This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. My husbands iphone 4 is refusing to restore or really do anything since he tried to update it to the new operating system. It just alternates between the apple sign, and the thinking circle. I updated mine on the computer right before he tried so we know its not the computer settings. I updated itunes and went through the trouble shooting guides. It was not connecting with itunes at all so I updated the device connector. Now it will connect sometimes as an unknown iphone but will not let me restore it and says it is a (-1) error. What should I do? Apple support was supposed to call an hour ago and still hasnt called.

I had the same problem, I connected to a different computer that had itunes. It also was oneI never connected to before. I held the power botton and homebutton till it showed up connect to itunes. I opened up it tunes and it said my phone needed a phone software update, i folled the prompt and set it up as a new phone. Use Device Firmware Mode...
1.     Turn off your ipod To do this, hold the home and sleep buttons for 10 seconds, ignore slide to power off message.
2.     Release the power button when you see the apple logo (keep holding the home button)
3.     Keep holding until you see a message.
Now restore from a backup!
Alternatively you can wait!

Try and force iPod into Recovery Mode:
1. Turn off iPod
2. Connect USB cable to computer; leave the other end alone
3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPod
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
5. Release the Home button
6. Open iTune
7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode"
8. Use iTune to restore iPod
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad

I went to get all my contacts and backup from my old phone onto my new phone and it wont let me because my new phone is only ios4 and my backup from my old phone was in ios5. Bottom line is you CANNOT restore to a phone from a backup that has a more recent iOS which is what you're trying to do. Just can't be done.

When I try to connect to itunes, It states ''The sim card of this phone is PIN locked - please enter the PIN code of your SIM card and connect again to iTunes" however I don't have the option to enter the Pin code on my phone as on my phone screen it states "your iphone could not be activated because the activation server is temporaily unavailable"

You'll need to connect it to the iTunes library you normally sync it with and restore it. If iTunes asks you for this passcode before it will let you proceed, connect the iPod to iTunes in recovery mode instead using the instructions in this Apple support document.

I have the same problem, first the usb itunes screen (pic above) showed up randomly. The computer recognized it at first, saying it was in recovery mode, blah blah. I tried to take it out of recovery mode, but the moment it shut off, the apple logo appeared and didn't go away. This kept happening, so eventually, I chose to 'restore' in itunes. It began to download and install this ipod software update (I'm pretty sure I already had the update). After that, I got this wierd error message, saying I couldn't restore. The ipod, which had the apple logo since the first restore, was then "unidentified" by itunes, and it dissapeared off of the devices list. (Note I did not even touch the cable, and it wasn't syncing anyways) I tried some other ipod USB's, done the recovery mode thing about 10 times, but no avail. Every time I try to do the recovery mode, the screen shuts off for about a second, then the apple logo appears and stays there until I try to recover it again. I have tried almost everything; plugging it back into the computer, plugging it into another computer that it has been recognized on before (which by the way is a mac). I've restarted the computer a number of times, checked for updates for itunes, and searched the web for solutions, but nothing. This is a 4rth gen 32gb ipod.

Your system is missing a couple DLLs that LR needs, but the fix at Adobe is to copy them to the LR folder which gets replaced for each install, so you have to redo it after each LR install. It would be worth documenting the process and saving the DLLs so you don’t have to ask about it each time:

You might also use the AIO210 program to add them as detailed in this YouTube video—maybe this is a more permanent fix, but since the files are from media-fire be very careful about what you do so as not to install a virus on your computer.
I’d scan the downloaded ZIP you download with whatever virus and internet security software you have and don’t be fooled by extraneous popups you might see during the download process. I was able to download the aio210.zip after authorizing one Captcha window and closed at least one bogus popup trying to get me to install other software.
