Ancient 12" iBook question

I have an ancient 12" iBook which I would like to put to use running Power PC software but could do with  bigger screen. The iBook has a ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 with 32MB of DDR SDRAM and Video mirroring supports VGA video out to an external display.
Can anyone suggest the size of monitor this will support.
Thanks

Please let us know more about your iBook. Which exact model is it? You can choose from this list:

Which version of the OS is it running? I'm guessing that you mean it has 32 MB of VRAM?

  • IBook questions from a total noob.

Well, greetings to all of you! I am the most proud owner of an iBook "Snow" Dual USB, 500 mhz, 320mb RAM, 10gb HDD. I won this on eBay 3 weeks ago for $15 with a supposedly dead HDD and since it was local there was no shipping charges! Since I'm actually using it to type this, the hard drive is in fact fine, a bit small but fine. There is no Airport Card, but I see from the antenna it is possible to put one in there. Anyway, my question has probably been asked a billion times, but from what I read nobody has an explanation just a simple "No". Obviously I want to upgrade the Hard Drive, BUT, if I'm going to be in there anyway I want to put a combo drive in. However, I've seen 700-900mhz Logic Boards on eBay, not cheap but not outrageous either. I want to swap out the old 500mhz one with a 700-900mhz replacement. The Form factor is the same, all the screw holes are identical, other then the possible display incompatibility I see no reason why it can't be done. Please, explain to me, in vast detail, why this cannot be done and cannot work. Other then the amount of time....I see no issues. Thank you for your' time, I look forward to the responses! =^)

See now we're getting somewhere, obviously there's more to it then just swapping out the Logic Board and having it just work. Yet apparently it can be done. Of course, it would seem to be more of an annoyance then it is worth, but I figured to try and squeeze a bit more juice from this apple...ha ha ha. I had figured if I was going to have it apart to put in a replacement Hard Drive, then why not just go ahead and go for the full monty, right? I suppose a stick of 512mb RAM and a larger, faster spinning hard drive will be all I'll be doing to this machine. The simple fact that I only paid $15 for the unit and $35.00 for the OS X 10.3 Panther CD's and it works has me thrilled, really! It is my first Apple computer and I love being able to mess around with it, but I'm quickly becoming aware of the severity of it's limitations. Many of the applications I see require either OS X 10.4 Tiger, or it'll work with Panther but I need a G4 800mhz cpu....etc, etc, etc. I guess it's hard to take on the world when one is only 3 feet tall, figuratively speaking. But I'm glad to have an Apple computer and I'm only sorry I wasted so much time with Windows PC's and that I shelled out for Crappy VISTA and went back to XP!!!! Grrr.

  • PDF, iPad, and iBooks question

I seem to be able to import any PDF into itunes, but only certain ones will let me drag them onto my iPad for iBooks.  What are the restrictions that let me copy some but not others?

I can't answer your question directly but you might wish to try the (free) Adobe Reader app.  It's never given me any trouble.

  • Ahem 'New' iBook questions

Picked up my first Apple computer, a 466mhz Graphite iBook w/320mb RAM and that oh so roomy 10gb HD. And of course, I have a couple of questions:
This is my first experience with OS X and it came with 10.3 installed. In the interest of freeing up some HD space can I nuke the OS9 support that I'm finding in the application folders? Or is it vitally important for something and I should hang on to it for whatever reason? Currently i've got about 2.3gb free on the HD and would like to expand that a bit. I realize that changing out the HD in the future will be a major PITA if it comes to that. While I'm at anything else that can go? I got rid of iTunes, bluetooth support programs and Garageband because I have no use for them, but i'm not sure what else can be jettisoned.
Second, while the machine appears to be fully functional the graphite rubber colored bits, especially on the bottom of the machine are pretty chewed up. Is it possible to just find the 'skin' somewhere, remove the rest of the rubber with a gentle solvent and re-apply? I'm pretty sure this unit used to be used in an elementary school and it shows...

OS 9 isn't a necessity unless you need to run OS 9 applications. Otherwise you can delete these folders:
"System Folder" (not to be confused with the folder named "System.")
    "Applications (Mac OS 9)"
    "Documentation"
This might free up around 1 GB or so of space on the hard drive. However, a 10 GB hard drive is too small for OS X. 20 GBs would be the practical minimum. You need to have at least 8-10 GBs of free space on the hard drive, although it is possible to have as little as 3 GBs free but any less is a potential problem.
Panther requires a minimum of 128 MBs of RAM, but from a practical usage viewpoint 512 MBs is much better. 320 MBs is a practical minimum. Without a lot of RAM the OS will be slower and more sluggish.
Bear in mind that an iBook was not designed to run OS X, so don't expect great performance.

  • G4 ibook question mark folder on startup

Put a logic board and new hard drive in g4 1.33 12inch ibook.  Trying to load tiger ,I get a folder with a question mark on the screen.  What does that mean ?

Is it 10.4.0? If so, it's too early to work.
Do you have the original system discs that came with the iBook when it was new? It should include Mac OS X 10.4.2.

  • IBook questions

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum. I'm a fairly recent Logic Pro 7.1 user. I run it on an eMac with a 1 gig of RAM, and it works wonderfully.
I'm considering getting a 12 inch iBook. My intention would be to use it mainly for sequencing when I'm away from home, so I probably wouldn't be using a ton of heavy duty plug-ins at once. I figure I can freeze tracks, and do more heavy duty processing at home.
    Here are my questions.
    1. To run my copy of Logic and both machines, would I just need to move the USB key from computer to computer?
    2. How would I open up a song started in one computer on the other computer? Would I need to burn the file to a CD? Can I use one of those USB memory sticks?
Thanks in advance for the help,
    John

    hi,
yes you can have both desktop and laptop use logic , just plug in the XSKey into the one you want to use
there are many ways to transfer your logic songs files between computers. CD, usb memory stick, usb or firewire external hard drive, set up network using ethernet or wireless through airport, or ?. To do large files quickly, I start my laptop holding down the T (target drive) on the keyboard which turns the computer into a firewire hard drive that I can just hook up via firewire to my desktop and just drag my files over to it.

  • Really Important iBooks Question

I publsihed my iBook text book. How come I cant see it in the iBook store? I only see 8 textbooks from the 3 announced companies. Also I don't see textbooks from anyone else either. Anyone know why? Is apple not accepting third part books?

You are not speaking to apple here and nobody can answer your question.  Please stop posting it over and over again.

  • Odd iBook question - g4 board in a g3 case?

After dealing with another logic board failure on my iBook g3, I have reached the point of wondering if I should avoid the g3 boards entirely and go with an iBook g4 board this time.
Does anyone know if the logic board from a 12" iBook g4 will physically fit into the case of my 12" iBook g3? And what about all the other internal components, would they be compatible with a g4 board, or would they all have to be replaced as well?

After more than six years in the Apple iBook Discussions (anyone who was here before August 25, 2000 got that "join" date because of a Discussions software update), starting, myself, with a 300MHz Tangerine iBook and then a 500MHz Dual USB iBook and making approximately 10,000 posts in this Dual USB iBook "usage" forum here, I have never, ever heard of anyone who has successfully done that. If I were you, I would listen to Ronda's advice...

  • Okay I think I have it!- the final ibook question from yours truly!

I have finally configured my ibook to just the way I want it excluding one crucial thing: Memory. I know the more memory you have, the more apps you can run at once. But the most apps I would be running at once would be 2 or 3. Would someone out there with a 12 inch ibook(1.33 GHz PowerPC G4, 512MB DDR333 SDRAM built-in, 40 or 60 GB hard drive) click on 2 or 3 apps and see if they all run confortably at once.
    Thanks-
    You guys are great!

    Hi Tech,
It sounds like to me you will be fine if you want to stick with the installed RAM. I wouldn't worry about space until later. I personally use an external hard drive for both my iTunes and iPhoto libraries (I have over 40Gb of just iTunes music). You don't have to order the RAM now, you can always get it later and install it yourself. I suggest buying it when you order because Apple puts it in; less risk of something going wrong.
    Options about external hard drives:
I suggest anything from LaCie, SmartDisk, or Western Digital
I personally recommend theLaCie D2 Hard Drive Extreme w/ Triple Interface, SmartDisk CrossFire, or the WD Dual Option.
I use a SmartDisk CrossFire for both my iTunes library as well as my iPhoto library. If you need help moving your iTunes library you might want to look at Knowledge Base Document #301748 explains How to Move Your iTunes Library.

  • Another iBook question

OK, I am in the process of getting ahold of a white 500mhz G3 iBook. Does anyone know.. will the power adapter from a 300mhz clamshell work with the 500mhz white model? Are they interchangeable?
On the back of the charger his is the information it lists.
AC Adapter for Apple iBook and Powerbook G3 series, Part No. M7332

Some of the first model iBook G3 500MHz white models shipped with the
'yo-yo' AC adapter, and shortly thereafter, it seemed the offered replacement
of similar specs was a white cube model. The white cube power adapter has
the familiar illuminated power plug for the computer; the old yo-yo did not.
And some of those yo-yo models had different sized power-out ends; so not
all would interchange on the computer end of the cable. Some may also have
different output power. I had both kinds of power adapters, so I inspected them
My early iBook G3 500MHz (May 2001) had the custom moulded styrofoam
packing it shipped with, and the location in the original box was for a yo-yo...
The plug tip for that adapter was correct, same as the newer has one now.
{So that is what I sold mine with, since it still worked fine and did not overheat.
    In the box, with original software, book, & with later upgrade OS install discs.}
However, those all have part numbers on them and there had been a Support
page at Apple's site showing those old adapters. It was there 4 years ago...
The more recent page does not show the old early 'yo-yo' original equipment.
And the newer design has the illuminated DC-out tip, with different shape.
You could probably find a working example of the white 45/65w adapter inexpensively.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1565?viewlocale=en_US
So, to get and use a known good 'correct part number' would be the best idea.
I'm always on the look-out for a spare adapter, cables, cords, USB keyboards, s/w
    and other stuff. And I've found the 65w adapter in clean working condition, used;
for as little as $3.50 more than once. The adapter works best with their long cord.
The early 45w adapter (white) uses 2-prong plug AC cord; later they went 3-prong.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Ancient and Archived Questions

Is there a way to simply 'drop' a question? I have two questions that are "unresolved" basically because no answer has been forthcoming from the collective so I can't mark them as "answered", but I can't delete them from my list of "unresolved" questions.
Perhaps a third alternative to 'helpful' and 'solved' being 'abandoned'?

    G'day Sue,
Au contraire, you can mark the question as 'Answered' without nominating a Solved or Helpful response and thereby get it off the list of unresolved questions.
I do agree though, the facility to mark a post as 'Abandoned' or something similar would be in keeping with the spirit of points mendicants.
    Have fun!

  • Itunes for ibook question

hey all im new to apple got a ibook g4 10.4.11 for free and use it to familarize myself comming from windows os and like it very much I have an Iphone 4s and that prompted the change just tring to hook itunes up to this setup and sync it is this doable or am i sol till i comit to mving forward! it will load pitures from phone but thats it !!
thanks in advance any help with this would be great !!!

An older Mac is not the best model to introduce yourself to Macs.  Like anything old it will need coddling and patience to use.  It will not work fast, you will have problems finding software and accessories for it.  It's like buying a 1960s car.  Great if you have the patience to work with it and you love hunting for parts and do not want to drive 75 mph on the freeway.  Not so great if you want efficient, relatively care-free transportation.  It's not so much a maintenance issue with the old computers but simply the world is moving beyond what they are capable of doing.
It also will not work well (if at all) with your iPhone.  Read very carefully the system requirements for the iPhone (printed in microscopic medium gray print on the side of a light gray box ).  If this is a brand new phone you may possibly absolutely need the newest iTunes version which will not run on the ibook.
Oh, I have a 10 year old computer with 10.4.11, a 32 year old car that does 65 mph maximum and I have to hunt acrosss the country for spare parts, a 103 year old house, and a 18 year old cat.  We have an iPhone4s which will not work with our computer but we don't use those features.  If that's you, go for it.

  • IBook Question

    Hi all,
It has become apparent to me, like im sure it has to many others that apple have released G5 Power Macs, and most recently the G5 iMac.
I am looking to get a portable ibook at some stage (most likely the 15"). At the moment I have noticed that Apple are now offering 512 MB memory, rather than the standard 256MB, in addition to built in Blue Tooth 2.0 and the Super Drive.
However, I was wondering if any one knew if a iBook G5 release is imminent, I have had mixed opinions on this?
    Thanks

If I may add my opinion here? I totally agree with John, I bought my iBook last month and just can't imagine being any happier with anything that 'might' be on the horizon. I'll cross that bridge in 3 years (when my current warranty expires)! I do have one regret concerning my iBook though - the fact that I didn't purchase it SOONER! So, Anand, get to your nearest Apple store and get that iBook, I know you'll be glad you did :)! Don...
