Anchored objects are transparent

Thanks in advance for the help. I am using CS5.
I have a document were multiple anchored objects ended up overlapping each other. My problem is that the anchored objects have a transparency set to them that I cannot remove. Things to note:
The transparency goes away if I release the anchored object.
I have an object style assigned to the anchored frames, but there are style overrides that I cannot clear on the anchored objects.
Changes I make to the object style assigned to the anchored objects have no effect. Only the "anchored objects options" attributes box will modify the anchored objects.
Any help with this issue would be great. Thanks!

Certain objects are transparent in flash movie

I've been getting reports from users that certain objects are invisible in my flash banner. The browser culprit is IE 8 (but someone also reported seeing this in IE 6). I have been unable to duplicate this and therefore, find it very difficult to troubleshoot. I do have the Wmode set to transparent, but I've made it opaque and still had the "invisible" reports. Here is the site:

The objects reported as invisible are the robot's body and head. If someone out there can see this and give me a clue, it would be very helpful.

Need anchored objects to be behind text

Anchored objects have aways had lot of shortcomings for my workflow. One shortcoming I'd really like to see fixed in future versions of ID is the inability to choose for the anchored object to appear behind the text it is anchored with. Here are just a few uses that I can think of that would be helpful in my workflow:
Creating numbered lists that have specialty art behind the numbers. To do this currently, you have to either do manual numbering and group it with each object and anchor the object with the number into the line of text or you have to keep the auto-number list and the objects for the numbers separate and manually reposition the number objects whenever the text reflows.
Creating paragraph backgrounds that flow with the paragraph. Right now about the only way to do that is using the paragraph rules or tables which have severe formatting limitations (no rounded corners, ignore text wrap, etc.), and the rules are difficult to resize. If you could create the background as a ID object or placed art and anchor it to the beginning or end of the paragraph, you could manually resize it to the size of the paragraph and it will flow with the paragraph whereever you need it (this currently will not work unless the object can be made transparent to the text using an effect.
Captioning anchored images could actually overlap the image if and where necessary. Right now, if you want captions to appear on top of an anchored image, you have to group the caption with the image before anchoring it into the text flow.
There are workarounds obviously for these tasks (as I've indicated), but by their nature workarounds are time consuming. I'm always looking for ways to automate tasks and save time in ID. Having the option to make an object appear behind the text it is anchored with would be a tremendous time saver.
Anyone else see a use for stacking order option with anchored objects?

With anchoring "Above Line" the anchored objects are really stacked behind. At least that stacking order is true for all characters after the anchor character. Using a different anchoring method will always yield in anchored objects stacked above (foreground).
Doing some tricks with the effects panel on the anchored object is alright, so that all the other text, that is stacked below will showing through, but you should be aware, that these effects will change the game when it comes to color separation for print workflows.

As you can see, the usually overprinting color [Black] on the text below is left out. When exporting a PDF, I think nearly no prepress tool in the world will find an automatic way to change this because of the stacking order of the elements.
If the green rectangle would be stacked behind the text like in anchoring "Above Line" we will see the following with separation preview CMYK:
Turn off K in the separation preview will give a surprising image:
All black text, that comes after the anchor character will overprint, all text before will not. And that "will not" is definitive. If we look at the objects in Acrobat Pro after exporting to PDF, we will see that not overprinting characters "ut endis" in my little screenshot here are below the green rectangle, all characters following after the anchor are above the green rectangle.
Here a screen shot from Acrobat Pro that will reveal the stacking order a bit (the transparent background of the page is shown as gray; an option in Acrobat Pro's view preferences):
So in the end, "ut endis" will be printed with a total amount of color:
0 Cyan
0 Magenta
0 Yellow
100 Black
Sum: 100%
The "black" text following due to overprinting* (EDIT) will be printed with:
75 Cyan
5 Magenta
100 Yellow
100 Black
Sum: 280%
* AND of stacking order of course!
All other black text will overprint as well, but there is no effect for the green rectangle because the text is stacked behind the rectangle.

Anchoring Object to a Paragraph Style? Objects behind text

Hello,
I am trying to anchor an graphic object to a paragraph style that is a numbered paragraph. I have set up my numbering and I want a single graphic to be anchored to the number so it appears behind the number each time I choose that paragrah style.
Is this possible to do?
Or perhaps I should ask how other people put graphics behind bullets or numbers and have them anchor to the text...
I sure could use soem help with this; it seems like it should be easy...

I found this intriguing, so I thought I'd see what I could come up with.
I made a numbered paragraph style, to start. Then I made a Cyan filled ellipse, which I anchored in front of the first word in one of the paragraphs, and changed the positioning to custom and made sure it was relative to the anchor, and turned off keep within frame boundaries, to allow me to position it "behind" the number. As emmanuel points out, anchored objects are actually in front of the text, so so far it's not working.
I selected the ellipse and changed it's blend mode to multiply. This will not change it's color where it is over white, but it will darken wherever it is on top of another color, creating a rich black number, for example, if you used black text. Looks pretty good now.
Select the ellipse and create a new object style based on it. This will by default include the blend mode and anchored object parameters, and be sure the style is applied to the selected ellipse. Now cut the ellipse and paste it on the pastboard out of the way so you don't lose it.
As long as the object is on the clipboard you can use it for a find/change operation, so you can do that now, or later, just by copying it again when it's convenient. The find/change needs to be a GREP search for ^(.) which means find any character at the beginning of a paragraph, and replace with ~c$1 which means replace with the formatted contents of the clipboard and the found character. Be sure to set the find formatting options to the numbered paragraph style.
Because you gave the object an object style that includes the blend mode and positioning, and you pasted it as a formatted object, those attributes are preserved and the graphic will be positioned correctly for each paragraph.

Anchored Objects Disappear When Page Moved

I'm working in InDesign CS2 in XP environment. I duplicated a page that contains anchored objects. It was page one; the duplicate page is now page 5. I modified the duplicate page 5. Now I want the altered page 5 moved into page 1 position.
When I move the pages either by dragging or by right clicking on the page icon and using the Move Page command, all anchored objects on the page disappear. I also cannot release the anchored objects because the release command is disabled when I select an object with the selection tool.
Any suggestions?

I got your file, and after looking at it, it's probably better not to post it publicly. For the lurkers, it's a draft government document, not yet ready for release.
Anyway, I took a look at the file, first in CS2 where it was created, and then in CS3 to see if it would behave differently.
First, the anchored objects aren't really gone, just temporarily invisible. if you select the objects and move the page, you can still see the selection outline. It's some sort of screen display bug/glitch, I think, in CS2. Exporting to .inx didn't fix it, so I think it's not corruption, and it doesn't happen at all in CS3.
The bad news is I have no way to explain what the problem is, or how to prevent it from happening. The good news is I found a way to make them reappear! Select the text frame with the selection tool, and change its stacking order. I tried Ctrl + Shift + [ to send to the back, and Ctrl + ] to bring forward, and both seemed to work, though it may make a difference where in the order they start out. If one attempt doesn't work, try again, or send all the way back or forward.
For what it's worth, this is only a display problem. Even when the anchored objects are not visible on the screen they show in both printed and exported PDF.

Table of Content Help - Anchored Objects/Listing Order

For the love of god this is extremely frustrating. I have been searching for literally hours trying to find the solution.
I have a large document, linked frames from page 1 through page 44 for example.
On many pages I have figures, and using an incrementing paragraph style, these figure captions are numbered sequentially.
When generating a table of contents, any figures that are in the main linked frames are created in the proper order.
My issue is that on a few pages, I have figures inside anchored objects - basically an anchored text frame with a picture and the figure label text using my paragraph style.
These anchored objects are not being put in the table of contents in the proper order - they are being added to the end of the toc! Indesign should be smart enough to add items on the page in the proper order - be it the main frame or an anchored one!
For example
Figure 1 - page 1
Figure 2 - page 1
Figure 3 - page 2
Figure 5 - Page 3
Figure 4 - Page 2 <<< huh?
Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

Looking at Page 7, it should be obvious that we can add additional deatils to the reports, including cover pages.
Though, after looking at Page 8, I think I may have you slightly in the wrong direction. toc-template appears to simply cover the commands for the table of contents and there is another template to control everything. But is that file visible to edit?
If you run FRConfig.cmd, you can find more clues.
Go to the MBeans tab, expand com.hyperion, then expand Financial Reporting, and Attributes.
The two attributes that immeidately jump out are TextPrintTemplate and BookTOCPrintTemplate
- TextPrintTemplate is the FR_TextTemplate.doc file in <<EPM_ORACLE_INSTANCE>>/products/FinancialReporting/bin/ folder
- BookTOCPrintTemplate is the toc-template.rtf file previously discussed.
Once again, though, the other template exposed to us is most likely just driving the content and is not at a high enough definition level for this to work how you want it to.
I would say to use the example in the PDF and try adding that to the table of contents page before it does all of the loops. Perhaps it will work from there, perhaps not.
If that doesn't work, Thursday we can attempt to drill into this more.

TOC scrambled with headings from anchored objects

I have a book design with first-level headings in the main text flow and second-level headings inside of anchored objects in the left margin of the pages. When I generate a TOC the headings used to be in the correct order, precisely as intended. After installing the 5.0.2 update however the TOC gets scrambled when I update it. The second-level headings from the anchored objects are printed before the first-level heading (in the TOC) when they are both on the same page. Second-level headings on pages after the first-level heading are printed after the first-level heading (in the TOC) where they should be.
The source of this problem may be the altered search-order for headings that should be included in the TOC. Although it seems only logical that the main text flow defines the order from top to bottom and anchored objects should be included from the anchor in the main text flow. Now it seems that the search order is from left to right on the pages.
Adobe says to have made major fixes in the areas of both anchored objects and table of content generation, but whatever they did the only difference I find is for the worse.
Is there a fix for this fix?

Long shot, but go to the application preferences and uncheck the box in the General section that says Prevent Selection of Locked Objects.

Many objects are partially transparent though opacity is always set to 100%

I've noticed that many of my objects in this 3D project appear slightly transparent, as if the opacity is set to 85% or so, and I have no idea why. For example, when two objects are on screen and one is in front of the other in terms of Z space, I can see the other object coming through. Any idea why this is happening?

A screenshot might be helpful to know when/how you're seeing this
I'm with David, thinking that it's set at a higher level somewhere.
Have you used a light in the project? Also, have you tried to solo out a group with this issue, and does the problem persist in solo mode?

Why are transparent Keynote objects visible in playback?

I often want an object to rotate around one end rather than about the center. My workaround is to duplicate the object in question, flip it around both axes and attach it to the end of the object that I want to be the axis of rotation.
At this point, I'm seeing a mirror image of my object attached to my original object, I make the mirror image object completely transparent (color slider goes to completely transparent, object slider goes to completely transparent).
Now I group the transparent object to the visible object and apply the rotate action. The object appears to rotate about its end as desired. But in playback, I can see the "transparent" object.
I'm at a loss as to how to make a line object any more transparent than to set the color of its lines transparent and to set the object graphics to transparent.

My real problem is with lines, but your response inspired me to try something I hadn't thought of, and it worked!
Before grouping the "transparent," mirror image to the visible object, remove any arrows from lines, then set the line stroke to None.
Maybe this bug gets fixed in iWork '09, but I'm not holding my breath.

Get textFrame by label returns null and anchored objects

I have the following two functions:

In my page structure, I got one main text frame (the content area) and two vertical text fromes on the sides of the page. There is also a small box textframe on top of the page. All these textboxes EXCEPT the main text frame are ALL "ANCHORED objects". I had to make them anchored objects, eitherwise after importing data, the boxes would jump around. (Example, the small box textframe that is on the top would get moved to the content area textframe etc). Not sure if using anchored objects is the proper way to fix this.
When I try to get the small box text frame, it does not work using the findItems (returns null) but it works fine with the getByLabel method. Why is that?

In my case I was using a named anchored object to get a handle to an actual
service object. My named object that I registered in the name service was
an intermediary to which I did not maintain a connection. So I have not
explicitly tested what you are asking.
However, I too was not using a hard coded reference to the SO, and fail over
and load balancing worked fine. The functions of fail over and load
balancing are not done by the service object but by the name service, proxy
and router. Since you are getting a proxy back any time you do a lookup in
the name service I would think that fail over should work with any anchored
object that is registered in the name service. When you do a RegisterObject
call you will notice that one of the arguments is the session duration,
which implies to me that fail over will be handled the same as for service
objects.
Load balancing adds another wrinkle. Load balancing is handled by a router.
You must get a proxy to the router and not a proxy to an instance of the
object that the router is doing the load balancing for. In the latter
scenario you will be bypassing the router. If you are creating, anchoring
and registering your objects dynamically you will not have a router so you
will not be able to load balance! This applies even if the objects are
instantiated within partitions that are load balanced because you will still
be getting proxies back to a particular instance of the anchored objects.
There are ways to accomplish load balancing between objects that you
register yourself. However, the best solution will vary depending on the
actual problem trying to be solved. If you would like to discuss this
further, include a little more detail about the scenario you need to
implement and I will give you what I know.
BTY what I have outlined above also applies to getting references via a
system agent.

I can not comment on the speed difference because I never tested it.
But, I
will say that we looked at the agent solution at a client sight
before. I
will give the same warning I gave them. If you go the agent direction
you
are now using agents for a purpose that they were not intended. Even
though
it technically works, as soon as you start using a piece of
functionality in
a way the developer did not intend it to be used you run the risk of
forward
compatibility problems. By this I mean, since agents were not
originally
intended to be used to look up service / anchored object references,
it may
not work in the future because it is not likely to be given
consideration in
any future design.
As we all know, programmers are always stretching the bounds of the
tools
they use and you may have a good reason (i.e. performance). I just
wanted to
let you know the possible risk.
One final note on a limitation of using system agents to obtain
references
to anchored objects. You can not access agents across environments.
So, if
you have connected environments and need to get references to services
in
another environment for fail-over or whatever, you will not be able to
do it
with agents.

the reference to the service object somewhere. You don't want to call
"bindObject" every time you need to use this service object, "bind" is
a
time-consuming operation, even on the same partition. Keeping
reference
could be undesirable if your object could be moved across partitions
(e.g. business object).
The alternative solution is to use agents. You can create custom
agent,
make it a subagent of an active partition agent and use it as a
placeholder for whatever service you need. "FindSubAgent" works much
faster than "bindObject", we verified that and agent is "user-visible"
by its nature.

happen and was trying to determine why it was happing. It makes sense

you think about it. Forte is trying to avoid making a remote method
invocation if it can.
Now, for anything more complex than looking locally first and if none

found give me any remote instance you can find, you will need to do

work. Using a naming scheme like Jez suggests below works well.

there's a mechanism used within SCAFFOLDS that allows the
location of the 'nearest' SO when more than one is available.
It involves registering each duplicated SO under three dynamically
built
names. The names include the partition, the node or the environment
name.
When wishing to locate the nearest SO the BO builds a SO name using
its
own partition and asks the name service for that.
If there is an SO registered under that name then it must be in the
same
partition and all is well. No cross partition calls.
If not, then the BO builds the name using its node and asks the name
service for that.
This means that if there is an SO outside the BO partition but still
on
the same node then this can be used. Again, relatively 'local'.
If neither of these work then the BO has to resort to an environment
wide search.
It may be that this approach could be adapted / adopted; I like it's
ingenuity.

I can not comment on the speed difference because I never tested it.
But, I
will say that we looked at the agent solution at a client sight
before. I
will give the same warning I gave them. If you go the agent direction
you
are now using agents for a purpose that they were not intended. Even
though
it technically works, as soon as you start using a piece of
functionality in
a way the developer did not intend it to be used you run the risk of
forward
compatibility problems. By this I mean, since agents were not
originally
intended to be used to look up service / anchored object references,
it may
not work in the future because it is not likely to be given
consideration in
any future design.
As we all know, programmers are always stretching the bounds of the
tools
they use and you may have a good reason (i.e. performance). I just
wanted to
let you know the possible risk.
One final note on a limitation of using system agents to obtain
references
to anchored objects. You can not access agents across environments.
So, if
you have connected environments and need to get references to services
in
another environment for fail-over or whatever, you will not be able to
do it
with agents.
Just some thoughts!

The problem with dynamic binding is that in this case you have to keep
the reference to the service object somewhere. You don't want to call
"bindObject" every time you need to use this service object, "bind" is
a
time-consuming operation, even on the same partition. Keeping
reference
could be undesirable if your object could be moved across partitions
(e.g. business object).
The alternative solution is to use agents. You can create custom
agent,
make it a subagent of an active partition agent and use it as a
placeholder for whatever service you need. "FindSubAgent" works much
faster than "bindObject", we verified that and agent is "user-visible"
by its nature.

I actually determined it through testing. In my case I did not want
this to
happen and was trying to determine why it was happing. It makes sense
if
you think about it. Forte is trying to avoid making a remote method
invocation if it can.
Now, for anything more complex than looking locally first and if none
is
found give me any remote instance you can find, you will need to do
more
work. Using a naming scheme like Jez suggests below works well.

there's a mechanism used within SCAFFOLDS that allows the
location of the 'nearest' SO when more than one is available.
It involves registering each duplicated SO under three dynamically
built
names. The names include the partition, the node or the environment
name.
When wishing to locate the nearest SO the BO builds a SO name using
its
own partition and asks the name service for that.
If there is an SO registered under that name then it must be in the
same
partition and all is well. No cross partition calls.
If not, then the BO builds the name using its node and asks the name
service for that.
This means that if there is an SO outside the BO partition but still
on
the same node then this can be used. Again, relatively 'local'.
If neither of these work then the BO has to resort to an environment
wide search.
It may be that this approach could be adapted / adopted; I like it's
ingenuity.

I looked at the documentation for ObjectLocationManager and on page
327
of the Framework Library and AppletSupport Library Guide indescribing
the BindObject method Forte says:
"The name service allows more than one anchored object (from
different
partitions) to be registered in the name service under the same
registration name. When you invoke the BindObject method with a

for a name that has duplicate registration entries, the BindObject
method finds an entry corresponding to an active partition, skipping
any
entries that do not. If no such active partition is found, or if the

My question is: How did you discover that in the case of duplicate
registrations the naming service will return the local object if one
exists? This is not apparent from the documentation I have quoted.
Is
it documented elsewhere? Or did you determine it empirically?

First I will start by saying that this can be done by using named
anchored
objects and registering them yourself in the name service. There is
documentation on how to do this. And by default you will get mostof
the
behavior you desire. When you do a lookup in the name service
(BindObject
method) it will first look in the local partition and see if thereis
a
local copy and give you that copy. By anchoring the object and
manually
registering it in the name service you are programmatically creating
your
own SO without defining it as such in the development environment.
BTW
in
response to your item number 1. This should be the case there as
well.
If
your "mobile" object is in the same partition where the serviceobject
he is
calling resides, you should get a handle to the local instance ofthe
service object.
Here is the catch, if you make a bind object call and there is no
local
copy
you will get a handle to a remote copy but you can not be sure which
one!
It end ups as more or less a random selection. Off the top of myhead
and
without going to the doc, I am pretty sure that when you register an
anchored object you can not limit it's visibility to "User".

More than once, I have wished that Forte allowed you to place named
objects with the same name in more than one partition. There aretwo
situations in which this seems desirable:
1) Objects that are not distributed, but are mobile (passed by value

Release all anchored objects at once

Dear All, I want to release an all anchored objects from my file. All anchors are created inside the table. I am using InDesign CS4.
I have a file for 4 pages which is containing more than 150 images to be released from anchored. That images should be placed in the same place. Only need to release. I want to do this for more than 100 files (400 pgs. it may increase in future). I tried this in Search/replace option using Object, but only i can able to find using custom option in the anchor options panel, not able to relase using search and replace.
Please help me ASAP.

CS3 - Auto Anchored objects

Hi all,
I would like to speed up my workflow enormously. I have a very repetitive thing that I need to speed up somehow...
I receive supplied text that requires formatting. I have just about everything automated except inserting graphics into certain locations. I currently insert an object as an anchored object one by one wherever it needs to be put..
The things is, all the graphic objects are identical (the exact same file), and they appear hundreds of time throughout the document.
The objects are to all behave exactly the same way so a style could be set up - it's just the matter of placing the object hundreds of times every time I get new text to update the file with. So at the moment, I am spending way way way too much time individually placing each object one by one.
I'm not a highly experienced ID user, so I'm hoping I'm just missing something here. I've scoured tutorials and help and the web to no avail. Hence my post here.
Currently, they put the text code "grphc" where they want the little picture in the text supplied to me. I then do a search for "grphc" in the find function. It finds it, I then select this code and place the inline object. I then go back to the find function to show me the next code. It takes me straight to it, I then repeat the process of selecting the text code, place the object, find the next code, select the code, place the object, find the next code, select the text, place the object, find the next code, select it, place the thing, find the next, select it, place it... and so on and so on till my brain hurts through a very very repetitive operation. It hurts!.
Please help me automate this very time consuming and brain numbing repetitive action...
Like I said, I'm not a heavily experienced user of InDesign, so I'm hoping that I am simply missing something. (I can only hope)
I'm hoping that a very easy, almost 'one click' fix can replace the special code with this little grpahic.
I mean, I can find all occurrences of a given text in the document and replace it all in one hit with some other text, but it seems to not allow to replace text with a graphic.
please help. even if the answer is in front of my face & cannot see it..

I must admit though, I am surprised that with the amount of power ID has with this Find/Replace function that it doesn't have the ability to find and replace with a graphic.
Maybe I should put a wish list to ID to add this find text and replace with an object feature...

CS4 Linking Text Boxes Together in Anchored Objects?

Hi. Using InDesign CS4 I have a Anchored Object that I would like to link part of it to the next one in the text frame. Example: I have grouped together a text box, a box with a placed UPC from Illustrator and another text box stacked on top of each other, all lined up. I group this and place it in a text box so I can set these at different places along a 29" document. When I have overset text, in the top box for example, I see the + sign but can't grab it to try to link the text to the next text box in the Anchored or grouped object. All I can do it change the size of the box - even when holding down the command key on the Mac with the text too enabled. I am setting it up this way so all three boxes stay together when positioning on pages. I have multiple rows of these so it makes it easier to modify. If I take the grouped set out of the text box so it's by itself I can grab the overset text. I am trying to link text boxes so it's easier and faster to flow in text from another program. Thanks.

OK, I will try to get the whole page later. I want to keep what you see in the screen shot - one of the grouped objects - together as it goes across the page. So the 9232554 text and all bellow that would stay grouped together when I tab it over to line up to a certain spot on the page. This is placed in a text box that runs horizonal on the page, about 28" across. I also wanted to link the 9232554 box to the 9232729 box which is just a duplicate of the group of text and UPC code before it. But from what you say, and what I tried to do, I can't. Even when all the anchored object groups are in the same long text thread. I tried not grouping each section - the UPC code sandwiched by the text boxes, but could not place them in the long text box when not grouped togther.
I wanted to flow in the text to all 14 of these grouped or anchored objects, say all top boxes, in one 'paste' instead of doing each one at a time but keeping the 3 elements you see togther at all times.

Hi,
Somehow I think my question is quite simple to answer, but I've run out of ideas right now...
Is it possible to place text in an anchord object and remove it from it's current story in one action? The words are all labeled (xml), but they need to be placed outside the textframe they are in.
Right now the only way I see that happening is to copy-paste every single word in it's anchored object (which is also placed on the right place by hand...)
I hope you can help me! Anyhow, thanks for any suggestion...
