Android Notifications S.O.S

Hi at all!
I developed an iOS and Android App using Flash professional CS6.
On iOS I've really quickly configured PUSH notifications and I'm sending without problems notifications from an RSS Feed using Urban AirShip. But now I'm trying to do the same on Android and I'm so lost!
I tried some ANE's on the web but I haven't found any that is compatible with urban airship. How do I use Urban Airship on Android using Adobe AIR?
Alternatively, how can I in a manner as simple as it is possible to send notifications on Android from an RSS feed?
Thank you. Best regards.

Hi mozzillonextlevel
I have made an Android UrbanAirship ANE for the app which was released jesterday.
Because I had not much time to develop this ANE I implemented just the basic functionality of UA. If one uses this ANE in his app, notifications are show in the notification bar and when the user clicks the notification the app will opened.
I hope to find the time soon to add more features to the ANE and make it publicly available.
If the basic functionality is currently enough for your app just drop me a line and I will send the ANE over to you.

• Facebook for Android "notifications" error

Forgive me if this has been asked already (searched forums and didn't find anything similar). I am a first time user of the HTC Droid Incredible. I have got everything setup well but Facebook for Android is givning me a error on just Notifications. When I enter the app, everything else loads fine but notifications fail to load and give me an error, "Socket Not Connected". I can have 100% signal strength and still gives this error. Sync is on (not sure if that matters). Just odd that everything else is up to date and works fine but just notifications fails. Any advice on this error? Thanks in advance.

not sure. but fyi....i don't care for the app so i just use the mobile site (m.facebook.com). it works MUCH better than the app. i just created a shortcut to it and haven't used the app since.

• Android Notification Icon Missing From Captive Build

Hey all,
We've finished development on an iOS & Android game which shaped up to a rather nice result thanks to the great SDKs available to us from Adobe
And after breaking our heads on implementing a cross-platform NativeExtension for push notifications, we managed to set it all up and get everything connected, running on production servers. We'll do a write-up about that later because documentation on that subject is rather lacking and people who succeeded are somewhat tight-lipped about their solutions.
There's just one thing that's bugging us: the notification icon for Android seems to be missing from the captive build (we're using AIR SDK 3.1) and defaults back to an Adobe AIR logo. This behavior is not seen when building a normal APK file, which makes me think this is something we have no control over and might possibly be a bug in adt.
We've found only one other post on the web about this particular problem:
"Just one small issue though, with flex 4.6 if an app is packaged with the captive Air Runtime, the icon that displays for notifications is the adobe air icon and not the application’s own icon." - http://www.riaspace.com/2011/09/as3c2dm-air-native-extension-to-push-notifications-with-c2 dm/
Thanks in advance!

Could you please open a new bug report on this over at https://bugbase.adobe.com? When adding the bug, please include your sample code or a sample application so we can quickly test this out internally.
Once added, please post back with the URL so that others effected can add their comments and votes. I'll also give the mobile team a heads up.
Thanks

• Email notifications per email account, and bundled together? (former Android user)

Hello there,
I made the switch from an old HTC Android to the new iPhone 5S two weeks ago and the one thing I cannot configure to my liking is email notifications in the notification center. I have multiple email accounts that recieve a moderate volume of emails on most of my accounts per day and need a quick way to view the activity of a given email account, not the app. I currently use two email apps as follows:
Mail - iOS7 native app
x2 Exchange email accounts
x1 Windows Live email account
x1 Yahoo email account
Gmail App
x2 Gmail email accounts
I have configured the notification center to notify me for all but the yahoo email account. The problem I have is that the notificaiton center only shows X number of recent emails (selected in settings) the APP has recieved, and does not say which email account it is, or how many extra emails on top of X that I selected were recieved. My phone is on silent 24/7 and the only vibrates for phone calls and text messages. I will periodically check the notification center throughout the day and use it as a summary of what has happend since the last time I checked.
On my Android, each email account would have two lines in the Android Notification center. The first unread email on an account would use those two lines to tell you the subject line, time recieved, email account, the total number of unread emails, and the app. Once that account gets two or more emails, it simplifies to say the number of new messages, time the last one was recieved, the email account, the total number of unread emails, and the app. What is really nice about that setup is that each email account had two lines in the notification center, no matter what, and at a quick glance I can see which email accounts are really acitve and I probably need to check on. If one email account was really active and I wanted to check on it, I could select the single notification for that account and it would take me to the (already updated) inbox where I can quickly browse to see what all the emails are about. At this point it may sound like it is just different and I just need to get used to the iOS7 interface, but let me share an example where iOS7 lets me down, and Android has done well for the last couple years:
During M-F from 8-6, my two exhange accounts and one of my gmail accounts are the only accounts I care about. One exchange account receieves 5-20 emails per hour, and the other exchange account might recieve 1-5 per day. Only a small percentage of those 5-20 emails need a priority response, but the account that gets 1-5 per day are emails that I need to know about and respond to right away. What happens in the iOS7 notification center is that I may not even see a notification for the email account that gets 1-5 emails per day, and if I do, it only tells me the sender, subject line, and some of the body if I allow more than 2 lines - it does not specify which email account it was sent to. I can choose 1, 5, or 10 emails to be displayed for the Mail App in settings, but the 5-20 emails I recieve can bump the 1 important email from the one account out of the notification center.
Is there a way to configure notifications per email account, and bundle all the recieved emails (by saying "# New Messages" or similar) on a given account into 2-4 lines? My ultimate goal here is to not lose a notification on one account due to the high volume of another, but to also keep them concise enough that I don't need to scroll through a massive list of notifications like one giant inbox.
I would appreciate any tips or advice to configure the notification center better for my use case. Thank you!

Yeah.. I have problems with all apps that have notifications.
Forget the Google Gmail example.. I'll use imo, Groupme, and Facebook as examples.
I see the notifications. But when I open the app, it won't show the newest received messages. It will take a few second before the app would refresh.
With my Android experience, all apps would update with the new information in the background. It appears that even though the apps are running in the background in iOS, the actual app appears to be paused until you reopen the app. That's when the app will refresh with the new information.

• Can't download files on Android from Server 2012 Essentials Remote Web Access

I have two servers, one with Windows Server 2012 Essentials, and the other SBS 2011. Employees like using Remote Web Access to log in from anywhere and have access to shared folders. It works perfect on a Desktop computer, but when they try to
use their Android tablets or phones, and want to download a file (e.g. a PDF) from one of the shared folders on the server, the download fails. When Microsoft was pushing 2012 they said RWA worked great on mobile devices, do I have to set up something
separately to make this happen?
I've completely disabled the firewall, and have ports 80,443,987, and 1723(just to be safe) all forwarded to the server.
I can log into the RWA site on the android, browse files and folders, but when I select a PDF to download, the download shows as if it's starting, shows in my android notification as if its going to start downloading (Shows MobileDownload www.mydomain.com)
but eventually after a few minutes, will time out and show "Download Unsuccessful".
Network connectivity is fine as I can do this on a Windows Desktop PC using any browser (Chrome, Firefox, IE) and successfully download anything I want.
UPDATE: I found this in the event handler when I tried to download something from a mobile device...

Hi,
Before going further, would you please let me confirm something firstly?
Would you please let me know if all Android devices
encounter this same issue? If you download different type files, will still this issue persists? You can upload a small file (such as a text file) to the share folder, then check if Android device can’t download it.
Based on your description, when logon a desktop computer, you will download files via RWA successfully. Please use the user account which logon computer to logon
the Android device, will still fail to download?
Please check if there has enough free space in Android devices that be used to save download.
When this issue occurred, please check the state of Android device in Dashboard. Besides, I suggest you should run the Best Practices Analyzer (BPA) and fix all
it can find. Then monitor the result.
Run the Windows Server 2012 Essentials Best Practices Analyzer

• Does Adobe AIR for Android support C2DM?

Does Adobe AIR for Andoird support the Android Cloud to Device Messaging Framework (C2DM)?
for more information on C2DM see:

It isn't supported right now. It should be supportable (you will have to write native code) in an upcoming release. Same for iOS/Android notifications.

• AIR ANE Notifications

Has anyone tried creating ANE notifications in Flash Pro CS5.5 yet? I'm doing it for android and ios.
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/native-extensions-for-air/extensions/notification.html
other important info comes from:
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/air/build/WS597e5dadb9cc1e0253f7d2fc1311b491071-8000.html
I tried to follow the articles closely but i'm getting this error:
"VerifyError: Error #1014: Class com.adobe.ep.notifications::NotificationManager could not be found."
I've added the swc (the .ane file converted to a swc that came with the article's zip file) to my fla's "actionscript 3.0 settings" library path and set its "link type" to "external". Also, I did the AIR 3.0 overlay in Flash Pro but I don't think that really matters since Flash cannot compile it properly anyway.
Here is my code taken mostly from the article. (probably not the best! i'm no expert.)

To finally bring this into the android emulator, I believe I need to create a working swf with no errors. But of course that is where I'm stuck!
If you look at the files provided for the vibration ANE they have included an actionscript library with the ANE zip files:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/native-extensions-for-air/extensions/vibration.html
Is it possible this is missing from the files for Notifications?
Thanks.

@ brad5151:i hope you get notifications working! keep trying! but i'm afraid its missing code. for the vibration example, there is an additional swc (VibrationActionScriptLibrary.swc) that comes with the ANE. but the notification ANE didn't come with an additional swc. there is a "com" folder, but it only has html help files in it. i think maybe its a mistake or something.
1. I wondered about this. But i`v change extension ane to swc and i imported this to fdt. And I have all classe in it. Imports are corect - without any error. But still I dont know is this corect solution.
@brad5151:changing my code to: public var notificationManager:NotificationManager= new NotificationManager(); as you suggested doesn't help. if you look at the vibration links above, he did the same thing i did. he didn't create a "new Vibration()" until after he tested that it "isSupported".
2. In VibrationActionScriptLibrary.swc You have Vibration class and in this class is "
public static function get isSupported() : Boolean;" this is static method. You invoked to this method like this "Vibration.isSuporrted" (capital V). And You can do this without new vibration. Thats why in vibration extension is ok. But when you check class NotificationManager (com.adobe.ep.notifications) isSupported method isnt static. You have check it like this "notificatin.isSuporrted. (small n)" When You have new declaration after if there is an error.
@brad5151:anyway, i cannot build the project. i get this error now: "1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: NotificationEvent." if i cut out all references to NotificationEvent's, then i get the same error for NotificationManager and Notification.
Check my answer number 1
@brad5151: "i got the exact same error code as you when i published: "Error creating files. An Implementation for native extensions com.adobe.Vibration required by the application was not found for the target platform." - I have this error when I published it directly to my phone :/ Do not know why...
Still I didnt get notification working! I hope I find some time to "play" with it :]
I`m not an expert. I`m still learning. Maybe I`m mistaken (especially in changing ane to swc :] ). Sorry if I`m wrong.

• Android and Mac

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4. I used to have an iPhone 6. I like the feature of forwarding my text messages to my mac... can I do that with my android phone?

I googled it for you- https://www.google.com/search?q=android+sms+on+mac&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
So, yes, it can be done, try some apps and go from there.

• Hello world Native Extension API

Hi all :-)
I am an android expert and I'd really love to create some cool extensions like the android notifications, but since I don't know much about Flex, I have a lot of trouble getting the test vibrator with native extension working.
(http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/native-extensions-for-air/extensions/vibration.html)
My sample is still buggy, it is probably beginner's bug, but I don't see how to fix it yet.
I am surely not the only native guy trying to do this, so I would like to sumarize here all the steps needed to have our first hello world Native Extension API
Install Flex 4.5.1 http://www.adobe.com/go/try_flashbuilder/ and download the Adobe AIR 3.0 RC http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/air3.html as well as the sample files http://download.macromedia.com/pub/developer/air/ane/Vibration.zip
Create a test Flex mobile project.(all the deffault parameters are fine) I'll call it HelloWorldNativeExtension.
(If AIR 3 is not released yet) Do the following to tell Flex builder to use the RC on your test project : http://forums.adobe.com/thread/899921
Unzip the vibration.zip, and go to ready to use extansion.
Go to Project -> Flex buildpath -> Libraries -> Add a new swc. Add the ready to use extension as a library. Then open the extensions properties and change the link type from "bundled with" to "external linkage"
Go to HelloworldNativeExtension-app.xml and in the tag manifestAddition, add : <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.VIBRATE"/>
Write a sample view (as described below)
Run (target platform->android and then chosse to run on a device)
When asked to update the air version, answer yes
Wait a loooong time before it actually start.
Here is my code for the sample view:
In HelloworldNativeExtension.mxml
Use the following code :
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx">
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import com.adobe.nativeExtensions.Vibration;
protected function testButton():void
textArea.text="Before vibration";
var vibe:Vibration;
if (Vibration.isSupported)
vibe = new Vibration();
vibe.vibrate(2000);
textArea.text="After vibration";
]]>
</fx:Script>
<s:Panel title="Exemple MXML" width="330">
<s:layout>
<s:VerticalLayout paddingLeft="15" paddingTop="15" paddingBottom="15" paddingRight="15"/>
</s:layout>
<s:Label x="223" y="173" text="test" id="textArea"/>
<s:Button label="Vibrate" click="testButton()"/>
<s:Label id="result" width="265"/>
</s:Panel>
</s:Application>
Well... so far my project doesn't compile because the library is loaded externally. It compiles fine if I add it as a bundled library, but then the virbrator can't work (External native code have to be loaded externally)
And thus so far I get the errors :

So I'm still trying to figure out what to do, but I am close I think... Very close.

Yes, in fact you are very close
You will have to put an <extensions> tag in app-xml if not already done so:
<extensions>
<extensionID>com.adobe.Vibration</extensionID>
<extensions>
Then since it is FlashBuilder 4.5.1, you will have to package the android application through command line since it requires 1 more parameter -extdir :
adt -package -target apk . . . app.apk app.xml app.swf -extdir extensions
extensions is the directory which contains your .ane file. Checkout http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/articles/extending-air.html#articlecontentAdobe_numberedhe ader_1 for more details.
Thats all. You should be able to run your app now. Let me know if it still doesnt work.
Thanks,

• Known apps that don't notify

List apps that show notifications fine on your phone but do not show the text, or don't show at all, on your SWR30.
I'll start:
Xabber - don't show at all on SWR30

The SWR30 is meant to take Android notifications from the Notification.Builder class and display the notifying app name, title and then message on its screen for any application you add to "Notifications" in the SWR30 Android app. Source applications do not need to know or care about the fact that they're being displayed on an SWR30 - they're simply sending a standard Android notification and the SWR30 Android app is then displaying it on the SWR30.
The problem is that a number of apps using Android notifications do not appear properly on the SWR30.
I would like to document a list and take it to Sony. At the moment all I've seen is a knee-jerk reaction by Sony to fix displaying of WhatsApp notifications - presumably because so many people use it.

• 2.3.4 HELP

After the 2.3.4 update my phone is crap. You have to manually update to get emails, g talk does not connect any longer, connection seems worse. I know this has been discussed before, but WHEN WILL VERIZON GIVE A FIX FOR THIS? I have been on the phone troubleshooting with verizon and sony and all they want me to do is factory reset, which does not fix the issue. The issue is with the software update. VERIZON PLEASE RESPOND or give me a new phone without this crappy update. This is horrible customer service, I have been a Verizon user for I believe 10+ years and this is how they treat us. I am fed up....

I also noticed this issue with the 2.3.4 OTA, and with the new baseband, reception seems more sporadic and it takes forever for the phone to change the data connection state from off to on and vice versa. Also, apps don't get automatically pushed to my phone anymore through the google play website on top of google voice not working.
From what I've heard, google uses the same server for nearly everything as far as android notifications/pushing, like gmail, voice, market, sync; if you can't connect to voice it means everything else probably won't work automatically either. Originally when the 2.3.4 update was first flashed to my phone, sync worked fine, but then it stalls and times out, just like voice.
This is unacceptable, this is basically the nail in the coffin for this phone unless you use custom roms/kernels, the only reason I installed this update was for the 720p video recording and "performance enhancements", which seem fine, but they broke other stuff that shouldn't have been changed in the first place, not to mention they added more bloat. It's like verizon WANTS this phone to disappear. I dunno, I've enjoyed this phone a lot, but verizon, on the other hand, is insufferable. I might take the plunge and unlock my bootloader, or I might go back to the 2.3.3 image that, you know, actually has working framework.
tl;dr I mad. It took them nearly a year to release this garbage ota update.

Please note : As soon as I see this tried invoking the csmanagementstore replication and got to know my edge server is not up to date - I am sure this has no relation with push this is for getting the changes informed to edge server,
Everything works normal with no issues apart from this,
Seeking your valuable advice here,
Thanks

Nelson N Exchange 2003|2007|2010

Hi Nelson,
To better understand the issue, I would like to collect the following information.
1. Have you added the new hosting provider, Microsoft Lync Online, and then set up hosting provider federation between your organization and Lync Online ?
Configuring for push notifications in Lync Server 2013
2. Have you installed the new root certificate?
Lync Servers currently use the GTE CyberTrust Global Root and beginning on June 1st, 2013 will migrate to the Baltimore CyberTrust Root. The
migration of Lync Online Service to use the new Baltimore trusted root Certificate Authority is planned during May 2013. As of June 1st 2013,
all of our servers including the Lync Push Notifications Clearing House Service will be on Baltimore certs only. So please ensure that your Lync Server deployments have been updated to trust the Baltimore Root before that.
http://blogs.technet.com/b/lync/archive/2013/05/02/lync-mobile-push-notifications.aspx
In addition, it is recommend to update the Lync servers to the lasted version.
Best regards,
Eric

• Does anyone know of an app or way to recieve a text message notification from an android phone to my iPad - same wireless carrier

Is there a way for my android obsessed brother to send me a text and I can receive notification on my iPad (which is near me more than my iPhone). It seems like it should be 'easy' because we share the same carrier (and family plan), and my iPhone number is linked to my profile (ie FaceTime, iMessage, etc.). Any ideas? Maybe an app work-around?
Thanks All!!

SMS uses the voice channel.
iPads do not connect to the voice channel and do not do SMS.
You can download apps like text+ that use their server to receive SMS messages.

• Android devices not getting push notifications after a while

We have just installed a new Exchange 2013 setup and started to move mailboxes across. Users that have Android devices though are noticing that push notifications are not reaching them and checking in the ECP I can see their last sync times are a long time
ago!
If they restart their devices then the sync occurs and push notifications work for about half a day then stop again.
We have no issues with any iOS devices getting push notifications. We have a range of Android JellyBean and KitKat deployed so not looking device related. If I turn off push notification on the Android device and force a manual sync every 5 minutes that
works and currently seems to be my workaround. But this will drain the battery quicker now.
The flow of notification would be simple, Exchange2013 > Firewall > Internet > Device
Anyone else experiencing issues like this and know what to check? We have checked all networking aspects and its not a network/firewall issue.

After hours of searching online and testing and troubleshooting I found the issue actually was affecting push notifications to all mobile devices on Exchange 2013 where their mailboxes had been migrated recently from Exchange 2010.
There is a bug in Exchange 2013 CU5 which I am on which causes issues after mailbox migrations and requires the ActiveSync app pool in IIS to require a restart after mailbox moves to function correctly.
After I completed an iisreset within a command prompt on the CAS server everything started working for push notifications.
Lets hope this gets fixed in CU6!
