Animated GIFs are ridiculously large - why?

Hi all,
I cannot figure out why the animated GIFs I am exporting are
so massive in file size. For example, I import a small 5-frame
650Byte GIF. I edit the size of the canvas to pad it to a square
(from 54x40 to 54x54, or something like that), then I save it with
the following settings:
Animated GIF
Exact Palette
0 Loss
4 Colours (5 including alpha channel)
No dither
And it comes out as 64.4KB. How can the file size increase by
100 times with barely any change? Even if I import it, change
nothing and save the file with the same settings as above, it's
still 64.4KB. Is Fireworks padding the file with unnecessary
information or something?
Thanks for any help,
John.

I'm confused. What is this I am looking at. What have you
done to it to
make it increase in weight?

  • Animated gifs are grainy problem

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make my
animated gifs look great from flash. I have exported the layered
psd files as pngs, jogs, gifs, bitmaps, you name, I have done it,
BUT to no avail. Someone please help me, why can't the websites
just plug in my .swf files, they look awesome, yeah a little
larger. I would design in another program, but the client needs
each frame to click to a different URL. What am I doing wrong? It
    looks like a color issue?

Use Fireworks......That's where the functionality from
ImageReady went...for the .gif file format. If you would like the
trial should be available by the end of next month....Beta is done
I think. One the .gif is created, import into Flash.

  • Animated .gif files in Captivate - why doesn't it work?

    OS:                         XP
    Captivate Version:      3
I was e-mailed an animated .gif that I want to use in a project I'm working on.
I saved the .gif to a drive.  I then clicked Insert - Animation and selected it.  I received a message stating This is not an animated GIF file or file in use.  If I click Insert - Image, it brings in the image but the file is not animated.
Just for testing purposes, I moved the .gif file by itself on to the web server.  When I access it through Internet Explorer on the web server, it works.
How do I get the file to animate in Captivate?
    Your help is appreciated.  Thanks.

I wasn't able to open your GIF animation in Photoshop and nothing appeared in Captivate when I inserted it -- the same experience that you had. I tried an experiment with a very simple GIF animation that I created from scratch in Photoshop CS4. When I tried to insert this simple animation into Captivate 4, a message appeared that Captivate was converting. It never finished converting and eventually hung Captivate and had to force it to quit.
Since Lilybiri is able to insert Photoshop animated GIFs into Captivate without any problems, it may be that there are some version incompatibilities. It would be interesting to know which versions of Photoshop and Captivate Lilybiri is using and which versions you are using. It would also be interesting to know if Lilybiri is using transparency in the GIF, and which settings are being used when saving the GIF.

  • 29.97fps timeline / animated stills are 23.98fps, why?

I'm inserting key-framed animated stills in a standard 29.97 fps timeline. I'm getting some shimmering on the stills with slightly higher contrast edges. This could be the size of the stills (I'm trying to keep them fairly small (HD) in resolution, or the specific animated moves I know ... but,
I'm just wondering. When I look at the properties of the stills, they are all 23.98 fps. Everything else on the timeline and the timeline itself is 29.97 fps. Why would the stills be 'supposedly' a different framerate? And is this something I can change, or should bother changing?
    All ears,
    Ben

For whoever is interested, the answer is: if you want your 23.98 edit "fit in" an hour and a half using 29.97 DF timecode, its length would be exactly 1:28:42:16.
Correct...that is what you have to do. I too find it odd that FCP will not allow a 23.98 DF timeline, if so, timing would match perfectly. But no...I have to do what you do. I lay slug to get my DF timing, then copy and paste that into a 23.98 NDF timeline and note the end time. Hey, it works. Dunno why Apple isn't fixing this.
As for the audio OMF...I simply OMF the 23.98 sequence and give that to the protools guy (I use the Duck)...and THEY can convert it from 23.98 to 29.97. I know, because he does that when he lays off audio to my HDCAM master and again to my Digibeta master.
Why are you exporting the OMF to an Avid?

  • Safari 4.0.X and Animated GIFs

I have a web site that makes use of animated GIFs that I've created with Adobe Photoshop (7 and more recently CS3). They worked fine when I viewed them with earlier versions of Safari, but not with Safari 4.0.X (i.e., any vers. 4 issued so far including 4.0.3). They either change after a long delay (60 sec. instead of designed 5 sec.) or not at all.
Other browsers seem not to have this problem, but I haven't tried them all.
In trying to solve this problem I've discovered some interesting things:
    1. When I create an HTML page using Dreamweaver on my desktop, add an animated GIF, and open it with Safari 4.0.X the GIF animates as designed,
    2. When I access a page from my web site the GIF doesn't animate as described above. However, if I close that page and access it again, the GIF animates, presumably because I'm viewing the cached page on my computer.
    3. Animated GIFs on other sites seem to work (maybe they didn't use Photoshop?).
    4. I sent a Bug Report to Apple on vers 4.0.1 but the problem is still there on 4.0.3
My question is why the different behavior in 1. and 2. above, and why hasn't Apple fixed this problem that seems to be newly created with vers. 4.0.X?

    star-fish wrote:
I think the main problem is that your gifs are massive. Animated gifs should be quite small, and not have more than 256 colours. Try resizing one as a test, say 25% of what it currently is and see if that changes anything.
If it doesn't, try making an animation on http://gifworks.com and uploading it to see if that's any faster.
As an aside, you don't need tables on each individual page - just 'center' your text and image. Tables are designed to be used for tabulated data, and create problems for people using screen readers if they aren't.
Also, you may want to remove the . in image and page title names, because those could cause you problems too. Renaming your pages and images so they reflect what's on them more accurately is good for search engines too.
Thanks for your reply, star-fish. I agree my animated GIFs are large, and my page design may not be optimum. However, when I access them with other browsers such as FireFox 3.5.2 and Internet Explorer 5.2, which I did just a few minutes ago, they begin animating in the designed 5 or 6 seconds instead of 50 to 60 secs or more with Safari 4.0.3. Also, they animated in the designed time with Safari 3. So, something is different about Safari 4.0.X, either intentionally or unintentionally.

  • Animated Gif Problem

    Greetings
    I would appreciate some help.
I am new at creating animated gif's, and am experiencing a
problem with them when I try to view them in a browser.
I am working in Fireworks 2004, the following is what I do.
    Create first frame.
    Insert simple arrow.
    Create second frame
Insert simple arrow with diffrent color
Third frame same but diffrent image.
Set the Optimize Panel to Animated Gif, transparency set to
    No tranparency.
    Click on File, Export.
Type the name of the file in File Name box.
Select "Frames to Files" option for Save as type option.
In my folder where I saved the files there are now three gif
    files.
When I open the file into the following browsers IE 7, 6.0 or
Firefox it remains as a static image in the browser with no
animation, the same is for viewing it in Window Explorer Preview
    Pane.
In Fireworks however the animation plays perfectly.
I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me what I
am doing wrong or why they created animated gifs are not playing in
    the browser.
    Regards
    Dave

Instead of Frames to files on export, select Images only.
    that should do it -

  • Adjustment layers not 'sticking' on animated GIFs

I'm trying to adjust brightness/contrast and saturation over about 30 layers on an animated GIF. Everything looks great until I do a save for web and click on the animate box. At that point, the color/changes drop off completely. It shows up fine when it's just the one layer being shown. And it seems to be showing up on all the layers when I'm in the main edit window. I keep looking and making sure I have the 'this adjustment affects all layers below,' and I do. I even tried saving a GIF with the other setting turned on and I got the same thing.
Anyway, I exported a few GIFs, thinking maybe the adjustment layers would kick in as it saved, but nope. Neither layer saved into the exported GIF.
I'm sure this is just a simple setting I'm missing, but I'm banging my head against the desk at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Thanks! I'm still trying my best to sort out why the adjustment layers drop off when I go to animate the GIF ... BUT I did duplicate the adjustment layers -- one for each frame -- and then clicked on the adjustment layers and selected layer and merged them one at a time and it worked. It's still more tedious than I hoped, but not as tedious as trying to adjust each layer on its own and having to input the same exact settings for each layer.
I would still be interested in anyone else's take/advice on applying adjustments to all the layers in an image at the same time and having it cary through to 'save for web.' Animated GIFs are so simple in theory, but I'm finding them to be absolutely one of  the most frustrating and tedious things to try and edit/create.

  • Suggestion to Apple: Animated GIF's in mail.

[Note: I would prefer to not hear one response from an apple user stating "animated gifs are ugly I'm glad it doesn't work." I too hate them, but read on...]
I recently helped a family of PC users switch to a Pentium iMac. I do their tech support and this has made my life SO much easier
The wife loves sending stupid little animated gifs back and forth to her friends... it's not for us to judge if they're ugly or annoying, they like them. Period.
I am so ashamed to have to go to her when I return her computer today and say "I'm sorry, this awesome and capable computer I have set you up with is unable to play back simple Animated GIF's.
I trust in Apple... playing back an animated gif should NOT be a major security threat. Make it work. Of course I could switch her back to Thunderbird but then that breaks her Address Book as well.
    --Dan Dawson
    [Owner of three Mac's myself]

If her friends are using Outlook Express, then it should work. Here is an excerpt from:
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-19275.html
    a) Apple Mail can embed animated Gifs in Mime Format Mails, but it doesn't show them animated itself! This means if you send such a Mail to a user with e. g. Outlook Express, he will see the Gif with it's animation, although Apple Mail didn't show it!
    b) Even more interesting is this: when a user with Outlook Express sends you an Mail with embeded animated Gif, Apple Mail also shows the animation! Why is this, you may ask? It's because Outlook Express sends the Mail as HTML with MIME Attachment and also does a URL "CID:" reference in the HTML code to the actual embeded animated Gif! Quite nifty!
    --- End Quote ---
You can read the site for more information.
The other option is to just use MS-Entourage.
Entourage can synchronize with Apple's Address Book. And, it's naturally going to have support built-in for Microsoft's methods.
As for making suggestions to Apple, you'll get better results by making the request to Apple directly.
They don't comb this discussion forum for ideas. And, tend to ignore what we say here.
So, go to their actual feedback page, and submit your request there:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
At least then you know someone at Apple will actually read it.
There's no guarantee that they'll implement your request. But, you'll have a better chance if you submit your requests there.
Like all requests, the more people that want it, the more likely it will be added. So, get all your friends to request the feature if you want it.
Obviously, if the request comes repeatedly from the same person, they'll probably grow tired of it, and quit reading your requests. But, if several distinctively different people ask for something, they are very likely to consider it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Firefox slows down when opening a site with animated gifs

After updating to FF4, I find that whenever I try to open a page that has multiple animated gifs on it, firefox slows down tremendously. CPU usage goes up to 50-75% and all animated gifs are moving really slow.
It's not only large animated gifs, but it also occurs on forums that have animated smilies. I never had this problem in FF 3.6 nor any other browser (IE, Chrome, Safari). If I start FF4.0 without any add-ons or plugins it does the same thing. Even with a fresh install. Does anyone have a solution to his problem? Since I can't use some of my favorite sites now with FF, without my pc slowing everything down.

Disabling the hardware acceleration worked for me!

  • High CPU Consumption when Displaying Animated GIFs

    Hi -
Within our application we utilize a lot of the standard AJAX loading icons to indiciate that data is downloading/loading. What we've noticed, however, is that when animated GIFs are being displayed they are consuming between 5 and 8 percent of the CPU. I've confirmed it's definitely the GIF that is causing the CPU usage to increase so dramatically.
Has anyone else experienced this? Do you have work arounds? Does anyone have any idea why performance is so bad on this?
Does using an SWF instead help?
    Thanks.

    Hello Steve.
Although I'm not really sure what you mean by "content plugins dialogue", you may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

  • Encryption in animated gifs?

I've created an animated gif in Fireworks and am uploading it
to a remote server for distribution, and the distribution software
at the server end is promting "Your image contains an unknown file
encryption. The file encryption type is not recognized."
After re-checking the specs of the distribution service yes,
animated gifs are permitted to be uploaded. I've searched the web
with no luck for methods to alter (or remove) file encryption from
an animated gif, within or outside of Fireworks. Anyone encountered
this before and can you help me out?

Image objects need to be antialiased to the color they will
    be placed
against. So, your text objects need to be created against a
    blue rather
than a white background, and then exported with the
    appropriate

  • Animated gif not moving, image.animation_mode already set to Normal

    ''dupe of - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/932846 - locking''
With image.animation_mode already set to Normal, animated gif are not moving, it seems only the first frame is downloaded. I tried downloading the image, it also seems that only the first frame is downloaded. Then I disabled all extensions, the problem persists. Then I use a whole new profile, there seems to be no problem.
The question is, is there another hidden settings in firefox which cause this trouble? I do not want to start a new profile just because of this. (It also happens in Firefox version 13)

Do you see the animation if you check the image in Tools > Page Info > Media or open the image directly in a tab?
Some security software (firewall) can block animated images and send a normal image instead, so can try to check the advanced settings for Firefox in the firewall if the problem isn't in Firefox.

  • Animated .gif header help!

I have been asked to create an animated header using a .gif because the client wants the animation viewable on iPhones.  How can I get a logo to "wipe" while using a transparent background?  I tried using a mask but you see the white box.  Is there anyway to create this effect using a transparent background?

Animated gifs are much easier to do in Fireworks. It's made for the format, more so than Photoshop is. PS only works with one frame at a time while Fireworks is desgined to work with the entire set.
