Anchor points on line segments.....

Closed path made with pen tool in Flash MX  comprises of line segments & curved segments both. While adding anchor points on segments it is noticed
that pen tool adds anchor points on curvaceous segments but not on line segments. Why is it so ? Is their any way to accomlish this task ?

If you hover over the pen tool in its toolbar you should get a selection of different pen tools, at least one of which will allow you to add an anchor point on a straight line.

In illustrator, is there a way to reduce anchors points in a segment path without altering the path?
Is there a better and more efficient way to reduce anchors points than using the pen-minus tool?
    Thanks.

That's what the Simplify command is for. It tries to reduce the number of segments while you judge the results and adjust the parameters accordingly.
Of course, if any given curve were possible with just two anchors, then all paths could have just two anchors. So obviously, fewer segments is not always possible.
As with many other things, though, you need to realize this: Automatic functions have no human discernment whatsoever. That's just as true in the matter of optimizing paths as it is in auto-tracing. The program routine which tries to figure out which anchors can go and which anchors must stay has absolutely no idea of what the path is actually a drawing of. Only you know that. So the bottom line remains the same: Optimizing paths correctly should be done with deliberate discernment, not just left up to dumb automated routines.
Illustrators draw paths deliberately--one anchor at a time--for good reason.

The two lines you've provided intersect at a single point, which is by definition not a line.
If you want to return a line, then the intersection has to happen along some length of the line.
Also, whenever I look at geometries posted I always run sdo_geom.validate_geometry on the
    data.
Your user_sdo_geom_metadata should include the srid value stored in the geometries.
The bounds of your user_sdo_geom_metadata should be a bit larger to encompass
    both geometries.

  • Direct Selection Tool will not choose individual "path" anchor points

    Photohsop CS4, 11.0.1
Mac OSX 10.4.11, MacPro, Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 2.66 GHz, 9GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT-256 MB VRAM, 500GB Startup HD, 500GB HD (wlhere file resides and scratch disk), OpenGL enabled
I am unable to select individual anchor points and line segments of a path, although the anchor points appear to be individually highlighted, copying them copies the entire path, not just the selected points, and deleting them deletes the entire path, not just the selected points. In effect the "hollow arrow" direct selection tool is working like the "solid arrow path selection" tool.
I ran Disk Warrior, repaired disk permissions. I deleted old preferences by renaming file with Photoshop closed, and then restarted photoshop.
After calling Adobe Tech Support, they are recommending I reinstall the entire CS4 suite, which I am hesitant to do. At the least I will lose all of my menu preferences in all programs. Should I just follow their advice and reinstall CS4?
    Thanks.

When you click on it with path selection tool (black arrow) which option is enabled in options bar at top - add, subtract, intersect, or exclude?
    Can you combine paths?
Have you tried drawing a new path and selecting points on it?
Can you still add and subtract points?
Edit: Can you pull on the bezier handles?
Edit: is it a vector mask or a standalone path?
I'm trying to simulate your problem – in the meantime I'm brainstorming, not sure how else to help. It seems like something restarting the program would fix.
What about quitting the app. Then going to User: Library: Prefs: Adobe Photoshop CS4 paths, trash it then restart?

  • How to replace a line segment?

Here's what I want to do:
Take the selected line segment, and replace it with a series of line segments, scaled to the length of the line.
I'm not quite sure how to go about this.  I don't see any line object relating to a path item.  All I see are anchors.  I know I can access the two anchors of the line segment that's selected, but to begin with, how to I delete the line connecting the anchors?

Here's an image to help illustrate.  The object on the left has a line segment selected.  The script runs and removes the segment, then replaces it with the door path, scaled up to the correct width to fit:

  • Pen tool cursor is different from the anchor point

Hi, I'm using flash cc 2014, I'm having this issue, which is when I use pen tool to draw something, the anchor is different from the pen cursor. I need help !

    Kyle
as suggested but not quite defined what you want to do is after you have drawn a curve path with the pen tool you now want to add a straight segment, so you press down the option tool drag the end of the leading anchor handle while still holding down the option key and drag the handle into the anchor point. Nothing else will move but the anchor point handle.
Once the handle is withdrawn into the anchor point you can now position the pen tool, first of course releasing the option key, and clicking and the segment will be a straight path unless of course you drag as you click.
I agree it would be nice to have a keyboard toggle to allow for a straight segment.
Perhaps there is but I do not know of it. It is a good complaint. I believe there are ways of accomplishing this in other applications.
There is another way as well. Just hold the command key to get a select tool and click anywhere to deselect the path. Then click where you want the straight segment to end and the click the pen tool on the last anchor point of the segment you previously created.

  • How can I find out the angle of a straight line between two anchor points?

I would like to extend a line which is at a given angle (not 45,90 degree). Is there a quick and reliable way to do this? or to find out the angle of a segment?
What I'm doing at the moment is just direct selecting an anchor point and using the visual guides to extend it. I don't think this is exact though so was I wondering if anyone had any techniques for doing this?
    Thanks!

    portfelio,
    Smart Guides are your friends.
As a general solution, you may:
    1) With the Line Segment Tool ClickDrag between the two Anchor Points (Smart Guides say anchor);
    2) With the appropriate Reference Point selected in the Transform palette, increase the W or H value and Ctrl/Cmd+Enter;
    3) Lock the new auxiliary line;
    4) ClickDrag the relevant Anchor Point of the original line along the extended auxiliary line (Smart Guides say path);
    5) Unlock and delete the auxiliary line.
After 1), you may also click the Line Segment Tool to see the angle.
Or,  in a case with a straight path (segment), you may use the Scale Tool:
    1) (Direct) Select the straight path (segment);
    2) Switch to the Scale Tool and Click the Anchor Point that is to stay, then ClickDrag the one to move (Smart Guides say uniform when you are dragging in the right direction).

  • Gradient Mesh - distorted segments with no anchor points

I often run into very strange behaviour with the Gradient Mesh tool, where a line segment becomes heavily warped (kinked, looped or with a hard angle in it) that has no anchor points or control handles to account for the distorted line segment. I've only seen this happen with the Gradient Mesh tool. In my most recent occurrence of this issue I have what should be a gently curved segment between two flat control points, and instead there's this massive "kink" in it that has a hard angle and nearly a loop that has nothing at all to do with the anchor points. There are no anchor points in-between these two (I started with a rectangle and just started adding and manipiulating points).
Anyone else know what I'm talking about and have a workaround or solution? Or even an explanation of why this occurs might make me less frustrated.
    t

Thanks for the response, Mike. I checked the surrounding points as a matter of first-line diagnosis, and nothing explains this distortion.
In the image above you can see a "hump" which is not accounted for by any of the handles. The position of both control handles on each side of the segment would indicate a concave segment. The anterior handle of the circled point surprisingly has no effect whatsoever on the segment it is attached to - it is unclear to me what segment it is then controlling.

  • Why does the pen tool remove previous line when I add new anchor points??

Why does the pen tool remove previous lines??
    Video here:  http://youtu.be/8AmPUkD88h0
It removes the hairline on the face, when I add more anchor points. Why? And how do I correct it?

The ins and outs of the new and changed behaviors in the re-engineered pen tool have been disussed here on this forum and I'm sure a little detour to the help files will also shed some light on this...

  • Anchor Points and Intersect Guide Lines Disappeared

Hi! I must have hit some type of command on my keyboard but now my anchor points and intersect guides have disappeared that would normally appear when I roll my mouse over the anchor point or the intersecting paths. I have hit Ctrl + H as well as went to the menu manually and my edges are showing. How do I turn back on this ability to see my anchor points and intersecting lines guide in Illustrator?
    Thanks in advance!!
Edit: I run on Adobe Illustrator CS5

Is View > Smart Guides turned on? If not, enable it.
If Smart Guides are already turned on, check if Align to Grid is enabled in the View menu and turn it off.

  • How to create a wavy line with consistent wave regardless of anchor point spacing?

The above image shows my problem. All have the same zig zag effect setting, but due to inconsistent anchor point spacing there is inconsistent waviness. Is there a way to make a wavy line that is not a distortion based on anchor point distances? I'd like all my wavy lines to look nice and consistent like this:
The only reason they're so consistent is the absolute setting has been used but these lines are all straight and have only 2 anchor points, start and finish, hence the wave is consistent. It's harder when the lines are curvy and have a different number and spacing of anchor points.

If you want the fill to follow the boundary, here's one way to do it, more easily done than demonstrated:

  • I am getting this message: "Please use the add anchor point tool on a segment of a path" -- need help!

    Hello guys,
I am new to illustrator and am trying to trace one of my scanned sketches on Illustrator CC. I have been watching tutorials on Youtube.com and have followed every step, but when it comes to using the pen tool, I receive a pop up message reading, "Please use the add anchor point tool on a segment of a path." I researched Adobe forums and came across another discussion with someone who had the same problem. After making the changes that people suggested to the other person's discussion, the problem still occurred with me. I am still getting the same message even after making sure I have deselected Snap to grid, etc. Can anyone please help me out!?

It sounds to me like you're using the Add Anchor Point tool instead of the Pen tool. If you are trying to trace a scanned sketch, you'll be creating content from scratch in which case you want to use the Pen tool. The Add Anchor Point tool can only modify an existing path, it can't create one. Switch to your Pen tool and see if that helps.

  • Joining anchor point to middle of a line

    Hi!
Is it possible to join the end of one line to the middle of another line? This is to create a live paint area. I am using 5.
    Thank you!
    Richard

Anchor points have and two connectors and no more. So you can't have an anchor point controlling three paths. It's not possible to join paths in the middle of them.
However, for Live Paint, you don't really need to join the paths. Just draw a path that overlaps the other and Live Paint will see the area between paths as a fillable section.

  • Obtain offset of a point from a line segment

    Hi,
Given a line segment and a point perpendicular to the line segment(both in LRS). Is it possible to retrieve the offset of the point from the line segment. i've serached the LRS documentation and have not found a built in function to do so.

  • Why does removing an anchor point from this line reshape the image?

    Hi,
I tried removing an anchor point from a semi-circle, but removing the anchor point reshapes the image.
    Video of it here:
Anyone know how I can correct it? The semi-circle is a portion of a circle that remained after I had removed a portion, so reshaping it by moving the remaining anchor point will not do, as it will not create that perfect semi-circle.

Can you first change to outline view then select the anchor point in question with the direct selection tool and post a screenshot of the outcome (with guides showing). Just want to see if there is a handle point attached and then this may be the reason why. It may be worth using the delete anchor point tool instead of the eraser.
