Anamorphic Sequence to Widescreen DVD

I having been working on a quick three minute project in FCE 3.0. It was captured in hdv, then after it was edited, I placed it into a DV Anamorphic sequence and rendered it. However when I export the anamorphic sequence as a quicktime movie to burn in idvd 6, it shows up as 4:3 and it has not been letterboxed. I have searched the forum and I'm still not able to figure out what to do to get my anamorphic sequence to be a letterboxed 4:3 video when it goes onto a dvd. I've read about the anamorphicizer but I do not have quicktime pro. Is there another way to do this?
Edit: I have tried just exporting the AIC HDV sequence as a quicktime movie and it works fine, but I'm not sure if thats the right way to do it since I've read alot about putting it into a dv sequence and then exporting that.

Great solution available for free called Anamorphicizer. Sorry, don't have an address, but google can find it.
You simply drop your movie file onto the anamorphicizer icon and it creates a letterbox version that iDVD will respect and display properly.

  • What are the ideal specs for a DigiBeta master tape when authoring a "widescreen anamorphic" 16:9 SD DVD (original aspect ratio is 14:9)?

I just received the masters for a new SD DVD. I would like to author a "widescreen anamorphic" SD DVD horizontally squeezed widescreen image stored in a standard 4:3 aspect ratio DVD image frame. (On 4:3 displays, mattes should preserve the original aspect ratio. On 16:9 displays the image will fill the screen at the highest possible resolution.)
Below I've listed the specs of the Digi Beta master tapes the producers have sent to me for digitizing. I'd like to know this: What are the ideal specs for a DigiBeta master tape when authoring a widescreen anamorphic SD DVD, using material with an original aspect ratio of 14:9?
I've also listed my guesses below. Please let me know if my guesses are right. If not, please suggest alternatives (and if possible explain why.)
    TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OF EXISTING MASTER:
    Tape: DigiBeta
    Original Aspect Ratio: 1.55 (14:9)
    Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
Pixel Aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
    Frame Size: 720 x 480
Anamorphic: Full-Height Anamorphic (16:9 image displayed in letterboxed, non-distored 4:3)
    Display Format: 4:3 Letterbox
MY GUESS AT IDEAL TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS (for a DigiBeta, that is):
    Tape: DigiBeta
    Original Aspect Ratio: 1.55 (14:9)
    Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
    Pixel Aspect: Square
    Frame Size: 720 x 540
    Anamorphic: YES
Display Format: 16:9 Anamorphic (horizontally squeezed widescreen image)
Please feel free to ask for clarification or further information you need to answer my question.
Thank you so much in advance for your help!
    Best, Noetical.
BTW, I can't wait for the day when everything has gone digital and we get digital intermediates instead of tapes to digitize!

Hi Nick...thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.

    NTSC pixels are never square.
NTSC is 720x486, even when it is Anamorphic.
You shouldn't be using an already letterboxed master to make an Anamorphic version. Get the master that was made before the letterboxing stage.
When you make an Anamorphic DVD it should display as 16:9 full screen automatically on widescreen TVs.
The same DVD will automatically letterbox on 4:3 TVs.
Um yeah...duh. That's exactly what I was trying to explain in the preface of my question. I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear...all these things you mention are the reasons I'm putting together a list of the technical specs of the DigiBeta I need so I can have them send that instead of the stupid letterboxed version.
Look, I'm sending this request to some intern at their offices in England, asking for a master with which I can make an Anamorphic DVD. They already sent me this master, which as you and I both agree is an idiotic asset to use for these purposes. As such, I was hoping for advice on a more precise way of requesting the master that I need than asking for "the master that was made before the letterboxing stage." Upon reflection, perhaps I'll just do that. If you or anyone else has a suggestion about something I should add to my request that would improve the odds of them sending the tape I need, please repond. Thank you!
BTW, It's been a long time since anyone has responded to something I've written or said as though I'm an idiot. I remember now that I don't really like it. (Moving along...)

  • Creating anamorphic widescreen dvds

Does iDVD (in combination with iMovie) now produce anamorphic widescreen DVDs from a 16:9 camcorder source?
I'm currently using iLife '05, and the DVDs it produces are not anamorphic widescreen, which means when I play them back on DVD Player, they have a 2" border on all sides of the screen.

    Andrew,
You are talking about two different issues with iLife 05 - Importing anamorphic video into iMovie HD (in iLife 05) and then burning anamorphic 16:9 DVDs with iDVD.
Many 16:9 cameras work great with iMovieHD. I even created anamorphic 16:9 DV files with both iPhoto and PhotoToMovie that also worked great with iMovieHD (05). However, some cameras do have the pillarboxing issues you pointed out and Matti referenced. I do not know whether or not this was fixed for your camcorder for iLife06.
The second issue iLife05 has is how it creates 16:9 anamorphic video in iDVD5. Actaully this does work correctly! It's only the conversion of the anamorphic 16:9 to letterboxed 4:3 for 4:3 TV's that is an issue. If you take a "good" 16:9 anamorphic movie in iMovie and transfer it to iDVD5, it does encode as anamorphic - it just doesn't set the flag right for display on 4:3 TVs.....they are full screen 16:9 anamorphic DV for 16:9 displays, and play correctly on my 16:9 plasma TV at the normal WS setting with no distortion, just like commercial WS DVDs. If this were not an anamorphic signal, I would have to use the "zoom" setting, which is how I view letterboxed cable shows. If you read David Althoff's site carefully, you will note that iDVD5 can use 16:9 encoding, but the playback flag is not forced to letterbox it for 4:3 displays.
Now I'm not saying that you haven't had the issue of getting 4:3 encoding....and your 2 inch border does suggest that! I think your main problem is the import of the movie into iMovie in the first place is creating 4:3 video, and once you've got that, iDVD isn't going to fix it.
You need to make sure that your start a 16:9 WS DV project, and then import your video with the preferences "unchecked" as Matti suggests.
And what kind of camera do you have???

  • Getting a widescreen DVD from my footage - ARG!

Okay, I am trying to take 720p video and create a standard definition widescreen dvd.
In FCP2, I have the setup as DVCPRO HD - 720p30 , and I can edit and see the sequence in widescreen without any problems in the Canvas.
PROBLEM: When I try to export through Compressor and use any Apple preset for creating a DVD, the image looks "squished" and made to fit inside a 720x480 frame, thus looking rather ridiculous.
What am I doing wrong?? Help!

If you don't want it to be anamorphic, you need to specify the width and height of the output (in pixels). Otherwise, for some reason I'm not familiar with, Compressor likes to anamorphic-ize 16x9 footage. In fact, I usually give up with DVDSP and end up using iDVD to create the DVDs since it seems to be more forgiving with the video size, whereas DVDSP seems to like to check the Anamorphic box.

  • NTSC & PAL Widescreen DVD from Flash Animation

Hey Everyone. I have a question regarding a project I am finishing up. I created an animation in flash that is being exported to both NTSC Widescreen DVD and PAL Widescreen DVD.
I started with 1024x576 in flash and created a sweet animation with audio. (Its a 1 min animation that will be looped for conventions etc)
    For NTSC
From Flash I exported a 853x480 animation and imported it into FCP to add some fades to the beginning and end and make a few tweaks. I exported out another 853x480 video and imported it into DVDSP set to NTSC Widescreen. I burned the disc and everything looks great on my screen (letterbox on my crappy home tv)
For my PAL version I followed a similar process.
From Flash I exported a 1024x576 animation and imported it into FCP to add some fades to the beginning and end and make a few tweaks. I exported out another 1024x576 video and imported it into DVDSP set to PAL Widescreen.
The thing I noticed is that the video in the viewer seems stretched where as the NTSC looked perfect.
Am I missing something here? Where did I go wrong. Should i have set the video size smaller in FCP and outputted the proper video size (NTSC 720 x 480 and PAL 720 x 576) to bring into DVDSP? I don't know why one would look ok and the other would look stretched.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
    Fish

    Fish:
    Try this in FCP:
    PAL VIDEO
    - Select Easy Setup DV PAL
    - Create a new sequence and open it
    - Go to menu Sequence > Settings...
    - Change Quicktime Video Settings Compressor from DV-PAL to uncompressed 8 bit
    - Check the anamorphic option
    - Import your movie and make it fit the canvas (check the Distort option in the Motion tab)
    - Do your edit
    - Export your timeline as Animation.
Same for the NTSC but using DV NTSC Easy Setup and so . . .
If I don't missed something your movies must be fine in DVDSP.
    Hope it helps!

  • How can I get an anamorph movie to widescreen in IDVD

    Hi, I NEED URGENT HELP!
A friend of mine and I cut and created a movie on his PC with Premiere Pro 2.0. Now I need to create a high quality dvd from it but I can't get the anamorph data to play in widescreen on my IMac. neither in I Movie nor in IDVD. I tried and burned DVDs in both formats 4:3 and 16:9 but both times the film didn't convert to widescreen and on top the movies looked bad- really bad quality, even though the orignal data my friend gave me, is very high quality film resolution.
What do I need to do to convert the xxx.mov anamorph (16:9) into a widescreen IDVD?
My friend says the original material is: Mini DV, PAL 720x576 Pixel, anamorph (16:9)
Or in what form/size do I need the movies/data from him to make sure I can burn a widescreen dvd with it?
    Please help!

I am not sure about SWF support in Acrobat 8.x, however, if it is supported, you will have to add it to the PDF after the PDF has been created.  You can leave the space for it in your FrameMaker document and add it via the Mulimedia Tool.
I do know that SWF is fully supported in Acrobat 9.x, but in this case you will also have to add the SWF to the PDF after converting the FrameMaker document.  To do this, marquee and area on the PDF using the Flash Tool; Tools > Multimedia > Flash Tool.  You can also simply double click on the PDF with the Flash Tool.  Support for SWF, and several other multimedia file types is much stronger in Acrobat 9.

  • Copy and paste clips to anamorphic sequence...having trouble

I captured all my broll DV/DVCPRO NTSC Anamorphic. I started editing on a sequence that was not checked for anamorphic under Sequence Settings.
In order to fix this, I created a new sequence with the anamorphic box checked and copied all of my edits from the previous sequence. Now it seems like the anamorphic has been applied twice, like it seems widescreen twice over.
I was wondering if it were possible to copy my edits from the wrong sequence and paste them into the sequence with right settings, while keeping the correct anamorphic view. If not, then it seems I would have to redo all my edits on the correct sequence.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

Jeff, when you copied and pasted your edits then those clips retained all previously applied settings, filters etc, including those distortions automatically applied by FCP that made your anamorphic clips display properly in the older non-anamorphic sequence .. what you need to do is to remove those distortions:
Select all the clips in the new timeline (Cmd-A) then invoke the Remove Attributes dialog (Cmd-Opt-V) and put a tick in the Distort checkbox, then click OK.
That should do it ... although if you did any intentional distortions then those will have to be redone as they will be removed along with the automatic anamorphic distortion.
    Cheers

  • Using both "True Widescreen" and letterboxed 4:3 to create a widescreen dvd

Hi! Please can you help me with some widescreen problems?
I recently filmed a stage play with two cameras - one recording in 16:9 "True Widescreen" and the other (an older camera) filming in a "false" widescreen: letterboxed 4:3.
On top of this the camera I'm using that has a firewire connection to the Apple is the older camera that plays back the "True Widescreen" tape squeezed.
How can I capture both of these tapes and export them as a widescreen DVD? - it doesn't matter if there is some loss of quality through resizing (The way I did it before on a much cheaper editing system was to import both as they were and then resize the height of the squeezed true-widescreen back to the same shape as the letterbox widescreen).

You need to do it the other way - you need to stretch the letterboxed footage's height to the True Widescreen's dimension, which btw is refered to as Anamorphic. Then you need to tell the system that it is anamorphic footage (there's a checkbox for this in the properties window).
After you cut it together, export it and tell DVDSP that the footage is Anamorphic and it will set it up to play back widescreen in widescreen capable TVs and it will letterbox it for the less capable out there...

  • Creating a PAL Widescreen DVD from NTSC footage.

First off, my iDVD is version 7.0.4
If someone could help me out with a very precise workflow it would be great, because I have a project with a one day turn around and the DVDs have to play properly the next day.
This is the (sparse) information I got from the company that needs the DVDs : "As long as the DVD is UK pal widescreen it will play on the monitors."
In the past, if shooting in NTSC and transferring to PAL, I've had the DVDs professionally transferred. With this project, I won't have time to do that.
I'm planning on shooting on a DVX100 and editing in FCP. If shooting in NTSC is going to cause problems, I can definitely rent a PAL camera instead. (And would prefer to do that than have to do too much in post to get to a PAL Widescreen DVD)
Can you let me know what sequence settings I should use (for both the NTSC possibility and the PAL possibility) in FCP, and then exactly how to set up the DVD in iDVD? I know this is a super basic question- thanks in advance for your help.
Please note: I need the most reliable, quick workflow- would rather spend some money on renting a PAL camera if that's a more reliable method than transferring footage.

Thanks for the response! I just learned about an additional problem, unfortunately...
The client has OTHER footage that was already shot in NTSC that they need edited into the project. So I pretty much have to shoot in NTSC. However, there is the additional option of uploading the final clip to a server instead of burnind DVDs... any advice? Can I use MPEG Streamclip to create Pal files (let's say quality doesn't have to matter as much...)

  • Widescreen dvd playback

I've been having problems playing widescreen dvds in the 'anamorphic' format. How do you set dvd player to de-squeeze them? Surely you don't have to set the zoom manually?

Check that you are also viewing the DVD at Maximum Size (Command-3) as well as Full Screen (Command-0). While going into full screen should imply maximum size it sometimes does not. Also, some iillegal DVD copies and those made from DVD players sometime do not ever go into full screen.

  • Exporting anamorphic sequence to Quicktime

I'm trying to export an anamorphic sequence to Quicktime to post online. As I understand it, Quicktime doesn't acknowledge the anamorphic flag on a video file, but I came across a workaround in this article ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75079 ) which suggests altering the video size upon exporting.
Problem is, when I follow the recommended procedure, the QT player window actually IS widescreen, but the video inside is not, making it pillarboxed (black columns on left and right). So it's back to the drawing board. Anybody have any suggestions or success at doing what I'm trying to do?

Try a custom size of 360 x 202, 180 x 101 etc. Works well, so it all the time without pillarboxing occurring. This is what I have been doing for HDV 1080/60 items.
(FWIW when 16:9 video is encoded for 4:3 playback [ with letterbox settings from the player without adding anything to the video itself] the resulting MPEG is 720 x 404, so these numbers are based on the same ratio. )
If this way does not work, try doing this by opening the item in QT then following the same steps.

  • Anamorphic sequence question

Hi, I'm working with anamorphic footage in a project. If a sequence has been edited in a non-anamorphic sequence in the same project, is there a way to copy the edited footage to an anamorphic sequence without it coming in with added black bars?
    thanks very much.

When you copy the anamorphic material to the anamorphic sequence, the material should be fine. If there is any distortion, load the clip into the VIEWER and select the MOTION tab>DISTORTION and change the RATIO to 0 (zero)
    good luck.

  • Making Anamorphic Sequence in FCP Standalone QT Movie 16:9

Coupla ways. Open the file in QT and hit Apple-J... then with the top name (file name) selected... hit the Presentation TAB and check Conform Aperture to: CLEAN.
Or - IF you are using QT Conversion... use the OTHER tab after you set your quality to change SIZE to something that reflects 16:9 -- like 480x270.

  • How can I burn widescreen dvd's on iDVD

I've been editing videos on Final Cut Express for a couple of years now, I had three OneToOne subscriptions and my trainers have not been able to tell me how to burn a widescreen DVD on iDVD, our main suspition was that it was not in High Definition, but we both agreed there had to be a way. Every time even after choosing "widescreen" menus and settings it would burn with the two side curtains and the video disfigured. Anybody would say "just do widescreen on the TV set, but that didnot work, people in the video would not get the right shape. I tried it on more than four TV sets. Help please, I am tired of printing my videos back to tape (once edited) to recapture them on my PC to burn on Nero.

  • IDVD is producing a Widescreen DVD for Standard 4.3 footage

Folliowing on from my recent post, I am now using professional encoding setting to produce DVDs of old VHS family footage to DVD - all working great.
Using FCE4 to edit the footage and all ok until today. Doing exactly the same for about 20th time and the DVD working on now has been produced as a widescreen DVD - but the footage was shot before widescreen was thought of.
I've tried again and noticed in iDVD09 that when encoding assets (after DVD menu option is encoded) the video clip image then goes to a widescreen - and that's when I now stop it as don't want any more coasters!!.
Also the widescreen settings are on standard etc in iDVD and the footage as a .mov file opens in QT as standard screen.
Is there anything obvious I am doing wrong or can reset. I have started a new project and the same is still happening.
Any other ideas would be really appreciated!
    Thanks, Matt
