a quicktime, it will look wrong (stretched)! This is not a problem with your project but a quicktime issue. The Aspect is not passed to quicktime so it displays it incorrectly. You can fix this by altering the current size setting in the Movie properties - video track - Visual settings dialogue with preserve aspect ratio unticked. But if you are going to compress the clip for a dvd, simply choose an anamorphic setting and your software (Compressor or whatever) will compress it correctly.

I successfully imported 2 photo shoots from my camera.
Once imported, as always, I saved the photos onto my external hard drive.
Normally I would also keep the images on my camera until I have finished the job and handed the finished product to the customer although on this occasion I had to delete them due to an extensive shoot and the need for space.
Last night I was hoping to start editing the shots so opened up my hard drive to find the 2 folders there but both were empty! I then opened up Iphoto and I can't locate them anywhere. My library only seems to date back to July. Could this mean my Iphoto is full so has not saved the images and they are now lost forever???
I've checked all my trash cans etc to ensure they haven't been accidentally deleted and they haven't.
Please help?!?!?!

Damsel in utter distress! xThere are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have. -
PLEASE help with 24p editing mixed with 29.97
Hello--I am a newbie to all of this 24p editing. I shot a zombie movie last summer and have a MESS with the footage. Half was shot in 24p advanced mode on the Panasonic AGDVX100a with a 16:9 anamorphic lens, and half shot at 4:3, 29.97 with a Sony DVX2100.
I realize I need to "conform all of this footage".
Can I stay on a 29.97 timeline? I heard that dropping 24p adv footage onto a 29.97 timeline results in a "jittery" picture once output to TV.
Should I edit on a 24p timeline, and convert the 29.97 footage?
It seems that when I drop my 24p advanced footage into Premiere (CS4), on a 24p timeline--the fouth frame is identical to the fifth. Does this mean that pulldown removal is not happening correctly? How do I fix this?
Even if I do figure out how to edit on a 24p timeline, when I do my final render, what should my output file be? should I try a 24p DVD?
Also...This is an EFFECTS HEAVY film. So I need to do an edit in Premier, then render it and bring it into After Effects, do the effects, and do another render...then I will take that render back into Premier. Will this work? What render setting should I use? How will the pulldown be affected, if at all?

Your HDR-CX550V records HD as MPEG4 AVC/H.264; and SD as MPEG2-PS. It appears to be an AVCHD camcorder (at least for HD video).
Storing your +original footage+ could be done at least two ways:
1 - record to removable flash media and save the Memory Sticks as your originals, as you formerly saved your tapes. (If I did my math correctly, you could fit up to about 6.5 hrs. HD video on a 16GB memory stick depending on the recording mode you select.)
2 - copy the +entire directory structure+ from the flash media to a hard drive; this is important, you need the entire directory & files from the root folder on down, not just the AVCHD folder or just the .mts files. Test this before committing to it as your archiving method.
The third way (and what I would probably do myself):
3 - Log & Transfer into FCE and then archive the resulting QuickTime .mov files to a hard drive. (Admittedly, this is technically not the 'original' footage because it has been transcoded to Apple Intermediate Codec; however the quality is excellent and should be almost indistinguishable from the original AVCHD video.)
If you convert the video files yourself (you mentioned iSkysoft), you need to convert to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec to use the video in FCE.
FCP can handle 5.1 audio however the state of the art of these camcorders does not lend itself to direct import or conversion from the camcorder. Even the pros need dedicated 5.1 audio hardware. Frankly, 5.1 audio on these consumer camcorders is more a marketing gimmick than something actually useful at present.
The filenames 00001.MTS, 00002.MTS etc. are assigned by your camcorder and there is nothing you can do to change that. (Although you could rename the QT .mov files after you Log & Transfer from your camcorder).

'Preparing data for exporting' takes forever (Urgent, please help)

I'm currrently editing a 1920x800 anamorphic Full HD project on Premiere Pro CS5. The original full HD clips were replaced with AE-comps using Dynamic link for color grading. The project is 15 minutes long and mainly consists of linked AE-comps. The sound is filled with gunshot sound effects, music and original recorded audio. That audio is also linked with Soundbooth for some postwork.
Here's the problem: when i hit the 'Export' on Premiere pro I get the window, i choose my settings (H.264 10 mbps) and then when I hit the 'Qeue' button it shows the progress bar 'Preparing data for export' and Media Encoder starts up normally. The problem is nothing happens afterwards. The project doesn't get loaded in AME and the progress bar keeps on telling forever that it's 'preparing data for export' Normally this process only takes up a minute or 2 max. How can i fix this?
Editing rig:
27 inch imac
4 gigs ram
2.53 i5 processor
ATI 4850

1. Can you try exporting directly from inside Premiere, instead of adding to AME from PR?
- press the Export button inside the Export Settings Dialog, not the Queue button
2. Can you import the sequence directly into AME?
- launch AME, File menu\Add Premiere Pro Sequence
3. Try using a different format other than, H.264.
4. Try using PR CS5.5. You can download the trial version and use it for 30 days.

Standard widescreen sequence settings - PLEASE HELP!

I've been trying for weeks to figure out the proper sequence settings / easy setup settings for videos that will ulitimately end up as STANDARD 16x9 footage.
Is there a direct 16 x 9 standard widescreen setting?
What I've been trying to do is to make a standard widescreen picture video slideshow that will end up being burned via idvd. But for the life of me I cant figure it out?!?!?

I do have Fianl Cut Studio Pro 2 studio."Standard" 16:9 is anamorphic.
Import your footage into FCP using a 16:9 preset, edit it and export it using 'current settings'.
Open up DVD Studio Pro and import the footage making sure to check the box that tells the program the material is 16:9.

We shot our project using an XL2, 24p 16:9.
I digitized the show into FCP 5 at 16:9. My sequence presets are 16:9.
I placed a 2:35 matte on it using the "widescreen matte" feature in FCP. When I fullscreen play WITHIN FCP it looks great! Left and right edges go all the way to the sides of my 17" macbook pro's screen. When I export to compressor using anamorphic h264, it squishes the sides in. When I export (using sequence settings) a quicktime to the desktop and then open using quick time i get the same results, squished sides (stuff looks tall and skinny). If I open that same file up in FCP by simply double clicking it, it looks great when I fullscreen it.
What am I doing wrong? Please help. I have to have this in fedex first thing in the morning
oh ps- I'll be outputting to DVD for play on normal 4:3 tv's eventually
macbook pro 17" Mac OS X (10.4.8)Your material is anamorphic. When you display it with square pixels, it looks squished.
To get the proper aspect ratio, type in the appropriate numbers in Compressor. Say you wanted it to be 640 wide, (640 x 9) / 16 = 360, so put 360 for your height.

This is driving me crazy. I can't figure it out.
I submit a job, I get the message "unknown time remaining" with no progress in the progress bar. Nothing happens.
I am using an iMac.

Movie is exported to my desktop from FCP as a Quicktime file. I am using current settings. Audio and video included. Self contained. DV NTSC 48KHz Anamorphic 720x480
The setting I choose is H.264 800Kbps Quicktime 7 compatible. In the inspector under geometry I choose custom (16:9). Destination is desktop.
When I submit, it shows in history but never does anything. Just get that message.
Please help!Do you know what else I could use to compress? I'm about to google.

PLEASE HELP! I've come to a complete STOP! GRADE ENTIRE PROJECT
Please help.. I've not really used COLOR before in any serious situation, But heres my situation. I've completed my movie project in FCP, it has some 200 edits, is about 1 hour long and is DV PAL Anamorphic.
All i want to do is run the entire edited project through COLOR (im wanting to de-interlace and add a film-look to it in the FX tab).
I notice on a test run that COLOR put every clip into a separate folder.. so how does one assemble all of these clips from these folders in FCP? Its here that im totally lost! Basically put, How do i get the completed COLOR'd project out of COLOR?
I need to understand better the work-flow from FCP to COLOR and viceversa.

Firstly, im right now in the process of rendering the enitre timeline that I'd sent from FCP in COLOR. Therefore I have not tried getting the media out of COLOR yet. However, I did a quick test of just 3 clips and noticed how COLOR handled the output i.e. putting each clip into separate folders. Thus it begged my question, how do I manage this back in FCP? I was thinking that all these clips would just be slapped back into the Media Browser in FCP, leaving me with all my current rushes and untreated timeline. IT just seemed all a little confusing!
I did think of rendering out to a QT movie and doing as Ham suggested but I thought this may have an impact on the final quality as it adds another process (beit compression) to the movie, but Im not sure if that is the case?!
As previously mentioned, I have SENT TO Color from FCP, created the PRESET, then applied that preset to the entire TimeLine now in COLOR. It's taking like forver and probably have another couple of hours to wait before I see the result!
This is probably more a question on work-flow as COLOR is the one programs in FCS i know so little about! Still getting to grips with the rest of FCS!! lol

I got a new computer the other day and followed all the directions given on the apple support site to transfer my 1080 songs. When i connect the ipod to the new computer at the end, it gives me a popup that says
Would you like to make your ipod correspond with this library? (something like that)
and the apple site told me to say yes. Well all my songs got deleted. I tried a few times before hitting yes, hitting no, but nothing ever happened.

There are some programs that can try to recover your data, but I'm not sure of names.
You're going to have to reimport your music to your library.
Hitting "no" simply means the data on the iPod won't be overwritten with the data from the new iTunes library. -

Apple Mini DVI to Video Adapter is not working. Please Help...
I bought an Apple Mini DVI to Video Adapter to connect my Macbook to a TV using normal video cable. When I connect the cable, my Laptop DIsplay gives a flickr once and then it shows nothing. I checked Display in the system preference where I don't get a secondary monitor option. My TV is panasonic and it's an old one. I work on Final Cut Pro and it's very very important to see my videos on a TV. What am I doing wrong with the connection? Anyone Please Please help...
Your probably not doing anything wrong. There are thousands of users with Similar issues and it seems to be with many different adapters.
We have Mini DP to VGA (3 different brands) and they all fail most of the time. This seems more prevalent with LCD Projectors. I've tested some (50+) with VGA Monitor (HP) and they all worked, LCD Projector (Epson, Hitachi, and Sanyo) and they all fail, DLP Projector (Sanyo) and one worked.
My Apple Mini DP to DVi works most of the time. My Mini DP to HDMI (Generic non Apple) works every time.
The general consensus is that Apple broke something in the OS around 10.6.4 or 10.6.5 and its not yet fixed. As we are a school we have logged a case with the EDU Support group so will see what happens.

PSE icons instead of the photo. I need to view photos at a glance. Please help me????
Please help, this is driving me crazy. I have downloaded my free PSE #9, it came with my Leica Camera. I cannot view at a glance any of my photos. There is only an icon that reads, PSE. To view any of my photos, I must click select and then preview. This gets old, and I am doing 4 times the work. I am having to use the dates to guess where my photos might be. I hate this! My old Photo Shop #5 didn't do this. When you went to my pictures, you could see every photo.
I have tried the right click and open as any program. What ever program I choose, that is the icon that appears. No photo. Still no good.

Are you using Windows Explorer to view the files?
If so, load Explorer, go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options.
Click on the View tab and make sure the first option (Always show icons, never thumbnails) is not checked.
Click on OK and see if that is any better.
