Animate Stroke Weight of a vector graphic

Hi. I'm new to adobe's programs and digital art as a whole, so bare with me. I've watched all of the tutorials on adobe's website to learn my way around and am excited to utilize these new tools. I'm trying to create an idea, but am having trouble figuring out how to do is this. I would like to create an animation of a vector graphic I created, but I would like the stroke weight to increase from .001 to about .3 or so. So It would be 300 frames. I imported my AI file to AE but there was no option to adjust the stroke weight in there. Is there an easy way to go about what I'm trying to do rather than save out 300 different files and organize them into a video? It's also composed of a complex pattern brush so I think the program is working pretty hard. It takes like 10 seconds or so for a big increase in stroke weight to load, but there is lots of detail so it makes sense I guess. Thanks for your time.

Thank you. I made a simple vector to test your method. This is exactly what I was trying to do. However, I think my image is too complex for the program to handle. I waited 53 minutes for after effects to try and load the shapes before force quitting.. Do you think I need to just be more patient and give it a few hours? My other concern with that though is if it manages to load all the shapes if I'm going to be experiencing ultra lag trying to do any editing to the image once it's fully loaded. My image is metatron's cube composed of very tiny metatron cubes. I'd upload the file for someone else to experiment with but it doesn't look like these forums have attachment options. Any advice on this issue? I'm running a 2011 iMac with 16gb ram. The activity monitor only shows about 1-4gb of ram being used during this process.

  • Vector graphics import, labelling dilema

I'm using Framemaker 10, Autodesk Illustrator Publisher, Inkscape, Windows Vista.
I have imported some CAD illustrations from Autodesk Illustrator into Illustrator Publisher.  There I have labelled them.
I have then saved/published them as .svg files.
If I import them directly in to Framemaker, they open with the callouts at a strange angle and 3/4 of the picture missing. Therefore I have to open them in Inkscape, bring the whole picture in to frame and line up the callouts.
Now I import them into Framemaker.  The trouble is, the numbering is difficult to predict.  The labelling/callouts/numbering always turns what looks to be bold.  But the real problem is resizing the illustrations.  Because there is no way of predicting the size of the output from Publisher, the illustrations have to be resized in Framemaker.  This would be no problem usually as the illustrations are svg (vector graphics) but of course it resizes the labelling/callouts/numbering which makes it look really daft when I have 10 illustrations all with different sized fonts.
What do people in here do?  Does anyone else use Vector graphics in their manuals.
I would really appreciate some response on this as I feel I've hit a brick wall here.
    Thanks

    > I'm using Framemaker 10, Autodesk Illustrator Publisher, Inkscape, Windows Vista.
    Is Adobe Illustrator available?
    > I have imported some CAD illustrations from Autodesk Illustrator into Illustrator Publisher.  There I have labelled them.
Why not label them in Frame? We do, and it has advantages beyond avoiding text rendering and scaling issues, such as being able to re-use the same illustration for multiple purposes with different callouts. We use embedded callouts in our service manuals (the XML engine requires it), and depopulate the callouts (usually just switching off one layer) for re-use of that art in the Frame manuals.
    > I have then saved/published them as .svg files.
Let me admit that I have no experience with SVG, due to lack of SVG support across all of our workflow, but we use vector EPS extensively.
    > If  I import them directly in to Framemaker, they open with the callouts at  a strange angle and 3/4 of the picture missing. Therefore I have to  open them in Inkscape, bring the whole picture in to frame and line up  the callouts.
If SVG has preview/thumbnail embedded images, is there a chance that this is just a preview problem? What happens at print or render to PDF?

This is one of the downsides of embedded callouts. If the images cannot be pre-sized, either the text will scale arbitrarily, which is ugly, or it won't scale, which is a disaster. More bad news - your stroke weights are scaling too.
    > Because there is no way  of predicting the size of the output from ...
I would junk any image editor, vector or raster, that didn't provide that basic level of output control.
    > Does anyone else use Vector graphics in their manuals?
Yes, sourced from Pro-E, AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, Frame and extractions from supplier PDFs of unknown origination. We clean them up in Adobe Illustrator, using specific dimensional extents, and a stroke weight that's acceptable for a limited range of up and down scalings. Callouts are added in Frame, using a self-masking arrow, and a self-masking bubble with a grouped text frame and a paragraph format specific to callout use.

  • Reduce file size vector graphics

When it comes to imported vector graphics are there any methods to decrease the swf's file size as much as possible?
    So far I have:
    - imported an illustrator ai file (strokes 'expanded' in illustrator and unneeded swatches/brushes etc. deleted and with no raster images embedded)
    - exported the file in illustrator as swf and imported that swf into flash
    - imported ai file and breaking it down to flash shapes
    - optimized those shapes as much as possible
I rather use vector as much as possible. For a banner for examle, I've imported vector images of trees. I couldn't get it below 40 kb so I exported all illustrator files to png files which helped. Can detailed vector images be optimized just as much? Or is it better to use bitmap files when it comes to more detailed graphics? Does it matter if it is a vector images made in flash or a imported vector file even if both have the same number of paths?
Any other ideas I might try besides the things I've already tried?

There is a certain threshold when a bitmap can actually be smaller than a detailed vector graphic. Especially when working on small image sizes, bitmaps can often be quite smaller.
For a vector graphic, you can't do more than reducing the number of vertexes which may result in a poorer graphic.
With bitmaps, you can do a lot more:
Keep in mind that bitmaps with an alpha channel use up much more memory than bitmaps without alpha information. So try to reach your goal without using transparent bitmaps - which seems hard in the beginning, but as Flash provides different blending modes, you can, for example use the blending mode "multiply" for a black logo on a white background with just a grayscale bitmap instead of a bitmap with alpha channel information.
The same is valid for a white logo on a black background: Use the "add" blending mode instead, then.
I have also written some Photoshop Plugins to reduce the alpha-channel bit-resolution which sometimes gives me the extra 3-4kb I needed. Instead of using 256 shades of alpha, it reduces them to maybe 8 or 16. Alpha-Channels are comressed like GIF/PNG images inside of flash, so having as few different shades of alpha as possible will make images smaller. I even use dithering sometimes for softer alpha areas.
In some rare cases, you can also gain some bytes if you convert text to vector graphics (pressing CTRL-B twice), but this only works when there's not much text at all. That's because the metric information for text glyphs take up a bit more space then just the shapes. So you can imagine that this may only work if there is just one text element with all different letters. So you won't get much size reduction by converting "abracadabra". But you will get some reduction if you convert "the quick brown fox jumps" into shapes.
This all can help if you have restrictions like 30kb or even 20kb to create a full animated flash banner.

  • How can I create this as a vector graphic?

    HI Folks,
I'd like to create the attached as a vector graphic, can anyone tell me the best way to do this in Fireworks CS3?
    http://www.sandwell.nhs.uk/circles.jpg
I've tried to draw it using the pen tool, but it doesnt look accurate.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi matthisco
Go to vector tools and choose the donut tool. Draw a circle and use the yellow spots to adjust the edges minimize the fill area and drag the segment you want to cut so it looks like you want. For the circle choose no fill, and stroke about 20-25px , stroke category 1-pixel soft.

  • Working with labelled vector graphics (CS4)

I've working with a rather large set of simple geometric vectors.
They've all been created in illustrator, but need to be scaled in InDesign and flow with the text.
The only method I've come up with is somewaht convoluted, so I thought I'd share and see if anyone had any suggestions on how I might improve the workflow.
    - vector graphic is pasted (not placed) into InDesign and ungrouped
    - strokes are converted (manually) to object styles (graphic styles created in illustrator are lost)
    - graphis is regrouped and roughly scaled
    - labels are added and paragraph styles applied
    - labels are grouped with graphic, cut, and "paste into" anched text box
    - re-scaling and label edits are done with select content/container/next object
More complicated graphics will be linked and rescaled in illustrator and relabelled and placed as above.
Is there a better/easier way to do this?
(Maybe CS5 will have a container isolation mode...)

I want to keep the labels out of illustrator, but there are a few graphics with more detail that percentage scaling is the way to go.
It would be far easier if InDesign would respect (i.e. import, map) Illustrator's graphic styles.

  • Scalable Vector Graphics Format

Is there anyway to import Scalable Vector Graphics files into Keynote? This is a useful format for drawing programs in the open source world. For example, I have been using the Illustrator-like program, Inkscape, to good effect, but I cannot get the drawings I make into Keynote except as bitmaps.

    Welcome to the discussions, Alexis.
I believe that "best" is subjective. It depends on what you want to do and how much you want to pay. For example, OmniGraffle is not as well known as, say, Adobe Illustrator, but for the difference in price, it may be worth your while especially if what you intend to do is create a few shapes every now and then for your presentation. You could also take a look at Purgatory Design's Intaglio.
The cool thing about both OmniGraffle and Intaglio (that's not true for Adobe Illustrator) is they both support LinkBack. What is linkback?
    http://commons.ucalgary.ca/~king/projects/keynoteplugins/linkback/
Essentially, you can copy a graphic out of OmniGraffle or Intaglio and paste it into Keynote after installing the patch at the website above. Then, even after you've quit the program, if you decide that you need it to be a red-blue gradient instead of a red-black gradient, you just double-click on the graphic. The Linkback enabled program of your choice will then open and you will be able to EDIT that graphic fully. Make it larger smaller, change colors stroke whatever you want to do. When you SAVE that document, those changes are shown in Keynote so either of those could make a nice side app to use with Keynote.
Finally, if you just want to open a program, draw some pictures then export to a Keynote .key file, EazyDraw can do that. It's a little different from the other programs and some of it's conventions may not be familiar, but once you've gotten the hang of where everything is, it's fine to work with. You can even create separate layers in EazyDraw and have each layer output as a separate slide.

  • CS6: Object Find/Change-Stroke weight?

    Hi all,
First time using the find/change Object query in CS6.
I'd like to search for and decrease a specific stroke weight on all frames in my document (in this case they are all graphic frames, but I'm unable to get it to work)
I've tried searching for all frames, text frames, graphic frames, within the Document, but the query is not finding any of the bad strokes. (I watched a Lynda.com tutorial and it looked so easy, but I can't figure out why it isn't searching for them. (none of the objects are locked)
Is there an attribute I need to uncheck in the Find Object Format Options to ensure it only searches of the stroke? Thanks for any input.
    Here's an example:

    Thank you! That worked.

  • Adjust stroke weight when scaling problem

    Hello,
I am having trouble with the stroke on an object changing when I scale that object.  I have already read to uncheck "Adjust Stroke Weight when Scaling" but my problem is that option is grayed out in my "Transform" panel.  When I go into edit>menus, there is an "eye" graphic next to it so it should be showing.  I am trying to figure out how to make that show up so that I can then uncheck it, resize a photo and keep the same stroke weight at all times.
    Thanks
    Pat

    Peter,
Thank you for your response, that was what I needed to fix the problem!

  • Maintaining stroke weight proportionally in scales

when i give a path a stroke weight and then scale and then scale it down, the stroke weight remains in the same. how can i get the stroke weight to scale proportionally too.
example: when I make a logo, I assign a stroke of 2 pts to the graphic. then I scale it down to a business card size and the stroke weight remains 2 pts which is too much for a tiny graphic. also when I scale it up, the stroke weight proportionally appears to be too thin... please help

You can also make that change in the flyout menu in the Transform Panel.

  • Why are my stroke weights not scaling?

I'm new to InDesign. Just installed it and playing for the first time.
I'm having issues with scaling the stroke weight of vector objects. I create an object or path, but when I go to scale it, the weight doesn't scale too. I've made sure that the 'adjust stroke weight when scaling' is ticked.
    What am I doing wrong?
Really appreciate any help I can get on this.
    Thanks

There have been several discussions reporting the same problem.
Re: Photos with iOS8.1 Event and Face out of sequence
There is no known fix. Send feedback to Apple to request a better photo sync, that will respect the sorting of faces albums.

  • How do you prevent Acrobat PDFMaker from rasterizing vector graphics?

I am using the "Create PDF" button (provided by the Acrobat PDFMaker in Acrobat X) to create a PDF from a Microsoft Word 2010 document.
This works fine, except that vector graphics in the Word document appear in the resulting PDF as raster graphics. (That is, when I zoom in, document text outside the graphics appears smooth, but the graphics are blocky; and text inside the graphics that should be retained as text - it's not converted to curves - is just pixels.)
The original artwork for the vector graphics is in CorelDRAW X6 (sorry, Adobe!).
I have exported the following files from the original vector drawing in CorelDRAW:
    - EPS (with TIFF preview)
    - Windows metafile (.wmf)
    - Enhanced metafile (.emf)
I can insert any of these files into Word okay (Insert > Picture), but the resulting PDF always contains a rasterized (bitmapped) version of the vector graphic ("line art").
From memory, this didn't use to happen in my previous working environment (Acrobat 8 Pro with Word 2003, using artwork exported from CorelDRAW 12).
How do you prevent Acrobat X PDFMaker from rasterizing vector graphics? Or is Word 2010 (or CorelDRAW X6) somehow to "blame" here?

    Transparency Flattening is being invoked.
From the Create PDF button, select Properties, what is your setting for Default Settings? Select High Quality Print

  • Loading vector graphics at runtime

    Hi,
I'd like to know if there is any way or any vector graphic file format that i can load dynamically at runtime on a web-based flash application.
I have some files in pdf that i want to load in and i can convert them to jpgs at runtime and load the jpgs but then i lose vector graphics so when i zoom in and out they become pixelated.
I had a look a look at flashpaper to convert pdf to swf and load them in but i can't see anywhere in the documentation about converting the pdf's at runtime rather than manually dragging and dropping them in.
So far i've looked at pdf, svg and .ai but none of these can be loaded at run time just imported into the .FLA
So can this be done? Or alternatively is there an application that can do the pdf -> swf conversion from the commandline then i could trigger php to do the conversion at runtime.
    thanks in advance.

  • Need some help in finding a specific stroke weight...

My preflight program is flagging illustrations with less than a .2 stroke weight and finding these instances can be a reall bugger. The preflight will give the >.2 value so I tried going back to the illustration and creating a line with the offending pt value and selecting same stroke weight but it won't select them. Once I have manually found the small stroke weight I've compared the two strokes for any differences but it won't select even when the color is the same and stroke=default appearance. Once I select the original line and do the select same stroke than it finds the other instances just fine. Anyone know whats going on? I'm using Illustration CS4 and the files are all .ai.
Any help would be much appreciated!

For anyone looking at thread I found a quick solution on the forum...

    2. Magic Wand Palette: Set Stroke Weight Tolerance to ".24 pt"
    3. Magic Wand Tool: Click the line you drew in step 1.  Paths with stroke weight of .25 pt or less should be selected.  JET
