Android phone, no carrier

Hello all.
I am from Denmark, travelling to the states in late June. I want to buy a new android phone, but I have some concerns:
1) How do I ensure that the phone will work in Europe
2) Is it possible to buy android phone without a contract with a US-carrier - as far as I can see from the website, I can buy the Google Nexus S withoit a carrier, but I would rather buy the Samsung Galax S II - if it is available in the US at that time.

1) Check support for the 3G bands used in your country. Quadband GSM is almost a given for Android phones, however previously nearly all phones that supported the US UMTS bands also supported UMTS2100 (European 3G), however, that is no longer a given. For example, the HTC Inspire 4G from AT&T does not support UMTS2100.
2) Not sure. Possibly - prices will be significantly higher. The phone will come locked but the carrier might unlock it if it's no-contract. Talk directly to the carriers for this, this is a "corner case" where store employees at non-carrier-owned stores will have insufficient training. Even employees at carrier-owned stores may refer you to their customer service call center.

• A list of supported Android Phones for Cisco Jabber Client.

Hi there,
I opened a discussion before about the Cisco Jabber Client for Android phones.
This product from Cisco is only official support bij a several mobile Android telephones. (very poor)
As everyone knows is that the mobile market is continious in development. Since a half year the official support phone list is still the same, but a lot of new Adroid phones are now on the market.
It's even so worse that some of the Cisco supported phones, are not available anymore in the market.
- Samsung Galaxy S2 becomes a Samsung Galaxy S3
- Samsung Galaxy TAB is still there
- Samsung Galaxy S (are not available anymore) The S1 or S Plus are now becoming the Samsung Galaxy S Advanced.
At what are the alternatives?
Still the list on the documentation is out-dated.
See:
Samsung Galaxy S International (GT-I9000) with Android operating system (OS) Version 2.2.1 or 2.3
Samsung Galaxy Tab International (GT-P1000) with Android 2.2.1 or 2.3
Samsung Galaxy S II (AT&T) with Android 2.3
To use Cisco Jabber for Android on the Samsung Galaxy S device, it is important that you upgrade your handset OS to Android Version 2.2.1 or 2.3. See the manufacturer/carrier site for more information about how to update the OS on your device. Minor voice quality issues may be experienced depending on the device used.
So hopefully Cisco is still working on the Cisco Jabber solution, and a lot of mobile Android phones will be supported so the road to success will be open.
Hopefully someone can help me to list of tested and supported phones (Official bij Cisco)
Kind regards,
Edgar

The official list of tested Android phones is what you've already discovered. With the next release of Cisco Jabber for Android, I'm sure it will be updated.
While the official list of what we tested is short, the client will work on many Android devices and TAC will provide support if you run into technical issues; provided the issue is with the Cisco Jabber client itself, and not with the OS of the manufacturer.
If there is a specific Android phone you are looking to have officially tested by Cisco, PM me with that information and I'll work with you to see what we can do to get it added.

• Can I use an Android phone without a data plan?

Please read all of this before responding. You will not be helping when you show a clear misunderstanding of my question.
I do not need a data plan. Everywhere I go has Wi-Fi, and I am perfectly content to not have internet connectivity in the event that I don't have Wi-Fi. What I want to know is if I can buy a phone from a store (not from Verizon or a contract renewal) and replace my current phone with it without needing a data plan. There is NO software/hardware reason why I couldn't, and the only reason I would need to is as a Verizon requirement.
As an additional question, if Verizon doesn't allow it, is there any workaround?
I want an android phone not to have ubiquitous connection to social media. I want an android phone to have platform to run software on in addition to making/receiving calls and text messages. I would not utilize a data plan and it would be a waste of money.
Additional info:
Can I use an Android phone that I buy from a retailer on my Verizon plan without adding data? There's no hardware or software reason why I need a data plan, and there IS a point to having a smart phone without a data plan: Wi-Fi. I don't need to have redundant internet access. The only reason conceivable for why I'd need a data plan is because Verizon wants more money for no additional service (I wouldn't USE connectivity provided by a data plan). I don't want to have a mobile platform for running software and a phone filling my pockets, I'd like it to be in one. All the connectivity I need is for calls and text messaging.

I stand corrected!
Here's an article on the subject with a good discussion and a somewhat dodgy suggestion for non-Verizon service: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57555091-94/can-you-ditch-your-smartphone-data-plan-for-wi-fi/.
Here's a discussion on a T-Mobile forum laying out the options (as of last November): http://support.t-mobile.com/message/198200. It sounds like it would meet one of the OP's desires: "Can I use an Android phone that I buy from a retailer on my Verizon plan without adding data?" Not on Verizon, but probably on T-Mobile.

Just like the title says, I cannot send MMS from my iPhone 5 to my friend's Galaxy S4. We text message fine, so SMS is working. I have MMS messaging turned on in my settings. • I just bought an android phone and the previous owner of the number had an iphone and imessage wont work, how do I fix that?

I just bought an android phone and the previous owner of the number had an iphone and imessage wont work, how do I fix that?
I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S4, and my wife has an iphone. We found out that imessage wont come through from her. After we went to the AT&T helpdesk they said that she could turn off imessage on her phone and that I would get texts on my S4. But then so would everyone else who has an iphone. That won't work for everyone in my company that has an iphone. So what I am wondering is- since I recently got this phone, should I get a new number? Or should I contact ATT or contact Apple to try and get this number de-activated? I'm thinking I'll never get into the icloud account that this number is attached to, but maybe someone has some advice on that?
I just sincerely want imessage to work on this phone and I'm willing to take the steps to do that.
Please help

Either one of the two should work - getting new number from carrier or contacting Apple to revoke phone number from imessage system.
That is if your problem is described correctly.

• Transfer iTunes purchases to android phone

Hi All:
I understand the dangerous political territory I am now entering, but I thought I better ask my question here since I haven't found the solution elsewhere.
I have an iTunes library of purchased music on my (7th Apple) computer and an iPod. I have been an Apple customer since the 90's.
I also happen to have an older Android phone because I cannot afford an iPhone and its higher data plan fees (on my carrier).
I cannot find a way to transfer all my music (using DoubleTwist) - songs downloaded off of iTunes cannot be authenticated/transferred. Which is ludicrous. I paid for them, why can't I listen to them?
Thanks for any tips.

I don't want to get/buy better versions of the music, I just want to play, what I have bought, on the machine of my choice. I used to carry a nano around but it was stolen and I figured: hey! why not my phone!
Not sure why I can't authenticate my phone to replace my nano, regardless of it's manufacturer. Ethically, I should be able to!
There are hundreds of tunes so burning cd's isn't a choice.
Thanks anyway,
Tannis

• Why is Apple forcing me to buy an Android phone?

I am paying hundreds of dollars a month because Apple has refused to let any Canadian carriers sell iPhones with North America Wide unlimited Talk & Data plans. However all of them offer this on Android (with HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS IN SAVINGS).
Why can't apple allow at least 1 phone with this type of plan? I would LOVE to be spending this money on other apple products, rather than paying the wireless providers!!!
THIS *****!!!

It's not my supplier. Here in Canada we have at least 5 carriers that offer the iPhone. TELUS, Rogers, Fido, Koodo, and Bell. Not one of them are able to offer the iPhone with unlimited data & voice plans.
However ALL OF THEM offer Android phones with this option, as well as HTC Phones, and Blackberry....in fact every carrier offers North American unlimited data and voice plans with every other phone manufacturer...the ONLY phone you can't get it with is the iPhone.
There isn't any way these carriers could all be avoiding this type of plan unless they were being told they couldn't. I wouldn't have believed the salespeople in the stores if I hadn't been told the same thing in every store on the same day!!
I currently my family owns 3 Apple computers, 2 iPhones, 1 iPad and 1 apple TV.
It's a shame that I have to go android with my phone now, but it appears that apple isn't interested in helping consumers maintain reasonable plan pricing against google.

• Perfect Combination !! iPad, Apple TV, Android phone, no router !!!

Hi All,
Thought of sharing with you this useful set up.
Activate your android phone as a WiFi hot spot.
Configure your iPad and Apple TV to recognize the Hotspot and connect to it.
You can now stream your iPad content (photos, music and videos) to Appe TV without the need for a WiFi router !!.
You can potentially use this setup if you want to show friends your ipad content on a HD TV if they don't have a router.
You SHOULD be able to connect your Mac/PC to this combination to stream iTunes content to Apple TV without a router. Didn't try it yet though. Let me know if it works for you.
Regards,

There was a similar post the other day about using an iPhone 4 wi-fi hotspot for this sort of thing and I don't think the poster could get it to work.
I've successfully used a 3 mi-fi device (portable wi-fi router) too in the past and I suspect similar devices are available in most countries.
One thing to remember is that if you're somewhere remote and out of network coverage you will probably not be able to play any DRM protected content to AppleTV in this way as it needs to perform internet authorisation. I tried this with mi-fi device iPad and AppleTV 2 on holiday few months ago where there was no carrier signal. The devices could see each other on the LAN but not play protected material.
My HDMI equipped MacMini played DRM files without the need for internet authorisation however.

• Ever going to see a Global Ready Android phone?

Like the subject says - should I just give up hope on seeing a global ready Android phone with VZW?
I've been holding out hope for about 6 months now... I can't imagine I'm the only one who wants this sort of phone. Blackberry has a corner on this part of the market and I'm sure it makes them a lot of money. Those of us who travel frequently just can't do the lame "loaner" program that VZW offers - if you're busy enough to need an international phone, you don't have time to deal with switching phones back and forth.
Any hints that the Droid X or Droid 2 might work everywhere? I'm guessing it's more likely that some sort of HTC offering will be global ready.

Wow. Ok. The reason there are no International roaming Android phones is because the Android phones are shooting for faster processors and higher end chipsets. Ok so that doesn't make any sense but they have been working on chipsets that would allow both radios to operate as they need to for international CDMA phones. As of the time the Droid was out they hadn't gotten there yet. You will see it. They had a processor that would work it just wasn't ready to develop a phone around yet. I don't know if it has changed the information is difficult to come by I had just been reading about that when the Droid was coming out and the Nexus 1 was being developed. Part of the hold out on the Universal Nexus 1 was they hadn't got a 1Ghz chipset that would run both network types. LTE is supposed to be a universal thing. To my knowledge there are no competive technologies out there. Sprint and T-Mobile have a sort of advanced versions of GSM and CDMA that they are calling 4G really it is more like 3.5G but that isn't marketable and since 4G is a concept and not an actual standard or term you can call anything you want 4G so long as it is not the same thing you were calling 3G. With in the next two to Three years the majority of the world will have rolled out an LTE system. The roaming will operate much the same way as it does here. The governing bodies license out frequency bands for the radio waves used to transport information. Verizon has the bulk of the open initiative requirement C Block of LTE Bands. AT&T will have a lot of B block but they are depending apparently on a lot of their ASW bands whatever that means. Basically though what you have is the carriers will have certain radio frequency licenses their devices will be able to operate on those band licenses. In order to change carriers and use your device (no surprise here AT&T has avoided any license that would require that) or do roaming of any kind your device has to be able to operate on the frequency levels of the other company/Carrier. For instance my understanding is that even though AT&T and Verizon will have different blocks of the 700MhZ band we will be able to buy AT&T phones or AT&T users will be able to bring their phones with them to Verizon because of Verizon's open initiative and Open requirements of some of their radio wave licenses because both companies will make use of the 700Mhz band. However, there could be some devices that make use of another band on AT&T. So AT&T by policy might not allow Verizon phones and depending on how the frequency bands shake out may not eventually may have devices that won't work or may have areas of the country where some devices won't have service. Europe should opperate at different bands than America not out of necessity but out of mostly tradition. If that happens in order for a phone to be world roaming capable the phone would have to have the capability of operating on the European bands. Much like GSM now. LTE phones will be dual band in US only networks most likely maybe triband I don't know if there are going to be three bands in the US or not of LTE. It will have to be Tri-band or Quad Band LTE to operate in Europe assuming Europe is adopting other frequency bands like usual. Europe is reserving the 800Mhz band I just found. World phones will then have to be at least 700Mhz and 800Mhz capable. I expect Europe and America to also have LTE broadcasts in a higher band as well. Lower bands have a broader range, higher bands have a shorter range but can handle more users. So I expect major metropolitan areas to broadcast around remaining 1700-2100 MhZ licenses or on some other high frequency level to cover the areas of higher population concentration New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta places like that where there are so many people in smaller areas. From what I can tell Sprint is actually planning on continuing in their path and possibly just moving to a higher end WiMax. That should be interesting and I don't know exactly what that will mean for calling. Whew.
Basically it will still depend but it will be easier. Instead of having to incorporate two different chipsets in a phone to have international roaming you just have to incorporate extra band capabilites or radios.

• My texts say they are sent to an android phone, but the android does not receive them for hours, or even at all.

So, recently my texts are not being received by an android phone. It says they are sent on my phone, but the android phone does not get them for hours or even at all. When they do come through, they come in random order. It is really aggravating and I do not know how to fix it at all. I have reset my phone multiple, updated it, I have tried everything. Any thoughts?

Contact your carrier. There are no settings on the iPhone regarding SMS. SMS is a carrier function. Have the carrier check to make sure that your account is provisioned correctly.

• HOW TO SYNC MY IPHONE CONTACTS TO BOTH MY IPHONE AND ANDROID PHONE SIMENTENEOUSLY

hello
anybody tells me how to sync my iphone contacts to both of my iphone and android phone at the same time

Using iCloud you are then able to transfer your contacts from one iphone to an alternate device. Typically the best way to move contacts from an apple device to android would be for you to go to your wireless carrier for assitance.
Apple mobile devices don't make this type of transferring of data between apple and android devices.

No, this should be the number one thing you are concerned about.
Until you get this sorted, there is a good chance you may simply lose everything.
Do you hav ean external drive?
If so copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external drive.
Then you can delete /Music/iTunes/ empty the trash and recover this space.
Do this then Apple menu > Software update.
Restart the computer
Then post back.
