Anamorphic Setup - Final Cut Studio Training

I inadvertedly posted this in the DVD SP forum. I'd like to move it here where it belongs.
I just got my Final Cut Pro Studio a couple weeks ago, had to finish a project that I was doing in FCE and iDVD, and am now reviewing the tutorial on the Final Cut Studio Training DVD.
One of the first steps is to setup the session to "DV-NTSC Anamorphic". Since I had already blown past that 2 week ago, I did not see it this time, nor could I find the correct menu to make that setting for the tutorial. So I just blew by it; realizing that I'd find out sooner or later what the cost would be.
I found out: When doing the Motion segment and importing the final "TrailerLowerThirds" back into FCP, that part is compressed horizontally with black side bars on the right and left.
3 questions:
How do I make that setting if I've been running FCP already?
What does that do to the project, the clips, anything else?
If I were to make this mistake on one of my projects, how would I recover?
So far I've only been making projects in DV-NTSC 2:3 (I guess that's the right way to say it). Any insights would be appreciated.

My second question was: "What does that do to the project, the clips, anything else?"
The essential thing to bear in mind is that 4:3 and 16:9 anamorphic projects (in the SD world) have the SAME resolution: 720x480 pixels for NTSC, 720x576 for PAL. Because the resolution is the same, but the apparent frame size is different, it can lead to confustion, and it's easy to get it wrong - especially over there in the US where anamorphic broadcasting of SD material never took off, and thus widescreen sets were never mass market before HD.
(The situation here in Europe is different.).
Have a read of this for clarity: http://www.helerab.fi/widescreen/
The anamoprhic easy setup just tells FCP that you are capturing anamorphic material, and that new sequences should be anamorphic by default. You can override these defaults if necessary, but the easy setup just makes it harder to mess up.
The important thing when going to DVD is to keep the workflow anamorphic all the way through: output anamorphic material from FCP, make sure material is transcoded to mpeg (whether through compressor, iDVD or Quicktime) with anamorphic settings intact; and in your DVD authoring application, make sure projects, menus and tracks are created or flagged as 16:9.
The end result is an anamorphic DVD.
Your DVD player has a menu where you tell it what type of TV it's connected to - whether 4:3 or widescreen (and if it's a 4:3 set, how it should handle widescreen material: either letterboxing it or "cropping" it via pan/scan).
I've started noticing in other posts that some people think that if you have anamorphic material you should set your DVD player to 16:9. This is NOT A GOOD IDEA (unless the DVD player is attached to a widescreen TV, in which case you have it set to 16:9 already!) Just set the DVD player once and leave it alone.
Hope these observations help get you started. If you understand what's going on with anamorphic media, you're less likely to make mistakes. Best of luck.

  • Final Cut Studio Anamorphic error

When capturing SD data from DVDVCPRO tapes my system displays clip in viewer in horizontally distorted anamorphic format.
I've been using the same [recommended] Panasonic deck {AG-DV2500] with no problem for for five years on this show, no problems. Clip looks normal during capture but after capture, open clip in viewer and it's stretched anamorphic. The Anamorphic box is not checked in Settings but somehow, somewhere, the system checks the "Anamorphic" column during capture. I click on the check and the clip goes back to normal but it's one swift pain to scroll over to the properties and do this extra maneuver for every clip.
This problem only cropped up a month ago after producers added 1080p HD video to the show and I had to upgrade OSX from Tiger to Leopard 10.5.8 and upgraded FCP to Final Cut Studio 7 [in mid-production, always a no-no, but...] and using 1440X1080 HD format as a Timeline setting.
Apple support has not been able to figure this one out yet.
    ???

and using 1440X1080 HD format as a Timeline setting....
1440x1080 is a non-square pixel Anamorphic format -it displays as 1920x1080 in square pixels.

how works final cut studio with lion?

The thing to take from FCPX is that it isn't an update/upgrade from 7. It's an entirely new editor. As a professional video editor myself for 5 years, I felt just as hesitant as you when I first saw what Apple had done. However, I committed myself to biting the bullet for a little while to get comfortable with the new workflow, and I can vouch for Apple's new move toward this type of setup. It has improved my workflow enough to where I can confidently say I deliver projects, on average, in half the time, with no sacrifice to quality.
Give it another chance, if you can afford it. With a bit of training, and time into using it, you'll see it's a superior editor to FCP 7

  • Final Cut Studio 2 & New iMac

Before I bought the new iMAC I asked if Final Cut Studio 2 (Final Cut Pro 6.0) would work on this computer. I was told yes.
I put the install disc in, and a message of powerpc discs will not work. However, in the folder (on the disc) it says system requirements can be Intel Duel...
Is there something I have to do to get it to recognize the Intel download?
I originally downloaded the application to my PowerPc. That died, which is why I bought the new IMac.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The biggest complaint about FCX is that it isn't FCP. It's all new software with different methods for editing. Takes relearning how to import, organize and edit. Some fine it easy, some find it hard. There's a 30 day trial, so you can find out for yourself. Don't attempt this without training...it's VERY different.
That Apple Employee was wrong, and was just trying to sell you a computer. FCP 6 is 6 years old, and the current OS doesn't take it, nor FCP 7 into consideration as to if they will work at all. SOme people have issues with FCP 7, others don't. But the OS is not designed with FCP 6 in mind...so fair warning.
ANd yes, it takes elbow twisting to get it to even install.

  • Final cut studio 2 install failed?

I just bought a new final cut studio 2 and i put in the install disc, Than it said to put in the audio content 1 disc so i did. And than it said put in the final cut studio disck (Which i presume is the install disc) So i did than it said the install failed cause my source media was damaged? Anybody know how to fix this?
P.S I already tried cleaning the disc. No luck

I can't remember starting with an audio content disc during FCS2 setup.
From what you describe it sounds like an installation disc problem.

  • Mac Book Pro and final cut studio 2

    Hi,
Bought a MBP last year and am looking to purchase Final Cut Studio 2 Universal. After looking through some discussions I'm still unsure how well this package will run with my setup. Yes it will be fine, or yes it will run but with some limitations, or yes it will run but I should get a different video card, etc.....? A definate yes or no would be appreciated and any limitations or known issues. I will be using a120GB external hard drive for my video footage.
    Thanks, Mick
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong area or if these questions have been answered. I'm new to Macs and forums and wouldn't like to spend that much cash on a maybe!
    Mac Book Pro 15   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Intel core duo 2.16 GHz 2GB ram/Radeon X1600 256Mb 80GB hard drive

    Yes, it will be fine.
The only limitation is Color which needs an external screen with at least 1650x1050 to be kind of useful though it runs at smaller resolutions.

  • Final Cut Studio Manuals

    Hi
Does anyone know where I can get paperback manuals for Final Cut Studio.
Most of the stuff on the web is training manuals. I'm after a reference manual.
I know I could print the e-manuals that come with the software but I'd prefer to purchase.
    Thanks

"IT services installed one Mac with all the software we require and then cloned the other 19 units"
I'm going to play Devil's Advocate on this one. Please tell me that IT didn't just buy one copy and put it on 19 different computers. Please tell me that they purchased one set of the software but got 19 different serial numbers - one for each computer - or something like that. If not, you should let them know that they are breaking copyright laws. Maybe you would each have gotten a manual.

  • Question About Installing Individual Programs in Final Cut Studio 2

I recently installed Final Cut Studio 2, but I chose not to install Livetype on the initial setup. Now I would like to install it, but was curious why it seems to be installing all the information from the other programs I installed last week. Only Livetype was available on the "Custom Install" screen, it was blue and checked. Everything else was greyed out, but still checked. However, it seems to be repeating the same install process I did previously; and I am curious if this is going to create any redundancies on my computer. Any help?

Thank you for your quick response David!
    1. Great! Glad that worked out.
    2. When I say FCS 2 I mean the suite that came with Final Cut Pro 6, DVD Studio Pro 4, Motion 3, LiveType 2, Soundtrack Pro 2, Color, Compressor 3. I'm pretty sure it will play nicely with a new intel machine.
When I say FCS HD I mean the suite that came with Final Cut Pro (5.1.4), DVD Studio Pro, Motion 2, and Soundtrack Pro, and Compressor 2. This version (5.1) was made to work with intel machines.
    3. Thank you also for providing the link! I definitely want to make sure this is legal.
    Much appreciated

  • New user to Final Cut Studio 2

I am using Final Cut Studio 2 for the first time and I am having a hard time loading video files. I have several quicktime files which won't open in Final Cut and some video I recorded on a camcorder using mini DV tapes which I am also unsure how to import. I cannot figure out what the format of the DV is. As you can tell, I know pretty much nothing about video.... stuff.... I've read the manual for Final Cut (first volume) and my camcorder and neither were helpful for this basic stuff. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Mac Pro - Final Cut Studio 2 - Adobe Production Premium - NO FLASH PLAYING!

I recently purchased a Mac Pro with Leopard, Final Cut Studio 2, and Adobe Production Premium suite. I got everything setup yesterday, and I exported a Quicktime reference file from Final Cut, and brought it into Flash CS3 Media Encoder. The file seemed to encode fine, but when I try to open it, it shows that the Flash Player opens, but the video never actually opens. I also tired to import the FLV file into Flash Pro, and it acts as though it imports, but it does let me preview it. The ONLY thing that I think could have caused a problem is that I also have Sorenson Squeeze installed, which has its own On2 VP6 encoder. Again, this may have nothing to do with it since I copied the file to another Mac machine that did not have Sorenson on it, and downloaded the standalone Flash Player, and it acted the same. Any ideas on why FLV files would not play back would be greatly appreciated. I have ALL updates installed for OS X Leopard, as well as the CS3 collection. Thanks in advance.

After downloading an FLV player, and realizing that Adobe Flash Player will not work, all is swimming.

  • MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio 2

Hello, all. I currently have Final Cut Studio 1 (with Final Cut Pro 5, DVD Studio Pro 4, Motion 2, LiveType 2, Soundtrack Pro, and Compressor 2). I have an old PowerMac G4 from 2003, which Motion doesn't work on (and DVD Studio Pro doesn't run so great on, either - I haven't worked with Soundtrack Pro, LiveType, or Compressor too much). I'm thinking about buying a new MacBook Pro, and I'm wondering if all of FCS 1 (and especially Motion) would work on either the 13" or 15" models.
If I got a 13", here would be the specs:
    2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
If I got a 15", here would be the specs:
    3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 512MB
Anyone have any experience with running an older version of FCS - or even FCS 1 - on a setup like the ones I described above?
    Thanks, everyone,
    Kevin

Short answer: 13", no, 15", yes

  • FINAL CUT STUDIO 5.1 (Universal) compatibility with Mac os 10.6.4

We have just purchased a brand-new Mac Pro running Mac OS 10.6.4 my question is this, are there any known incompatibilities with Final Cut Studio 5.1 (Universal) running on a Mac Pro with Mac os 10.6.4.

    Try the Firewire Basic setting.
Also, your camera should be powered on and connected before the mac is turned on. Then, when you fire up the mac and launch FCP, close any projects that open with it.
Then, choose your Easy Setup before you open a new porject to capture into. Then it should work.

  • Final Cut Studio on MacBook Pro

Will all Final Cut Studio 2 programs and features run efficiently on a new MacBook Pro 13"? If not, what MacBook Pro would be the cheapest to run it on?

    Greetings,
I just upgraded to a new 3.06 GHz 17 inch MacBookPro with 4 GB of RAM from the previous generation 17 inch MacBookPro with a 2.33 GHz processor. I have noticed a tremendous increase in performance and ability to render and export with ease and alacrity.
Having said that, my general question is: Does anyone have any general advice for hardware/ video setup configurations? I am very well versed with iMovie (ha!), and now I am seriously trying to graduate to Final Cut Studio. I have made a few clips and played around with various transitions, filters, etc, but does anyone have advice for what settings I should be using?
Oh yeah, I have a Sony AVCHD Camcorder (HDR-CX7)... I am not a fan of the CMOS chip, but nonetheless, it is what I have at the moment.
    Any feedback will be appreciated.
    Cheers.
