Anchor object question

Hi i have this box that seem to be an anchor object, i can't figure out how i can release it to change the color of the the box at the top. Thanks

It's a table -- not an anchored object.

Creating TOC: order of anchored objects

Hey scripting experts,
i have a question creating an automated table of contents.
The problem is, that I am using anchored objects (text) in a text frame/story. Let's assume there is a text frame, starting with the anchor of an anchored object that contains the "headline # 1" and is placed e.g. on the top of the page. The anchor is followed by "headline #2" and "headline #3" (both simple text, no anchored object).
When generating toc, the order of the headlines will not be read as desired. The anchored object unfortunately is not added at first, but at the end. So the generated order is: #2, #3, #1. I would prefer #1, #2, #3.
Do you think, there might be a suitable (and scriptable) way to teach InDesign, to count an anchored object according to the position of the corresponding anchor in the text? Yes? I would be glad for any advice!

thank you very much for your quick and technically versatile reply! Unfortunately my answer reaches you slightly late – due to Easter/holidays (hopefully you spend them relaxed ...).
Nevertheless i am really glad having received your hint. At the moment i am still a bloody beginner in scripting/xml-rules, but trying hard to forge ahead. Maybe aming for a specific target causes progress ... You signalized me there probably is a solution, so with your hint at the back of my mind, i will start practicing now.

In my case I was using a named anchored object to get a handle to an actual
service object. My named object that I registered in the name service was
an intermediary to which I did not maintain a connection. So I have not
explicitly tested what you are asking.
However, I too was not using a hard coded reference to the SO, and fail over
and load balancing worked fine. The functions of fail over and load
balancing are not done by the service object but by the name service, proxy
and router. Since you are getting a proxy back any time you do a lookup in
the name service I would think that fail over should work with any anchored
object that is registered in the name service. When you do a RegisterObject
call you will notice that one of the arguments is the session duration,
which implies to me that fail over will be handled the same as for service
objects.
Load balancing adds another wrinkle. Load balancing is handled by a router.
You must get a proxy to the router and not a proxy to an instance of the
object that the router is doing the load balancing for. In the latter
scenario you will be bypassing the router. If you are creating, anchoring
and registering your objects dynamically you will not have a router so you
will not be able to load balance! This applies even if the objects are
instantiated within partitions that are load balanced because you will still
be getting proxies back to a particular instance of the anchored objects.
There are ways to accomplish load balancing between objects that you
register yourself. However, the best solution will vary depending on the
actual problem trying to be solved. If you would like to discuss this
further, include a little more detail about the scenario you need to
implement and I will give you what I know.
BTY what I have outlined above also applies to getting references via a
system agent.

I can not comment on the speed difference because I never tested it.
But, I
will say that we looked at the agent solution at a client sight
before. I
will give the same warning I gave them. If you go the agent direction
you
are now using agents for a purpose that they were not intended. Even
though
it technically works, as soon as you start using a piece of
functionality in
a way the developer did not intend it to be used you run the risk of
forward
compatibility problems. By this I mean, since agents were not
originally
intended to be used to look up service / anchored object references,
it may
not work in the future because it is not likely to be given
consideration in
any future design.
As we all know, programmers are always stretching the bounds of the
tools
they use and you may have a good reason (i.e. performance). I just
wanted to
let you know the possible risk.
One final note on a limitation of using system agents to obtain

to anchored objects. You can not access agents across environments.
So, if
you have connected environments and need to get references to services
in
another environment for fail-over or whatever, you will not be able to
do it
with agents.

Text to anchored objects

Hi,
Somehow I think my question is quite simple to answer, but I've run out of ideas right now...
Is it possible to place text in an anchord object and remove it from it's current story in one action? The words are all labeled (xml), but they need to be placed outside the textframe they are in.
Right now the only way I see that happening is to copy-paste every single word in it's anchored object (which is also placed on the right place by hand...)
I hope you can help me! Anyhow, thanks for any suggestion...

Images as anchored objects in text

I use CS4 on a Mac. I'm working on a book with photos of my art in the text. Before I've used Place to insert all images. (I use Picasa to straighten and crop my photos, they are all jpgs in high resolution, the photos are in a separate folder on my Mac).
To make the pictures anchored objects in-line, I first place the graphic, then according to the instructions I cut, then paste in text, select image, then set the anchored object above the text etc.

My question is what happens to the image when you cut and paste. Does it retain it's placed format, like file size and resolution? It seems my InDesign file should be bigger with the added images.
Should I be worried?

When use File>Place to insert an image to InDesign - InDesign creates a low-res thumbnail to act as a "placeholder" to the original image.
It's very cumbersome on the computer when viewing the images in full resolution within InDesign. As it could be displaying 10mb for each image and 10 images would 100 mb per page, quite a lot to render; for example.
Anchoring objects has no bearing on the file size (well maybe a little).
The file size and resolution is not affected when you place an image. But the Resolution is affected if you SCALE the image any amount.
If you go to the Window>Info panel and select an image then you can see TWO options ACTUAL and EFFECTIVE PPI.
Actual refers to what the original PPI of the image is (ppi = pixels per inch and refers to resolution)
And Effective shows the the PPI after the image has been scaled.
For example if you place a 72 ppi image and scale it 24% it will now be Effectively 300 ppi (100/24)*72=300
For printing you should ensure that the image quality is 300 ppi (it's a general rule of thumb and it's not entirely accurate but that's what most printing places operate at as a standard).
For the record - you should resave images as JPG if you make ANY alteration to them (as a rule of thumb) saving as JPG over and over can add jpeg artifacts to the image which will degrade the image over time, as jpeg is a lossy format (information is removed with each save). A better way would be to save as TIFF as this is a LOSSLESS format - in that no data is removed upon saving.
I wouldn't recommend Picassa for your image editing. You should get Photohsop or failing that a free open source program like GIMP.

How to move the anchor object in indesign cs2 using js?

i can able to move the normal textframe and other objects but cant do this for anchor objects.
syntex: anchorobject.move([x value,y value],undefined,true)
how to move the anchor objects?

Could it be that the anchord object in question won't move because you have it set to keep within margins which is preventing the move you're requesting? I've certainly run into that.
I've also run into the situation where the object model thinks the anchored object is in one place when it is actually in another because of that same keep within margins option. In this case, a move will apparently not work because the move is invisible, it being completely outside of the margins -- although that only applies to relative moves, I think.

Is there any way to arrange an anchored object? For example, I have anchored a simple graphic, but it's bounding box is filled with white. Text will wrap around it fine, but I can't get the white behind the copy.

[JS][CS3-CS5] anchored objects/inline back to text

g'day there.
been handed a reformatting job where the client has supplied text in word with additional textframes (they have made callouts next to their body text), meaning when the text is imported into indesign, the text has hundreds of anchored objects containing the callouts. is it possible to take these anchored objects and convert them back into the actual main textframe? ATM, the only way to do this would be to cut and paste.
i have done a search on the forums and elsewhere to remedy this and there are plenty of threads advising on how to take text and make anchored objects out of them, but what i want to do is the reverse.

i feel strange answering my own question, but i stumbled across this older applescript and it seemed to do the trick, so thought i'd put it out there.

Converting textframes into anchored objects

I'm generating the ePub files from the InDesign and found that some of my textframes which are in separate stories are captured at the end of the files, but I'd like to have them at the exact position. But when those frames are capturing manually as anchored objects, it looks fine. Please confirm how this can be achieved either scripting or other method?

@Praveen – the first question you have to answer to yourself is:
is there a general prescribe where to anchor exactly a single text frame in the main story?
If you cannot say that in a general, logical way, you cannot automate this task.
Or you have to programme a lot of exceptions, that it would be easier to do it manually.
For InDesign CS5.5 and above it is very easy to anchor a text frame using the UI with two clicks per instance. Scripting those is a more complex task.
1. You have to identify separate text frames (you can only anchor single, non-threaded ones!).
2. Perhaps you have to identify a geometrical relation between the single text frame and the main story in form of a single insertion point at the beginning or end of a paragraph…).
3. And you have to define some properties for the anchor behaviour of the stray text frame you want to anchor.
How many stray text frames do you have?
How many documents where you want to anchor those?
Describe the projected time for the task if done in the UI…
Is it reliable using a script at all?
Taking into account that writing (20%) and testing (80%) a script for this task would take some hours to perhaps a day… Plus the time for analyzing the original documents (special cases may be a hurdle one cannot overcome).

Anchor Objects - Purpose?

I used IDCS2 a few years ago for a previous job, and now am using CS4 for a new position at a different company. They have some decent online training for the app, but one of the modules talked about anchored objects.
It's not the technical aspect that's confusing - at least not yet. But I can't figure why this is a feature - how does this actually work in a completed document? Can anyone point me to an example?
Sorry if this is a basic question, but I can't grasp what this functionality is for.

An anchored object is any object which is positioned relative to text.
It keeps with specific text when the text reflows.
The uses are many! (i.e. Callouts, graphs, dingbat-type objects,
pictures illustarting specific text, etc.)

ID CS6 drag and drop anchored object - unable to get blue square

Hi,
I am a long time and intensive user of CS.
A week ago or so, the blue square for dragging an anchored object disappeared.
I have to do it manually. Troublesome since I am in the process of producing a number of ebooks.
Any ideas? Thanks (I tried restarting the preferences, to no avail)

New technique to place multiple anchored objects in InDesign story

Hello,
For a while I have been trying to figure out how to insert multiple anchored objects into an Indesign story. As far as I can tell, you cannot copy multiple objects that have already been placed in a document (such as a multi-page pdf) into an InDesign story, but must copy and paste them one-by-one into the story. This is a problem for a project I am working on where I want to have a large number of 340x52 pt pdfs to flow throughout a document in a master text frame interspersed with text.
I have now found a solution for this issue that I thought I would share in case it would be helpful for anyone. It utilizes Automator actions for Mac OS X and Microsoft Word 2011 [2008 may work also, but I don't have a copy of that to test]; I am not good with scripting but perhaps similar solutions could be found for other systems and programs.
1. If you want to place a multipage pdf within a text frame, first it into individual files for each page (with Acrobat Pro or pdftk or something similiar).
2. Create an Automator service or program with the action "Create New Word Document". You can also use another automator action to save the document, or save it manually (to change the filename). In the finder, select the items you want, then run the service or drag them into the Automator program you have created.
3. Place the word document into your InDesign story. Your items will now be anchored objects ordered in your text frame as they were in the finder.
Please let me know if this is helpful or if anyone has suggestions for doing this process is a more efficient way. I am not sure, but it may be the case that this approach would only work on Macs, as I gather from this thread.

I might note that I am using InDesign CS 5, and importing from a document stored in docx format.

Get textFrame by label returns null and anchored objects

In my page structure, I got one main text frame (the content area) and two vertical text fromes on the sides of the page. There is also a small box textframe on top of the page. All these textboxes EXCEPT the main text frame are ALL "ANCHORED objects". I had to make them anchored objects, eitherwise after importing data, the boxes would jump around. (Example, the small box textframe that is on the top would get moved to the content area textframe etc). Not sure if using anchored objects is the proper way to fix this.
When I try to get the small box text frame, it does not work using the findItems (returns null) but it works fine with the getByLabel method. Why is that?

Text wrap in anchored objects

In order to place text boxes relative to the spine, I have placed them as anchored objects.
But now, these text frames do not respect text wrap setting from objects outside of the anchored object.
I have made sure that ignore text wrap in text frame options is not checked.
Is this a bug?
And does anyone know a workaround?

In order to make my design indifferent to later added pages, I have placed all text frames and graphic placeholders as anchored objects, positioning them relative to spine.
When I now place an object on top of such an anchored text frame, text wrap is not working, even if i overide the master page item.
The only work around I have found is to copy the respective text frame and make the original master page item unvisible.
Is there not another way to to this?
For me, the best would be another way of placing text and graphic frames relative to spine.
Bus as soon as one overrides the master page item, the object is not placed anymore relative to spine if another page is inserted.

CS4 text wrap over anchored object

Every time I place an anchored object (doesn't matter if it's graphic or text frame) and apply text wrap, Indesign freezes permanently and only solution is killing it via task manager.
I opened CS3 file with anchored objects w/ txt wrap and the same freeze happens when trying to move, delete or apply different wrap settings to object.
It never happened in previous version of ID on my machine.
Any solution to this problem? Thanks.
