Animate filters in Photoshop CS3 - possible?

I know this is not the right forum for this question. There is some filter effects in PS CS3 that I want to animate. One way could be to copy the filters and try to use them inside AE CS3, but it would be cool to really learn what is possible to do inside PS. Could this be done?
Regards / Jimmy

You cannot use PS filters in AE. That functionality was removed as of AE 6 due to Photoshop's filter architecture undergoing massive changes at the time that could not be accomodated. Perhaps it will resurface some day (it's a high-priority wish for quite a number of users). You can however use the filters with Photoshop's batch processing and video layers, but only with static settings. For animating filter parameters you will have to dig into BridgeTalk/ Photoshop scripting so you can change parameters on an image-by-image (or frame-by-frame, if you will) basis, but obviously this will take time to learn or find nice peopel versed in that art who are willing to share their knowledge.

  • Unicode in Photoshop CS3 - is it possible ?

Hi. How can i use unicode characters within a Photoshop CS3 text layer? An example: In Word, i can type
    261A
    followed by
    [Alt-key] C
then i see an unicode character in Word (the left-pointing hand).
This does not work in Photoshop. I also cannot copy-paste the unicode character from Word to Photoshop.
What i can do of course:
    - do a screenshot of the character
    - print the character to PDF and import it hi-res to Photoshop
But is it not possible to type in unicode directly. On the net, i didnt find a compact solution.
Is there a way to insert unicode smoothly to a PS text layer?
Btw, Id like unicode not so much for foreign languages, more for symbols (I know there are symbol font sets like Dingbats that don't require unicode). To look up unicode, i use decodeunicode.org and unicode.org. What else do you recommend to find interesting unicode symbols, web sites or freeware (for Windows)?
    Thanks!

In Photoshop...Use Zapf Dingbats, or whichever font you need that contains the extended character you want to display. It's just the quickest and easiest way to get them into a Photoshop layout.
Using the Glyph Palette (panel) will make your choices handy.
Why do it this way? Photoshop doesn't have a built-in parser to convert code so that it will display as characters.
Online, use unicode or character entities coding. You already know how to do that.

I have Photoshop CS3 Extended. The filters have recently stopped working, and has dropped me to a few filters to work with. Is there anyway to get my filters back without uninstalling and reinstalling the program?

    OK but when you do

you may be setting something that is not RGB 8 bit/channel mode.

  • Memory Hangs in Photoshop CS3

    Hello!
I recently upgraded from a Mac Powerbook G4 1.67GHz with 2GB RAM to a Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM. I did a clean install of CS3 on the new machine, and since then I keep experiencing memory hangs, mostly when interacting with the pallet menus (layers in Photoshop,InDesign, Illustrator, type in InDesign , etc..). I haven't noticed an of the filters in Photoshop being any slower – in fact those appear to be a little zippier than on myPowerbook . I've found that the same operation when done through the pallets hangs, while it goes as smoothly as expected when done through the menus (Hide Layer is a perfect example). Does anyone know a solution to this? I'm planing to install more RAM, but I would think 2GB would be enough to prevent these system-wide memory hangs on operations that shouldn't be that big of a task in the first place.2
    Thanks!

Well, re-consider waht you just said, given that the operating system itself can consume up to 1.3 GB with all bells on. 2GB is by far inadequate for most computers these days. That does not necessarily explain your hangs/ laggy behavior, but it may be related. What you should definitely check, is whether the apps in question are not running in Rosetta emulation, but in intel native mode. For some reason that sometimes happens. Also, in case of strange issues, it is a good idea to run tools like OnyX and flush any cahces, including font cahes, system prefetch, boot cache. On that same topic, generalyl look for thijngs like offensive/ bad fonts as well as possibly otehr components inetrfering. Some Haxies for instance do interfere with some Adobe apps, but not all of them, leading to seemingly arbitrary behavior between apps...

  • Nikon D300 Raw files for 64bit windows vista machine not appearing in Photoshop CS3 raw

I purchased a new 64bit computer running Vista. I have installed Photoshop CS3 including the latest updates and the 4.6 (Camera Raw.8bi) raw update file. I included the raw file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats. I have purged cache in Bridge and I still cannot view the raw files in Bridge. I only see a gray square with a Blue NEF. I can open the files in Photoshop however. What can I do to see the files in Bridge?

    Nikon encrypts RAW file data
ByMichael R. Tomkins, The Imaging Resource
    (Wednesday, April 20, 2005 - 02:16 EDT)
A news item posted on Sunday by PhotoshopNews.com reports on comments from Thomas Knoll, one of the original authors of Adobe Photoshop, relating to the RAW file format used in Nikon's D2X and D2Hs digital SLRs.
    <IFRAME src="http://208.43.255.194/cgi-bin/advertpro/banners.fpl?region=112&keyword=NULL" height="250" width="300" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" vspace="0" hspace="0" frameborder="0" align="middle" scrolling="no"> <A href="http://208.43.255.194/cgi-bin/advertpro/blink.fpl?region=112&slot=1" target="_blank"> <IMG src="http://208.43.255.194/cgi-bin/advertpro/bimg.fpl?region=112&slot=1&keyword=NULL" border="0" width="300" height="250" alt="Click Here!"> </A> </IFRAME>
Thomas Knoll is currently the chief engineer for Adobe Camera Raw, the company's RAW file conversion software. The PhotoshopNews item references a forum thread started by Mr. Knoll in Adobe's official user forums, where he reveals that .NEF RAW files from the latest Nikon digital SLRs encrypt data relating to the white balance setting the photo was shot with.
RAW file formats vary significantly between digital camera manufacturers (and often, between different models in a manufacturer's lineup), and the manufacturers generally won't publicly disclose the specification for the RAW file format(s) they use. Some will offer plugins or software development kits (SDKs) that enable their RAW files to be opened in third-party applications, but these generally have some limitations attached to their use.
In addition, the companies generally offer RAW file conversion software of their own, either as part of their camera bundles or as an added-cost option. Nikon offer their pro SLRs with PictureProject software that includes limited control over the RAW file conversion process, and then offer the more feature-rich Nikon Capture conversion software for an added cost. In a recent publication on the company's Nikon Pro website, it suggested that it feels Nikon Capture is better-suited to photographers, while Adobe's Photoshop is more suited to graphic artists. Still, different photographers have different workflow preferences, and for this reason third parties such as Adobe often reverse engineer the RAW file formats, allowing them to be opened in their own software - sometimes with even better image quality than the original manufacturer's software.
In a way, it is understandable that companies would want to encrypt RAW file data from their products - it allows them to pick and choose which competitors are able to open RAW files shot with their products, and allows them to generate new revenue streams from the sale of their own RAW file conversion software (or, if they choose, the sale of licenses allowing competitor programs to access their RAW file data). Nikon is not the first company we're aware of to encrypt data in RAW files; Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-F828 RAW files contain encrypted data. In that instance, however, Sony granted permission for Adobe to decrypt the data in their software. At the current time, Mr. Knoll states that while Adobe has signed a non-disclosure agreement that grants them access to use Nikon's SDK, they have not received any response to requests from Adobe that the company be allowed to decrypt the white balance data, which would allow closer integration with their software than is possible with the SDK.
The fact that Nikon has chosen to encrypt a portion of the RAW file data would not be particularly problematic for third parties to overcome, were it not for certain laws enacted around the world in recent years. One such law is the United States' "Digital Millennium Copyright Act", often referred to as the DMCA, which makes it illegal to produce technology that can circumvent measures designed to protect copyright. One could argue that Nikon's encryption of the white balance data is just such a measure - which would make it an offense for a third party without permission to make software that could decrypt the original white balance setting used by the camera when the photo was shot. One could equally argue, however, that the copyright over the RAW file belongs to the photographer who captured the image - and hence the choice over what is done with that copyrighted work is entirely up to the photographer.
Unfortunately, there's no clear-cut answer, and short of a company or programmer finding themselves in court for having cracked the encryption, there isn't likely to be such an answer any time soon. This presents a problem for third parties attempting to make their own RAW file conversion routines for the D2X and D2Hs, as if they don't want to risk opening themselves up to legal action, they aren't able to determine the original white balance setting. Hence, they must either request the white balance setting from the user as the RAW file is converted, or attempt to determine an appropriate white balance setting automatically (which would not necessarily be the same as that determined by the camera itself).
Nikon hasn't communicated their reasons for encrypting the white balance information in their latest NEF formats, but we have to say it doesn't sound like a very good idea. While Nikon Capture does indeed offer excellent capabilities for people to manipulate images saved in NEF formats, many photographers and organizations have already established workflows based on Adobe's RAW plugin for Photoshop and other image-processing tools. The biggest consequence of this move on Nikon's part seems likely to be to push more photographers onto other camera platforms. It's hard to imagine that increased sales of Nikon Capture will make up the revenue lost from camera and lens sales going forward.

  • From Photoshop CS3 to Suite Production Premium CS4 - order failed

    Hello,
I have a little problem with buying a product from Adobe. I have Photoshop CS3 and I want to buy CS4 Suite Production Premium. When I search for this product and check the upgrade options it says that I can upgrade from my Photoshop CS3 version. However, when I order this product I get an order cancelation after some minutes without any reason - and no, it is not a CreditCard problem - I checked everything. All data is correct. Where there would be a real problem, why I don't get a call from them?
Then I called the sales hotline and the guy on the line told me that I need the Upsell version and that he can't check why the online order was canceled. Ok - I ordered this upsell version for a higher price than the online upgrade version. Some hours later I got a weird email from Adobe saying again that my order has been canceled. ??? I wonder whats going on there. I can't reach the sales guy on the weekend so I have to wait and I know that he can't give any information about why the order has been canceld again (why that?). That way it seems I am not able to order any product from Adobe and honestly I don't want to order it from Adobe directly anymore.
May it be possible that I can't upgrade or upsell from Photoshop CS3 alone to the Production Premium Suite CS4 - even it saying like this on their website.
Also, why is there only the upgrade version available on the online store and not the upsell version and why do I see an upgrade option even it must be called upsell version?
Why is the upgrade manager: http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/upgrade saying the same that I CAN UPGRADE from Photoshop CS3 to this Suite.
I am speechless about that much trouble with a company like Adobe. And yes, this is my first try to order a Suite from Adobe directly. Now I am very unsure what to buy, where to buy and how I get this to work.
Btw. Customer Support didn't answer my emails about this.
    Thanks for any hint!
    Andreas

I did that twice and called them. They are always saying that they can't see what the problem is but they can setup a new order and try again - hello? - try and error ordering. I will not order on the Adobe Store anymore. This was the first and my last time I tried to order on their site or via a sales agent from their sales team. Also, when I see their emails that came back about the cancelation: No Subject line, weird emailaddress and with some really confusing product description and with a standard answer. I first thought it was some spam. I am really disapointed about their service.
I also found out that the sales guy put in a wrong phone number and I can remember we checked the number three times. I mean, I don't order a pair of socks here - I want a pro sales service for a pro product where I pay a lot of money for.

  • Add Header and Footer in PDF-presenation, Photoshop CS3

    Hi
How is it possible to make at Header and Footer in a PDF-Presentation generatet in Photoshop CS3 without placing it on every image. Is there a setting (I have not found it) where you can predefine this?
    Best regards/Jean

    hi,
//changing the font of the rows populated
u can create Font instance like this:

  • NEF RAW files from my Nikon D5300 will not open in Photoshop CS3

Is there a plug-in or update I can download that will make it possible for my Photoshop CS3 to open NEF files in RAW.
I noticed a similar discussion a couple of years ago and I followed the advice and as far as I can tell I have the most up-to-date version of my software, and the Camera Raw plug-in is Version 4.6.0.30
I also have the same problem using CS5. Both versions say they cannot recognize the file type. Can I use a converter to make them a different kind of RAW file, but still a RAW format? I would prefer to simply be able to open them in Photoshop for editing.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
    Barb

I just checked the compatibility list again, and the D5300 requires Camera Raw 8.3 (Not 7.3) or Lightroom 5.3. You have Lightroom 5, but what exact version of Lightroom 5 do you have? It might require that you update your Camera Raw and your Lightroom in order to have support in both Photoshop and Lightroom.
You can check your version of Camera Raw by going to the help menu in Photoshop, then about plug-ins and then Camera Raw. The dialog that appears will indicate what version of Camera Raw you have installed. It should not be necessary for you to use the DNG converter unless you feel compelled to.

  • Photoshop CS3 doesn't open or error occurs, when you Edit in Photoshop CS3 from Photoshop Lightroom 2

Problem: When you try to Edit in Photoshop CS3 from Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2, Photoshop CS3 doesn't open, or after Photoshop opens, you see the error message, "Photoshop could not be launched".
This issue is currently being investigated. At present, there are two possible areas that might be causing this issue. Corrupted metadata or a corrupted catalog, or Photoshop CS3 has not been updated to 10.0.1, or the update did not apply correctly to the application.
We are working for a permanent solution for this issue.
Workaround: Please refer to this Adobe

  • Automator and Adobe Photoshop CS3

    Hi All,
I have never used Automator so i am not sure if this is what it is for but I want to be able to apply a watermark to all my images by opening them from a folder in Adobe Photoshop CS3, applying the watermark image then saving and closing the image.
    Is this possible?
Sorry if this is in the wrong area, i was not sure where to post it, it could even be an Adobe question???
    Any help is much appreciated.
    cheers,
    Andrew

You have already received an answer using actions in Photoshop and this would give you great flexibility regarding your steps in the action.
However, if you want to use Automator you can download "Photoshop Automator Actions v3.5". This set includes a watermark action as well as 85 other actions to be used with Photoshop CS3.

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes all the time - Please help!

    Hello
I didn't find any answer in the forum.
I work with Photoshop CS3 Version 10.0.1. on Mac Powerbook 10.4.11.
Photoshop quits all the time, no work possible anymore. It quits when I want to open a file or when I want to safe an new file (message PS unexpectedly quite).
The trouble (maybe - actually I am not sure) may started after I updated all Adobe program. There were some messages popping up that not everything was updated properly.
Anyway I reinstalled Photoshop 3 times and CS3 completely 2 times and the last time I run the clean up program as well. No change.
Please help! Thank you very much.
    Rosa

    Rosa,
    >So, you are also suggesting that I don't upgrade but install new.
NEVER, ever use the "upgrade" option.
Rather, do an "Archive and Install".
    >What do I have to take care of beside of making a backup from everything?
    Routine maintenance is imperative.
I still advocate Repairing Permissions (with Apple's Disk Utility) before AND after any system update or upgrade, as well as before AND after installing any software that requires an installer that asks for your password.
I have seen software installations go sour because the installer did not find everything as and where it should be.
I have also seen software installations go bad because the installer did not clean up after itself properly and did not leave everything as and where it should be.
This is just my own personal opinion and practice based on my own observations. Others may disagree and that's OK. I can only base my routines and my advice to others on my own experience and conclusion. I don't pretend to know why others believe otherwise.
Repairing Permissions after the fact (i. e. not immediately before and after an install) seldom helps.; Try it anyway, though.

Additionally, if your machine does not run 24/7 so that it runs the daily, weekly and monthly Cron Scripts in the middle of the night as intended by Apple, run Cocktail (shareware) as well.
Cron Scripts are maintenance routines designed by Apple to run on a daily, weekly and monthly basis in the middle of the night.
If you don't run them, you WILL run into trouble, sooner rather than later.
Here's an excerpt from the Apple tech doc
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388
Mac OS X performs background maintenance tasks at certain times if the computer is not in sleep mode. If your computer is shut down or in sleep at the designated times, the maintenance does not occur. In that case, you may want or need to run these manually.
Mac OS X periodically runs background tasks that, in part, remove system files that are no longer needed. This includes purging older information from log files or deleting certain temporary items. These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large.
    Also, from:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106978
The disk activity generated by find is a normal part of file system maintenance, used for tasks such as removing invisible temporary files that are used by the system. It is scheduled to occur early in the morning at 03:15 everyday, 04:30 on Saturdays, and 05:30 on the first day of each month.
    NOTE:
There have been comments to the effect that Apple "fixed" this in 10.4.2 and later versions of the OS, but I have not been able to verify this to my satisfaction. The reference in the 10.4.2 release notes are far from explicit on this subject.

  • Can I open psd file made in photoshop cs3 with photoshop ps2?

Can I open psd file made in photoshop cs3 with photoshop ps2? Thanks in advance!

Actually you can open a CS3 file with smart filters in CS2
the only problem is CS2 will not understand the Smart filter and flatten it.
If you leave the smart filtered object alone in CS2 save the file and it should still be a smart filtered object in CS3

  • Photoshop CS3 - Opens photos very slow

Alright so I have an interesting one I am hoping someone can help me with... I have Adobe Photoshop CS3 (I know, a little behind).  I have been using CS3 since it came out and love it - however recently, and unfortunately I don't have any real time-frames off the top of my head, it is incredibly slow to open photos.
Typically I drag/drop a photo from my folders into Adobo to begin my editing based on the pictures I see fit to edit.  The pictures come from a Canon T2i - I dump them to my local HDD, and then move the photos I wish to edit into Photoshop.  The average file size is about 7mb, so they're not huge.  Now when I open the pictures, it takes, on average, about a minute and a half per picture to open.  During this time Adobe is non-responsive as in menus, navigation, etc... - I can minimize and maximize, it doesn't freeze or anything.  Just sits there while it attempts to open these photos (using no more than 3% processor time).  It does eventually open them, no errors.
This problem happens whether I drag drop into photoshop, open from the file menu, whether they're RAW images, JPEG, GIF, PNG, PSD, 10mb in size or 10kb in size, etc...
I know it's not the system, everything else runs great.
The system is a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit system, 8GB of Ram, dual core process (1.86ghz each), dual nVidia GeForce GTX 275 (512mb each) video cards that are running with nVidia's latest drivers.
The system is installed on a Western Digital 10,000RPM HDD and I have 6TB of hard-drives (all internal SATA) where my files are stored.  I'd fine it hard to believe if it's the system.
I can play graphic intensive games without glitches, run Microsoft ICE for image sewing (without hesitation), and edit/dump HD videos without problems into Sony Vegas Video.
I have attempted to reset of Adobe Photoshop by doing the CTRL+ALT+SHIFT while loading and allowing complete reset.  I turned of all Windows 7 effects (even though this issue never happened before when I had Windows 7 since launch).  I set the Photoshop.exe to the highest priority in task manager, alloted 88% RAM to it through Adobe preferences, and ensured that both processors are given full attention it.  Still nothing.
Has anyone experience this before?  Outside of un-installing and re-installing (which is next) - I can't think of anything else...

    themrkik wrote:

Just to be clear, did you get a prompt from Photoshop confirming preferences deletion?  I ask because sometimes folks think they've done a reset without having seen that dialog, and that's not the case.  You have to be VERY quick to get Photoshop to notice you've pressed these keys during startup.  If it doesn't prompt you, you weren't quick enough.
Some other things to think about:
Is your default printer offline?  Is there any printer installed in your system that's offline?
Do you have the Twain driver installed but a scanner is turned off or missing?
Are there any network drives established but the network resource is offline or unreachable?
What 3rd party plug-ins do you have installed into Photoshop?  Is it possible one of them is not initializing properly?
