IChat vs. Skype . . . and the winner is . . .

. . . Skype. Much as I don't like to admit that.
Here's the deal.
I live in California and am a Mac user. My mother lives in Arizona and is a Mac user. I can iChat with her from my home. I can Skype with her from my home. I'm on travel in the UK and can iChat with her. I can also Skype with her.
While on travel I've not been able to iChat with my family back in California (so and so didn't respond is the iChat error no matter who calls who, but (as you can guess) I can Skype with them.
My father lives in Illinois and is a Mac user. I can't iChat with him for the life of me, even after endlessly re-configuring this and that and everything else on his end and mine. He can iChat with other Mac users he knows. I can Skype with him.
My sister lives in Illinois and is a PC/Trillian Pro user. I can iChat/Trillian Pro with her (after she opened the proper ports in her firewall) but the picture quality is poor. I can Skype with her and the picture quality is better.
My mother can iChat/Trillian Pro with my sister but the picture is poor. My mother can Skype with my sister and the picture is better.
I'm a big fan of Apple and iChat, but everything considered, Skype seems to be a better product. The picture and sound quality seem to be a push at best, and in favor of Skype at worst (this from the various distance sessions and severl in home from laptop to laptop tests and comparisons). The ease and stability of connections are hugely in favor of Skype. iChat seems to be about fifty percent successfull when I go on travel. Skype has been one hundred percent successfull.
The Apple to PC connection is also much easier with Skype, which is especially important when it comes to video chatting with family members who are baby boomers and not to most technologically savy people and many of whom use PCs.
Unless iChat gets a lot better, I'm afraid I'll be Skyping all the time from now on.

Well, we're just users like you. Nobody here works for Apple (or at least admits it). So we can't get the good folks at Apple (a company I've patronized since the days of the Mac B&W Classic computer myself) to do anything.
One thing to bear in mind, that with Skype, I seem to recall reading fairly recently that CERN had forbidden its use on their network because of an obscurely worded clause in skype's software license agreement that said that by using their product, they could use your computer as a relay node. If memory serves me correctly, this article said that in CERN's case, they had megabandwidth, so the entire CERN network was turning into a skype relay node. You can read more about this by googling "Skype security" or maybe "Skype security flaw" or maybe "Skype security hole"or maybe "Skype CERN." I was googling "Skype security {and maybe other search terms}" when I found the article, with explanation of, and link to, skype license agreement. That said, however, a lot of people have posted here that skype more than meets their needs and worked straight out of the box when iChat didn't. And it's hard to argue with success.
As you can imagine, what with the wide variation in possible network architectures and equipment complement both at the end-user level and with a myriad of policies and architectures of their ISPs, it can be a difficult task to troubleshoot people's problems via a message board. And some things like policies and architectures of ISPs are out of anyone's control here to work around. And some folks just get frustrated by the questions that are asked, in order to figure out how they're set up, and you never hear back from them again. But all that aside, you have to admit, the dedicated folks that volunteer their time and effort here do a fantastic job of doing just that. So if you'd like to try to get your iChat up and running, I'm sure that the smart folks hanging out here are more than willing to give you the individual attention to try to do just that.

Ok, I'm still tryin'. Here's what I want to do with my Mac. I want to make a DVD to view on a standard Sony TV played with a Sony DVD player. I want it to look GOOD. No image flicker AND NO SOFT Images !

They use expensive, multi-pass hardware encoders (which includes the necessary low-pass filters to eliminate interlace flicker effects).

Here we go again. Sharpness that causes interlacing flicker problems is not useful sharpness.
All digital images have high-frequency information removed before capture. Take a look at the Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyquist–Shannonsamplingtheorem. To include such sharpness information in the capture process would cause severe artifacts in the resultant digital image.
First and foremost, NTSC/PAL TV are NOT a 'sharp' systems by today's computer display standards - remember NTSC has less than 640x480 pixel resolution and is interlaced. Sharpness information that causes a difference in the odd field and even field that make up a complete interlaced frame image will cause flicker as the two fields switch back and forth. The ONLY way to eliminate the flicker is to eliminate the 'problem' sharpness. PERIOD
If you can't make your images look sharp and without flicker as a slide show, why bother with it in the first place ?
I think you are dealing with the issue on a 'gut' level - 'loss of sharpness is bad'. But with digital images, this isn't realy true. Image sharpness is only useful of it can be accurately reproduced in the final digital image.
I don't know what else to tell you. There isn't any 'magic bullet'. As I told you earlier, I liked the results I achieved with some slideshows put together with FotoMagico better than some slideshows I put together with iMovie or iDVD. Other people like Photo to Movie. However, still image slideshows put together with either of these two non-Apple applications will still exhibit interlace flicker. There is no free lunch when we are dealing with an interlaced system!
Things will only get better when we no longer have to deal with interlaced video images. Sorry.

BBConnect Vs MFE....and the winner is??!!

After using both BB Connect [albeit for a few hours] and MFE [for years], i somehow tend to favour MFE for the followin reasons
BB Connect
+ves - OTA Sync to start with, real time push mail, Address look up relatively quick, OOO still works unlike the MFE 2.5 and i get to see sent items on my server too!!
-Ves - Licence fee [which means u need approvals at office to activate and use], Keeps the GPRS always on and hence data cost of the carrier can go up[fortunately, my company pays for it !! :-)]No Task Sync, Slows down the app considerably than MFE if >25 emails exist in inbox !!

+ves - The apps is free !!, easy to install and use, task sync available, i can choose the sync frequency, frequent updates ensure bug fixes, with the corp directory option available,beats the living day light out of BB Connect and NOKIA supports it which means firmware updates etc., would have more relevance!!
-Ves - stability is still an issue, some features like OOO still doesnt work for me isnpite of Exchange 2007 usage, MFE 2.5.5 wiped out my SMS inbox and folders !! meaning a firmware-software "talking issues"

On the other hand, not everybody is using Microsoft Exchange Server (Mail for Exchange doesn't work without it), while BB Connect can be used even by individuals with free e-mail addresses, such as Gmail and Yahoo!Mail, through the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS). So, I put a forwarding address for all my work emails to a free Gmail address and voila, I have my work email pushed without using BlackBerry Enterprise Solution (BES).

A few hours ago I was reading a question from someone who is thinking of getting a Canon HV20 and as I knew nothing about it I googled its name.
The link I got was to Amazon who were selling it incredibly cheaply (£545) and under the price were the words, "Want guaranteed delivery by 1pm Wednesday, February 20? Order it in the next 8 hours and 52 minutes.................. "
I suddenly remembered that date was my birthday !
Was this some omen telling me to part with my cash ?
I also looked at a comprehensive review which seemed to sing its praises - Canon HV20
So if I did decide to get it, would it work well on FCE/FCP ? No capture problems - after all it is a Canon and we know about their FW implementation ?
In short, would it be a good camera for shooting video and editing with FCE/FCP ?

I want to merge 2 accounts using Edit -> Merge Records.
However, I don't want one of the related BCs (let's say contacts) to be merged to the Winner. I only want to transfer the rest like activities, opportunities etc. How do I exclude a child BC from the record merge?
Should be fairly easy, but I can't find any related information.

I have the similar problem. I have ORA- in the Critical threshold and I just want to exclude ORA-00060 from critcial threshold. What will be the syntax for that? I do not want to filter it. I still want to recieve it as warning.

I am trying to restore my catalog having previously done a back up to an external hard drive and subsequently an incremental backup. I am using Photoshop Elements 11 and the only option given in the restore procedure is to open a .tly file.

I have done this but now the restore function is asking for yet another file, which i assume to be the original back up, but that is the only .tly file since the only other relevant file appears to be called catalog.buc but that is just not visible when using the restore function? How do I continue from here with this restoration of my catalog?

A backup (full or incremental) is a folder, not a file. It contains renamed pictures file copies as well a copies of the files and subfolders of the original catalog. The catalog.buc is a renamed copy of the database of your original catalog while the backup.tly. That backup.tly file contains the information to restore the renamed pictures where you decide, the original location or a new custom one. You can't do anything with the backup yourself, only the restore process can do the job if it finds the backup.tly file. In the case of an incremental backup, you have to tell the restore process where to find the incremental backup folder; it finds the backup.tly file in that folder and finds what is to restore there; then it asks you for the previous backup folder (in your case the full backup); you then browse to that full backup folder so that the restore process can find find the backup.tly there; the restore then deals with the rest of the files to restore.
